About the Author Patti Jo Walter and her husband, Dave Walter, started Francis Creek Fjords (FCF) in 1995. FCF was a Fjord hub for nearly two decades, having Fjords come from all over the United States to be trained, sold on consignment, or bred to their stallion, Fair Acres Ole. Patti Jo began giving riding lessons in 1998, teaching myriad disciplines: huntseat, dressage, jumping, and driving. Today, she continues to instruct dressage and jumping, sharing her passion with anyone wishing to learn and have fun with horses.  Patricia Holland, born and raised in Northeastern Pennsylvania, attended York Academy of Art to pursue a career in commercial art. Dovetailing her lifelong passions of art and horses, she became a professional horse trainer, illustrating what she saw, what she learned, and the people she met along the way. With humor and wit she juggles these contrasting careers, creating a rich and fulfilling life. She resides and illustrates in Galena, Illinois.

But, after reading this book along with the next book in the series, "Color Your Way Through Horseback Riding", I feel like I've got at least a working knowledge of horses and horseback riding. The pictures and presentation are presented in a humorous manner that keeps you smiling while actually learning about the subject. Well done

It's filled with basic horse, rider, and tack terminology AND some of the illustrations are hilarious. Being able to color the pages is a bonus. Kids and adults will enjoy these educational and fun coloring books.

About the Author

Jos Stam is a senior research scientist with Autodesk. He was born in the Netherlands and educated in Geneva, Switzerland, where he received dual bachelor degrees in computer science and pure mathematics. In 1989 he moved to Toronto, where he completed his master’s and PhD in computer science. His research spans several areas of computer graphics: natural phenomena, physics-based simulation, rendering, and surface modeling, especially subdivision surfaces. He has published papers in all of these areas in journals and at conferences. In 2005 he received the SIGGRAPH Computer Graphics Achievement Award, one of the most prestigious awards in computer graphics. He also won two Technical Achievement Awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science and has been featured in Wired magazine.

Computational fluid dynamics is not easy and there are very few, if any, math or physics books that cover the material with real implementation in mind - the few I've come across are terribly boring. This is a different kind of book and is a nice supplement to the author's well-known paper on implementing fluid solvers.The missing star is for the choice of publisher and quality of the illustrations..... CRC Press is hardly coding hacker mainstream and is very expensive. Some of the illustrations/images are of very poor quality, as are some of the code listings.Still, a very good guide to getting started with fluid animation.

Review These are really helpful reference books that you will regularly refer to. This series of books are excellent reference books for your shop library. The opening pages of the Jointer book show the anatomy of generic Jointers and continues on with the tool basics that many of us might have forgotten. This supposition is the 'raison d'etre' of the Skills Institute Press book series. The Jointer book however also includes another important woodshop tool, the thickness planer which is a bonus but one would think that this fact should be featured on the cover. Adjusting and aligning of the tool are featured as well as some neat tips on tapering, rabbets and chamfers. Chapter four deals with the Thickness Planer and illustrates its basic uses. Pages 58 and 59 give the woodworker tips on how to plane both short and very thin pieces. It is always of the utmost importance to keep the jointer and planer knives ultra sharpo and the final pages of this book show you how.I love woodworking. I'm not great at it - I figure it'll take me another 15+ years to hit that magic 10,000 hour mark in the shop to reach an expert's level of craftsmanship. But in the meantime, I try to always have something going on in the shop that either allows me to learn a new skill or get a bit more practice with an older one. Right now, I'm enjoying learning how to properly use my router table. I know how to use a router as a stand-alone device, but the table is going to allow me to branch out and really do some interesting stuff. But mounting the router underneath the table brought with it some questions that required me to dig out the router manual a big white heap of pages that answered my question but not with a lot of enjoyment. I've done this in the past, breaking out my stack of manuals to remind myself how to tune my table saw or replace the blade correctly in my band saw. The operator manuals that come with tools are definitely useful, but they have one glaringly obvious drawback - the manual will tell you how to properly and safely operate a tool, but it won't tell you how to really use it. You won't get the advice that a pro can offer when you're first getting your feet wet with a new tool (well, unless you have access to a few pros). This is exactly the situation I found myself in when I first purchased my circular saw, my table saw, my band saw, and my router. I tell you all this so you'll understand (and not poke too much fun at me) why I grabbed the box from the UPS guy and beat a path to my man cave to tear into the care package sent to me from Fox Chapel Publishing. They've got books on a lot of different subjects from Mennonite Cookbooks to Sewing to Winemaking to Woodburning. But it's their woodworking titles that make me drool, with subjects ranging from furniture making to pinewood derby cars. Tucked in the box were ten little books I've been itching to read and review, and I've just completed the entire set after just a little over a week. If that sounds like a lot of reading in a short time, rest assured that these ten little books are short, easy to read, and sure to be of interest to anyone who has stared at a power tool and wondered how to operate it, how to maintain it, and ultimately how best to use it. The series is called The Missing Shop Manual, and while I certainly hope the library continues to grow, you'll likely find at least one of the books that matches a tool in your shop maybe more. The series claims you'll wish this was the manual that originally came with your insert-tool-name-here. I can't speak for all ten books as I've not yet got a jointer, shaper, or lathe (my wife is grimacing right now as she realizes I don't yet have all the tools I really want), but I can tell you that the claim holds true for my band saw (2-page manual, I kid you not), my router (a bit better manual, but no actual usage examples), and my drill press (a little better with a 3-page manual but half of it was warnings and troubleshooting steps). I'll go ahead and say it - I wasn't really certain how much these little books (most of them averaging less than 150 pages) were going to really help me when I started reading. But after completing the Router and Table Saw books, I couldn't stop smiling. I had already picked up on some of the advice in these books, but there was new stuff in there (to me). Stuff I know I would likely never have figured out without someone with experience telling me. But since I typically work alone and am of the I'll-figure-it-out-on-my-own mentality, I tend to make mistakes often. That's how I learn, I guess. But let's take the Band Saw book, for example. I thought using a band saw was pretty straight forward. I knew how to operate it, how to tighten the blade, and how to do a few tricky cuts. But I never thought to check the blade wheel alignment. I guess the manufacturer just figured it would be perfect from the factory. (Wrong.) This little book even showed me how to test for (and fix) an out-of-round blade wheel. There was zero mention of this in the manufacturer's manual fortunately my blade wheels were round but the alignment was a bit off. I fixed it per the book's instructions and did a test cut on a piece of hardwood that had been giving me trouble. Immediate improvement that I could tell just by feel. I can go on with more examples. The Circular Saws and Jig Saws book (two tools in one book) gave me a much better understanding of two of the tools I use most in my shop. Again, I thought I knew all there was to using these tools, but the little manual proved otherwise by offering me some tips on how to make specific types of cuts with these (at times) not so accurate cutting tools, especially the jig saw. The Table Saw book I read twice. I honestly could not believe how little I knew about the maintenance and operation of one of the most expensive tools in my shop. I mean, seriously - how hard would it be for tool manufacturers to provide some DVDs and mini-projects to help us learn how to use our new tools better? Thankfully, it's never too late to learn and I can point to the Table Saw book as a prime example of where The Missing Shop Manual is a worthy investment. I started reading the Glue and Clamps book as I was waiting for my wife to get ready to go shopping - she gave me the funniest look when I put a bookmark in and took it with me. Yes, I actually enjoyed reading about gluing and clamping techniques while sitting and waiting for her to finish her shopping. I even had one guy pass by me, give me a strange look, and then ask me if the book was any good! I've never done any drawer assembly, but now I know what to buy (and why) should I ever try to put together a box. All of the books contain a mixture of color photographs and color line drawings to demonstrate techniques or concepts. They're also, as I said earlier, short and sweet. You can typically read an entire book in less than 45 minutes or, in the case of the Jointer book's 77 pages, about 20 minutes. The books range in price from $9.95 to $12.95, with the exception being the Bench Planes book that comes with a 55-minute DVD showing techniques and proper usage. After reading all ten books, I'm thinking I'd really like a lathe. The Lathe book was fun to read, even though I don't own one. I know what's involved (to a point), so it was interesting to read a detailed overview of how the tool works, how the various cutting tools are used, and some of the interesting things I can do with it. The Missing Shop Manual series is well done. Most of us who enjoy woodworking are not professional woodworkers, so it's nice to have little books like this available to help refresh our memory on operation, cleaning, tuning, and proper usage. I know I'm guilty of getting lazy here and there and operating a tool improperly, so I think I'm going to make myself a promise to review these books once a year to keep me on my toes and keep my tools in proper working order. Take a look at your own tools and find the one that gives you the most trouble or the one that you tend to take for granted that you know everything there is to know about it. Pick up a copy of the matching Missing Shop Manual and give it a read - I'll be curious to know what you think. Provocation(Phantom Air Combat #2) By Kindle Customer Chris Carver Most individuals today have no personal experience concerning Berlin as a divided city covering the 40 plus years after WWII ended, nor the extraordinary tension between the USSR and the western allies. The expression "Loose lips sink ships," took on a whole new meaning during the "Cold War era." The men and women of the military forces were constantly under surveillance by the eastern block of the USSR. Thanks for another great read and enlightenment about the lives of those affected by those times.

Another great novel by Dave Gledhill By Rudnei D. da Cunha This is another great novel by Dave Gledhill, an ex-Royal Air Force navigator who has served in Germany and the Falklands on Phantoms and Tornado fighter aircraft. His knowledge of air operations and daily routines make, as always, for a nice and credible reading, even if the events are fictional. But the Cold War could have turned hot indeed... Thoroughly recommended!

I can't believe that there is so much to be said about pivot tables! The audience ranges from what the book calls casual users to power users. By casual, I think they mean “comfortable with formulas.” I'm skeptical when I see such a wide range, but here it is correct. Except for the most advanced users, parts of this book are going to be too advanced for some readers. Including me. It's ok though as it is clear which parts these are.The book is really good about showing what features are new in different versions of Excel along with the limitations in different versions. There are lots of notes, tips and case studies. There are also many recipies/how tos. It's not fluffy, but parts are conversational. I liked the part about marketings presumed influence on PowerPivot.I learned a number of things I want to try. Some now and some when I upgrade to Excel 2016. Other features I don't have a use for, but are cool to know that they exist. The only thing I'd change is the ordering. Chapter 14 is useful even if not an advanced user. It follows some very deep chapters so a reader could stop by then.This book is part of the Content Update Program. You register your book online and get free updates until the next edition of the book comes out. It also means that you get access to the e-book with your copy of the printed book. Good way to learn pivot tables By Paul Turpin I have seen pivot tables used in other people's spreadsheet's and wanted to learn how to use this powerful Excel tool. This book appeared to be a good way to learn and so far has been.I like the way the author starts with the basics and moving into more advancing ideas. My favorite sections were using filters and doing calculations in the pivot tables.The section of using external data sources like SQL Server appears to be quite interesting.There is plenty of material for those really wanting learn about advanced functionality like Power BI, OLAP cubes, 3D maps and Power View dashboards.

The boy's imagination is vividly portrayed in pictures that show the tiger magically appearing in the steam and on his sister's face when she roars. By Amazon Customer A young boy is left under his sister's care for the day and he follows her around trying to get her to read him his favorite book about a tiger. But her answer is always, "later". She is focused on a book of her own and the music she has plugged into her ears. So he tries another tactic. He pulls the earplugs out of her ears and screams, "I'm hungry!". So she fixes him a bowl of soup and goes back to her book and music.Just as he starts to eat the soup lo and behold there is a tiger in his soup. Yep, a growling, stalking, furious tiger! This little boy decided to take on the tiger all by himself. When his sister sees him carrying on like a wild child, she picks up his book and read to him while he ate his soup. Did this take care of the tiger or will he still there somewhere?The author has written a fun, adventurous tale about a young boy's imagination and his attempt to tame a tiger. Imagination is a wonderful tool it makes reading so much more fun. She shows our children how to enjoy a book even if you can't read. The illustrations depicted the story so well that the young boy's imagination created his own take of the story. Then there comes the joy and excitement of reading or having the story read to you. Let me count the ways.First, my wriggly niece Sophia (6) and nephew James (4) wanted to read it again immediately. Sophia at first didn't want to read it aloud to James (echoing the sister in the book), but for her it was because she felt unsure of her ability. On the second round, she chose to read aloud. Adults or children may connect with the funny and accurate representation of a brother/older sister relationship (example: "Today, my big sister is in charge of the house, the lunch, and ME."-- the action-pacted tiger battle sequence -- or the pro-book-reading subtext. The illustrations in the book-within-the-book reference ancient Indian cultural traditions overlaid on a contemporary American setting. Sheth's text is spare, gorgeously written, emotionally spot-on, and often intelligently humorous. Love the ghoon -- ghoon-- sound the microwave makes. Adults will keep loving the story through the many re-reads that will be requested.Finally, is there anyone who doesn't want to see these great illustrations again and again? Jeffrey Ebbeler has produced an amazing series of acrylic paintings that dance and leap and settle down with a happy sigh. I totally love the expressions on the faces of the protagonist and his sister. Not to mention the tiger. No one who reads this book can forget either the tiger or the ingenious weapons the protagonist concocts out of kitchen implements in his battle with the it. Exaggerated and varied perspectives and just enough detail make even the children's house a masterpiece of imagination. Ebbeler has clearly gone down into the story very deeply to make this a tour de force. A perfect marriage of text and illustration.Julianna Shaull

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Imagine that By Storywraps This highly creative and imaginative book is filled with the most amazing illustrations. An unnamed boy and his unnamed sister are left alone in the house. The first sentence reads: "Today, my big sister is in charge of the house, the lunch, and me." The bold lettering of me immediately alerts the reader that something is up. Big sister is zoned out with her earbuds in her ears reading a book of her choice and little brother is hungry, impatient and wants to be read to. In a desperate attempt to get her attention he pulls one of the buds out of her ear and shouts, "I'm hungry." Doing her caregiver duty she opens a can of soup for her little brother, tells him to be careful as it is hot, and then ignores him again and goes back to her reading. This is when the fun really begins....and the boy's imagination kicks in and gets him into big trouble.The soup, by the way, is alphabet soup, and once it is heated creates a puff of steam that morphs into a giant, ferocious, Bengal tiger that rises out of his bowl. Once on the floor the humungous tiger looks even more menacing and it is up to the boy to defend himself at all cost. With spoon in hand the two face off and the boy finally declares war on the beast. This is an engaging story that has you cheering the boy on and wondering if his big sister will ever notice his life-threatening plight. Most importantly ( for all us book nerds out there) we wonder if his sister will ever read his book to him. This is a creative, humorous story with a nice surprise ending that I know you will enjoy. Kudos to our imagination and to excellent storytelling!

Instructive overview of SQL Server’s backup and restore options By Ian Stirk Hi,I have written a detailed chapter-by-chapter review of this book on www DOT i-programmer DOT info, the first and last parts of this review are given here. For my review of all chapters, search i-programmer DOT info for STIRK together with the book's title.This book aims to give you a strong understanding of SQL Server’s backup and restore functionality, how does it fare?This is a short book, consisting of around 150 pages, divided into 11 chapters. This book is aimed at the beginner or mid-level DBA, and assumes only some basic T-SQL skills.Backup and recovery are the most important topics for many DBAs, so it’s paramount to have an excellent understanding of them. Being involved in a recovery after a crash can be a stressful event, so it makes sense to learn and practise the subject under less troublesome circumstances (ideally using an up-to-date step-by-step document that anyone with an understanding of SQL Server could implement).Below is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the topics covered.Chapter 1 SQL Server Database FilesThis chapter opens with at look at the underlying files that make up a SQL Server database i.e. a primary data file (.MDF), zero or more secondary data files (.NDF), and a log file (.LDF). Data is stored in 8K pages, and 8 pages make up an extent.The chapter then discusses, in outline, the different types of backup:*Full – backup of the whole database*Differential – backup of the data changed since the last full backup*Copy – backup of the whole database, without interfering with the backup strategy*Transaction log – backup of transactions since the last transaction log backupEach chapter ends with useful summary, points to ponder, and review quiz sections. There are useful diagrams and links to other chapters in the book.I had problems with several aspects of this chapter, which is unfortunate because the rest of the book mostly doesn’t have these problems. Problems included:*Uses terms before they are defined, including unnecessary material, some awkward analogies, and some bad logic/arguments*p11 talks about moving a row from the leads table to the customer table, later p26 suggests a row in the leads table can convert from ‘new’ to ‘customer’ (in leads table) - this information is unnecessarily confusing, it would be better to omit it*Giving a File Backup as a type of SQL Server backup, this is confusing, and unnecessaryMaybe it would have been better to stick to the point, but don’t be put off, the remainder of the book is clearer....ConclusionThis book aims to give you a strong understanding of SQL Server’s backup and restore functionality. It is generally: easy to read, has useful step-by-step walkthroughs, helpful diagrams, and good links between chapters. The end of each chapter contains a helpful summary, points to ponder, and a review quiz. Much of the material is applicable to earlier versions of SQL Server too. The book is relatively cheap in price, so cost should not be a consideration in understanding this important topic.This small book contains good base material, but much more information could have been provided, especially if you want a strong understanding. The book reads much better if you already know the subject matter. Parts of Chapter 1 should be rewritten.Overall, this is an instructive overview of SQL Server’s backup and restore options, a very important topic.

I like Cyril the most because he can do cool things like pull off his facial skin and expose his skull and jump into fire.My favorite part of this book is when Cyril pulls off his face and scares humans away. Do you think October will solve the mystery of Cyril’s death? Read the book and you’ll find out!I recommend this book to kids who love Encyclopedia Brown books and Scooby-Doo.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. because I enjoyed this book immensely By mike I won a copy of Loyalist to a Fault by Evan Munday in a Goodreads Giveaway.I fear I may be in trouble here for a couple of reasons; first, author Evan Munday, in the first chapter of Loyalist to a Fault mildly (and good-naturedly) chastises readers who have not read the first two books in The Dead Kid Detective Agency series, and second, the Barnes and Noble website, where I also post reviews when able, lists Loyalist to a Fault as for 8-12 year-old readers, Amazon also lists it as a children's book.I, sadly, have not read the first two offerings in the series, and I do not fall in the audience target age range.If this truly destroys the credibility of my review, oh well, because I enjoyed this book immensely. The narrator often speaks directly to the reader making them an insider to the story. I think this is great and makes an already funny story even better. The adventures of our heroine, October Schwartz, are too much fun. Though maybe not to her.As the series title divulges, our human detective, who is in the ninth grade, is aided in her sleuthing by several non-living entities (ghosts). They of course have many (mis)adventures on the way to resolving their mysteries. Think Scooby-Doo meets Nancy Drew, meets Saved by the Bell, meets Rocky Horror (the narrator).There are many pop culture references which the target audience is probably too young to get, so author Munday provides a helpful guide explaining those references. Shows how old I am, I understood most of the references without the guide.I would advise whomever is in charge of such things, to reconsider labeling Loyalist to a Fault as for 8-12 year-olds. I think adults, at least those who still possess a sense of humor, will have fun reading this book. Seeing the book described as a children's book may discourage them from checking it out. This would be sad indeed, we all need a good, clean, fun read from time to time.Loyalist to a Fault is not serious (did I get that point across yet?), if you want serious, read War and Peace, if you want light-hearted fun, read Evan Munday's Loyalist to a Fault. Unless you are a full on grinch you'll like it. Enjoy!Mike

By loftgirl It is a true shame that Vogel's beautiful work and the stunning photography of it is printed on such poor paper stock. Additionally, the flimsy notecards are packaged with mismatched envelopes. They are not only awkwardly too large for the notecards, but also have a random yellow pattern on the front and back - making them feel like an afterthought.

This short novel presents a complex mixture of crime intrigueand romantic drama, interspersed with elements of historical fiction. Ourrelatively contemporary (1980s) hero is Thomas Allen, currently working for theDrug Enforcement Agency in New England, who enters a confusing new stage of hislife when he falls for his target, the fiery Donna Murphy, whilst workingundercover. Meanwhile, flashes of history take us back to the Second World War,where Nazi officer Wilhelm Strausvon attempts to make a break for the States asthe end of the war looms. These two very different stories come together in afascinating narrative as Thomas makes a difficult decision about his future.Rodney Searcy presents an interesting central character in Thomas Allen, who ismore sensitive and thoughtful than his contemporaries in the action/adventuregenre. Though there are plenty of high octane moments in the novel's plot,character development takes centre stage, presenting three central figures whomreaders can relate to. Donna is absorbing, charming and written with greatdepth, whilst Wilhelm's complexities had me turning page after page. The heatedpolitical backdrop of both the 1980s and 1940s suits the intriguing atmosphereof the story well, and description and dialogue were well balanced, deliveringa fully rounded quick read that left me very satisfied at its end.
