About the Author W. LEON SMITH is the author of several books. A native of Central Texas, he has edited and published many newspapers over a 30-year period and is an accomplished reporter, photographer, investigator, landscaper, and keyhole gardener. He is former owner/operator of a movie theatre, has been a state-licensed irrigator, and was elected to several terms as a mayor of a small city. Leon Smith's book is a must-have, along with Dr. Tolman's “Soiled Rotten: Keyhole Gardens All Year Round.” I feel like Mr. Smith's book is the peanut butter to Dr. Deb Tolman's chocolate, or visa versa. Both emphasize brains over brawn when it comes to garden design and maintenance in suburbia. As a “first adopter” to Dr. Tolman's KHG design model, Mr. Smith experienced its pros and cons and innovated according to his personal lifestyle. In his book, he reveals the thought process that led to his prefab KHG kits, which kind of look like the bottom half of a cupcake to me. The bonus features of his book abound. Aspiring green thumbs get tips and tricks on seed germination, watering, plant organization, and critter control – all from his first-hand experiences. In the end, Mr. Smith reminds us that kitchen gardening was once a normal part of family life, and it could return again with a little imagination through keyhole gardens. Speaking of imagination, I also appreciated Mr. Smith's short fictional story. It made me want to watch classic science fiction films.

Smith As a veteran keyhole gardener a lot of the concepts in this book are mainly a review but I still found nuggets of information that were worth consideration and the price of the book. I wish I had this book when I was just starting out. It is a no-nonsense approach to the concepts of this type of gardening.

The book provides a general overview of keyhole gardening, a way of growing plants through the use of a raised garden system. The author writes of his experience in building and growing keyhole gardens, and includes a number of photos of both the process and end result. The book is written in first person in a casual and easy style, making it easy to read and understand. You should also make sure to read the short story "The Triffidzoid" in the final pages of the book. It is a humorous fictional tale about sunflowers growing in a keyhole garden.
