In middle age Roy, Henry and Donnie have drifted into comfortable ways of being until a shared tragic event leads them to consider their existence and they each realise that their comfortable space is also a prison. They start opening up their lives to new experiences but fall foul of an Establishment governed by a pervasive anti-terrorism agenda that is powerfully misused. We should not give away the plot of the book and the events that challenge the social order of the nation, leading to The Pensioners March on Glasgow, but we can mention some of the characters in the book. As well as Roy the retired factory worker, Henry a defected member of the landed class now professional gambler, and Donnie who is ex-army and clouded in mystery, there is Maureen, the bar manager and Rosie, her assistant and soul mate. There is also the gangster ‘Finn’ and his bodyguard ‘Adonis’; the lawyer, Mr Findlay Macsween still sharp at eighty years of age; Amjad and Mohsin the computer whiz kids; Nadira Khan, Professor at Oxford University and a Master of the Bench of Middle Temple; Chief Superintendent ‘Dingaling’; the very smooth Chief Inspector Aldo Perretti, an expert in interrogating terrorists; ‘The Beast’, not someone with whom to spend time in a prison toilet cubicle; the mystical Aonghas of Assynt. Oh, and the First Minister of Scotland.

About the Author In his working life as a British university professor Dave Mearns authored seven books in the area of psychotherapy. With sales approaching half a million copies and translations into twelve languages, his work is popular because he was able to bring out the humanity of the therapeutic relationship and the ways in which people struggled to escape from the life experiences, such as emotional abuse and trauma, that had imprisoned them. He has taken that same feel for the people and their development into two novels, Smoky Bacon Crisps: Finding the Edge of Life and Shadow State. An unusual feature of these books is that they are Action/Adventure novels where the three central characters are so-called ‘senior citizens’. Perhaps it is about time that literary fiction provided action hero models for their ‘senior’ readers! These are heroes who do not drift quietly towards old age but decide to take a stand against the abuses of political authority. Dave lives in a cottage in Scotland with his wife, Elke. Much of their time is devoted to touring the Scottish highlands in their motorhome and taking advantage of the Scottish ‘right to roam’ legislation that encourages trekking in any of its wilderness areas. They also find many reasons to visit their daughters and granddaughters in Surrey and Holland as well as following the fascinating current development of Scottish politics.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A most enjoyable novel By Julian I have deeply enjoyed every page of this novel, and strongly recommend it to readers of all ages.I rarely give myself time for fiction reading during the week, given work and family commitments. Reading "Smoky bacon crisps" was an exception. Its main characters are described with so much love and sensitivity, that soon after starting reading it I felt very close to them, and found myself missing them every time I was away from the novel.By the end of it, I wanted to fly to Glasgow and have a pint with them at the Culloden (the pub where they regularly meet) myself!
