About the Author Walter F. Kern worked 35 years in telephone research after receiving a master's degree in electrical engineering. In 1989, he caught the motorcycle bug and became an avid motorcycle enthusiast. After he retired, he began an eight-year stint as the Motorcycles Guide at About.com. In 2007, he founded MotorcycleViews.com. He is the author of three motorcycle books.

He lays it out very nicely, and with step-by-step instructions that a new rider would need. And he stresses taking the MSF safety course, which is a must, especially with all the car drivers out there using cell phones and other devices. If I hadn't taken the MSF course, I would have been hit by a car or truck dozens of times. Not by leaving no exit, but by always working to keep an exit open... but you'll find a lot of little tips about riding in the book.If you have even the slightest desire to ride, Motorcycle Kick Starts will whet your appetite to ride. And the more info you're armed with, the safer you'll be in the end. He has great stories included, written by riders who have had various adventures riding under differing circumstances. You’ll enjoy picturing yourself in each situation and thinking how you would handle it. Then, once you’re riding for a few years, you just might go back and see if you would have handled it. And what Mr. Kern says is true – once the bug to ride hits you, it is VERY persistent! Having ridden 139,000 miles on my bike, I must say most every mile has been enjoyable with very few exceptions.The book is a quick, enjoyable read, and I see Mr. Kern has other Motorcycle books on Amazon, too. Enjoy!

It is unpretentious and direct and full of valuable information. There are more technical and detailed books about riding motorcycles by authors like Ken Condon, David Hough and Lee Parks, but they read more like textbooks and study guides. If those books are like well produced pop or classical music , Walt's book is like authentic folk music, down home and accessible to the casual listener or reader. I enjoy the stories and the emphasis on being a safe rider.

By Amazon Customer As a rider for 59 years, I had to learn a lot of things the hard way. Mr. Kern's book, Motorcycle Kick-Starts, without question would have made this much easier...and much safer. There is a wealth of good information for the beginning rider as well as more seasoned riders. I highly recommend this book.
