About the Author Percival Everett is Distinguished Professor of English at the University of Southern California and the author of nearly thirty books, including Percival Everett by Virgil Russell, Assumption, Erasure, I Am Not Sidney Poitier, and Glyph. He is the recipient of the Academy Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award, the Believer Book Award, and the 2006 PEN USA Center Award for Fiction. He has fly-fished the west for more than thirty years. He lives in Los Angeles.

They are quiet people living in big space; their hearts never stop questing into their inner world searching for a truer self. Quiet, authentic and warm souls presented by someone I would like to be friends with. Highly recommended.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A California academic's ideas of the West and the short story By Greg S These stories read like an outsider's vision of the modern west. Everett has clearly spent time traveling in Wyoming and elsewhere, but the stories lack the depth of feeling and description that come to someone who calls a place home. They also read like the short stories of an English professor – more concerned with the form than the substance. Several of the stories have the same basic structure: some simple, noble western character (usually male) embarks on a quest of some sort, is confronted by danger (rattlesnakes, cold, mountain lions), and then the danger magically passes and the stories ends flatly. I admire the experimentation with the favored form of creative writing MFAs, but they don't do a lot for regular readers. The questions raised do not pique my curiosity, and there was nothing significant besides questions in most of the pieces. I still read the whole book, partly out of quasi-enjoyment, partly to honor the person who gave me the gift, and partly in the hope that such an acclaimed author must redeem himself at some point. I can't say I regret reading the collection, but I was disappointed that I didn't find what I was looking for.

Good, not Great By Read-A-Lot Full disclosure; I am truly a fan of Percival Everett's writing, so I tend to be a bit biased when it comes to his work. Although I enjoyed this collection of stories, I can't say there was anything special about this book. His prose was ordinary and the stories, while showcasing a holistic approach to life didn't generate enough vibrancy to make the assemblage sizzle. I found each one pleasurable enough, but not adequately memorable. The stories leave you with things to ponder, but some definitely have that unfinished feel. I still would recommend this book to those who like short stories and good writing.
