About the Author Esther Goldenberg lives in Maryland with her two daughters and their spunky dog. She was an elementary school teacher for many years. Her superpowers include helping reluctant readers learn to love reading, helping math-phobic students conquer numbers, and making mazes . Esther loves to spend time near the water, playing at the ocean or hiking along the river. Her favorite dinosaurs are parasaurolophus and micropachycephalosaurus.

You will find yourself wanting to know more about the interesting characters introduced, and excited to see where Hope’s journey takes her next. Goldenberg does an amazing job of creating a plot that will attract Percy Jackson and other fiction novel fans, but also manages to be so different from the work of Rick Riordan. Two thumbs up!

An engaging adventure and beautiful story of strength and wisdom By Anneliesa Alprin Although I am not a member of the targeted demographic for this genre (in fact, I'm approximately 13 times pi older than the average reader), I thoroughly enjoyed the wisdom, wit, and adventure found in “Hypatia Academy.” I found myself saying ‘go girl’ to heroine Hope -- identifying with her struggles and learning from her approach to life’s challenges. At times, don’t we feel alone, scared, and angry in confronting the tests before us? Ms. Goldenberg does what all authors I love do, she folds in knowledge and esoteric tidbits to make a rich and engaging narrative. All the middle-school girls I know will be getting this book as a gift from their Auntie Ani this year. Thank you, Ms. Goldenberg, for sharing a beautiful story of strength and wisdom that reminds readers of our connection to each other, and of the power always available and waiting for us... we just need to trust ourselves.

I applaud Goldenberg for creating a very real and believable female protagonist who experiences very real and believable emotions to lead her to self-knowledge, courage, and compassion. In addition, she is very much a girl without being a stereotypical one. She loves math and karate as well as friends, family, and pets. I also applaud Goldenberg for bringing a female mathematician from the ancient world (Hypatia of Alexandria) to the attention of young readers. First Goldenberg hooks the reader with a mystery and mysterious goings-on, and then, as the characters (and the reader) slowly begin to make sense of what they're experiencing, she brings the story to an edge-of-your-seat climax. Throughout, we meet a variety of individual and well-drawn characters, both real and imaginary. There is nothing formulaic about this book.
