Or maybe you want a more predictable outcome not subject to the vagaries of wool rovings? Sally Dixon offers up Pipsqeaks to satisfy your need to work with felt (in the form of sheeting) and thread.Among the 30 projects are juicy strawberry earrings, darling doggie pins, and oh those sweet little elephants shown on the cover. They are the reason I bought this book.I wish I could say every project is as adorably detailed as these elephants, but there's only one other figure that approaches the same cuteness caliber. That would be the mice, especially if you endow them with felt ice cream cones and Bolero jackets. The other projects are more flat and elemental, items that would appeal to a much younger crafter. The Happy Birthday Cakes would be great fun for practicing one's first stitches while learning how to embellish and add depth to felt figures.Instructions are fairly brief, yet adequate. The author was very intelligent (and kind) to include a photo for each project showing all the cut felt pieces so you can make sure you're not missing something. Helpful suggestions abound, most notably in the section on types of felt. Honest wool felt is a pleasure to work with, while felt that contains man made fibers can be intolerably icky to handle. As with most crafts, always buy the very best materials your budget allows.Your micro-elephant will thank you, and look much better for it

They are adorable, great for gifts, or, in my case: making mini elephants and koalas in gum leaf pockets to fill all the nooks and crannies of my china cabinet.Great for the novice right up to the expert sewer. Buy one! Or two (for a friend). :-)

The cover is misleadingas the elephants are the only detailed project in the book. Most of the other projects are very one dimensional and seem like a youg child designed them.

By zeldamaster8472 This is an English translation of Shin’s 1995 semi-autobiographical novel “A Lone Room.” The dust jacket advertises it as a “new novel,” and although this is true if you mean “new in English,” the original novel came out well before either of her other two novels which have been translated and published in English (as a quick Internet search will confirm).I own and have read the English translations of “Please Look after Mom” and “I’ll Be Right There,” and although I enjoyed both, this is by far my favorite of the three.The story is told in a somewhat unusual format. The narrator frequently switches back and forth between the “present” (the mid ‘90s, when this was written and published) and the past (the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, when she was growing up). Personally, I found the story easy to follow, as the present is constantly connected to the past from scene to scene. Fans of the comic-book TV drama “Arrow” should be used to this.So why did I like this novel? First, it was easy for me to identify with the main character’s sense of isolation, as I have spent enough time doing factory work to appreciate how demoralizing it can be. If you haven’t worked in a factory, think of the worst job you’ve ever had, and imagine you were working at that job while living in a cramped room with an older brother and a cousin in the middle of a huge and mostly impersonal city . . . after living in a small village for most of your life. Throw in background events like a presidential assassination and a large-scale soldier-on-civilian massacre (both based on real-life events), and you have some idea of the turmoil the protagonist (and the author!) is in for.For any reader even slightly interested in Korean culture, this novel does an excellent job of helping you appreciate the personal and national tragedies that helped transform South Korea into the prosperous state it now is. It’s not easy to go from being perceived as a war-torn backwater to one of the world’s leaders in technology and pop culture, and Shin knows that as well as almost anyone.Shin is a deep writer, and from a literary standpoint, I enjoy her creative use of metaphor and allusion. References to Western literature and classical music mingle with the native cultural traditions of Korea in a powerful, sometimes emotionally exhausting account of one woman’s journey to find some measure of purpose and peace amidst the brutality of modern city life.“The Girl Who Wrote Loneliness” is a keeper and will go on my shelf with Shin’s other novels (and my other books on North and South Korea).Read it. Study it. Think about it. Then read it again.P.S. For whatever reason, the copy of the book I obtained has a different woman on the cover than the one pictured in Amazon's stock photo. My best guess is that the publisher decided to change the cover at the last minute, and some sites are using the old photo. I doubt the publisher would put out two different covers for the same edition, so you will probably get the cover I have uploaded here.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. the love in this family was obvious By Angela The feeling of a burden carried is pervasive in this novel, as the narrator moves us from the present when she is 32 and a novelist, to her past as a 16 year old girl working in an electronics factory in Seoul and back and forth in time again . The transitions to and from the different times are not necessarily seamless yet once I was in each of the times , I was fully immersed .It's the late 1970's in S. Korea and an unnamed narrator, lives with two of her brothers and a cousin in less than optimal living conditions to say the least - 4 people in a tiny room , as they work and study away from their home in the country . I definitely felt a sense of family as they cared for each other. In the sections on life in the country before their lives in the city , the love in this family was obvious.I immediately felt how the mechanics of working in the factory are juxtaposed against the creativity in her writing but yet our narrator seems to agonize over the writing process and the burden she carries doesn't seem to dissipate in her adult life . This was as much about her writing process as it was about her past . The passages that moved me the most were related to her writing:"Writing was home to me? Wherever I might be at that instant, these sentences , surging up through my body, pushed me to hurry back home.""Writing . Could it be that the reason I am so attached to writing is because only this will allow me to escape the feeling of alienation, that I, my existence , is nothing?""Is this how it goes with writing? That as long as you are writing, no time is ever completely in the past? Is this the fate that befalls all writers--- to flow backward, in present tense, into a time if pain......"Low wages , grueling factory work and union issues that they really didn't understand caught these characters between union organizers and factory management. At times it felt somewhat repetitive - telling of incidents between workers and the union and management but this no doubt depicted the reality for so many during this time and for certain for the author.This is an autobiographical work I found as I perused interviews and articles about this author going back several years . "LIKE so many South Korean parents at the time, Shin Kyung-sook’s mother saw education as her daughter’s best chance of escaping poverty and backbreaking work in the rice fields. So in 1978 she took her 15-year-old daughter to Seoul, where Ms. Shin would lie about her age to get a factory job while attending high school at night to pursue her dream of becoming a novelist." NYT article June 7, 2012. This could be the description of this book .It was an enlightening book for me in some ways learning about this time in this place and it's an intimate portrait in many ways . Yet , there's an imposed distance between the reader and the characters since the narrator and her family members remain unnamed- Oldest Brother , Third Brother, Little Brother , Cousin etc. It is complex and heavy but I felt relief in the end . I moved back and forth between 3 and 4 stars but in the end decided on 4 because I did feel privy to this author's heart and soul in spite of the distance I felt with the characters .Thanks to Pegasus/ W.W. Norton and Edelweiss.

I tend to 'miss a step' when trying to configure Samba; but I was able to follow this and get it working. Considering RHEL based systems are well represented in this book, I would have liked to have seen firewalld covered (only iptables is discussed). That being said I expect I will find the need to read a chapter from this book rather frequently.

As a designer, the author occasionally uses demonstrations which are Mac oriented, but I have been through the processes using Windows 10, my personal operating environment and they work fine. I can highly recommend this easy to read practical book, whether you are experienced, because there is always something new to learn as I pleasantly found out, or you are a complete novice.

By Deb Digger and Daisy are all excited because they’re going to be in a play. Well, Daisy is excited because she’s going to be a princess, but Digger is going to be a tree. Daisy swirls and prances around while Digger stares gloomily at a drawing of a tree. Not fun for Digger, not fun at all. Digger would really like to have a speaking part, perhaps the part of the prince. “The prince says many words, / You will forget what to say,” says Daisy. / Trees do not talk.” Princesses do talk and Daisy pored over the script trying to memorize her two whole words. Playing the part of a princess was going to be lots of fun! Trees were boring, but princesses were not.Digger wasn’t going to be saying any words, but he certainly could memorize them! He began to recite them as he went back and forth in his swing under the tree. Daisy reminded him that trees didn’t talk and that he wasn’t going to be the prince. Digger knew he wasn’t going to have a speaking part, but reminded Daisy not to forget her works. “I only say two words,” says Daisy. / I will not forget them.” One, two, those words she would remember! Digger can sometimes be a bit of a pest in this series, but a loveable one. As always, there’s a touch of humor in each book in the series and this one is no exception. It was like 1100 feet of finished space and we lived like 5 people in it. To be fair, we have an unfinished basement and had other people telling us crazy of raising kids in this small home. Our house has been adequate to our needs and that all comfort was given us after we read this book.

Lot of info By Jerald Chambers Not only does it have great inspirational photos, but this reference guide has great knowledge in buying or making own tiny house. The book gets you to analyze your day-to-day tasks and managing them in tremendous manner. After reading this book, I started minimizing my possessions and knew that there is so much space left in my room.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Limited by YA tag. Still brutal. By Amazon Customer “Unrestricted Rising” (UR) is the second book in the Restricted Saga. It is a direct sequel to “Restricted Renegade” (RR). I am honored and privileged to have been given an ARC to review.The events of UR seem to take place directly after the ending of the first book. Once again we are given a 3:1 ratio of Rachel-to-David narration, as the book makes clear jumps between both characters, and directly lets you know who is speaking. The previous book did this too, but some people were either blind when the novel made this indication, or just a-holes who preferred to ignore it. Whatever the case may be, you won’t have a problem with narration in this book.The author, Torres, is much more succinct in this novel. A lot of the stuff that seemed to make RR drag in spots has been cut. The story and book as a whole is light years better than RR, and I enjoyed portions of that novel very much. There really isn’t a whole lot of downtime in UR, and yet it still seems balanced with how we get to learn more about Rachel and David, and some of the secret, undercurrent hands which are pulling various strings.Perhaps it’s the ratio in which we are given snippets into each character, but I actually prefer David as a protagonist to Rachel. This has nothing to do with me being a guy and not identifying with a woman. He’s just a much more efficiently written character, and I would like to see more of him. Then again, maybe this is due to the fact that he is given less screen time. A “less is more” approach.While I think the story telling and plot in UR took two big steps forward, I think the characters took a step back. They just didn’t seem to progress the way I wanted when compared to where they finished RR. This is a problem since no one will confuse the Restricted saga with being action/plot driven as opposed to action/character driven.A large portion of this problem can be credited to Rachel. I felt there wasn’t enough that set her apart from the previous novel in terms of developing as a person. Also, a lot of what she did seemed to still revolve around David and their still budding relationship. I think this can be credited to the fact not enough space, time wise, was given between UR and RR. I think setting UR a few months, or a year, into the future would have forced the characters to grow. They just seemed forced and illogical. A boyfriend/husband who has years more experience and knowledge isn’t going to just be ok, and live with his girlfriend/wife who is worlds behind in training to do the things she does. It’s one thing if the guy is in trouble, or not around, and the girl has to spring into action because she is forced to do it. It’s another when he just folds his arms, crosses his feet at the ankles, and leans against a truck as she walks into enemy territory.On the other hand, this could just be a problem with the genre of the novel itself. Young Adult lends itself to simpler, more immature character development. However, I feel this is a problem as sometimes UR teetered back and forth between being YA, and being something else entirely. It’s that something else entirely that I liked more about this book. It seemed the stakes were higher, and the tone was just more adult. It was more “Angels and Demons” at times, and less “Divergent.”However you want to slice it, the relationship between David and Rachel (which was a strength in RR) is a hindrance in this novel. I felt the characters would have had more room to grow apart from each other. Instead, Rachel is caught up in a teenage drama while David is busy trying to pull s*** together. It’s an obvious tension and drama grabber for a YA audience, (and champions of that genre will LOVE this book) but a total “roll your eyes” moment for me. Chalk this up to genre preference, maybe?I don’t know. If Rachel is going to act like a 17 year old girl (she is) when it comes to relationships, then why is she given so much authority over everyone else despite the fact she is still a newbie to this war? She may have played a crucial part in bringing the previous villain down, but Luke Skywalker blew up the Deathstar in Episode 4 and he wasn’t automatically general supreme in Episode 5. Again...genre preference. But, like I said, this wouldn’t be a problem if elements of UR didn’t make it seem more grown up than a YA novel would allow for.The action, which was great in RR, is superb in UR. A lot more clear. It’s fast paced, and brutal at times (a YA problem, but I liked it). When Rachel was forced into making choices towards the end of the novel, I liked her better than when she had free reign. David was great, as I said. The character Melody will be someone who makes a lot of readers raise their eyebrows.I liked UR and am looking forward to Restricted Saga #3. I’m hoping for a more mature, and gut wrenching installment. With the way this one ended, I’m thinking I’ll get my wish.

By Majasbooks Review David Torres "unrestricted rising"Unrestricted rising starts off where restricted renegade left off.We still follow Rachel and David and their head on battles to free the mainland.Everything is intensified to the max in this second instalment !Rachel and David's lives take a huge turn in this book, and we follow their fights, sorrow and love.We really get to see who Rachel is when she sets on to rescue her mother from these disgusting rats! She gets her revenge against Johnson ahh what a great moment! Rachel is really maturing during this book, and you get to know her much better.David is being poisoned by the biggest ***** argh I really hate her! Knew there was something fishy about her! So much of the book David is in third person, he is in there but the poison controls him most of the time.It's very detailed and so much is happening, and you see the whole world changeing. Picking up where it left off after Restricted Renegade, we continue to follow Rachel and David as they battle the evils of their society. This second book of Torres’ Restricted Saga is even more enjoyable than its predecessor. The writing is clean and the pace spot on. It still encompasses everything I loved from the first book—detailed and interesting world building, Rachel’s strength, and the allure of David’s small yet crucial POV—but plot and overall feel of Unrestricted Rising becomes more mature. And the end! I’m on the edge of my seat, waiting for the next installment.
