Review Big and bold are apt descriptors for the quilts in this collection, which showcase large geometric shapes in bold, contrasting colors. The large size of the shapes makes for quick cutting and piecing, and there are plenty of tips for precise piecing throughout the book. Ten patterns are included, with fabric requirements for both lap and twin-size quilts, but the nature of the design makes it simple for quilters to calculate fabric requirements and layouts for larger-size versions. In addition to the color palette in the samples, each pattern includes suggested color palettes, which makes the process of choosing the right fabrics much easier. A cutting diagram for a number of sizes of each quilt facilitates efficient cutting. Cain's quilts feature pieced backs, making them reversible. The backs include the shapes from the quilt top, as well as plenty of negative space or a coordinating modern print. The articulate directions feature plenty of illustrations, especially for trickier piecing and are complemented by a full diagram for assembling each quilt top. VERDICT Cain's approach to modern quilting will appeal to quilters who are drawn to bold colors and minimalist styles, but who prefer a style that is less improvisational and more precise. By Susan D It's books like this that bring quilting up to date.It takes quilting up to a whole new level.The book allows you to learn techniquesto be able to make bold graphic quiltsthat make better use of your time.The quilts within the book are quick to cutand quick to sew together.There are full instructions in the back of the bookso that even a beginner quilter like me can make them.The thing I like the most about this book isthe palette suggestions at the beginningof each design.Each one has a name and individual colour mix.I sometimes get nervous picking coloursand this is ideal for me.It means I can make the quilt to match my decor.Each pattern is split into sections.You have all the details you need to cut the fabric.Then it's onto preparation.then constructions of the quilt.There are clear and easy to follow illustrationsto make the piecing easier for each of the designs.Then it's onto the quilt back and the finishing.There are quilts that are perfect for adultsand children alike.Within the instructions at the back of the bookare the pictures of the designsfor the free motion quilting and the straight-line quilting.This book really does hold everything youneed to make some amazing designs of quilts.The designs are magnificent.I received this book to review.However all opinions expressed are my own.No monies were exchanged.
