Review Abreu (Little Girls, Big Style) was inspired by her daughter to create the designs in this collection―she was too old for ruffles and frills and wanted something more sophisticated and mature, yet age-appropriate for school-age girls. The focus here is on sizes seven to 12―an age in which girls want clothes that don't look babyish but are still appropriate for play. Designs include tops, dresses, pants, shorts, and skirts, and the style is charmingly retro―think pedal pushers and Peter Pan collars but in contemporary fabrics. Abreu does a good job of walking sewists through each step of the process, from fabric choice to cutting layout to garment construction, and a dictionary of techniques guides beginners through everything from sewing a curved seam to gathering to sewing a waistband. About the Author After an award-winning print journalism career spanning nearly two decades, Mary Abreu left the newsroom to pursue her passion for sewing. She is an accomplished sewing instructor who teaches a wide range of classes near her metro Atlanta home. Mary also works as a seamstress with a boutique movie studio and has wardrobe department credits on two short films. Mary enjoys attending pop culture conventions, where she is a regular presenter on the topics of pattern drafting and hacking, costuming for children and historically-influenced costuming. She lives with her family near Atlanta, GA.

By Bad*ss Quilter As a quilting and sewing store owner I am very picky about which books I carry in my shop. They must be well written, beautiful and be on point for today's styles and in the case of this book be things kids actually want to wear and that mother's and grandmothers and even a few dads want to sew for them!Mary is an industry insider with her finger on the beat of what kids and parents want and has created a book that I would have used to sew for my own daughter when she was in the pre-tween / tween stage where clothing in the stores goes from cute to slutty in just one growth season.The patterns are practical, classic and open to a lot of embellishment if that is your thing. If you are looking to dress your young lady like a streetwalker or pageant queen this is not the book for you, but if you want he to have clothing to fit her changing body that also covers her stylishly without looking like a trip through Amish country I think this is the perfect choice. Classic, cute, comfortable.

Moore Modern Style for Girls is a fantastic book for anyone who wants knowledge and instruction to create a wardrobe for a tween that has comfort, style and timeless feel. Mary writes with authority but it is easy enough for a novice seamstress to follow and excel at sewing along. Her technical knowledge is apparent and her directions give guidance and freedom for you to make the patterns yours. The pictures are clear and inspiring. Mary's words, instructions and patterns have a way of demystifying the ancient art of constructing clothing for a new and modern girls generation!
