I really enjoyed reading this even though it may have been a little short it does make it up in sheer quirkiness and charm. It was interesting that I kept forgetting this book is about Minecraft. Every now and then something specific to Minecraft would show up and I would have to remember that the images in my head need to be more pixel-like! Every chapter gives you an excitement and it keeps on building towards the end.

This is the first book I've read in this series and I had no trouble.Risa Holden is driving from Anchorage to Diamond Creek to visit her brother Trey and his family when she veers off the road to avoid a moose in the road. Help comes along in the form of Darren Thomas, the local sheriff. There is an immediate strong attraction between the two although each tries to deny it internally because of personal issues. Risa works at a gallery in Anchorage, a job she loves, but she jumps at the chance to manage a new gallery in Diamond Creek. Things heat up between Risa and Darrin but both are unwilling to admit how they feel.Risa and Darrin are a likeable pair. Their issues are understandable given their personalities. Alaska itself is a big part of the story. I have never been there but it sounded beautiful in the descriptions. I love the small town feel of Diamond Creek. It is always a delight to find a series where you meet up with characters again from previous books and can see how they are faring.I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a contemporary romance featuring nice people.I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I am an admirer of this author. JH Croix writes inspiring books and they are so descriptive that I can almost imagine the characters and locations. The locations sound so beautiful and yet wild. The main characters in this book are Risa who has self esteem and relationship issues especially as she just recently learned her ex-boyfriend was cheating on her with her ex-best friend. She works in an art gallery about an hour away from her family. Then we have Darren who is the local police chief and seems to keep coming to her rescue following one major accident and a couple of fender benders, none of which were her fault. The moment they meet they feel the pull to one other. Darren also has commitment issues especially since his ex-girlfriend was less than supportive after a major incident. They start dating but have several obstacles to overcome including themselves. I look forward to reading more of the books in the Diamond Creek Series and other future books. I received a free copy of this book from the author solely in exchange for an honest opinion.

However, the sparks that fly between them could start a fire! A fling is what Risa decides will be best. Darren doesn't want just a casual hookup, but also doesn't want Risa to know he is broken. After helping her after her car accident, things continue to heat up between them. I love Ethan and Jack. They are so sweet and helpful. Trey and Emma slowly discover what is going on. Hayley wants to help out because she sees her brother happy for the first time in ages. Travis really wants to hassle his friend. I love how everything that happens up there becomes a Diamond Creek front-page headline type of thing. Only in a small town. This one made me smile from start to finish. I liked that the police chief also volunteers to fight the forest fires in the area...nice touch to make him an even bigger local hero and good guy. I loved how he had helped Emma with her ex before and you find out he really IS that awesome (and not just according to his sister!).ARC provided in exchange for honest review.

His collaboration with the publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel led to the creation of the Voyages Extraordinaires, a widely popular series of scrupulously researched adventure novels including Journey to the Center of the Earth, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, and Around the World in Eighty Days. Verne is generally considered a major literary author in France and most of Europe, where he has had a wide influence on the literary avant-garde and on surrealism. The pioneering submarine designer Simon Lake credited his inspiration to Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, and his autobiography begins ”Jules Verne was in a sense the director-general of my life.” William Beebe, Sir Ernest Shackleton, and Robert Ballard found similar early inspiration in the novel, and Jacques Cousteau called it his ”shipboard bible”. The aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont named Verne as his favorite author and the inspiration for his own elaborate flying machines. Igor Sikorsky often quoted Verne and cited his Robur the Conqueror as the inspiration for his invention of the first successful helicopter. The rocketry innovators Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, Robert Goddard, and Hermann Oberth are all known to have taken their inspiration from Verne’s From the Earth to the Moon. Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and William Anders, the astronauts on the Apollo 8 mission, were similarly inspired, with Borman commenting ”In a very real sense, Jules Verne is one of the pioneers of the space age”. When cosmonaut Georgi Grechko was orbiting Earth with Yuri Romanenko on the Salyut 6 in 1978, he broadcast back a message to celebrate Verne’s 150th birthday, saying: ”There’s hardly a person who hasn’t read his books, at any rate not among the cosmonauts, because Jules Verne was a dreamer, a visionary who saw flights in space. I’d say this flight too was predicted by Jules Verne.”

This is really the second half of "The Mysterious Island" By banjoist I had thought this might be a sequel to "Mysterious Island," but it's just the second part of that novel. I suggest you download the free copy of "Mysterious Island" and get both parts together.That said, this has always been a favorite of mine.

This is only the last 1/3 of "The Mysterious Island" By Librarian Jules Verne originally wrote his wonderful novel "The Mysterious Island" in 3 parts, each published separately to appease eager fans while the full book was still a work-in-progress. Part-1 is "Dropped From the Clouds," Part-2 is "Abandoned," and Part-3 is this, "The Secret of the Island." Once the novel was completed, there was (and still is) no longer any need for the separate components of it. Therefore, I heartily recommend you read the entire novel (containing all 3 parts) which (like this) is also a public domain freebie. In fact, there are TWO such free versions of "The Mysterious Island" in the Kindle Store, the British translation by W.H.G. Kingston (search by: Free books Verne Mysterious Island) and an American translation by Stephen W. White (search by: Free books Verne Ile Mysterieuse. English). It might even be fun to read and compare both of them -- but either one will give you the completed story in all 3 parts. Sadly, the actual secret referred to in the title of this portion is often revealed in blurbs and reviews for this work, thus spoiling the mystery, but the full book still remains great fun to read.Since this is only 1/3 of the complete 5-star classic, I have rated it only 1/3 as much (1.66 stars which rounds off to 2).FYI: Newer, corrected, slightly fuller, unexpurgated translations of "The Mysterious Island" are available, one by Jordan Stump from Modern Library/Random (and currently only $2.99) and another by Sidney Kravitz from Wesleyan (costing considerably more). Both are excellent, but skip the spoiler-filled introductions until after you have read and enjoyed the book.

By Chris Dolan I purchased this book to replace the AutoCAD 2010: No Experience Required version I had once I upgraded to AutoCAD 2016. I had purchased the original book many years ago with the intention of teaching myself AutoCAD. So now that I have gotten around to doing that I started using the previous version until this book arrived. I switched books about half way through (right after Chapter 7). While the tutorial has hardly changed between the 2 versions (same cabin drawing), the step by step instructions were clearly written by 2 different authors. The author of the 2010 version, Jon McFarland, clearly spent significant more time reviewing his instructions and making sure that even the small steps were covered. Donnie Gladfelter, the author of the 2016 version, seems to have blown through the steps without consideration for the fact that this book was written for those without prior AutoCAD experience. Perhaps this is an editing issue but for a book written for a such a meticulous and precise subject, the mistakes and holes in the writing of this book are glaring. I will be switching back to the 2010 version and figure out the changes between 2010 and 2016 after I figure AutoCAD out.

About the Author

It's very adequate for getting started with Unity game development. I wish someone had proof-read it before it was published, however, since the amount of typos and grammatical errors slowed my reading of the text. If you are not bothered by that sort of thing, add another star to this review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Bikinis, Surfboards, Bombs, and Doublecrosses By Dave Wilde The tenth Matt Helm novel, the Betrayers, is one of the best. It is taught, well-put-together, and simply a straightforward spy novel. Here, Helm goes to Hawaii, originally for some R & R, but then to outwit a possibly-rogue agent and his group of anti-war activist newbies. This novel features the sun and surf of Oahu and Maui, including Helm getting surf lessons from a blonde bikini-clad agent and enough action and bodies strewn in his wake to make this action-packed thriller.There are plenty of twists and turns and double agents and double crosses to make this one a terrific read. One of the things that makes this Helm novel so terrific is that Hamilton doesn’t try to make the story too big or have it go in too many directions. It is a straight-ahead espionage novel with one agent pitted against another agent and the guessing game of who is on whose side and who has crossed over. It is hard to avoid being cynical and distrustful when everyone is whispering secrets to everyone else and it seems as if they all think you are suddenly the most interesting man in the world. If you haven’t read any of the Helm novels before, this is a great place to start, but overall it is simply a terrific series, featuring hard-edged action and a battle of wits rather than crazy science-fiction gadgetry like some other series features.

MacLachlan My original, quick review was, "I think it as well written as any other in the series, but I never liked it quite as much as the others." I must have been in a bad mood that day. I quite enjoyed it this time around.Even in a small, tightly run organization like the unnamed one that Helm works for, there are people that go bad. A perfect storm of circumstance has a grieving Helm his vacation in Hawaii where his organization is mostly run by another agent that he doesn't get along with & who is suspected of selling out. Mac, Helm's boss, is quite efficient & uses Helm as a backup, but he winds up in the thick of a confusing mess that he has to fight his way through. Very well done.A new character is introduced in this book that will show up in a couple more, Mr. Soo. No longer is Helm dealing with just Russians, but now the Chinese.One of the most interesting facets of this book is Helm's age. This is, I believe, the last one in which he is referred to as a WWII veteran. The year is the mid to late 1960's, which would make Helm about 45 or a bit older. He's getting up there for a man of action. To keep the series going, he now becomes ageless. After this, we no longer think of him as young, but he pretty much stays this age for another 10 books, if I recall correctly.

Buzalka The Betrayers (1966) clearly follows its predecessor in Donald Hamilton’s Matt Helm series, The Devastators, with Helm despondent over the death of pretend-wife Claire in the previous book. He decides to chill out in Hawaii but gets tangled up in yet another case while there involving two intriguing women and a face out of the past.This book is a welcome return to form for the series with its gritty, suspenseful plot. Gone are the feints toward spy novel parody that threatened to break out in The Devastators, which came uncomfortably close to a Dr. Evil type supervillain-plotting-world-domination-from-his-secret-lair plot line despite the tragedies. There was already more than enough parody to go around in Dean Martin’s ridiculous portrayal of Helm in a series of movie adaptations, the second of which (Murderers Row) came out around the same time as The Betrayers.The best thing about Hamilton’s Helm series is the professionalism of the main character, which requires some rather cold-blooded calculations at times. The Betrayers also has some interesting allusions to the growing political turmoil over Vietnam in this country as well as twists and turns aplenty regarding loyalties and who to trust or not trust.I think The Betrayers is one of the highlights of the Helm series though I would urge anyone interested in the series to read it chronologically as Hamilton frequently alludes to happenings in previous books.

I know nothing about bridge other than it's hard and wondered if I'd be interested in a novel with a title about a pastime I have no interest in. Thank goodness I listened to my friend because it has little to do with bridge.If you've ever wondered what it's like to really have true friends who are there for you thru thick and thin, who make you laugh and at the same time infuriate you yet who always have your back, then this is the book for you. If you want to exhale squeals of laughter, or silently sob at heart wrenching challenges, then this is the book for you. If you want to be transported into the fascinating lives of characters who you now desperately want to meet, then this is the book for you.Good books stimulate, inspire and provoke a plethora of emotions. The Bridge Club does that in spades. So many emotions were aroused as I read it...joy, sadness, curiousity, doubt, anger, jealousy, empathy..I could go on but I won't as I don't want to give it all away. All I can say is, buy it, read it, and pass it on to your friends, your sisters, your daughters for you will be moved to recreate this most enriching circle of friendship.

By Mysunshine510 The Bridge Club, a novel by Patricia Sands, is a Finalist in the General Fiction category for ForeWord Reviews 2010 Book Of The Year and I can easily see why. The premise of this novel is: Eight women. Four decades of friendship. One unimaginable request. According to the author, the novel is based loosely on the author's own bridge club, and the story weaves the reader through a maze of life's inevitable scenarios. Any woman who has a lifelong, well connected friendship will love this book. The book introduces you to eight different women and takes you through the points in their life when they most needed the friendship of the bridge club. Each character has their own chapter to explain what they were going through and how they felt at that time. The first and last chapters explain to you why we're revisiting the women of the club. The last chapters threw me for a curve-ball. I couldn't figure out which of the eight women it was talking about, who was going through the problem that had led them where they were to suffer through what could be the hardest thing a friend could suffer through. I think the author did this to show us, the readers, that it can happen to anyone, you won't know who. This book was very well written. It was long enough (at approx 400pgs) for you to connect with and know each character. This is a thought provoking book that anyone who has a deep friendship will adore. Never ending friendship By Gabriela Lavoy This book had a slow start...but as you continue reading about the friendship of eight woman that spans over 40 years this book hooks you in. I was unable to put it down and it made me laugh and shed tears for the women in the club could have been any of my closest friends. You can identify with their issues of divorce, love, and illness.It is a true tale of never ending friendship.I was able to read this book through a complimentary copy, many thanks to the author because I really enjoyed it. Great summer read.

Fantastic Resource to Get Into JavaScript Robotics with Arduino Uno & Johnny Five By Andrew Connell I'm a seasoned JavaScript developer and aspiring hardware guy for my own personal projects. Having heard Kassandra on a podcast episode or two, I wanted to pick this book up. I found it very easy to grok and pickup the concepts. I am more of a Raspberry Pi guy and all the projects used the Arduino Uno - my only "complaint" that it should have been more visible in the marketing / cover - however I walked away placing an order for the Uno, something I've wanted to learn! All the projects were super simple to understand and implement... as a tech author I know how much work goes into this, but hoping for something that goes even deeper for her next work!

Covering examples from cowboy hats to hat pins, fascinators to cloches, the book has some easy projects for beginners to follow. Despite the excellent amount of photograph examples and directions, I did find the book to be a bit thin, especially on the inspiration side. But everything needed to make a hat (or hat pin) is included.The book shows how to make the following hats: wool cowboy hat, plastic fantastic cloche, straw brim hat, fascinator disk, bridal fascinator, horsehair fascinator, and a jinsin fascinator. Hat accessory instruction include making a feather flower and hatpins. Other topics covered include measuring a head, choosing a hat (face types e.g., round, square, etc.), what is a milliner, embellishments, caring for your hat, and setting up a hat studio workspace. Where to get specific supplies such as hat blocks is also included.At 140 pages or so, the book did feel quick. That means it can be viewed as focused or slight, depending on what you are looking for in a millinery book. Certainly there are many other books on the subject of hats alone and this is intended as a starter how-to and not a comprehensive bible on the topic. But at the same time, I wish I had been more inspired by the examples, which honestly did feel a bit art-school beginner.Thanks to the excellent photographs and step by step instructions (including where to get the very specific supplies) this is definitely a solid 4-star how-to book. It's a great way to get started in making one's own hats for costumes or self. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

The information and instructions are first class, and as a novice I would have no problems making a very swish hat for the races, or anywhere for that matter. The photography is excellent with the instructions extremely well displayed. The hats included are beautiful and very elegant, not a dud amongst the lot. I really would highly recommend this book to anyone that may think about trying the craft or a seasoned milliner.

Overall, this is a very well designed book. It is one of the best ones to come out in a long time that clearly explains classic millinery techniques. This is really important for someone who is interested in learning millinery. I already know most of these techniques but it was good to see Pfanenstiel the author in action.My problem with her book is that the hats lack excitement. With all the different types of trims available why would you want to stretch plastic fantastic over a hat? It looks like the plastic used for soda cans. Just asking.A few additional photographs would have been a solid four or five stars. For example, there is no photograph of how the cowboy hat looks after it it taken off the block. Instead you jump to the next two photographs of the author holding the wire and sewing it on the sewing machine. More close ups of the techniques rather than her hands would have been better. A short section on stitches used for millinery techniques would be useful.The book will pose some challenges for a beginner, however, it it a fine addition for your library.

96 of 111 people found the following review helpful. It's all true and the truth does hurt. By U2pop This is a padded edition with more hype on terrorism and fear than necessary. The original text by Lang and Xiangsui is a fascinating look at the true weaknesses of the American military system. It is with this book that China identifies America as its sole predominate enemy.I fully believe and support our military in any and all of its endeavors. However the book correctly points out, among other things, that the US has an obsession with human casualties. It is because of this that wars are fought from a distance, with technology, in order to minimize casualties. This is something that is very evident to anyone who's looked at the American military's history. From World War 2 to Desert Storm II, the increased use of technology and the public outcry over casualties has increased ten fold. This book, correctly so, advances the theory that in the event of a war between China and America, there will be an unconventional war sorts or rather "the war will be fought an won in a war beyond the battlefield" using terrorism, financial institutions, computer hackers, among many others.The sale of this book is mainly a money making scheme since the CIA translation is available for free all over the internet. On the other hand, this is an excellent book for any foreign policy enthusiast, but more importantly, for those military intelligence analysts who we hope are reading it. This is what China really thinks and the truth really does hurt.

Inside the "enemy's" mode of thinking By Dimitrios The book is a translation of the very interesting work published in February 1999 by two PLA colonels, namely qiao Liang and Wang Xiangsui and the first thing that strikes the reader is the clear mind and the scope of reading that these officers have as a background. Following Martin van Creveld's groundbreaking work "The Transformation of War" (1991), the authors consider the 1991 Gulf War as a crucial turning point in the history of warfare and declare that war between states will be the exception rather than the norm in the future. The target of the book was obviously to warn China (and PLA particularly) that it's not prudent to prepare for a conventional fight against the US military might (regarding the Taiwan issue for example) but to seek new methods by whom "the inferior can defeat the superior". The book's subtitle "China's Master Plan to Destroy America" is not absolutely justified and the reader will not find any clue that China has any connection with the islamic extremism (although the insurgency in Iraq suits her nicely). There are indeed some points inside the book which are really chilling, such as "whether it be intrusions of hackers, a major explosion at the World Trade Center, or a bombing attack by bin Laden, all of these greatly exceed the frequency bandwidth understood by the American military... This is because they have never taken into consideration and have even refused to consider means that are contrary to tradition and to select measures of operation other than military means". The great part of the book is its emphasis on future "non-military warfare" and the warning that "soldiers do not have the monopoly of war". It is unknown whether PLA's top leadership hes endorsed these views or not but there is a troublesome condemnation of the race for superior weapons technology without paying attention to the changing principles of war. The emphasis on non-state opponents like Osam bin Laden is really amazing given that 9/11 wass more thatn two years ahead when the book came out, but currently PLA does not invest only on hackers or financial warfare (althoug this last is a strong dimension of its foreign policy) bying instead modern Su-30s, "Sovremeny" destroyers and "Kilo" submarines for use in a possible war with Taiwan and its allies.The new kind of warfare which some people call "Fourth Generation War" or "Asymmetric War" has yet to prove its validity and despite some deaths that terrorists caused in the USA, Spain, Britain, Egypt (and more than 25.000 in Iraq) they have not achieved anything of lasting importance, thus their innovative tactics have been proved (for the time being) far less dangerous than classic conventional warfare of World War II type. I found very interesting the authors' suggestion of new principles of war (Omnidirectionality, Synchrony, Limited Objectives, Unlimited Measures, Asymmetry, Minimal Consumption, Multidimension Coordination and Adjustment and Control of the entrie process) but I don't know why they forgot to mention the old but crucial principles of "surprise", "security" and "unity of command". Overall it is an important study which seeks to find new ways to confront or negate the US military superiority but the theory has not proved decisive so far. Probably, the crucial turning point for the ascendancy of this theory will be the use of WMD at the hands of terrorist groups ot other non-state elements. As for PLA, it is rather impossible to conquer Taiwan without firing a shot. On the negative side of the book is the problematic translation of names, hence "Aegis cruisers" become "Zeus shield cruisers" and MacGregor's book "Brealing the Phalanx" becomes Maigeleige's book "Break the Factional Position". Many other names have been changed almost beyond recognition!For the reader who does not wish to receive such a heavy dose of theory though, I would strongly recommend Peter Howarth's excellent new book "China's Rising Sea Power" instead, which is full of data and a fine operational and strategic analysis of the Chinese goals and means in Western Pacific. It is rather expensive but it worths its money!

An Irresponsible Mis-representation By Vittoriano The subtitle of the translated work, "China's Master Plan to Destroy America" is added by the translator. If this book were indeed China's master plan to destroy America, would the Chinese military authority be so stupid to publicize its master plan?The Chinese edition, published in 1999, is not at all anti-America. The United States is indeed a major focus of the book simply because the United States is militarily the most powerful and advanced nation in the world, and it is the only nation that has fought in several major wars, particularly the Gulf War, with significant innovations in weaponry, military strategies and tactics. In fact the authors express their admirations and respects for the many innovations and accomplshments of the Amercian military in the Gulf War, and for the "father" Bush's wisdom of forming an international alliance to fight Saddam Hussein.As any analysis would do, the book does post questions on some U.S. post Gulf War military thinking. For instance, the authors are puzzled by th fact that the U.S. military still gave so much attention to tanks while in the Gulf War helicopters were proved to be the deadly weapon of destroying the tanks....On fighting the terrorist war and the future conventional warfare, the two authors are very much indebted to the ideas developed in Alvin Toffler's book, THE THIRD WAVE, and, particularly , in Alvin and Heidi Toffler's WAR AND ANTI-WAR. To illustrate the feasibility of their views, Qiao Liang, the first author of the book, published a novel MORI ZHI MEN or GATE OF ARMAGEDDON in 1995. In the novel, helicopters defeat tanks, and a war between two major powers ends without casualty (a prediction made in Toffler's WAR AND ANTI-WAR).... In the novel, The U.S. is a decisive player in the very delicate and complex international politics, but the novel's hero a Chinese colonel helps defeating the terrorists who attempt to destroy the world not by means of suicide bombers but by using computers (another Toffler's prediction). In CHAOXIANZHAN (UNRESTRICTED WARFARE), the authors are surprised to see that the West and the U.S. are so ill-prepared to defend themselves against terrorists.As the orginal Chinese UNRESTRICTED WARFARE or CHAOXIANZHAN was published in 1999, the cover of the translated English version shows the imgage of the horrifying destruction of the World Trade Center in 2001. This is a very unfortunate mis-representation either for some political purpose or for monetary gains.By the way, the two authors of the UNRESTRICTED WARFARE were not educated and trained as professional military men. Colonel Qiao Liang, for instance, received his B.A. degree in Chinese literature, and has published several notable novels. He is employed in the Creative Writing Departament of the Air Force, a Chinese military tradition of believing the power of literature, and was promoted to the rank of colonel because of his literary accomplishment.
