Hawser Martingale in the forecastle By Noah Count John Sherburne Sleeper was a New England journalist who wrote sketches and stories under the pseudonym of Hawser Martingale based on twenty-two years as a common sailor and ship captain. Jack in the Forecastle is the story of his first years of his service in the American merchant fleet from 1809 until 1817. The story begins, like many in this genre, with the first voyage. Sleeper sailed in brigs and schooners, the most common kind of ships available in the early republic. It was a dangerous time to serve: French and patriot privateers from the rebellious Spanish possessions haunted the Caribbean; British cruisers were on the prowl for sailors to impress; and the War of 1812 left many US sailors abandoned in foreign ports. Sleeper experienced all these circumstances. Beyond the predatory foreign ships, malaria and yellow fever were rife. Sleeper endured the first and bore witness to the latter. He experienced storms and lee shores and a stint in a Liverpool hospital with a broken leg. He spent much of the War of 1812 on the island of Grenada where he had been cast up alone and destitute. He met up with sailors of all stripes: some where innocent and naive; some were thieves, 'hard cases' and murderous mutineers. Sleeper shows special contempt for the drunkards. In fact, many of his tales of alcohol read like homilies in a temperance tract. This is not an uncommon feature of many tales from the era. A few of his stories are what Mark Twain would later call 'stretchers': tall tales with a humorous spin. Even with the temperance lectures, there are enough stories in this book to satisfy the most adventure-loving reader. The volume itself is the only reason I gave the book less than five stars. Though attractive and easily read, it is rife with typos in some sections. The first two pages of one chapter is filled with (torn page) tags interrupting the flow of the narrative. It represents sloppy editorial oversight which only mars the rich stories within.
