Each stage of the book is set with quotes from writers from Thucydides to Cormac McCarthy, setting the tone of bleak desert landscapes and tense battle scenes. Cinematic in its scope but intensely personal in its telling, The War Storytellers relates what could only have been ascertained by having been there, boots on the ground, in a place where decisions carry life or death consequences and where strangers can be a saving grace or a fatal foe.
