An interesting & useful book, well done by its Author--a pleasure to read, to study, & to enjoy By Anthony Rudgers Although brief (the last page in the book is numbered “36”) and directly addresses a rather limited topic, nevertheless, this book, "The Marx Mechanical Commodore Vanderbilt 1935-1948," is an important and useful contribution to the available literature concerned with toy trains. Plus, it is exceptionally well done and a real pleasure to read, to study, and to enjoy. Its author, James Perarek, has done an outstanding job in bringing his considerable knowledge to the toy-train community in a most attractive publication, replete with a great many instructive photographs. This book will probably be most useful to, and most enjoyed by, those who like to understand the history of toy trains, to learn of the many variants of a particular item (colors, features, construction details, etc.), and to study the production methods & the materials used by a particular manufacturer, in this case Louis Marx & Co., Inc. However, there’s also some useful information in Mr. Perarek’s book about maintaining and running “mechanical” trains (which are also called “wind-up” trains or “clockwork” trains). For those not familiar with the subject, the Marx Commodore Vanderbilt (CV) was a toy O gauge locomotive with a 0-4-0 wheel arrangement. Its body shell had a stamped & formed sheet-steel construction. It came in two varieties, electrically-powered and mechanically powered (that is, wind-up). While Mr. Perarek’s book addresses only the wind-up variety of the Marx Commodore Vanderbilt locomotive, I’ve found that much of the material in the book is useful in understanding many details of the electric variety of the Marx CV as well. The Marx CV is a fanciful representation of a historic real steam locomotive. That locomotive was the streamlined “Hudson” (with a 4-6-4 wheel arrangement!) of the New York Central System. The New York Central’s "Commodore Vanderbilt" was first shown to the public late in December, 1934. After a lengthy exhibition tour, the New York Central’s CV locomotive was assigned to pull one of that railroad’s crack heavyweight passenger trains, "The 20th Century Limited." It fulfilled that assignment until the Fall of 1937. Since Louis Marx introduced his version of the CV in 1934, the same year as the New York Central CV first appeared in public, the Louis Marx & Co. was “Johnny-on-the-spot” in bringing the latest in railroading to the kids of America in the midst of the Great Depression! The many, many CV locomotives built by Mr. Marx also enjoyed a far longer “run” (in years) than did the lone CV built by the New York Central System.A feature of the book that I found particularly attractive was Mr. Perarek’s obvious appreciation of and respect for all the trains in his impressive collection. Many of his photos show CV locomotives that are far from being in pristine condition. Often, chipped paint, rusting, and damage are prominent—for some items, “play wear” is less descriptive than “battle scars.” Yet these items are interesting and, in my view, attractive for what they are and what they represent; it matters little that they lack cosmetic perfection. Most toy-train “collector books” show only photos of perfect or near perfect items, unless those items are so rare & costly that an exception must be made. And many collector books do not feature, or even deal comprehensively with, the most commonplace and widely produced items that were intended for “low-end” mass-market sales at the time they were made. Marx wind-up trains were always among the most “low-end” of Marx trains sold, at the same time when Marx, overall, usually marketed the most inexpensive line of toy trains then available to the public. But Mr. Perarek doesn’t hesitate to show in his book the wonderful variety & scope of what the Louis Marx & Co. made so long ago, in spite of the fact that so many of the items he displays were once neither rare nor costly and have, over the passing years, endured much less than careful treatment at the hand of previous owners.Besides appealing to enthusiasts principally interested in Marx trains, this book might appeal to others more generally interested in the subject of vintage toy trains. Collectors of Marx toys of all types may also like to purchase a copy of Mr. Perarek’s book to aid them in their background researches. This book might also be useful to those who study & collect vintage wind-up toys of all kinds, whether made by the Louis Marx & Co. or by other manufacturers. Moreover, those historically-minded about "real RR-ing," who've a particular fondness for the NYC "Commodore Vanderbilt" locomotive, might like to find out more about the many toy representations of that famous Hudson steam engine by acquiring this book.
