Brilliant and obsessed, many of them found themselves addicted to hacking and phreaking. Some descended into drugs and madness, others ended up in jail.As riveting as the finest detective novel and meticulously researched, Underground follows the hackers through their crimes, their betrayals, the hunt, raids and investigations. By DC I first read this book back in the late 1990's when it was originally released after hearing the author, Suelette Drefus, on Triple J Radio in Australia. At the time, I was computer illiterate and barely even knew what a computer was, let alone what a computer "hacker" was. What makes this book VERY interesting is that it captures perfectly the story of the hacking "underground" in Australia during the early years of personal computers, so from a historical context, it is absolutely brilliant. From the very beginning right up until the end I was unable to put the book down for longer than an hour - it was just so good.In fact, it was so good that I ended up buying three copies of the book (one was worn out from over reading, the second had a major misprint with a particular chapter being repeated, and the third to keep - eventually lent to someone where it disappeared).Interestingly, one of the those mentioned in the book was Julian Assange (from memory under a pseudonym), the man behind Wikileaks. This book inspired me to buy a computer, learn what made it tick, and a year later, I began working in the IT Industry. It's been 15 years since I first read this book, and I'm about to buy an ebook copy so that I can keep it permanently.Yes, this book is THAT good.

Underground; a unique glimpse into the hacking world By Rachael Dean I found Underground to be a challenging read purely as I am not a hacktivist or a computer programmer at that, so had difficulty following some of the tech stuff. However I am an advocate for Freedom of speech and am interested in foreign affairs so in those respects found it fascinating.

Hackers and Freakers are now familiar terms but lets just call them Social Activists. The world needs brave people like these now more than ever. Peter Garrett, for God sake stand up for what you once believed in and get Assange home where he belongs.
