Review I was pleasantly surprised by this novel! While SciFi and Fantasy novels aren't my usual genre, I've started reading a few here and there...and this one was memorable. The characters, story line, and dialogue were of high quality--so high that I expect this could be the next big hit in YA literature. It really is that good. I think it could possibly fill a niche among scientifically aware and intellectually astute teens (and even adults), since the book avoids the supernatural but still manages to engage as a believable (?) fantasy. This is a great first novel by Jessica Lang, and I look forward hopefully to a sequel. Rob Squires Follow Miranda's journey of discovery (internal as well as external). The writing style is excellent. You feel the pine needles under your feet and smell the moist forest. No spoilers but some unexpected twists are on your way... Drake Wayson I'd like to stipulate, going into this review, that this book was not up my alley. It is targeted squarely at women in their teens and twenties. The slavish attention to social details were probably lost on me as a result. I am also not especially interested in vampires, especially not in the prurient way many women are as a result of the boom of me-too sexy vampire media that occurred following the huge success of the Twilight books and films. There is no avoiding comparisons, so let's tackle that right away. What sets this apart from Twilight is that it is written from an empirical, materialist perspective. There is no supernatural in this book. The "vampires" are genetically engineered humans with vampire-like traits, cultivated by an eccentric geneticist who later faced murderous outrage from disapproving locals. The setting for most of the book is a skeptic's conference, where attendees are invited to study popular myths (like vampires) and try to construct rationales for how they might exist, as a way of preconditioning them to accept the NOCS once they are introduced. This makes it an unusually thoughtful work for this particular genre. It may satisfy a not commonly appeased market of women who relish in borderline erotica starring handsome otherworldly men but which doesn't make them feel stupid as they read it. Satisfaction for the whole brain, in other words, rather than just the part which controls lower body bloodflow. This is sexy vampire fluff you can feel smart and unashamed of reading, and unreservedly recommend to friends. Providing of course that you're into that sort of thing to begin with. Robert Averill
