Of course, the '40 Ford is the star "actor" cleverly woven throughout, and you are immediately drawn in with a bootlegging adventure, but then story moves into current day: Honest businessman, wrongly imprisoned in Russia, has family member pulling in favors and with help from his college-age daughter (and the car!), a multi-layer plot unfolds to spring him. Complications arise at each turn and you are kept guessing--great intrigue. It is masterfully crafted with some humor sprinkled in. Surprisingly, this is the author's first book. Order this book now, and put it away for his birthday, anniversary, or that other special day. Even if he's not a reader, the cover art and much more by Darrell Mayabb, a name he will recognize right off, will suck him into this great read from the very imaginative mind of new writer Charles Clark. Clark has a remarkable knowledge of the fabulous Ford Flathead engine, and can tell a fictional story as if he was actually there, even if he does have to make a lot of it up. Your guy will keep the pages turning as soon as he discovers the accuracy of the technical details. In my 20 years as a contributing editor for most of the popular street rodding magazines, it is refreshing not to read terms such as a 1932 Ford Deuce, or a '40 Ford five window coupe.The primary story involves an impossible race challenge pitting a stock bodied, original engine powered '40 Ford Standard coupe against a Mercedes V12 S600. This will require the equivalent of 537 HP to push the old Ford to over 170 MPH! A very specialized group of BMW engineers in Germany pulls off the order in a fully logical and technically detailed thorough modification, so well imagined and thought through, it is actually believable! An absolute must read for any hot rod nut or Ford Flathead fanatic.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Car and humor By sandpk I enjoyed this book very much even though I'm not a complete car nut. The story and humor kept me coming back for more story. The book was well written and had a good story of intrigue and fun. The automobile components were a little above me but I did understand most of the automobile parts. Clark started the book with the start of the 40 Ford and told the story of each owner and then moved forward to present time and how it played a part in the race. Recommended for both male and female readers. We hope to get the author to join our book club next spring to talk about the book.
