Marsha Mehran was an international bestselling novelist with a multinational identity. She was born on November 11, 1977, in Tehran, Iran, and she lived in Iran, Argentina, the United States, Australia, and Ireland. Her first novel, Pomegranate Soup, was published in 2005 and became an international bestseller. The sequel, Rosewater and Soda Bread, was published in 2007. The Saturday Night School of Beauty, released in Australia in 2014 as The Margaret Thatcher School of Beauty, has also been translated into Italian and Polish. Mehran died in Ireland in April 2014.

Mystical poetry and lyrical writing By joyful Imagine coming upon Da Vinci's Mona Lisa in an unfinished state – perhaps a third of the details are sketched out, but not fully rendered with brushstrokes. Yet, you can still see without a doubt the lady's beauty, her mysterious smile, the grace of her hands. You can only visualize what the painting would look like in its finished state, but you can conclude from what was set down on canvas how breathtaking the whole would have been.That scenario is how I can best describe The Saturday Night School of Beauty by Marsha Mehran. It contains so many passages that excited me – beautiful, heartbreaking, profound, shocking, memorable. Often-times I would have to read some parts over again because they moved me. I love the narrative format of the book, which interweaves the background stories of Persian expatriates in Buenos Aires who come together for weekly poetry night. They recite and passionately discuss the Koran, Rumi, Hafez, and other poets, often illuminating the characters' psyches."What happened to people when they began to revolt, to change from within, and to become something else. That was why he loved poetry. What really drew him to the words. He understood those lines that called to him. Revolt, the turn in a turn."Mehran alternates from these poetry nights to exploring the haunting pasts of each character and what drove them from Iran to Argentina. These chapters are just as riveting as the poetry scenes, in that I felt immersed in Persian culture.Mehran's writing is as lyrical as the mystical poetry her characters discuss.However, there are some uneven sections in the book. Some characters' backgrounds and plots don't feel fully fleshed out. Sometimes, a chapter will start delving into one character only to abruptly switch to another character's narrative. This was puzzling, as it was obvious to me how gifted and skillful the writer seemed. I got my answer when I read the heartbreaking foreword by the author's father. It seems Marsha Mehran died before completing the book and her father did the best he could to get it in a publishable state.If you liked Reading Lolita in Tehran, you must read The Saturday Night School of Beauty.

Could happen By claudette valliere Another great book by Meyer.Abe Talley and the boys go from taking down jihadists to an unknown in North Korea.Talley isn't to keen on this op at all. I mean North Korea?? Hell he and the boys couldn't pass for a Korean if the're lives depended on it.He also has a smarmy CIA guy and a drop dead gorgeous female Korean scientist on the case.The scientist, with no combat experience whatsoever, is supposed to accompany them on this mission. Talley doesn't like it one bit and is of half a mind to refuse the whole deal.He finally agrees to go after the Admiral and the CIA dick tell him all about it.Its NK and a nuclear bomb that apparantly they now have. NK with a nuke?? Talley decides he and the boys need to saddle up and take on the mission.Thus begins a journey in NK and a date with a secret facility, a nuclear bomb, a North Korean scientist in charge of the project and a female scientist along to verify what they need to destroy.Loads of action and Talley knowing something stinks about the whole thing. However, once in he and the boys have no choice but to carry out the mission to the best of their abilities.A real rollercoaster of a story with twists, turns and a surprise ending.Another Five Stars for Abe Talley, the crew and Meyer.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Echo Six: Black Ops III By RS I'm usually reluctant to buy self-published/independent books like this. The writing, dialogue, characters, and stories are often wretched, so this book was a pleasant surprise. As far as special operations action goes, it's not quite at the same level of authenticity or professionalism of Brad Taylor or Dalton Fury, but it's an entertaining thriller and a quality book, especially for the price. The writing is decent and the characters are adequeate. There were a couple minor parts that stretched credibility, but it was nothing big, and the storyline about a NATO covert op into North Korea was still suspenseful and believable, the action is well written, and the author is familiar with his subject matter. It's a decent alternative if you're tired of repetive books from mainstream authors and publishers, and it was enjoyable enough that I bought the other books in this series.

Bridges I'm a fan of Eric Meyer's books, and this one did not disappoint. A story of the North Korean nuclear ambitions, and a fictitious operation to thwart them by and elite NATO unit, Echo Six.I was gripped from start to finish. Excellent book

About the Author Dr. Bob Ward was born on the Fourth of July, the son of a World War I veteran. He came from modest means, even living with his three siblings in a sort of orphanage at the age of six. Ward became a self-made man and one of the most important players in the evolution of professional sports. A former small college All-American, Ward learned by doing. He trained. He played. He coached. Ward earned his Doctor of Physical Education from Indiana University and studied sports science at its infancy with the U.S. Olympic team. He took that education and went on to implement it with the Dallas Cowboys in the mid-1970s where he joined Tom Landry's coaching staff as the NFL's first full-time conditioning coach. While activities such as yoga, CrossFit, and martial arts are now common, Ward was already implementing these programs with pro athletes and would revolutionize the way athletes prepared and trained. Ward believed in analytics long before it became a part of sports vernacular. His ideas studying and analyzing athletes and movement completely changed the way individuals trained and prepared in sports. What strength and performance coaches, and the athletes themselves, do today to prepare can be traced back to Dr. Bob Ward.

By Amazon Customer My father is a humble man, so I enjoyed reading a book about his accomplishments and contributions to the NFL and sports in general because he never talked about it at home. When he was inducted in the NFL Hall of Fame for Sports and Conditioning, I had to hear about it from my mother. He just never talked about himself. I was not ignorant of everything in the book, but had no idea my father was such pioneer in his field. When reading the book, it made me think about the movie "Moneyball." This book is a moneyball-type story. Tom Landry had vision, and he gave my father room to be a visionary as well. Creative and innovative people need an environment in which to explore. I always admired Tom Landry, but after reading this book, I appreciate the man and persona even more. Good leaders are hard to find because too many want all the accolades and recognition, but not Tom Landry. This is why the Cowboys were so good under his leadership. He fostered leadership and ingenuity in others; this is what good leaders do. I will be eternally thankful that God brought my dad to work under his leadership where my father was given the chance to utilize the skills and talents God gave him.

Provenance as Destiny By Kelly Hand A quick search on Amazon reveals that there are already some novels with the title Provenance, but the title has such wonderful resonance in Donna Drew Sawyer's novel that I hope it becomes the Provenance everyone thinks of. This novel is, in part, about an art world in which a work's origins and history determine its value. Provenance's protagonist comes from such a world also, and enjoys the privileges of growing up white and wealthy in provincial Richmond during the decades prior to the Depression. When his father informs him upon his deathbed that he had grown up in a "black" family and had chosen to pass as white to avoid being blamed (and possibly lynched) for the accidental death of a white man, Lance must reconsider his own provenance and its power to shape his destiny. This novel is fascinating in part because it demonstrates that even if racial identity is inextricable from the constant threat of discrimination, it also comes along with social networks that have sustained African-American communities in the aftermath of slavery.Lance's story constantly reminds us that "being black" is not simply a matter of skin color. As a legacy of slavery, mixed ancestry has enabled many people to shed racial labels, yet there are serious emotional consequences for all who sever family ties in order to fit seamlessly into the white world. Lance chooses to continue identifying as white, yet living with such a secret interferes with his ability to develop close bonds with others.Provenance is a gripping story with wonderful characters, and Sawyer manages to blend fiction and history in a convincing way. This is a quick, but substantive read that will nudge (if not force) you to rethink your perceptions of wealth, art, and racial identity

A Compelling Story about Race and Love in a Historical Context By Kristin Battista-Frazee Provenance is the perfect combination of a love story and historical fiction with added reflection on our country’s struggle with race. Although this novel is set in the early 1900s, it was striking how many of the themes around race, privilege and survival are still relevant today. The main character, Lance Henry Withers, grew up in Richmond, Virginia thinking he was a white man until at age 18 when his father, Hank Whitaker, revealed he was a black man passing for white. Lance’s struggle to come to terms with his father’s deception and his newly discovered African American heredity, will haunt Lance for the rest of his life. What readers will find most relatable is the reason why Lance’s father hid his African American heritage. The answer reflects anyone’s desire to protect their family and survive in the face of overwhelming odds, even it means portraying their own identity. Also reflected in this novel is details about the emerging art world before World War II and the swoon worthy love stories of the main characters. The best question raised in this novel, “Will you be the art or the collector?” which cuts to chase about how someone can control their fate or become a victim of it. I loved this book and highly recommend it.

Their strengths By Molly Matthews The author creates characters in this book that feel real -- and like friends. Their strengths, flaws, sense of humor (and in some cases, lack of it) remind me of people I know. I have no first hand experience of this historical period, or about passing, and yet everything about this book resonated with my life experience. All of us are passing in one way or another and how much we reveal about our past and who we really are defines us. The story unfolds during a fascinating time in history and in places such as the deep south and Paris which bring unique framing to what takes place. I was sorry when the book ended and want more stories by this author.

I had to admit I am amazed at how she puts all her thoughts into each story. Jonas Flash Chronicles demonstrate a story written in great depth. This Epic Fantasy Adventure will take you to a heart- warming adventure with Jonas and his friends. This book is akin to watching a movie, a very well put together plot, excellent portrayal of the main characters, a story full of emotion that it draws you into it. This is the kind of book that you'll love to read again and again.

First of all, the book cover was very well done. Very creative and very imaginative. I had big expectation on the book because the book cover was really awesome. And Heather didn't fail me. The story was breathtaking. It's jam-packed with action and fantasy and the characters, especially Jonah and Emma, were very lovable. Plus dragons! Who doesn't love dragons? The writing was excellent; the mixing of plot pace was perfect.This book has so much potential, this could be adapted into film.

Great transition by the author from the fantasy and real lives.I like how the author distinguishes the setting of the story with the illustration of the sword. It helps the readers not to get lost while being so engrossed with the current setting of the story. As much as it sounds like a book for young adults, I can't wait to read the other adventures of Jonas.

By LJT Return to You by Samantha Chase is an enjoyable second chance romance.Elder William Montgomery, is the family matchmaker, who has a knack for pairing his children, nieces and nephews with their true loves. This is a very cute premise and Ms. Chase does a nice job of bringing it all together. The two main characters, Selena Ainsley, an event planner, and James Montgomery, a detective with a passion for landscaping, were fun, interesting and likeable. Their chemistry was amazingly hot, yet mostly behind closed doors. I liked them both as a individuals and as a couple.After ten years of successfully being on her own, Selena has returned to her hometown in Long Island to organize her high school reunion. She loves her life on the Outer Banks, however she is lonely and still in love with James, her boyfriend from high school. They even planned on getting married, way back when. James still lives in town, working in a career that he is good at, but truly does not enjoy. His heart has never stopped aching for Selena. Due to a car accident, unnecessary parental involvement and immaturity, their relationship ended much to soon. Both have a ton of baggage that they need to discuss and unload, in order to move forward in their lives.Overall, this was an engaging reunion romance. However, the plot dragged quite a bit and I found myself skimming through some of the pages in order to get to the more meaningful interactions.Complimentary copy provided by the publisher via NetGalley.

Selena and James fell in love in their teenage years. They planned everything. From James' dream lawn business, their house, and to how many kids they're going to have. It was all set! But tragedy happened, and the two lovers had to separate without closure, just pent up anger and questions. After ten years, their paths once again crossed, and all those buried feelings from long ago came rushing back like an avalanche! It was an emotional mess for the two characters, and yet they can't seem to stop kissing each other even after ten years without communication AT ALL!The story did nothing for me, really. Selena needs to get a hold of herself and not lose control over James just because she still have feelings for him. He would kiss her and she would just let him. Then post-lip lock, they would get in a row with each other. I'm totally confused!! To me, it's like watching a bad episode of General Hospital or Days of Our Lives.The only best thing in this book is the ending, and that is why I gave it two stars instead of one.

By lep I received a complimentary book from Net Galley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.I had bought the first two bookw in this series because it was a better deal than just buying one. This is not the genre I usually read so I was afraid that it would be too romantic and too schmnaltzy. Boy, was I wrong. After I read the first one, I was so happy that I bought the second one. So when I saw this particular book, I knew that I had to get it and read it. And this fifth book did not disappointment me.The first two books were about single brothers whose father had decided that they needed to settle down and get married. So he decided to play matchmaker, and did an excellent job. In this book, the hero is a cousin to the first two heroes. The father did such a great job with his sons that he decided to work on his nephews.In this book, James and Selena knew each other when they were young. They had planned to get married, but Selena's father lied to James and sent him away after Selena was injured in a severe car crash. They have never forgotten each other nor have they moved on. James brother, Ryder finds out about Selena and calls his uncle to help get James and Selena back together.This is a wonderful romance; I could not put it down. Samantha Chase is very good at developing the characters. I fell in love with James and Selena and the "matchmaker." James and Selena have never really stopped loving each other, but over the course of the book, I could see their love grow and mature.The plots are not earth-shattering, but they are also well-developed so that we can watch the characters' feelings change and grow throughout the book. Not all of the story's situations are realistic, but most of it is. I didn't care anyway because I cared so much about James and Selena that I just wanted tos see them get together and have all of their dreams come true. There is no sex in these books; the author cuts away after they begin the process but before they actually get into it.I loved this book and already have the next books to review. So I am off to continue the series.

Riddled with typos By JHB This book provided a decent overview of HTML and CSS but it was difficult to read due to the extensive number of typographical errors. A good review / edit session would greatly improve this book.Also, the early chapters of the book included sample output from the code but the later chapters on CSS did not. Including sample output for the CSS section would be helpful.

There is one B&W photo on most pages, illustrating the vehicle discussed in one of the "Facts." For example, check out that "Vega Wagon," Fact #371, which was built in a basement.As an example of the editing quality, notice that when you open this softbound book, the inner margins are wide enough, so that you can clearly read that portion of the page. To keep the flow of things, the book is divided into 6 chapters: Diggers Digest, Fascinating Funnies, Pro Stock Rock, the Eliminates, The Supers and the Stockers, and Tracks and End facts. Good information for tech job seekers By Amazon Customer I got a hardcopy of this book from a friend, and I found it to have a lot of good advice for tech industry interviews. It's written more from a developer/software engineer's perspective, but I've held a few different positions in the industry over the years and the information presented matches my experience from those other positions well. I also like the additional chapters written by a psychologist and a woman in the tech industry, since they have additional perspectives and good information to share.

I saw the rug pattern and thought it would be fun to make. However the layout of this book, in e-book form, is so confusing the pattern didn't seem like it matched. This is a line from that pattern. chaining one to one.  Initiating in the first row of the blanker, sc into each row down, towards the side of the pot holder (55 sc’s)  (Sc, ch 2 sc) ? Too bad because the rug is cute. The other patterns, which include purses, potholders, pillows, scarfs are not okay but not anything I would make.

Reviewed by Loraine Oliver By Loraine Oliver The Visitant by Megan Chance is written in a style that reminded me of Gothic Romances when I was growing up where everything is not what it seems and there seems to be someone watching you, and at the Basilio Palazzo where Elena Spira is sent to nurse Samuel Ferber back to health, it was entirely believable.After Elena makes a terrible mistake that caused a big mess for her family and public disgrace for herself, Elena is sent to Venice to nurse a man named Samuel back to health. Her father felt out of sight, and out of mind, and he wanted his daughter to be free of all the scandal in New York, so he sent her that far away to bring Samuel back better, as Samuel's very wealthy parents have decided it is better to get him married and hopefully healed in body mind and spirit. On top of that he suffers from epilepsy which is something that was a stigma back when this novel takes place.When Elena gets to Venice she can't believe that where she will be is at a Palazzo that is crumbling and in a sad state of disrepair. The water in the canals is filthy and smells bad and there is black mold all over the outside of the palazzo and the inside is almost as bad. When she sees Samuel for the first time, he had taken so much laudanum, that he looked so out of it. She sees that he is not aware really of anything and she confiscates the laudanum and hides it. When Samuel is awake again he begs and demands his medicine back, as he really is in pain, but the laudanum confuses him and causes him to have hallucinations that end up causing him to have seizures.When Elena tries to get help from the other people there, they just offer no help at all, and one of the women is a bad influence on Samuel and gives him what he wants which is another reason Samuel is so sick. Elena repeatedly has to chase this woman away from Samuel and the last straw is when he drinks a whole bottle of liquor. One night before her eyes Samuel starts going into a seizure but not before he acts like he can see the ghost of a woman that he thinks is really there! Elena can smell the rotten sea and a distinct smell of perfume as well!An impoverished nobleman Nero Basilio, Samuel’s closest friend and the owner of the palazzo, finally arrives and Elena finally gets some answers, and he thinks that there is indeed a ghost! There seems to be dark forces there that not only hold Samuel in thrall but Nero as well. Caught between these two, Elena is desperate to find out what is going on but nothing is as it seems and then something horrible happens!This book was so well written, the descriptions of everything is very detailed and everything from the food to the clothes and the way the people talk there is so well documented to make this book a real ghost story- mystery and the stage is set for the unthinkable to happen and it does. The characters are all well developed, the atmosphere is perfect and together it all works to make this story really work!The plot is excellent and swiftly moves from one stage to the next, and there is even time in all of this for Elena to fall in love! The end of this book will surprise you as it did me and I really loved how it endedI gave this book 5***** awesome stars and hope to read more by this author.

When the reader first meets her, she’s in Venice on a gondola. When the gondolier stops before the Ca’ Basillo, she observes, “the three-story palazzo was white stone, and so ruined I thought perhaps the gondolier had got it wrong. No one could possibly live here.” She finds the housekeeper, Giulia, most unwelcoming.Elena had been sent by her father from New York to nurse Samuel Farber back to health after he’d been badly beaten – then to return him to New York where he is betrothed to be married in January. His friend, Nero Basillo, allowed him to stay at the palazzo as long as he needed to recuperate. It doesn’t take Elena long to feel that things are amiss, like she is being watched. She observes the strange waking dreams Samuel has of an angel. Elena believes he is hallucinating until she also begins to see something … but what?It’s a wonderful story but I felt it was just a bit drawn out. Elena is a very appealing character with a bit of naivety and I could feel her frustration as she was trying to tend to Samuel Farber’s needs without an ounce of help from anyone. Even the ‘not so nice’ characters were believable and well-defined. The author uses wonderful imagery of the scenes so that the reader can practically imagine him or herself there. Rating: 4 out of 5.

I love Venice and mysteries, though I'm not fond of historical novels. I realize reading a book based on locale alone is not wise but though with the ghost story twist this book might work. The book was nothing more than historical romance disguised as intrigue. The book was slow and often repetitive, not to mention predictable. I skimmed several chapters half way through not missing any of the pertinent details of the story. If you like historical romances, this is the book for you.

By Brett Bingham, DVM As a veterinarian working in the trenches every day I whole heartily relate to Dr. Lefkowitz' description regarding the realities of veterinary medicine. As surprising as this might sound, veterinary medicine is much more a people business than an animal business. It is essential that young fledgling veterinarians understand it's not just cute puppies and fuzzy kittens. This is a very difficult and challenging profession as we interact and balance human relations and emotions combined with the human-animal bond. Although difficult, there are a lot of reward as well. Dr. Lefkowitz does an amazing job of bringing reality, humor, and emotion into this well written book. I highly recommend this to anyone aspiring to be a veterinarian. You will love it.

Great book for that vacation trip or long airplane ride. A very eclectic intelligently written book!

Well written, heartfelt, humor By Val Warner I may be a bit biased since I had the pleasure of being a veterinary technician, with the author, for several years. I am really enjoying the stories, some of which I was already familiar with. I have been reading it with my 11-year-old son who wants to follow in his mother's footsteps and become a veterinary technician. The book is told with a lot of heart felt humor and the honest truth of what it is like to work in that profession.
