Fat City is a vivid novel of allegiance and defeat, of the potent promise of the good life and the desperation and drink that waylay those whom it eludes. Stockton, California, is the setting: the Lido Gym, the Hotel Coma, Main Street lunchrooms and dingy bars, days like long twilights in houses obscured by untrimmed shrubs and black walnut trees. When two men meet in the ring—the retired boxer Billy Tully and the newcomer Ernie Munger—their brief bout sets into motion their hidden fates, initiating young Munger into the company of men and luring Tully back into training. In a dispassionate and composed voice, Leonard Gardner narrates their swings of fortune, and the stubborn optimism of their manager, Ruben Luna, as he watches the most promising boys one by one succumb to some undefined weakness; still, “There was always someone who wanted to fight.”

Fat City (New York Review Books Classics), by Leonard Gardner

From Library Journal LJ's reviewer found this "sordid saga of cheap hotels, cheap women, cheap dreams, and little or no fulfillment" to be "expertly written" (LJ 9/1/69). The plot finds palooka Billy Tully teaming up with a young would-be fighter who is destined to follow in Tully's footsteps.Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review "Sometimes, somehow, someone gets it right. The reissue of Fat City, Leonard Gardner’s pitch-perfect account of boxing, blue-collar bewilderment and the battle of the sexes, is cause for celebration, and reflection.” —Paul Wilner, San Francisco Chronicle "A slim, taut book that has earned its status as a classic by dint of its immaculate, evocative prose, a compassionate but dour view of the human condition, and the absolute credibility of its depiction of the sport of the busted beaks...Though Fat City was written long before cellphones or the Internet, its human apparatus is state of the art. With this new edition, new generations of readers and writers will discover it, learn from it, and find both wincing pain and deep pleasure. Gardner’s achievement lives on precisely because Fat City is not depressing. The tale is dark, but it is charged with energy. It is seductive, engaging, and lit, despite the odds, by a vitality that is in itself a form of hope. We come away from it burnt clean.” —Katherine Dunn, Slate“A meditation on rugged beauty and abject degradation.”—Sam McManis, The Sacramento Bee"Really a superior performance...Gardner takes us into the bitter fancies of two professional prizefighters...the first is a has-been, the second is learning to lose. A third character, their manager, links the pair in defeat and frustration...Gardner strips them of everything except the most important thing: their singularity...of such a seemingly small gift is dignity born and success measured." --Newsweek“Gardner…writes like a sad poet…free of clichés and sentimentality… a beautifully written book.”—Brian Greene, The Life Sentence"Fat City affected me more than any new fiction I have read in a long while, and I do not think it affected me only because I come from Fat City, or somewhere near it...He has got it exactly right...but he has done more than just get it down, he has made it a metaphor for the joyless in heart." --Joan Didion"Gardner has laid claim to a locale that others have explored, but seldom with such accuracy and control...in a tone that is both detached and lyrical. The triumph of the book is its action. Running, fighting, loving, weeding, harvesting, these men stay in motion in order not to be doomed. So powerfully does Gardner record their actions that we recall their lives, not their defeats." --The New York Times Book Review"Gardner's book should be taken slowly. The chapters are constructed with great care, worked, polished and fitted like a precision parts in a beautiful engine. There is a comic chapter on the physical attributes of boxers which could easily be overlooked, three pages as delicate and funny as the calmer Twain. Chapter Four, a short section ending a magnificent description of a boxer doing roadwork, withstands the closest scrutiny." --Frank Conroy, Life"The stories of Ernie Munger, a young fighter with frail but nevertheless burning hopes, and Billy Tully, an older pug with bad luck in and out of the ring, parallel one another through the book. Though the two men hardly meet, the tale blends the perspective on them until they seem to chart a single life of missteps and baffled love, Ernie its youth and Tully its future. I wanted to write a book like that." --Denis Johnson, Salon"By almost any criterion imaginable, Leonard Gardner's Fat City is one of the two or three very best boxing novels ever written. That it rates among the Top Ten is pretty much beyond dispute." --George Kimball, The Sweet Science"Leonard Gardner wrote Fat City as a moody elegy to the wayward dreamers who fight in tank-town arenas, then retreat to flophouses and shotgun weddings, day labor and rotgut drinking binges." --John Schulian, L.A. Times"In his pity and art Gardner moves beyond race, beyond guilt and punishment, as Twain and Melville did, into a tragic forgiveness. I have seldom read a novel as beautiful and individual as this one.”—Ross Macdonald

The Tough Battle for Survival By William Hare Billy Tully and Ernie Munger are two young men living in the Northern California delta town of Stockton. Their world is the violent one of boxing, but their struggles for survival are more universal than just any conventional story about men battling professionally in the squared circle. You do not have to be a fight fan to appreciate this arresting work.Leonard Gardner has followed the rule of thumb laid down years ago of "Write what you know." Gardner grew up in Stockton and knows the lower middle class world he describes with graphic brilliance. He was an amateur boxer, giving him a knowledge of how men struggle to survive in that competitive and highly dangerous world.Gardner's story craft is straight out of Albert Camus, in many ways reminiscent of his epic novella, "The Stranger." His descriptions of dingy bars and dreary hotel rooms ring with clarity, transferring readers to a world of existential survival where some cling to hope while others have long since given up.Tully was on the verge of being a contender but lost a major fight, hit the bottle, and quit boxing. He got a job as a short order cook. After going to the local high school gym to work out he meets Ernie Munger. At 18 Ernie is eleven years Tully's senior. He becomes so impressed by Munger's moves that he recommends that he visit Lido Gym and look up his former manager. When Munger begins boxing amateur Tully's interest increases and he is motivated to launch a comeback.Tully and Munger seek extra money by working as field pickers under a broiling sun. Tully finds temporary romance with Oma, a woman he meets in a bar with such a propensity for alcohol that he moves out of her dingy hotel room and back to his own, warned by his manager that she will destroy his concentration as he prepares for a main event bout in Stockton. Meanwhile Munger impregnates a young local woman, marries her, and with additional incentive, turns professional.Gardner wrote the screenplay for the electrifying film version directed by John Huston, which starred Stacy Keach, Jeff Bridges and Susan Tyrell. It matches the tenaciously gripping, Camus-like existential reality of the book.

Gardner wrote the screenplay for the movie, directed by John Huston, in 1972. The book remains in print in a series of novels based in California called "California fiction". I came upon this book by chance. It is little-known but a treasure. The book is about boxing and low life, faded dreams, lack of prospects, booze, rooming houses, failed relationships in a small California town. The two primary characters are Billy Tully and Ernie Munger. Billy at age 29 is a washed-up fighter who has lost his wife and several jobs and is sinking deeply into alcohol and oblivion. Ernie is 19 years old and a boxer who may have potential. He marries a young women named Faye, after getting her pregnant, and takes up the ring as a professional in order to support his wife and child. The paths of the two men cross in the gym at the beginning of the book and their careers take parallel courses. Billy had lost an important fight in Panama some years earlier when his manager, Ruben Luna, forced him to travel alone to Panama in order to save on expenses. He makes an attempted comeback at the age of 30 and actually wins a decision in a brutal match with an aging Mexican fighter. He returns to fighting to try to save himself from depression over the loss of his wife, his lack of prospects, and his loneliness.Ernie Munger is young and works at a gas station. Although he has some boxing potential, his skills appear limited. As had been the case with Tully years earlier, Ruben Luna sends Munger out of town, (to Las Vegas) for a fight to save on the expenses. This is Munger's first professional fight which proves more successful for him than did Tully's fight in Panama. The book ends darkly, but with a hint of the possiblity of personal growth and true independence for Munger. The descriptions in this book of bars, of women, of cheap hotels, of the training for fights, and of the fights themselves is compelling. This is a strong picture of boxing at its seamiest which yet captures the fascination that this sport holds for many -- myself included. There are also many scenes in the book of the life of seasonal, agricultural workers in northern California. One of the most memorable portions of the book occurs when Tully and Munger sign on for day work in picking nuts. Tully climbs upon a ladder on a tractor and beats the nuts from a tree with a stick where they fall on Munger's head as he gathers them into a bag. The rage and the frustration of both men is palpable.Gardner writes with a spare understated style which does not moralize. The characters and their experiences speak for themselves. It is highly effective. There is a picture here of despairing men with small visions but also a real sense of underlying humanity, of hope, and of valuable, if fallen ideals. This will be a rewarding novel for the reader who wants to go slightly off the routine path.

I have read, I'd guess, 250-300 novels by contemporary writers since I read a glowing review of FAT CITY in a San Francisco newspaper years ago, sometime in the early 1970s, and bought the novel, mainly because I was brought up in San Jose, California, and wondered what could a writer find in the humble tank town of Stockton to write about. When I finished reading it I just looked out the window, so moved was I by the characters in the novel, and by Gardner's storytelling prowess. And to this day -- going on 28 years later -- I swear that I have not read a contemporary novel that has affected me as profoundly as FAT CITY did, and still does whenever I reread it, which is every year or two. Gardner's craft is wonderful to read -- the cadences of his sentences are gorgeous; you find yourself wanting to read it out loud to yourself, just to relish the drum beat of the syllables. (The only other writer I can think of who constructed sentences that way in English is Joseph Conrad.) Gardner's understanding of his characters, and of human nature, makes you shake your head and smile, even as his characters are blindly reeling toward sad destinies. This is American literature of the finest kind -- and though Gardner has not published a novel since FAT CITY in 1969, I know that a whole lot of people hope that he will again. He has the gift and this novel is proof.

It is the late fifteenth century and a village healer in Russia called Laurus is powerless to help his beloved as she dies in childbirth, unwed and without having received communion. Devastated and desperate, he sets out on a journey in search of redemption. But this is no ordinary journey: it is one that spans ages and countries, and which brings him face-to-face with a host of unforgettable, eccentric characters and legendary creatures from the strangest medieval bestiaries.Laurus’s travels take him from the Middle Ages to the Plague of 1771, where as a holy fool he displays miraculous healing powers, to the political upheavals of the late-twentieth century. At each transformative stage of his journey he becomes more revered by the church and the people, until he decides, one day, to return to his home village to lead the life of a monastic hermit – not realizing that it is here that he will face his most difficult trial yet.Laurus is a remarkably rich novel about the eternal themes of love, loss, self-sacrifice and faith, from one of Russia’s most exciting and critically acclaimed novelists.

Laurus, by Eugene Vodolazkin

Review "LAURUS is no seamless dream of Russia’s past, but a very clever, self-aware contemporary novel that nevertheless holds that dream deep in its heart.... The fools are holy, but they also bash each other and defend turf. A great deal of the novel’s humor derives from this kind of absurd juxtaposition. On this earth, one can never quite break free of petty, ridiculous, earthly concerns. Even the ancient sage Christofer is regularly consulted about “bedroom matters.” Much of the humor in Dostoevsky has exactly this origin.Equally rich are the novel’s clashes of language and diction, a savory stew made up of high and low, the ecclesiastical and the obscene, as well as the crazily modern. Translator Lisa Hayden had a tall order before her — Vodolazkin’s book in Russian overflows with Old Church Slavonic, contemporary slang, obscenities, bureaucratese, literary language. In translating, she avails herself of the contemporaneous Middle English Bible for much of the syntax and archaisms, but also a range of slang, curses, and other vocabularies. The result is a wonderful, at times almost Monty Python–esque blend of biblical vanisheth, synne, and prude, right alongside shithead, jeez, and Brownian motion.Under the spell of LAURUS, we imagine what it would be like to measure life in seasons and harvests rather than clocks and clicks, to walk in hallowed paths and receive ancient wisdom, to suffer and cleanse the soul. "— Janet Fitch, author of White Oleander and Paint It Black, in The Los Angeles Review of Books"For Russian literature, the glorification – indeed sanctification – of the irrational is anything but new, but here it is delivered with great aplomb and narrative charm. Indeed, the most infectious element of Eugene Vodolazkin’s book may be its faith in language as a kind of charm.... Many readers are likely to find the book enchanting, if not palliative."— Boris Dralyuk in The TLS“Vodolazkin is a beautiful storyteller… His fluctuations and riffs on language are entertaining and enriching — carefully transmuted into English by the able Lisa Hayden —and Arseny’s journey is a rumination on what it means to be human, to be Russian, to spend a lifetime seeking atonement. This is an epic journey novel in all the best traditions. There are countless colorful characters, exciting twists of fate, and profound truths in the protagonist’s words and deeds. And, through it all, there is a distinctly “Russian flavor” – something like The Idiot meets Canterbury Tales meets The Odyssey. Highly recommended.”— Russian Life Magazine “A novel about the life of a 15th-century Russian monk might sound an unlikely bestseller, but Eugene Vodolazkin’s extraordinary tale Lavrus became a literary sensation, won Russia’s Big Book award in 2013, and was shortlisted for numerous other prizes.... So what’s the appeal? Vodolazkin’s spiritual odyssey transcends history, fusing archaism and slang to convey the idea that 'time is a sort of misunderstanding.' … Vodolazkin explores multifaceted questions of ‘Russianness’ and concludes, like the 19th century poet Fyodor Tyutchev that Russia cannot be rationally understood. This is what leads him, with a gradual, but unstoppable momentum, to place faith and the transcendent human spirit at the center of his powerful worldview.”—Russia Beyond the Headlines "Steeped in religion, Arseny is a character who is almost too good to believe, and his supernatural diagnostic and healing powers too simplistic. Yet for all that, LAURUS is a gripping, weirdly fascinating read — very Russian, perhaps, in its fundamental outlooks and presentation, and certainly very carefully and well crafted (so also in Lisa Hayden’s English rendering.) B+, odd but compelling."—Complete Review "Vodolazkin succeeds in walking a thin line, achieving a fine balance between the ancient and archaic, and the ultra- modern; between the ironic and the tragic."— Time Out"Medieval Russia was a land trembling with religious fervor. Mystics, pilgrims, prophets, and holy fools wandered the countryside…. A new novel by the Russian medievalist Eugene Vodolazkin, LAURUS, recreates this fervent landscape and suggests why the era, its holy men, and the forests and fields of Muscovy retain such a grip on the Russian imagination.... In LAURUS Vodolazkin aims directly at the heart of the Russian religious experience and perhaps even at that maddeningly elusive concept that is cherished to the point of cliché: the Russian soul." — Ken Kalfus in The New Yorker"What kind of novel makes you want to enter into contemplative prayer after reading from its pages? I’ve never heard of one. But LAURUS is that kind of novel. It induces an awareness of the radical enchantment of the world, and of the grandeur of the soul’s journey through this life toward God. ... Holiness illuminates this novel like an icon lamp.... This is not a book about good and evil, but about what is real and eternal and what is false and temporal...Vodolazkin is himself a kind of wonder-worker, and LAURUS is without a doubt one of the most moving and mysterious books you will read in this or any other year. The world of its characters is spiritually spellbinding, and the reader should not be surprised to find that it evokes within himself a desire to pray, and thereby take what feeble steps he can to walk alongside the humble healer Arseny on his life’s pilgrimage."—The American Conservative"Winner of Russia's National Big Book Prize, this saga of 15th-century Russia captures both its harshness and its radiant faith in a narrative touched by the miraculous. Arseny is born in 1440 near the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery and raised mostly by his grandfather, who teaches him to be a healer like himself. Plague takes the remaining family, and after further tragedy our hero launches on a pilgrimage across Europe, surviving violence, princes, and holy fools before becoming Brother Laurus. VERDICT Engaging sweep; for all readers.”—Library Journal “LAURUS is, in one breath, a timeless epic, trekking the well-trodden fields of faith, love, and the infinite depth of loss and search for meaning. In another, it is pointed, touching, and at times humorous, unpredictably straying from the path and leading readers along a wild chase through time, language, and medieval Europe. Vodolazkin’s experimental style envelopes the reader, drawing them into a world far from their own, yet indescribably intimate.... Kaleidoscopic in his language and reach, Vodolazkin takes us on a journey of discovery and absolution, threaded together through the various, often mystical lives of Arseny as a healer, husband, holy fool, pilgrim and hermit.... Love is shown through loss; death through agelessness; words through silence; the human in the divine. In life’s extremities, Vodolazkin has found a subtle balance and uses it to impressive effect."— Asymptote Journal "Vodolazkin, an expert in medieval folklore, transforms the dreadful past into a familiar stage on which to explore love, loss, and fervent perseverance.... In a stroke of brilliant storytelling, Vodolazkin forgoes historical accuracy and instead conjures a cyclical, eternal time by combining biblical quotes, Soviet bureaucratese, and linguistic conventions of the Middle Ages (in this translation, rendered into Old English). The result is a uniquely lavish, multilayered work that blends an invented hagiography with the rapturous energy of Dostoevsky’s spiritual obsessions."—Booklist "Bold, rich and complex, LAURUS deals with large issues: the concept of time, love and death, love and guilt."—Historical Novel Review"While it’s true that [Vodolazkin's] book manages to make the coarse, expansive, and frozen universe of the medieval Russia he reconstructs a seductive alternative to ours, this isn’t yet where it shines. LAURUS shines where it’s able to depict in vivid shades that elusory place where language and grace are indissolubly—even hypostatically—one."—First Things Magazine“Love, faith, and a quest for atonement are the driving themes of an epic, prizewinning Russian novel that, while set in the medieval era, takes a contemporary look at the meaning of time. Combining elements of fairy tale, parable, and myth, Vodolazkin 's second novel is a picaresque story exploring 15th-century existence with gravity and a touch of ironic humor. ... Unobtrusively translated, the novel's narration flows limpidly, touching humane depths, especially when depicting sickness, suffering, and death, which is often. Vodolazkin handles his long, unpredictable, sometimes-mystical saga and its diverse content with confident purpose, occasionally adding modern visions to the historical landscape, part of a conversation about discontinuous time. Traveling across Europe and Palestine and then back to Russia, Arseny, who will become Ustin, Amvrosy, and finally Laurus, will eventually complete his long, circular journey and reach a place of repose. With flavors of Umberto Eco and The Canterbury Tales, this affecting, idiosyncratic novel ... is an impressive achievement.”— Kirkus Reviews"Fifteenth-century Europe serves as the vast stage for a roving Russian healer who leaves his village on a journey of repentance, turmoil, and growth toward Jerusalem. Vodolazkin’s expertise in the medieval world rounds out this tale that defies the restrictions of this long-ago time and place in its treatment of universal human pains and regrets.”— Nota Bene pick, World Literature Today

About the Author Eugene Vodolazkin was born in Kiev and has worked in the department of Old Russian Literature at Pushkin House since 1990. He is an expert in medieval Russian history and folklore. He lives in St Petersburg, Russia.

The hero of the story is a medieval man who lives through four major phases in his life, changing his name as he goes - Arseny, Ustin, Amvrosy, Laurus. Left alone in the world after grandfather Christofer's death, Arseny inherits his gift of a healer. He cures his patients with herbs, words and nothing. But when his beloved woman dies in childbirth, he cannot forgive himself for overestimating his powers to restore life where it is threatened. Unable to overcome the guilt and grief for his stillborn son and Ustina, who died without confession and in sin (as they had not been married), Arseny decides to reject his own life and live in Ustina's stead to win eternity for her.Now Ustin, he travels far and beyond, curing the victims of the great plague. The novel unfolds a story of a life devoted to love at its many layers. Vodolazkin portrays a magnificent range of life on the medieval road, in movement but out of time's joint. We follow the hero's life as a holy fool in the graveyard of a nunnery through to his pilgrimage to Jerusalem with an Italian Catholic seer. Ambrogio's visions throw us forward into a familiar Petersburg setting and farther into the unknown future; in constant searches for the time of the end of the world the novel leaves us on its pages frustratingly faced with the nonentity of time.Vodoazkin's beautiful portrayal of holy fools demystifies, or rather mystifies, the concept of yurodivy associated with Russian Orthodoxy (but not unique to it). The writing is soaked in religious beauty without the least Orthodox bias. At times we are reminded of Hesse's Siddhartha, but then the novel flows in the spirit of the invincible Russian literary tradition of pathos and Dostoevskian depth; and at yet other times, it is a pure philological triumph.Written with glimpses of medieval Russian tongue, the texture is rich with live and quaint depiction of medieval life. Vodolazkin exposes - in naked, vulnerable and crisp language - the magic and the grotesque of religion and the human soul. You are strained from the first page to the last. It can get obscure but is in no way a dry read. Vodolazkin's archaic seasoning is complemented by his sublime sense of humour. Lisa Hayden's beautiful translation in English manages to preserve the linguistic diversity of the novel as far as is possible without making it sound tasteless. In the dusk of his life, Laurus returns to Kirillo-Belezorsky Monastery where he came from. The ending is chilling, repulsive and unexpected. Vodolazkin pushes us back into the medieval reality of the novel, the religious mystery and an unequivocal world of ugly holiness which we believe we have navigated a long way from - but have we?See full review on HuffPost UK blog.

A masterpiece of mystical Christianity By Rod Dreher I am rarely at a loss for words, but it is especially difficult to find the right ones to express how luminous, how wondrous, is this book. Often I would set it down on my lap, dazed and dazzled. As a religious believer, I generally don't care for religious fiction, because it is very, very difficult to represent the life of the spirit accurately. The only fiction I've ever encountered that does this as well as "Laurus" are the Elder Zosima chapters of "The Brothers Karamazov". But don't think for a moment that "Laurus" is only a book for and about mystical medieval Russian Orthodoxy. It is a book about the mystery of life, and how, out of the ruins of our humanity, can emerge a goodness so pure we call it holy.

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. A novel of the Russian Orthodox soul, set in the Middle Ages. By Global Octopus My tenth-grade English teacher once reproached me by quoting the aphorism "We don't judge a classic; it judges us." Whether or not Laurus is a classic will not be known for a century or two, but it is of sufficient weight and complexity to judge the reader. Hence the five stars. Who am I to doubt?Russia underwent three traumas in the last century--the Revolution, the forced industrialization and repression of Stalinism, and the Second World War. The first two were accompanied by the worst persecution of Christians in history. The demise of communism has led to a revival of the Russian Orthodox Church, with the support of the state. My recent read, Everyday Saints, and this book were both best sellers, and bear witness to this trend. In fact, Vodolazhkin was secretly baptized as a child, and feared exposure as a Christian in his university days.He has written a book which expresses the legendary Russian soul and certain aspects of the Russian version of the Orthodox world view.Set in the Fifteenth Century, with occasional leaps to other times, the book traces the life of his hero, in four stages, represented by his four names, Arseny, Ustin, Amvrosy, and Laurus. Arseny metamorphoses throughout the book, from a rural healer, to a "fool for Christ," a pilgrim, and a monk, among other things. In the course of the book, we are treated to elements of historical fiction--a recreation of the era in rural Russia, of magic realism with leaps in time all kinds of strange and miraculous events, a meditation on the meaning of time, an introduction to many aspects of Russian Orthodoxy, and a touch of the picaresque, though without the cynicism of, say, the Lazarillo de Tormes.I have no Russian, but I take it on faith that there is much word play with archaic vocabulary and constructions. These the translator has tried to signify by introducing strange spellings of words from time to time. I think that experiment fails, rather like a gift shop that tries to project antiquity by labeling itself "Ye Olde." That said, the book is quite readable, with short chapters, live prose, and a rapid unfolding of events. It is no doubt the case that this book is not for everyone. People who are impatient with things religious, feet set in the concrete of their skepticism, might find this book annoying. Such readers' willful suspension of disbelief will require something of an effort. If one is interested in the Middle Ages, the Russian soul, or Orthodoxy, you are likely to find the book rewarding.Someday soon, I may read it again.

By Janet K Steinhoff The patterns were well researched, but they were not always well reproduced. One of the patterns was cut off on the bottom. I know this because I have a piece from the fifties with the complete pattern. In fact I embroidered it. I guess I am officially vintage!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. LOVE THIS BOOK! By B. Smith Love this book! I grew up in the 1950/60's and the designs in this book represent much of the needlework that my mother and grandmother worked with. The patterns are authentic and easy to reproduce. Nice variety of themes for different uses and decor. It's chock full of patterns from beginner to more advanced stitching. I love the beginning with a little history of stitching with pictures and the section on tips and how-to's. I've always been a fan of Suzanne McNeil, and this book did not disappoint. I can't imagine the hours of research and digging she must have done to accomplish putting all these wonderful patterns into one book. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves vintage projects. It will inspire you to create something original that will be treasured for years!

Puggy is back for part two in the Spy Dog’s series. Previously in “A Suspicious Neighbor”, Puggy saw a news report discussing the disappearances of dogs around the city. Right around that time, Puggy noticed that his next door neighbor did not look like a typical human. He learns later that the man is an alien who is responsible for the disappearances of the animals. The alien was experimenting on the dogs so that they could be modified with advanced technology. Due to a twist of fate, Puggy finds himself modified and it was up to him to stop the alien while making sure his owner Bill doesn’t find him out. “Cat’s Revenge” begins when Bill comes home one day more excited than what he normally is. The reason for this is because Bill won a cat in a raffle! Unnerved by this, Puggy couldn’t do anything but become jealous of the fact that the cat would probably earn more of Bill’s attention. When the cat finally does arrive, Puggy is alarmed to see that the cat was the same cat from the alien’s house that he had beaten months before. The aliens were back and they were using the cat, who they call Killer, to complete their goals. Puggy is now on the journey to fend off Killer and stop the aliens from acquiring his body, his home, Bill and the entire world. However, Puggy is not alone in this battle because Mannie, his Jack Russell friend, is here to aid his friend. Will the dogs succeed in taking down Killer and the aliens, or will Killer be too much for Puggy to handle?

The writing was good, the story was clear, and you actually learn a lesson from it, which isn't always the case in kids books anymore. My kids both really liked looking at the pictures, as well as reading the story. I've already been asked to read it again since the first time, so I'd call that a success!

The Color of Time (The Color of Heaven Series Book 9), by Julianne MacLean

About the Author Julianne MacLean fell in love with some of the classic romances Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and Pride and Prejudice while completing her degree in English literature. Then she decided that she needed a "real job," but after a brief stint as a government auditor, she realized she just didn't care enough about numbers matching up. So a month before her wedding, she sat down and wrote the first paragraph of a romance. Now fifteen years, a husband, and a daughter later, Julianne is a happy, fulfilled, stay-at-home mom and a devoted romance writer.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. her 1st love, 15 years ago By Vivian In the 9th installment of the Color series we learn more about Sylvie Nichols and why she moved in with her sister. Grammy has an accident and Sylvie is the only one who can take time to go home and help. Sylvie thought she was past what happened with Ethan, her 1st love, 15 years ago. She quickly learns that's not the case when she has a vivid dream about Ethan and their 1st summer together. After waking from her dream she is disoriented for a moment, because it felt so real, but she knew that couldn't be possible. She decides she is going to finally put the past to rest, which turns out to be harder than she expected. She finds herself in an alternate reality on more than 1 occasion where her past and present have been changed. She experiences twists and turns that will pull at your heart strings, but she eventually finds her place, a place in life she feels she is supposed to be.Is this just a dream Sylvie is experiencing? Or has she truly changed her past and found where and who she is meant to be? Will things take another devastating turn? This is a must read and I'm definitely looking foward to the 10th installment of this series, The Color of Forever.

I always find myself very introspective after reading one of her books and The Color of Time was no exception. We met Sylvie Nichols in the previous book The Color of Joy, so we got to know a little bit about her in advance of this book. Or did we? In The Color of Time, the author attempts to answer the age old question: "What if you just did one thing different, would life have the same outcome?" She demonstrates how that question can be answered through Sylvie's experiences. Several of them. What's unique about Sylvie's experiences is that while she was actually dreaming, her alternative realities are real to her. They are real to us. They happen. As the story progresses, you find yourself wondering which reality is the REAL one. And you are as heartbroken as Sylvie each time when you find out something you experienced wasn't real - because it happened. It had to have happened.Ms. MacLean's character development is strong, as always. Her characters are what draw you into her books and the emotions they experience are read to the reader. It's very easy to be drawn into a Color of Heaven book and experience it right along with the characters, emotions and all. This is not your typical paranormal, where you would expect magical powers, fantasy characters and the like. Sylvie's experience of alternate realities is the only paranormal aspect to this story - the characters and storyline are rooted in reality and the everyday experiences in a wonderful north eastern town.In the end, Sylvie's story ends up the way it was meant to be, but she and the reader take a wonderful, heartbreaking, mysterious path to get there. It's so difficult to discuss much about this book without divulging spoilers, so I'll just reiterate what I said at the beginning. YOU HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK.

What can I say, it's not a paranormal, yet it has time travel elements. It tells the story of Sylvie Nichols, who has never been able to forget her first love. One day, she returns to the town where she first meet him, but life will never be the same for her. Is she dreaming, is she really being transported in time, will the past and future collide, or is it simple wishful thinking...She finds herself in a complicated plot with time- travel elements in paralleled worlds. Lots of emotions, filled with twist and turns.I love this series, but this one is not my favorite story, sorry, Ms. MacLean! I can't wait to read the next story in The Color of Heaven series. This writer is very talented and I strongly recommend her books!

Born with one foot in light and one in darkness, she is torn between both. Melea is the greatest warrior in the world. In service to the Lord of Light, she uses her abilities to kill for his divine vision. Shadows grow larger as the Light spreads—the world and the forces that define it are changing and Melea is caught in the center. Melea denies being a villain, refuses to be a hero, and would rather slash with the razors edge than walk along it. Fate spins, or so it is said, and Melea is cursed with the luck of the dead.

New Author on the Block Pleasantly Surprises By CBoyd Tyler Sehn has created a world in Rua that has potential to be so vast that the Spiritbinder War Series could be truly epic when all is said and done. I enjoyed that the characters range all over the universe he has created with different societies, customs and practices in each one. As the story went along you begin to see how the different nations start to mesh together. Melea is a character that leaves you wondering but no matter how her conscience serves her you still end up rooting for her to keep going and do the right thing. Several other characters grow throughout the book which makes it a page turner. I found times when I would be reading waiting for the next Kerak chapter only to cross a point with the Saleros and forget I wanted the Kerak chapter until i was pleasantly surprised by his story coming to front a few pages later. Where Sehn's writing prowess really comes out is in the battle scenes. He has a knack for making readers think, "That was epic…what happens next can't be better." and then the next scene is bigger and characters do extraordinary things to get themselves out of binds. He does this in a way that is believable within the context of what the ritual universe allows in Rua. A great up and coming author who has swung for the fences with what looks like part one of I don't know how many novels but I am looking forward to what is next.

The author takes great care in establishing the politics of the Shining Empire By Amazon Customer Daughter of Shadow takes the reader on journey through the fictitious world of Rua, where you placed in start of the Shining Empires early attempt of global conquest and the spreading of the power of the Lord of Light. The author takes great care in establishing the politics of the Shining Empire, as we see the the starts of a power struggle between the leaders of the Church of Light, and of neighbouring Empires as they struggle to prepare for the inevitable attack from the Shining Empire. As the characters seek to hold onto the power or seek to gain more, they are forced to align with old foes, and in the process have their worldview and allegiances challenged.Where the DoS really shines is in the character development, where the characters have the ideologies challenged and see them struggle to reassert their place in the world. This is most strongly demonstrated with Melea, a warrior in the Shining Empire army, where she is challenged seek to live up to the expectations set upon her by her adoptive father the Emperor of the Shining Emperor. Melea is a true tragic character (Don Draper'esque), where each time she manages to provide some redeeming character growth she is pulled back by her past mistakes and fractured past.In the end DoS, provides the reader with excellent start to what promises to be great series and I cannot wait to read the next.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. profound relationship thriller By A Customer CanyonsSamuel WesternDaniel & Daniel Publishers, Sep 28 2015, $14.95ISBN: 9781564745743In 1970 at the Ladderback Ranch in Idaho, University of California at Berkeley BFFs Eric Lindsay and Ward Fall go hunting accompanied by the former’s twin sister Gwen. Ward starts to put away the shotgun, but accidentally fires a shot that instantly kills Gwen.In 1998 on their Wyoming ranch, Ward’s three children fear him especially when he frequently drinks to numb his guilt. His loving wife Lorraine tells him it is past time for his reconciliation with Eric. Meanwhile in Southern California renowned songwriter Eric remains in a rage that has intensified over the last quarter of a century. Encouraged by Lorraine, Ward invites Eric to their MK Ranch. Eric arrives and soon the once best friends head out on a hunt though the visitor plans to kill his host. This is an interesting relationship drama starring two former buddies with dissimilar personalities but share in common being haunted by the accidental death. Ward and Eric seek atonement in radically different ways; whereas the rancher needs Eric to forgive him; the musician needs to kill his host in order to avenge his beloved sibling. Samuel Western writes a profound contemporary rustic thriller as the audience wonders if either is coming home.Harriet Klausner

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A quietly building novel of suspense and carefully observed detail, fate, culpability, and redemption. By Hal Herring Sam Western's first novel punches far above its weight class. From the horrific accident that opens the gates of the story to the colliding destinies of the main characters, this is a stripped down-to-the-essence book that puts the reader inside starkly contrasting lives and landscapes. Ward Fall is a Wyoming rancher, a depressive, and an intellectual family man with just enough pragmatism, and the right wife, to make a small cattle operation prosper. His boyhood best friend Eric Lindsay is a brilliant studio musician and former songwriter, in debt and on the skids in a small apartment in Los Angeles. Both are a million miles away from the Nebraska Sand Hills that formed them and the blood debt that binds them, the debt that will be paid, one way or another in the high country beyond Ward's ranch.Canyons is a journey, where Western ( a veteran journalist and essayist) can somehow be as assured writing about a loan shark enforcer in LA, or the intricacies of studio musician work, as he can about sighting-in rifles, packing horses, and hunting elk in the Bighorn mountains. It's an experience of careful observation and real people caught together in what seems like a building hurricane of their own, and fate's, making. Highly recommended, obviously.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent! By Lucy L. LaCasse This little book packs a lot, but somehow remains simple and straightforward in all it complexity. A true western novel (fun play of words...). There's not much fluff, yet the descriptions are simultaneously stark and beautifully rich. and it's a page turner with psychological suspense. This is a powerful (and quick) read. I very much liked this book and will definitely recommend it to my book club.
