Review 'This is a comprehensive guide with clearly illustrated drawings, which will definitely be a useful addition to your library.'' this guide is a good overall reference 'On the back cover of Fundamentals of Sharpening: Straight Talk for Today's Woodworker (Back To Basics) it says this book will teach you to "embrace the fun and essence of sharpening " I'm not so sure sharpening is fun but this book does cover the sharpening basics including maintaining hand tools, bits, and carving tools. The book has sections on bench grinders, bench stones and other sharpening accessories and helpful shop tips are also scattered throughout. I'm still not convinced sharpening is "fun" but this book will get you going in the right direction and should help you get good at it. Maybe that makes it fun.Despite the proliferation of power tools in recent years, hand tools are still an important part of the modern woodworking shop. "Fundamentals of Sharpening" will show you how to keep saws, chisels, gouges, planes and other tools working at their best, increasing efficiency and creating better finished products. (Sharpening a handsaw excerpt)This Sharpening book should be added to your books on sharpening and there are lots of them available. The Back to Basics books are excellent reference books and deserve a spot in your woodshop. About the Author John Kelsey is a journalist and editor specializing in woodworking and furniture making. He has a degree in woodworking and furniture design from the School for American Craft at the Rochester Institute of Technology. He is a former editor in chief of Fine Woodworking magazine and a publisher of woodworking and home building books at the Taunton Press. He is the author of Furniture Projects for the Deck and Lawn. He lives in Newtown, Connecticut.

Not what you think By BitTwiddler I got this used at a steep discount, so in that sense I got what I paid for (and why I gave it three stars, had I paid full price it would have been two). Not enough detail, not enough information. The cover art is somewhat misleading. My advice is to keep looking, this book is not going to be an asset to your wood and metal working library.

The title is correct, the techniques portrayed in this book are the most basic of sharpening fundamentals. By the look of the grinder on the cover I assumed (incorrectly) that there would be some good information on using a bench grinder. Basically you get an explanation of what it is and the components that make up a grinder but that's about all. Nothing about the types of grinding wheels you should have in your tool box. Nothing about what basic sharpening stones you should have or the types of sharpening tools you should have at a minimum. Save your money. You can find better and more detailed information on the web.
