There was a time By GloriousBibliophile Justinia, our complicated beautiful heroine, comes from an upper crust African-American family with touches of mystery. Her remarkable professionalism and determination propel the reader into her relationship with Julius, a Jewish fellow. Lauren Cecile's sparkling prose celebrates the bygone era well. Difficult to believe that this is her first novel due to its depth and polish. Eyes Like Mine transports us to a time and place in which Justinia's and Julius' merely dancing was considered to be scandalous. The novel has an intriguing historical subtext about oppression and self-actualization. You will really enjoy the novel's keen attention to detail and delight in where the story takes you!

Well written, thought provoking and poignant, the author forces the reader to think about the impact of race, religion and class during the pre-Holocaust era. Justinia, a wealthy American Negro, and Julius, a Jew from Germany, meet at an NAACP convention and find that though their backgrounds couldn't be more different, their philosophies on life are quite similar. We learn about the lives of each through their first person narratives. Headstrong Justinia makes her own decisions about the course of her life, despite the expectations of her overbearing, high brow mother. Julius leaves his close knit family during a volatile time for Jews in Berlin, to attend law school in America. An unlikely friendship evolves between the characters, as the writer expertly weaves a historical context into the backdrop.A must read!

A Unique Glimpse of Seldom Explored African American History and Culture By DDS Writer "Eyes Like Mine" was like walking through the history of aristocratic African Americans in Washington, DC and the growing persecution of Jews as the Nazis rose to power in Germany. Told by the two main characters, Justinia and Julius, the story takes us through historical events in the early 20th century. I consider myself well versed in this period since my novel, "Provenance," takes place during the same time in history. However, author Lauren Cecile, provided this reader with remarkable historical details of the time, place, customs, triumphs and causalities that are, in my opinion, the best part of the book.I wish that more had been made of the love story between the main characters; more dialogue between them than thoughts about them. The intimacy of a forbidden love story was, for the most part, missing. The author told me that Justinia and Julius were attracted to each other but I was never shown why - their passion was missing. For that reason the radical decisions Justinia made and the obvious sacrifice Julius did not make, did not really ring true to these characters.Overall, "Eyes Like Mine," is a chance to delve into a subset of African American history and culture that is not often written about and, we are given the opportunity to better understand its importance in the context of American history. The parallel story of the Jewish journey from up standing citizens to persecuted non-citizens in Hitler's Germany is equally important and insightful. The skillful blending of these two historic timelines makes "Eyes Like Mine" unique.
