About the Author KATHY GIUFFRE is a professor and sociologist specializing in social networks, cultural sociology, and Polynesian society. Giuffre was invited to present a TED Talk about her research in 2013. She is the author of a memoir, An Afternoon in Summer: My Year in the South Seas (Awa Press, 2010), as well as two academic books covering her areas of expertise. Giuffre received her Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a B.A. from Harvard University. Currently, she and her family live in Colorado Springs, Colorado where she is the A.E. and Ethel Irene Carlton Professor of Social Sciences at Colorado College.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. LOVED this book By HHT LOVED this book!!! I laughed, I cried, I learned new things and remembered some things I'd forgotten. On the surface, this is a timeless coming of age story, about a young woman making a place for herself in the world. Her voice is startlingly authentic, simultaneously brash and vulnerable as she navigates love, sex, friendship, and loss, getting by with a little help from her friends and a large quantity of alcohol, much of it consumed in a subterranean small-town bar, the Cave. The characters surrounding her are equally compelling: Commie Tom, Stinky, Vera, and the rest of the crew are so vivid I'm not 100% sure I didn't actually know them when I was a college coed in a small Southern town myself. While the main plot line is down to earth, accessible, and flat-out funny, it's interspersed with reflections based on Plato's Cave allegory and bits from Edith Hamilton's Mythology, elevating it with a delightfully detached and philosophical perspective that highlights the dignity and poignancy of all human lives, even and maybe especially those struggling to survive in less than ideal circumstances. This ones goes on my "favorite books" list; I shared it with 2 other people (both men who read a lot) and they loved it too. Interestingly we all 3 plan to re-read it; partly because the sly sophistication of the Plato/mythology parts makes us suspect we missed some angles worth revisiting, and partly because we enjoyed it so much we want to do it again! You should read this book. You'll be glad you did.

A moving, philosophical take on one slice of recent American life By Bodhidharma Very touching story of a young woman choosing how she wants to be in the world, surrounded by a number of colorful characters giving very positive, negative, and richly nuanced, ambiguous examples of possible choices. Has some beautifully poetic passages, some very moving moments, and also contains what must be the most unexpected interpretation and turn on Plato's Allegory of the Cave in about two thousand years.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Romantic first novel from a gifted author By Howard Aldrich I got so absorbed in the story that I lost all track of time! I read the book through in one sitting & suspect that many other readers will, too. Kathy Giuffre made me care about her characters & their fates, leaving me rooting for Josie (the narrator of the story & its heroine) and turning the pages anxiously, hoping she’d end up ok in the end. I was surprised when Plato, Socrates, and other figures from philosophy & Greek mythology initially made their appearance, but then I started eagerly anticipating when I’d hear about them again. An added pleasure was that I recognized some familiar places & scenes from North Carolina which contextualized the story brilliantly. Great debut novel!
