Florence Gordon, by Brian Morton

Review

"Always a pleasure to read for his well-drawn characters, quiet insight and dialogue that crackles with wit, Morton here raises his own bar in all three areas." -- Kirkus, starred review

"Morton’s characters are sharply drawn, vivid in temperament and behavior, and his prose smartly reveals Florence’s strength and dignity." --Publishers Weekly, starred review

"Morton’s intelligent, layered portrait of a feisty, independent older woman is an absolute joy to read, not only for its delightful wit but also for its dignified appraisal of aging and living life on one’s own terms." --Booklist, starred review "Morton (Starting Out in the Evening) has created an obstreperous, rebellious character who is likable for being true to herself." --Library Journal

“Combining a rigorous intellect and a deep humanity, this is the story of a feminist hero, a family coming together and apart, and the ways we interpret the past and attempt to face the future. Most of all, Florence Gordon shows how passion — of one type or the other — shapes a heart." —Alice Sebold, author of The Lovely Bones

“Perceptive isn't a strong enough word to describe Brian Morton's insight into family dynamics; psychic is more like it. From the nuances of a long marriage to the inevitable, infinitely sad divisions and tender connections between grandparents and parents and children, Morton nails it all. And somehow he still manages to be funny, even as he breaks your heart.”—Emily Gould, author of Friendship

"Florence Gordon is a marvelous creation. Like many great characters in English literature, she is a sacred monster, fully realized and richly present in the pages of this thoroughly enjoyable book."—Vivian Gornick, author of Fierce Attachments and Approaching Eye Level

"A marvelously wise, compassionate, funny, rueful and altogether winning novel.  Brian Morton knows inside-out this tribe of witty, thoughtful people who, for all their decent values and good intentions, can't seem to narrow the unbridgeable distance between men and women, young and old,  pride and compromise, solitariness and community. Florence Gordon is his most generously ample, humane and vital book."—Phillip Lopate, author of To Show and To Tell and Against Joie de Vivre

"Florence Gordon is one of contemporary literature’s most wondrous characters: flawed and brilliant, funny and serious, totally unforgettable."—Darin Strauss, author of Chang and Eng and Half a Life

“Florence Gordon belongs on the very  short list of wonderful  novels about older women. Florence, the brilliant, cranky, solitude-craving feminist writer, is an indelible character, and her New York—the fading city of books and writers and melancholy oddballs —lives on in these immensely pleasurable pages.”—Katha Pollit, author of Learning to Drive: and Other Life Stories

From the Inside Flap “Always a pleasure to read for his well-drawn characters, quiet insight and dialogue that crackles with wit, Morton here raises his own bar in all three areas . . . [Florence Gordon is] a treat.” — Kirkus Reviews, starred reviewMeet Florence Gordon: blunt, brilliant, cantankerous, passionate, feminist icon to young women, invisible to almost everyone else. At seventy-five, Florence has earned her right to set down the burdens of family and work and shape her legacy at long last. But just as she is beginning to write her long-deferred memoir, her son Daniel returns to New York from Seattle with his wife and daughter, and they embroil Florence in their dramas, clouding the clarity of her days and threatening her well-defended solitude. And then there is her left foot, which is starting to drag . . .With searing wit, sophisticated intelligence, and a tender respect for humanity in all its flaws, Brian Morton introduces a constellation of unforgettable characters. Chief among them Florence, who can humble the fools surrounding her with one barbed line, but who eventually finds there are realities even she cannot outwit.

47 of 49 people found the following review helpful. It's Not Easy Being a National Treasure By E. Burian-Mohr Florence is a brilliant woman, an early feminist, a writer, a seasoned New Yorker, a thinker, a fiercely independent 75-year old woman, and, in the early pages of the book, declared a "national treasure." She's also cantankerous, dismissive, and blunt. Within the first few pages, she deliberately drops a friend's Blackerry into a pitcher on sangria, ditches her own surprise party, and calls her granddaughter by the wrong name. All she really wants is to write and to be left alone. That's not happening. Her daughter-in-law Janine, who idolizes her, has come to work on a psych fellowship. Son Daniel, a Seattle cop, is there to spend some time back in New York. And granddaughter Emily is there, doing her New York thing over summer vacation from Oberlin. They all expect to spend some time with Florence.Florence is exactly the kind of woman you'd want for a friend and exactly the kind of woman you wouldn't want as a friend.Example of Florence-You'd Want-as-a-Friend:There's a huge line ta Duane Reade (a pharmacy, for we non-New Yorkers) and two cashiers. A tired-looking woman with a bottle of shampoo is about to step to the newly vacated register. A guy walks to the front of the line, cutting in front of probably 60 people, and starts to unload his basket in front of the open-mouthed cashier. Florence steps up to the plate."Can't you see there's a line here?" Florence said to him, pointing with her cane."There's two lines," he said, without even looking at her."Take another look.""What's it to you?""You don't throw your trash on the street, you don't serve yourself first, and you don't cut in line. It's called civilization.""F-- you, you crazy old bitch," the man said to Florence. He dropped the basket and left the store. The tired-looking woman came forward with her shampoo."Thank you," she said to Florence."You should stand up for yourself," Florence said. Then there's Florence-You-Don't-Want-as-a-Friend. The one so wrapped up in her thoughts that she passes her son Daniel without seeing him. The one who calls her granddaughter Emily "Emma." The one who baits DIL psychotherapist Janine about the pointlessness of talk therapy. At everyone's urging, Florence makes Emily her assistant and puts her through her paces. Emily not only steps to the challenge; she starts to challenge Florence, and an affectionate relationship grows. And yet...Here you have a cast of characters, each deeply intelligent, literate, and learned. But they seem incapable of communicating with each other about anything meaningful. Emily is struggling with a bad relationship with someone who is making unhealthy decisions and demands. She needs reassurance, yet she can't turn to anyone in her family. Daniel has a heart episode on a weekend alone in the city and shares it with no one. Janine is entering an illicit relationship with a co-worker and can't speak of it to anyone. And Florence... well, she's got a lot going on, too, and yet she shares it with no one. They've got tons of brains and thoughts and insights and vocabulary, but all any of them can do is tentatively ask, "Are you okay?"The book is a great character study of an intriguing woman and her family. And you know that, sadly, they are not okay.

Skillfully drawn characters, realistic dialogue but feels unsettling and incomplete By Tracy Marks When I discovered that Brian Morton had published a new novel, I was thrilled. His STARTING OUT IN THE EVENING is one of the most skillfully crafted novels I've read, and I was hoping that FLORENCE GORDON would be just as impressive. Unfortunately, it is not. But that doesn't mean that it is a bad novel – it's not..Morton is most talented in regard to creating characters, letting us into the complex and idiosyncratic thought processes which motivate their behavior, and revealing them through realistic dialogue. In FLORENCE GORDON, he does so with four characters:FLORENCE – the 70+ bristly, assertive, "pain in the ass" feminist writer who is unexpectedly being heralded as a national treasure because of her contributions to feminism;JANINE – her daughter-in-law, who is more preoccupied with a male colleague than her own husband;DANIEL – her son, who harbors suspicions about his wife which he is unable to communicate;EMILY – her college-age granddaughter, who helps her with her research, and wishes to become emotionally closer to her, despite the fact that Florence usually pushes people away. Emily is also struggling with her own relationships issues, and seeking to act with the firmness and directness of her grandmother.Often, in just a few lines, Morton makes insightful statements about his characters which may resonate with personal experience of the reader as well as illuminate the character. For example, Daniel says of his father and mother: "Saul just has his career. So when his career is going badly – as far as he's concerned, everything in the universe sucks. Florence has always thought of herself as participating in something that will outlast her."Occasionally too, Morton also surprises us with a bit of humor, as he does in his description of Emily's ex-boyfriend: "Justin was vegan as she was, but he took it further.....he turned down the broccoli her mother had made, explaining that he was now trying to eat only the simplest forms of plant life. He was feeling increasingly bad about killing vegetables."Initially, I was hoping that this this novel would be primarily about Florence, but the other characters were also a major focus. Florence and Emily, however, were the most interesting. By shifting back and forth between four characters in 111 (!) brief chapters, Morton sacrificed some of the depth with which he is capable of writing – as he did in STARTING OUT IN THE EVENING.In FLORENCE GORDON, although communication struggles and difficulties seemed to be a theme expressed by all major characters, and was a subtle unifying force, the book might have been more effective if Morton had focused almost entirely on Florence and Emily, relegating Daniel and Janine to peripheral status. It would also have been more satisfying if he ended had more resolution, and felt less like a dropping of several key threads of the story. What after all did Emily learn from Florence? And was her grandmother truly a constructive role model, worth emulating in her own relationships? Read the novel and answer these questions for yourself. FLORENCE GORDON is not a memorable book, but is quite effective in portraying character, and for that reason, is worth reading.

It’s character-driven, and the characters are supremely well drawn. The New York City setting is handled so well that it could almost be considered another character. The writing is clear, interesting, and dramatic -- but that’s it.There’s essentially no plot, no dramatic insight or denouement, and no conflict unless we count the conflict between the title character, Florence Gordon, and everyone she encounters. Florence is an old, cranky, self-important woman. She dislikes that people respect and defer to her mostly because she was in the vanguard of the feminist movement, but she makes a point of not giving anyone any other reason to care about her. She doesn’t care if people like her, and I didn’t. In addition to Florence, all of the characters are struggling with personal issues, from retirement to divorce, all of which remain unresolved.I had to give 3 stars because despite what I saw as this book’s failings as a novel, Brian Morton’s writing is exceptionally strong. If you enjoy character sketches and would find that enough reason to read this book, I would highly recommend it. Otherwise, if you already struggle to keep your reading list under control, you might not want to give a slot to Florence Gordon.

Build real-world, industry-strength data storage solutions with time-tested design methodologies using Cassandra

About This Book

  • Explore design patterns which co-exist with legacy data stores, migration from RDBMS, and caching technologies with Cassandra
  • Learn about design patterns and use Cassandra to provide consistency, availability, and partition tolerance guarantees for applications
  • Handle temporal data for analytical purposes

Who This Book Is For

This book is intended for big data developers who are familiar with the basics of Cassandra and wish to understand and utilize Cassandra design patterns to develop real-world big data solutions. Prior knowledge of RDBMS solutions is assumed.

What You Will Learn

  • Enable Cassandra to co-exist with RDBMS and other legacy data stores
  • Explore various design patterns to build effective and robust storage solutions
  • Migrate from RDBMS-based data stores and caching solutions to Cassandra
  • Understand the behaviour of Cassandra when trying to balance the needs of consistency, availability, and partition tolerance
  • Deal with time stamps related to data effectively
  • See how Cassandra can be used in analytical use cases
  • Apply the design patterns covered in this book in real-world use cases

In Detail

There are many NoSQL data stores used by big data applications. Cassandra is one of the most widely used NoSQL data stores that is frequently used by a huge number of heavy duty Internet-scale applications. Unlike the RDBMS world, the NoSQL landscape is very diverse and there is no one way to model data stores. This mandates the need to have good solutions to commonly seen data store design problems. Cassandra addresses such common problems simply.

If you are new to Cassandra but well-versed in RDBMS modeling and design, then it is natural to model data in the same way in Cassandra, resulting in poorly performing applications and losing the real purpose of Cassandra. If you want to learn to make the most of Cassandra, this book is for you.

This book starts with strategies to integrate Cassandra with other legacy data stores and progresses to the ways in which a migration from RDBMS to Cassandra can be accomplished. The journey continues with ideas to migrate data from cache solutions to Cassandra. With this, the stage is set and the book moves on to some of the most commonly seen problems in applications when dealing with consistency, availability, and partition tolerance guarantees.

Cassandra is exceptionally good at dealing with temporal data and patterns such as the time-series pattern and log pattern, which are covered next. Many NoSQL data stores fail miserably when a huge amount of data is read for analytical purposes, but Cassandra is different in this regard. Keeping analytical needs in mind, you'll walk through different and interesting design patterns.

No theoretical discussions are complete without a good set of use cases to which the knowledge gained can be applied, so the book concludes with a set of use cases you can apply the patterns you've learned.

Style and approach

This book is written in very simple language and an engaging style complete with examples in every chapter and real-world use cases at the end of the book.

Rajanarayanan Thottuvaikkatumana, "Raj", is a seasoned technologist with more than 23 years of software development experience at various multinational companies. He has lived and worked in India, Singapore, and the USA, and is presently based out of the UK. His experience includes architecting, designing, and developing software applications. He has worked on various technologies including major databases, application development platforms, web technologies, and big data technologies. Since 2000 onwards, he has been working mainly in Java-based technologies, and has been doing heavy-duty server-side programming in Java and Scala. He has worked on very highly concurrent, highly distributed, and high-transaction-volume systems with NoSQL data stores such as Cassandra and Riak and caching technologies such as Redis, Ehcache, and Chronicle Map. Raj has a lot of experience in integrating Cassandra with Spark and has shared the Scala code repository on GitHub. Raj holds one master's degree in Mathematics and one master's degree in Computer Information Systems, and has many certifications in ITIL and Cloud Computing to his credit. Apart from all this, Raj is a prolific corporate trainer on various technical subjects and has contributed to the Apache Cassandra project. When not working with computers, Raj watches a lot of tennis and he is an avid listener of classical music. Even though Raj has worked on many white papers and training materials, this is his first publication in the form of a book.

A superb introduction to Cassandra for anyone approaching the subject from a traditional RDBMS background By Frank [Disclosure: I am the Technical Reviewer of this book]Cassandra Design Patterns is a superb introduction to Cassandra, for anyone approaching the subject from a traditional RDBMS background. All the important fundamental concepts are explained clearly and concisely, and in RDBMS terms. The book provides historical context surrounding the application design, which helps the reader to grasp the reasons behind Cassandra design decisions. I think this results in a more complete understanding of the subject for the reader. The author does this without getting bogged down or including irrelevant details.Particular attention is paid throughout the book to use cases where the application is deployed as a replacement for, or in operation with, existing non-distributed storage systems. The author methodically works over a number of categories of real-world uses, and works out each example completely. The task of applying these examples is discussed in each case.My favourite aspect of the book is the approach to the use cases: the author begins by discussing the relevant practical application, and then carefully deconstructs it down into a Cassandra setup. He makes sure to mention any obscure 'gotchas' or tweaks to the setup that may be necessary in certain circumstances.

This first edition covers in detail the winning experience I had in 2015 while riding the 100 Mile One Day Race through the Sierra Nevada Mountains. This event known as the Tevis Cup had nearly 200 riders from all over the world most riding their own horses brought from all parts of the world. Top rider in the sport participated and many were past winners as well as riding horses that had won in the past annual event. This annual event from Lake Tahoe to Auburn California was first held in 1955 and is now the most prominent Endurance Ride in the world.

The man is an amazing individual. His health and that of his animals, as well as his land are a priority! I was one of many who kept track of the 2015 Tevis Cup ride via the Internet, rooting him on to victory. His horses love him as much as he loves them and it was a delight to watch him win and now to read this book. If you're a trail/endurance rider, this book is filled with wisdom from a man who's "been there, done that!"May you win many more buckles Potato and complete a Tevis when YOU reach 100!Jan Langlois-Sydnam

By Barb People who read this book are already interested in long distance riding and Potato is the master of the subject. He has such a history with the greats in the endurance game, being one himself. His victories in the Tevis Cup. A hundred mile in a day ride prove his mastery, even at seventy plus years. When I saw the video of Potato jumping off his horse after a hundred miles, my envy of his knees was profound! My only complaint was that the book was too short! He has so much more to share.

I have had the great pleasure to ride with this legend of the sport By Nabil Samaan I have had the great pleasure to ride with this legend of the sport. His book chronicles the day of Tevis and the adventure of Tevis. It is a very enjoyable read. I look forward to riding with Potato and wish him the best in getting his 40 buckles and helping others, like me, seek to get their first buckle!

I read this book to my children and I couldn't help to start crying in front of them. It is a great way to start a serious conversation with children about some horrible realities that happen in our world. My children didn't cry, but they asked a lot of questions.

DON'T LOOK AWAY!!! I got your attention didn't I? Anyways, hey everyone, my name is Minecraft Bob and this is the first entry to my diary. From now on, I've decided to log my daily adventures into a journal so that one day I can look back on it and reminisce on the good old times. I also would really like to share my stories with others - (ahem...whoever is reading this description). This diary will be like none other that you have read - I'm a pretty wild person. Sometimes I do erratic things. But one thing I can assure you: You won't be bored! My first diary entry is about a time when I was hauled to prison out of the blue. The experience was a dramatic life changer for me. One day I was living the average everyday life, but suddenly I found myself in a maximum security prison. The circumstance was not ordinary - I did not know why I ended up in prison, and worst of all there was this warden whom made life a misery. Want to find out more? You'll have to download this diary! Whether you are Minecraft fan or an avid fiction reader, check out this diary! Thanks in advance, Minecraft Bob

I picked this book up because one of my friends is huge into Minecraft, and I wanted to learn more about it. I had no clue about Minecraft before this, so this book was recommended to me as something that could whet my Minecraft whistle, but not get me totally confused about the intricacies. This story was completely enjoyable, and not confusing to an outsider at all – in fact, many times during reading it, it just seemed to me (again, I’m an outsider) that I was reading any thriller. The book was informative in the same sense as it was funny. I found myself laughing out loud many times at the comments by one or more of the characters. A great read! I am hoping the author puts out more of these stories, so I can keep up with Minecraft Bob and his cohorts!

This book had Amazing Quality By Amazon Customer My first impression of this book when I saw it was that it was like the other diaries written by other people. Like they just rushed to make it. But, once I got into it, I realized that this book was SO amazing, that I had to write a review even, if it is my first one. First off, the plot was complete and was great! The narration made you feel like you were in that scene. Sencond of all, the pictures gave you a good visual in your head. These picture add on to the understanding of the book. Lastly, there was action, (suspence) and humor. In overall, I would recommend this to anyone!

I would read literally anything related to Minecraft. The book was written in an interesting way by the author. I liked the story. It had one kind of suspense in it throughout the whole time. Though, the book does not have many graphical images, still, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It kept me on my nerves the whole time. I have also read many prison break stories and still I would call it a brilliant one.I would love to read more of this type of stories.

From New York Times bestselling author Rachel Vincent comes a richly imagined, provocative new series set in the dark mythology of the Menagerie…

When Delilah Marlow visits a famous traveling carnival, Metzger's Menagerie, she is an ordinary woman in a not-quite-ordinary world. But under the macabre circus black-top, she discovers a fierce, sharp-clawed creature lurking just beneath her human veneer. Captured and put on exhibition, Delilah is stripped of her worldly possessions, including her own name, as she's forced to "perform" in town after town.

But there is breathtaking beauty behind the seamy and grotesque reality of the carnival. Gallagher, her handler, is as kind as he is cryptic and strong. The other "attractions"—mermaids, minotaurs, gryphons and kelpies—are strange, yes, but they share a bond forged by the brutal realities of captivity. And as Delilah struggles for her freedom, and for her fellow menagerie, she'll discover a strength and a purpose she never knew existed.

Renowned author Rachel Vincent weaves an intoxicating blend of carnival magic and startling humanity in this intricately woven and powerful tale.

Review "Vincent's a pro.... Unputdownable!" -Kirkus Reviews on The Stars Never Rise"Well written, fresh, charming, great voice-Buffy meets Cat People. I loved it, and look forward to much more in the future from this talented author."-New York Times bestselling author Heather Graham"Compelling and edgy, dark and evocative, Stray is a must read! I loved it from beginning to end." -New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter on Stray"This is the kind of book that ups the ante in teen literature. The characters are true to life in a way not often captured by YA authors; Vincent writes dialogue as if she spends her days haunting the hallways of her local high school. The love triangle is fantastic... This plot is driven by more relatable impulses: love, friendship, jealousy."-RT Book Reviews on My Soul to Steal"Vincent does a nice job of balancing all the various species of character...with dollops of humor and enough backstory to keep readers new to the series engaged, without dousing the pace for those already in the know."-Booklist on If I Die"A well-thought-out vision of werecat social structure as well as a heroine who insists on carving her own path, even if it means breaking some of her society's most sacred taboos."-Library Journal on Rogue"Blood Bound offers a little something for everyone: a convincing magical system for urban fantasy fans; for romance readers, a love that time and distance can't break; and a twist-and-turn plot for mystery buffs."-Shelf Awareness on Blood Bound

At only a fourth into the book, I was horrified and disgusted, and very, very disturbed. I was on the verge of putting this one down for good (and I NEVER stop reading a book I start), putting a note on NetGalley explaining my failure to finish, and move on with my life.Obviously that wasn't the outcome with this book. I went one to read another 50%, and called it a night at 75%. I finished up this book on Wednesday at work. I've decided that I absolutely LOVED the second half of the book, but the first half really marred the book overall. So, three stars! This is my first Rachel Vincent novel (adult or YA), and while I didn't completely love it, I'm glad I stuck it out and muscled through this one.Delilah is a seemingly normal woman, with a boring boyfriend and great friends and a loving mom. When Delilah, her boyfriend, and two friends go to Metzger's Menagerie, the carnival of beasts, including a Minotaur, sirens, werewolves, etc. While there, she sees one of the handlers goading one a werewolf girl, and Delilah reacts. By sinking her claws into the handler. Claws? What claws? It turns out, Delilah is one of those creatures, though no one knows what kind. She is bought by Metzger's, and she is stripped of all human rights she used to enjoy. But Delilah starts to get to know the other "attractions" of the carnival, and she finds that she wants to help them, despite not being able to help herself. Delilah may be imprisoned, bruised, abused, but she discovers something about herself that she never knew, and will stop at nothing to get her freedom back and win the freedom of all the others.See my notes below on the first half of the book. It was ROUGH. However, once I got past the things that were disturbing and horrifying - human captivity, forced labor/slavery, sexual harassment, torture, abuse, etc. - I started to get into the story. I feel like a complete psycho for saying "once I got past _______" (i.e. horrible things), but at some point around the 50%, I guess I got desensitized? No, that's not true. At 75%, I was like, okay, things have gotten even more disturbing. But also really intriguing and slightly hopeful! The tone of this book is incredibly dark and hopeless, emphasis on the "hopeless" part for at least two-thirds of the book, maybe three-fourths. While I absolutely hated seeing Delilah tortured and abused the way she was, I have to say, Vincent did an incredible job of writing this tone and showing the brutality of this particular world. I felt just abut as enraged and panicked and filled with despair as Delilah, which shows how well Vincent dug into the character and the story! The world-building is incredible, though as I keep saying, it is disturbing. In this world, humans are afraid of surrogates, human-looking monsters. They're afraid of monsters and creatures in general. Delilah has no rights as whatever she is, not even to her clothes. One of the most disturbing scenes was when she had to strip in front of the handlers. Male handlers who were looking in more than one way - not just to see what she is. She is always chained, so any handler can do whatever he wants with her. You see what I'm saying about disturbing? I have to hand it to Vincent though, she really wrote this well. Disturbing, but the world-building is so exquisitely crafted. The carnival has all the mystique and appeal, but behind the scenes, it is a hopeless and cruel place.Again, the world-building is spot-on. Despite the fact that I struggled with how disturbing things were (see below), I have to say, the world-building was so well done. I couldn't have been so disturbed if the author had toned it down, right?I really like Delilah, so so much. She finds out she isn't human by sinking claws into his head, and then gets arrested, and then stripped, and then sold, and then has to do humiliating things like strip again, eat disgusting meat, live in a teeny tiny cage, hold her bladder for days. One handler takes every opportunity he can to abuse her in some way, and my heart broke every time. This is why I couldn't keep reading - I hated seeing Delilah suffer, her dignity lost, pride on its way. The thing is, Delilah kept struggling. She kept fighting. She never let them break her, though they hurt her over and over. Delilah is determined, even if she knows no way to escape. Her main handler is Gallagher, who was there when she was bought for Metzger's. He isn't cruel and abusive, and he goes out of his way to protect her and not to hurt her. Of course Delilah suspects the worst - how could she not? He wants something from her, right? Gallagher is actually a decent person. When you read this book, stay on his side and cheer him on! I lived for the scenes between him and Delilah. There is nothing romantic going on (yet???), no hints, but they seem to know each other without knowing, understand each other on some level. I love Gallagher and I love his role in this novel. He is critical to this story, don't underestimate him!The tone gets a little more hopeful as we slowly start to know Gallagher and his mind. I can't say too much, but I am happy with the direction of the plot after we finally figure out more and more about Gallagher - and Delilah. The two of them are a great pair, and I felt better about the story, knowing that they were on the same side. The ending is excellent! I am pleased with the ending, even if it ended a bit twisted. Maybe I really am a psychopath. In any case, the ending could have been much worse, so I appreciate that reprieve. I don't think my heart could have taken any more! What I Did Not Like:Clearly I liked a lot of things about this book. But it took me a looooong time to appreciate those things. The world-building? I HATED it initially. This book is disturbing on so many levels. I hated seeing Delilah go from average human to less than dirt. Suddenly, it doesn't matter if she's naked, or cold, or scared, or has a human appearance, or can speak. What matters is that she is a cryptid (creature), and once they figure out what she is, they can start breeding her (oh, yes). This part almost made me sick - but not to worry, this isn't a part of the story for Delilah. This is introduced with another character. There were so many disturbing scenes in this book. I wanted to shred Clyde (a handler) for abusing Delilah. She is always chained, and of course, it's really easy to do things to a person who is chained. Everyone treats Delilah like filth (with the exception of the other cryptids), so they think they can do anything with her. This broke my heart, over and over. You see why I was disturbed? One thing you don't need to worry about is rape, in terms of Delilah. Not ruling it out for other characters. There are mentions of forced breeding and rape, FYI. Also violence. Hence my adult warning at the beginning of the book. It's mostly because of the violence in this book.Still, like I previously said, Vincent did a great job with making this book so incredibly disturbing. But... it hurt. One of the secondary characters, Genni, is the absolute worst off. But if Vincent had made this book lighter on all the torture and abuse and captivity treatment and whatnot, it wouldn't have been as powerful a novel. One thing that I didn't understand was the newspaper articles and snippets, at the beginning of each perspective/chapter (by the way, there are many perspectives, all in third person, except's Delilah's, in first person). I don't know what they contribute to the story. They're about the scare with cryptids and surrogates that occurred years ago, but they don't seem to add to the plot. Perhaps foreshadowing? Or world-building? I'm not sure. I started to skip them after a while. So, once you "get used to" the disturbing stuff, you'll enjoy the story. The faster you can stomach it (and Vincent has it going for more than half the book), the easier the book gets to read. It was NOT an easy read, by any means. *clutches tatters of heart*Would I Recommend It:You know, despite my rating, it does seem like I enjoyed the book, right? I hope I can convince someone to read this one, and not dissuade (although, if you can't handle the disturbing stuff I mentioned above, definitely SKIP this book). I want you all to know my issues with this book, and while they marred the rating and enjoyment for me, I'm glad I picked up this novel. Vincent fans will probably like this one (how would I know, I've never read any of her other novels!), but anyone who doesn't mind dark, sinister, and disturbing fantasy set in a modern-day world will be intrigued and captured by this novel. ADULT BOOK, OKAY?!Rating:3.5 stars -> rounded down to 3 stars. Definitely on the positive end of 3 stars. But I can't give this novel 4 stars, knowing just how much I struggled with it for about half the book, even a little more than that. It is my first Vincent novel and hopefully the sequel will be my next one. Although I am totally scared of the sequel... if it's anything as disturbing as this book, I might need therapy!

Rachel Vincent brings us a new and enchanting series that is bound to be epic beyond all reason! Menagerie is a unique blend of paranormal and contemporary and shows us the darker side of menagerie settings where the participants are nothing more than prisoners. The world here is also unique in that it's aware of the less than human residents hiding throughout. There was an event in the 80s that's touched on for history purposes and basically it results in all these paranormal beings being seen as monsters. Though they look human, none are treated as such. It's almost a blessing, for the paranormal, to be killed because there are far worse punishments than death. Other punishments involve being hunted down like animals in game parks, being used and abused in less than savory environments, or being sold to a menagerie.Delilah has never enjoyed seeing the cryptids, aka the paranormal beings, being abused in the ways that society inflects on them. At one point, she wanted to be a cryptid-vet and help to take care of them, but when she learned that that position involved more torturing and studying then caring, she quickly dropped her studies and resigned herself to being a bank teller. Going to a menagerie for her birthday wasn't the best gift her boyfriend could provide, but since tickets are expensive, she felt obligated to attend with him and her friends. It was at this menagerie when something unthinkable happened and Delilah is exposed as being a cryptid of some kind. We were aware of this prior to the event happening, though only in the vaguest sense of the word. And Delilah was completely unaware of her secret identity, and learning that she isn't quite human was a devastating blow. She loses all rights she had as a human, and her friends and boyfriend completely abandon her. Before long, she becomes the newest attraction in the menagerie where she was in attendance and she sees a different side to the way things are. The handlers who once seemed to care for the cryptids are abusive and cruel. Delilah sees all this brute torture happening around her and is even abused herself, but there's simply nothing that can be done.Delilah's handler, Gallagher, though, is different from the rest. He's a very mysterious sort of guy and I found him to be very intriguing. You almost expect to see a relationship form between him and Delilah a la Stockhom, but yet, it doesn't. I could see something happening farther down the line though. But for this book, there was zero romance involved. But there's definitely the potential for some to happen eventually. We'll just have to see how things go.I've always been a huge fan of Rachel's books and Menagerie was definitely one her most finest! It's far different from her past series, but that's what I found so intriguing about it. The pacing isn't as fast as I would've hoped for, but the slower pace allowed the characters to develop and the we also get a better understanding of our surroundings and the how serious the situation is. So despite a slower paced read, I still found myself enjoying every minute of it!One of the things that did make things a bit more complicated in it was the change of narrator. For the most part we get Delilah's first person point of view, but every now and then, we'd get to see the point of view from another cryptid or handler or occasionally Gallagher. While those were enjoyable, at times I felt the shift was so sudden. True, they were differentiated by chapter markers, but it did cause the occasional slip-up for me in where I stumbled to change tracks and see what this new character was seeing! The ending to this one was all sorts of chaotic! I don't want to give away anything, but it's definitely one of those things where the heroine's plans seem to be moving smoothly and then they all fall apart again and again! So simply put, chaos! I definitely wonder what those final outcomes will result in. Because there several unexpected happenstances that were the proverbial wrench in the plan! Needless to say, I am hooked on this series!! I can't wait to see what Rachel will do next with this new cast of characters! If you're looking for a new read filled incredible characters and a deliciously built world setting that really digs into the nit and gritty of the menagerie scene, then this is the read for you! Menagerie is a darkly, seductive read that will keep you captivated until the very end and left longing for the next installment!Overall Rating 4.5/5 stars

It’s a story quite like no other with its unusual array of interesting and exotic characters. It’s a story that will break your heart, will make you think, and will make you rail against the injustice toward, and inhumane treatment of, the beautiful and terrifying and extraordinary creatures that make up the menagerie.Author Rachel Vincent invites readers into a world that is dark and intriguing, strange and seductive and spellbinding, harsh and heartbreaking, vicious and cruel. And she gives them a glimpse of what life is really like behind the scenes of Metzger’s Menagerie for its reluctant performers. When Delilah Marlow first visited Metzger’s Menagerie she was both captivated and repulsed by what she saw. Years later when the show was back in town she found herself just as drawn to the beasts, the oddities, the spectacle. But an act of cruelty toward one of its young and helpless performers enraged Delilah in a way she hadn’t ever been before, revealing to her, her friends, and everyone who witnessed her transformation that she is not so different from the curiosities in the menagerie they’d come to gawk at.Finding out she was not human and that the life she had planned was no longer possible was devastating. Being taken into captivity and forced to make sense of a power she hadn’t even known she had in order to perform for the menagerie was an absolute nightmare. One without end, unless she could find a way to use her power to escape her captors and flee to a place where she could exist, undetected, and live free from persecution.MENAGERIE isn’t a story for the faint of heart. It doesn’t tread lightly when it reveals the barbaric conditions the captives are forced to endure. It tackles all of its very real and relatable issues head on. It will give readers plenty of food for thought - about human nature, about fear-based actions, about a human’s capacity for cruelty, about what makes someone human. It will give them characters to love, to root for, to sympathize with. It will show them how important that hope, the will to survive, and a fighting spirit can be in the face of heartlessness, insensitivity, oppression, barbarity.Rachel Vincent has proven herself a masterful and inventive writer with this brilliant and heartrending first installment in her new series. MENAGERIE is amazing and wonderful and disturbing and touching and an absolutely riveting and insanely good read.

Complete HOW TO guide for social media fans By Lizzie Jameson This book is truly a BIBLE as it explains in detail all the features of the main social networks. I found this book to be the perfect gift for my father that is just discovering the wonders of the internet. Besides being a "how to" guide, this book tells a little about the history as well as the future of these networks. I read it myself and I must say I found out tones of new stuff (even if I am a daily user of both Facebook and Twitter). For example, I never knew why the "140 characters" limitation on Twitter and the Facebook Ads were never as clear explained as they are in this guide. As for LinkedIn, I love that the difference between the account types is very well stated. I specifically enjoyed the location sharing chapter as I am constantly "checking in". This is a fun and useful feature that can help us discover nearby events, restaurants, pubs etc. I would recommend this guide to anyone who is interested in learning all the new and exciting features that social media networks have to offer.
