"You're awake."

Lying on his side, Fred Adrian became aware of the sensation of movement before knowing where he was. The starched white pillowcase was cool against his cheek. The smell of plastic registered in his brain.

The gentle roll of the bed along a smooth floor, the blink of the lights overhead, the words on the intercom that he couldn't exactly make sense of, they all made him want to go to sleep.

"You were a trouper during the procedure," the same woman's voice said cheerfully.

Then he began to remember. The hospital. He was in for the procedure. He was lying on a hospital gurney. Fred's mind was slow to catch up, but things were starting to make sense. He was in to have a routine colonoscopy.

"I'm nervous about it."

"No reason to be nervous. It's over."

"When do you start?" he asked.

She chuckled. "It's all over. You're done."

He wasn't hearing her right. He wanted to go to sleep. "What time is it?"

"It's ten past eleven," the same voice, pushing the gurney along the corridor, told him.

Eleven. Last time he'd looked at the clock it was a few minutes past eight. He couldn't remember anything after that. He lifted his wrist to check his watch. He wasn't wearing it. Fred held his hand up against the passing lights on the ceiling. They were so bright.

"Easy now. You're still hooked up."

He squinted at the IV hanging from a shiny chrome hook near his head. The tube snaking down from it disappeared and then reappeared before terminating under some tape on the back of his hand. His first time under anesthesia. He'd put off having the colonoscopy for a very long time.

"I made it. It's over," he said to the voice, as if that should be news to her.

"You made it through with flying colors," the woman said in an entertained tone.

She slowed down to negotiate a turn.

"I'll be fifty-nine next week," Fred said to her.

"Happy birthday."

The bed bumped its way through a door. Fred didn't mind. The residual mellowness from the anesthesia was taking the edge off of every sensation. His hand flopped onto the pillow and he slipped it under his head. He looked up at the ceiling. He couldn't quite focus yet.

"I'm the first one of us to reach the age of fifty-nine," he told her.

"The first one?" she asked.

They made it through the door, and the nurse parked him. He wanted to talk, to tell her how special this was. His mind was slow to keep up, though. He didn't know if she'd asked the question now or at eight o'clock this morning. He decided to say it, anyway. He had to share the news.

"I'm the first male in my family…" He chuckled, remembering how nervous he'd been before today. He was sure this would be it. Today, he'd die. "I'm the first one to reach the age of fifty-nine. My father… he was forty-two when he died. Brother…fifty. Now maybe I'll live to be sixty. My daughter is getting married next year… and I'll be sixty."

There were two other patients in the room. Fred looked over. Another bed was rolled in after him. Or maybe he was there before him. He was an old man, sound asleep. Fred was tired. Maybe he should sleep, too.

"You're just starting to wake up, but there's no hurry," she told him. "Do you have someone waiting for you in the reception area?"

For the first time he saw his nurse. She was moving the IV from a hook on the gurney to some stand next to it. She was young, not too pretty. She could be, he thought.

"I need a date for my daughter's wedding," he told her.

"Do you have someone in the waiting area, Mr. Adrian?" she asked again. She wasn't smiling now.

"Yeah… she should be out there."

"She?" The nurse picked up a chart and read something on it before putting it back down. "Why don't you rest, and I'll go and get Mrs. Adrian? But don't try to get up or move until I come back to take out the IV, okay?"

"Rest…" he whispered under his breath. His throat was dry. He wanted something to drink. He stared at the table with rolling wheels beside his bed. There was a cup sitting on top. He wondered if there was something in it to drink. The nurse had said not to move.

The guy next to him was snoring. Fred wondered if he'd been snoring while under anesthesia. He'd made it. Made it.

Five minutes later… or three hours. He didn't know. Fred opened his eyes and saw her coming into the room.

"I made it," he said, yawning and closing his eyes.

"You did," the woman said in a low voice. "Your nurse said as soon as you're awake, they'll bring you some coffee and a piece of toast."

"I'm thirsty. Hand me that cup of water." His hand hung in the air.

He heard a soft plastic-sounding snap near his head. She was standing too close to the bed. Fred could smell her perfume. He opened his eyes and saw her take something out of the tube going into his arm.

"What was that?" he asked.

Her hand moved to his forehead and she covered his eyes. "Why don't you get some rest until it's time to take you home?"

The other patient was still snoring. He didn't want to sleep. Fred felt his limbs getting heavy.

"Take me home… I can sleep there."

"Shh…soon."

His heartbeat started drumming in his ears. Suddenly, he didn't feel right. There was something different. The right side of his face felt numb, like he'd been slapped.

"Is he ready for coffee?" Fred heard the familiar voice of the nurse coming back into the room.

Coffee…yes. He wanted to wake up. He wanted to get out of here. He wanted to answer for himself. His tongue felt swollen in his mouth. His eyelids were too heavy to lift. He opened his mouth but he could push no sound out.

Something wasn't right. She'd put something in the tube in his arm.

Then, in a moment of clarity, he thought of Cynthia, and the box he'd shipped his daughter.

"I think he's fallen back to sleep. Should we give him some time?"

"That's fine. Come and get me when he's awake."

No. He wanted to wake up now. He wanted to live. He'd be fifty-nine next week. He needed to walk his daughter down the aisle at her wedding. Fred lifted his hand off the bed to tell the nurse to stop, but cold fingers took hold of his and pressed them down into the sheet.

The kick of his foot at the table was a feeble effort, at best. Like a last gasp for air before drowning.

"Is he okay?" he heard the nurse's voice from far away.

"Yes, he's fine. I'm the klutz. I just leaned against the table."

Vaguely, he heard the sound of footsteps moving into the distance. Hope slipped away like a lifeline through his fingers and was gone.

New Mexico Nuclear Fusion Test Facility

More than halfway home.

Even at forty-eight days into the project, Marion Kagan didn't mind working seven days a week, sixteen hours a day. She didn't have time to think about sun and clouds and trees. Sometimes, lying in her bunk, she did have to shake from her mind how much she missed the sting of the wind on her face as she whipped along on her scooter back and forth from her apartment to the UC Davis campus. Down here, there was no sunrise, no sunset. But no commuter traffic, either.

Buried in the underground research facility with eight other scientists, Marion only considered the passage of day and night when she made her journal entry at the end of a shift. The group worked in shifts around the clock. Eating and sleeping happened between shifts, and everyone reported for duty when it was time.

She was fine with all of this. They were over the hump. Only forty-two days left. And anytime she got too restless, she simply reminded herself what a boost it was in her curriculum vitae to be the only graduate assistant chosen for this highly selective project. A project that was already producing groundbreaking results. In the scientific world, the eight academics in her group were already stars; this project would make them superstars. As for Marion, after this she didn't believe she'd have any difficulty finding a job once she had her Ph.D.

Everything was great except for one thing. She just couldn't get used to the ongoing surveillance. The cameras were everywhere, mounted in the hallways, the laboratories, the control room. Marion couldn't see them in the bunk room or the bathroom she shared with Eileen Arrington, the only other female researcher on the team, but that didn't mean that they weren't there.

Truth be told, the cameras made her self-conscious. They recorded everything. Of course, the only camera with a live feed to the world above was by the elevator. Connected to the security station on the ground floor, that hookup provided a quick way to communicate with the outside world in case of emergency.

The rest of the cameras were for documentation, she'd been told. It eliminated a lot of the paperwork that otherwise Marion would have to do. That thought helped to make the surveillance bearable, at least. It had taken only a couple of hours on the first day of the project for her to realize that, as the only member of the team lacking a doctoral degree, she was expected to be servant, gofer, slave, chief cook, dishwasher and, of course, lab assistant for the other eight making up the team.

Marion made a face at the camera in the hallway before punching in the security code on a pad to get into the control room. Hearing the click of the lock, she pulled open the door.

Five of the researchers were already in there, gathered around a rectangular conference table in the center of the room for the morning update. Dozens of computer screens and accompanying electronic apparatuses were scattered around the spacious room. This was the place where most of them spent the day. They worked in overlapping shifts, but each had their own workstation. At any given time, six researchers were on duty and three were off. Glancing around the room, she realized she never ceased to be amazed at the way the personal peculiarities of each individual were so clearly demonstrated by the condition of their personal work space.

Robert Eaton, the project manager, stopped what he was saying and looked up at Marion.

She nodded. "The nine containers are in the test fixtures and set to go," she told hi...

The author does a very good job of creating the suspense from the very beginning and you actually have to read several chapters before it all begins to come together. After reading this book, I now have a new author that has managed to peak my interest and immediately went to the local library to see if I could find other books by this author. Get it and you won't be able to stop reading it.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. intense thriller By A Customer At the underground New Mexico Fusion Test Facility, scientist Marion Kagan looks forward to sunlight in forty-two days though she does not mind working seven days sixteen hours a day on the project. They are attacked by gunmen who kill everyone inside the edifice except for Marian who they shoot in the head and thought her dead too. The building collapses amidst flame and debris. The outside world assumes everyone inside is dead while radioactive material could soon leak out killing millions. In Connecticut at the Waterbury Long Term care facility, a JD patient who has been in a minimally conscious state for six years since the car accident begins to violently move. Using an experimental program to understand what disturbs her leads them to Pennsylvania ex-cop Mark Shaw, who's just returned from a stint in Iraq. Mark recognizes the link between Jane Doe and Marion but now believes the scientist may be alive in that rubble in New Mexico while Dr. Ahmad Baer brings in a specialist to try to bring JD totally alive. This intense thriller will hook the audience as the action moves back and forth between New Mexico to Connecticut with a few other stops in between. The story line is fast-paced from the opening assault and never slows down for a breather. The key to this tense thriller is the romantic subplot though it takes a back seat to the non-stop action. Jan Coffey has a winner with this strong tale.Harriet Klausner

Router: The Tool Information You Need at Your Fingertips (Missing Shop Manual), by Skills Institute Press

Review The Router book is as essential in the woodshop as the router itself. There have been a plethora of router books on the market and even if you have them all, this one is a must have. The book covers just about all there is to know about the tool including a whole bunch of shop-made router jigs. This is the seventh book in the Missing Shop Manual series, written for novice woodworkers. At just over 200 pages, the Router book is one of the most comprehensive in the series. It shares the same format as the other books - each topic is presented in a few pages, generally with half a page taken up by descriptive text and the other half with a photo or illustration. The text is sparse, to the point, and clearly written. The illustrations are meant to amplify the text, and in general they are well done. This book covers most of the topics you would want to know when you first purchase a router. You get a basic outline of the components of a fixed and plunge router, an introduction to the three basic families of router bits (edge forming, grooving, panel raising), and then, instruction on using the router for a wide range of routing tasks. The authors refer to quite a few jigs and accessories (sub bases, router tables, surfacing and flush trimming jigs, and the like), though you won't find much in the way of detailed plans on how to make them. Fortunately many of the jigs are fairly easy to assemble. In a book like this there are bound to be topics missing, or inadequately covered. I felt that there wasn't a very clear discussion of the specific router features that are important for specific routing tasks. There is no mention of trim routers or combination routers. The authors don't outline the difference between carbide and high speed steel router bits, or make any mention of insert router bits. There is no mention of climb cutting, and surprisingly, no clear instructions on determining the direction of feed when routing. Still, if you've recently purchased a router, you'll find that there is certainly much more information in this book than the instruction manual that came with your router. And that, really, is the purpose of the Missing Shop Manual series.I love woodworking. I'm not great at it - I figure it'll take me another 15+ years to hit that magic 10,000 hour mark in the shop to reach an expert's level of craftsmanship. But in the meantime, I try to always have something going on in the shop that either allows me to learn a new skill or get a bit more practice with an older one. Right now, I'm enjoying learning how to properly use my router table. I know how to use a router as a stand-alone device, but the table is going to allow me to branch out and really do some interesting stuff. But mounting the router underneath the table brought with it some questions that required me to dig out the router manual a big white heap of pages that answered my question but not with a lot of enjoyment. I've done this in the past, breaking out my stack of manuals to remind myself how to tune my table saw or replace the blade correctly in my band saw. The operator manuals that come with tools are definitely useful, but they have one glaringly obvious drawback - the manual will tell you how to properly and safely operate a tool, but it won't tell you how to really use it. You won't get the advice that a pro can offer when you're first getting your feet wet with a new tool (well, unless you have access to a few pros). This is exactly the situation I found myself in when I first purchased my circular saw, my table saw, my band saw, and my router. I tell you all this so you'll understand (and not poke too much fun at me) why I grabbed the box from the UPS guy and beat a path to my man cave to tear into the care package sent to me from Fox Chapel Publishing. They've got books on a lot of different subjects from Mennonite Cookbooks to Sewing to Winemaking to Woodburning. But it's their woodworking titles that make me drool, with subjects ranging from furniture making to pinewood derby cars. Tucked in the box were ten little books I've been itching to read and review, and I've just completed the entire set after just a little over a week. If that sounds like a lot of reading in a short time, rest assured that these ten little books are short, easy to read, and sure to be of interest to anyone who has stared at a power tool and wondered how to operate it, how to maintain it, and ultimately how best to use it. The series is called The Missing Shop Manual, and while I certainly hope the library continues to grow, you'll likely find at least one of the books that matches a tool in your shop maybe more. The series claims you'll wish this was the manual that originally came with your insert-tool-name-here. I can't speak for all ten books as I've not yet got a jointer, shaper, or lathe (my wife is grimacing right now as she realizes I don't yet have all the tools I really want), but I can tell you that the claim holds true for my band saw (2-page manual, I kid you not), my router (a bit better manual, but no actual usage examples), and my drill press (a little better with a 3-page manual but half of it was warnings and troubleshooting steps). I'll go ahead and say it - I wasn't really certain how much these little books (most of them averaging less than 150 pages) were going to really help me when I started reading. But after completing the Router and Table Saw books, I couldn't stop smiling. I had already picked up on some of the advice in these books, but there was new stuff in there (to me). Stuff I know I would likely never have figured out without someone with experience telling me. But since I typically work alone and am of the I'll-figure-it-out-on-my-own mentality, I tend to make mistakes often. That's how I learn, I guess. But let's take the Band Saw book, for example. I thought using a band saw was pretty straight forward. I knew how to operate it, how to tighten the blade, and how to do a few tricky cuts. But I never thought to check the blade wheel alignment. I guess the manufacturer just figured it would be perfect from the factory. (Wrong.) This little book even showed me how to test for (and fix) an out-of-round blade wheel. There was zero mention of this in the manufacturer's manual fortunately my blade wheels were round but the alignment was a bit off. I fixed it per the book's instructions and did a test cut on a piece of hardwood that had been giving me trouble. Immediate improvement that I could tell just by feel. I can go on with more examples. The Circular Saws and Jig Saws book (two tools in one book) gave me a much better understanding of two of the tools I use most in my shop. Again, I thought I knew all there was to using these tools, but the little manual proved otherwise by offering me some tips on how to make specific types of cuts with these (at times) not so accurate cutting tools, especially the jig saw. The Table Saw book I read twice. I honestly could not believe how little I knew about the maintenance and operation of one of the most expensive tools in my shop. I mean, seriously - how hard would it be for tool manufacturers to provide some DVDs and mini-projects to help us learn how to use our new tools better? Thankfully, it's never too late to learn and I can point to the Table Saw book as a prime example of where The Missing Shop Manual is a worthy investment. I started reading the Glue and Clamps book as I was waiting for my wife to get ready to go shopping - she gave me the funniest look when I put a bookmark in and took it with me. Yes, I actually enjoyed reading about gluing and clamping techniques while sitting and waiting for her to finish her shopping. I even had one guy pass by me, give me a strange look, and then ask me if the book was any good! I've never done any drawer assembly, but now I know what to buy (and why) should I ever try to put together a box. All of the books contain a mixture of color photographs and color line drawings to demonstrate techniques or concepts. They're also, as I said earlier, short and sweet. You can typically read an entire book in less than 45 minutes or, in the case of the Jointer book's 77 pages, about 20 minutes. The books range in price from $9.95 to $12.95, with the exception being the Bench Planes book that comes with a 55-minute DVD showing techniques and proper usage. After reading all ten books, I'm thinking I'd really like a lathe. The Lathe book was fun to read, even though I don't own one. I know what's involved (to a point), so it was interesting to read a detailed overview of how the tool works, how the various cutting tools are used, and some of the interesting things I can do with it. The Missing Shop Manual series is well done. Most of us who enjoy woodworking are not professional woodworkers, so it's nice to have little books like this available to help refresh our memory on operation, cleaning, tuning, and proper usage. I know I'm guilty of getting lazy here and there and operating a tool improperly, so I think I'm going to make myself a promise to review these books once a year to keep me on my toes and keep my tools in proper working order. Take a look at your own tools and find the one that gives you the most trouble or the one that you tend to take for granted that you know everything there is to know about it. Pick up a copy of the matching Missing Shop Manual and give it a read - I'll be curious to know what you think. The ten books in the series include: Jointer Lathe Shaper Glue and Clamps Band Saw Circular Saws and Jig Saws Router Table Saw Drills and Drill Presses Bench Planes

Although I've not read it from cover to cover yet, I must say it is most informative and very helpful for a 1st timer. Within the first couple chapters I have already seen many helpful hints/suggestions that are not in the owner's documentation. There are many good quality full color pictures to help you understand what the text has said. This will likely be in my "shop" rather than the owner's book. I now see there are several other similar books in this library by the same publishers. I expect that I will purchase a couple of those too.

This gave us an excellent resource for understanding and taking care of our router, which of course means we are using it much more productively. We are going to get this series on a couple of other tools. Well worth the money in our opinion.

But we always ask ourselves when we need a new application "shall we try to build this in Sharepoint, or shall we buy new software?"With De Weerd's book we were able to see which answers Sharepoint gives to our archiving demands. He dows not tell "You've got Sharepoint so you should use it", but starting from our demands he shows in which respects Sharepoint can be helpful.

Whereas many SharePoint books are massive and try to cover every aspect of a SharePoint user's tasks, this book is very focused on practical, day-to-day activities. It's great for those new to the Records Center, and I still found myself consulting it for advice several weeks into my training.

However, this was poorly edited and I had to work hard to get past the improper use of language and grammar. He's intelligent but needs to hone the writing skills (as do I).

It can be a big help in getting ready in starting on a journey to living an environmentally friendly and financially free lifestyle within a limited space. There are even house plans that one can choose from. I found this book very informative and very detailed. Imagine living in a tiny house and downgrading your usual life in order to be a little bit financially free. This is going to be a great experience. What I appreciate most in this book is that it has given different situations and the possible questions that one needs to ask himself before actually venturing into living in a tiny house. This is good for evaluating how ready one can be. This has been a learning reading experience.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Interesting book about fascinating houses By Sanjin I have a feeling that tiny houses are everywhere these days – the TV shows, the Internet, articles, Pinterest… That is definitely a modern way to live and I can see why. This book is excellent, it isn't just an advertisement that says "go live in a small house, it's great!". The author explains the good and not so good things about having a tiny house and I really liked the floor plans he gives, that is the best part of the book. You can really see how to fit everything in a small space and that is great for any kind of house, not just the tiny one. This is a great book, check it out. Maybe you will get the urge to change your living arrangements, who knows.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. One of her best; especially good for well-read bookish types By A Customer I love all of E. Nesbit's books; they are some of my dearest childhood favorites. I also really like the Enchanted Castle, The Magic City, and The Story of the Amulet. Wet Magic is more poetic and literate; there seems to be more visual beauty, and I love the scene where the book characters are literally coaxed out of all their books to help with the battle.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Excellent, but want more details. By A Customer This is a great book for any young reader, especially those interested in fantasy and mythology, although some parts are much different than the "tradional" view of merfolk in general (such as removable tails), but the story was good. What I noticed first was the ommission of various details, such as how they suddenly learn of the mermaid's name or leaving out details in the battles towards the end. I did find, however, that the narrator does a good job of telling the tale, like a mother would tell it to her daughter. All in all, a good story with a little action and lots of magical adventure.

By avidreader As all Nesbit - magical magic and wonderfully real children to enjoy it in the story. Could NOT give fewer than 5 stars even though the weird quote marks make the dialogue hard to read. If the editor/publisher sees this- PLEASE fix this format problem..."quote marks are supposed to look like this" not how they appear in this edition.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Quick & fun read, a trip down memory lane! By GenuineJenn I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. If you remember the Atari 2600 game system then this will bring you down memory lane, this is a quick read that is just perfect for the fall/Halloween time. It is about friendship, adventure and games! Andy, Teddy and Carl need to get their hands on the Atari 2600 system but can't get their parents to buy one. Andy has the perfect way to get a hold of some money to buy the Atari and all the games out if the boys can get to his Great Aunt's house, who just passed away and hated banks, so rumor has it she has money stashed all over the farmhouse. Only problem is they need to find the hidden loot before any of his cousins get their hands on it. The three boys head out on the bus to the old farmhouse and have quite the adventure to obtain some loot and miss out on all the candy loot from Halloween.I look forward to reading more from Chris Keane as I fully believe this would have been a great full length novel. I give it a 4 out of 5 stars.

Definitely Goonies-style, so if you're a fan of the old 80's flick or if you grew up in the 70's or early 80's, then you'll probably enjoy this book. Tons of references to circa 1980 candy, toys, household items, etc. Took me back. The story itself was good, kept me reading and I especially enjoyed the characters. It would be nice to see more adventures with these guys! Some errors which influenced my rating a bit, but overall an easy, fun read that I would recommend to anyone. (YA or adult)

A quick read that packs a punch By Piper This was an engaging, nostalgic coming of age tale set in 1977 about three boys who go "treasure hunting" in a deceased aunt's farmhouse so they can buy the treasured Atari. Along the way, the main character, Andy, comes to terms with unexpected feelings regarding his aunt's death. The writer is gifted with putting the readers right in the atmosphere of the time and place the story is set. The characters are well defined in a concise way through their dialog and actions. It's a quick read that packs a punch.
