Evil doesn't become extinct; it evolves. Our world is a violent place. Murder, terrorism, racism, and social inequality are some of the forces that attempt to destroy our society while the state is forced to increase its response to these actions. Our own annihilation is barely held at bay by the belief that we've somehow evolved beyond our ancestors' base desires.

From this cesspool of emotions emerges a madman, intent on leading the world into anarchy. When his group of computer hackers infiltrate the Department of Defense network, they initiate a nuclear war that will irrevocably alter our world.

Aeric Gaines and his roommate, Tyler Nordgren, survive the devastation of the war, only to find that the quaint, politically correct world where they'd been raised was a lie. All humans have basic needs such as food, water, and shelter...and we haven't forgotten how to fight for what we desire.

A Path of Ashes is the first book in an exciting new series about life in post-apocalyptic America, a nation devoid of leadership, electricity, and human rights. The world as we know it may have burned, but humanity found a way to survive and this is their story.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. If you're interested in plausible apocalyptic scenarios, then Brian Parker's, "A Path of Ashes" is the book for you. By Lee H. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I couldn't put it down and finished it in two days. Parker's military background, and detailed research, come together to bring a frighteningly plausible scenario.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Before I knew it, I was hooked By Bibliophile Brian Parker has a way of bringing you into the story without you realizing it. At the beginning I followed along, unsure where we were going but willing to give this story a shot. Before I realized what had happened, the world as I knew it had imploded on itself and here we were, Aeric, Tyler, and me, with no working knowledge of what to do to survive, let alone any previous thought on how to get from Point A to Point B.By the time the story ended, well, I was turning the pages of the sneak peek at the next in the series. I've thoroughly enjoyed my travels with these characters... except for one point, when I was invested enough to keep reading because I wanted to know how they got through it but it was uncomfortable for me to read it because of the situation they'd found themselves in... but then, this IS a dystopian land.I'm certainly looking forward to reading more by this author. Thank you for entertaining me!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Very plausible...Very real... By Sandra B I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can't wait for the next one. Not only has the author captured his readers with a great story of Aeric and Tyler and the other cast of characters but he also teases you with the history of Aeric, told by his grandfather. I would probably get book two just to hear grandpa tell his story!!! Anyways, the pain, suffering and torture is very descriptive and you can almost feel it happening. The author knows how to tell it and keeps you wanting more. Great book!!

O'Reilly books (and many web sources) provide better coverage and implementation details for a wider set of languages/libraries/VMs (this focuses on .Net's which is not without its quirks -- as are they all) but this more than suffices as a beginner book. As a cookbook its examples are simple but easy to follow, again consistent with a beginner audience.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I enjoy reading P By grace I enjoy reading P. W. Child's work. However, this book, especially considering the expectations stemming from the title, was disappointing. The only parts of the book that related to the title were the epilogue (still a stretch, even), when Nina saw some scrolls mentioning Atlantis, and when the group launched an effort to locate it . The majority of the book was spent deciphering some journal that didn't really have anything to do with the story at all.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. beautiful storyline, had me hooked on the first pages. By Daria Krylova I grew up completed consumed with the Atlantis mythical stories and I love fiction tales that cover the theme of Atlantis. This book was so enjoyable because the plot line is easy to follow, well written and gives a wonderful sense into the true essence of it's characters. The elements of fantasy and action are tied well and I think I will enjoy reading more books by this author. Fun read. I'd definitely recommend it to friends.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Series continues to unfold with good books. By Doc This is the seventh book in the series and continues the adventures of Sam, Nina and Purdue. This is the slowest paced book so far and ends without finishing the book's plot. A serious no no. I like this author, but wonder if he hurried getting the last two books out. Haste does make waste, so slow down Preston. The characters continue to b sharply drawn and the action believable. Just not his best effort.

Dawn breaks over Vancouver and no one in the world has slept the night before, or almost no one. A few people, perhaps one in ten thousand, can still sleep, and they’ve all shared the same golden dream. After six days of absolute sleep deprivation, psychosis will set in. After four weeks, the body will die. In the interim, panic ensues and a bizarre new world arises in which those previously on the fringes of society take the lead. Paul, a writer, continues to sleep while his partner Tanya disintegrates before his eyes, and the new world swallows the old one whole.

Nod, by Adrian Barnes

Review  “Violent, frightening, textured, and dystopian are words that aptly describe the short-lived world that Barnes has created. Barnes’ writing is beautiful” - Quest For Sleep“Barnes’s prose is full of surprising figures and flourishes” - Kenyon"I loved the premise and enjoyed both the story and Barnes’s rich prose." - Craig DiLouie “Thought provoking and utterly engrossing, NOD is a science fiction tale of horror unlike any I have read before.” - Count Gore“The creepiest book of the year” - Slate“I could see what the new world of Nod looked like, could easily picture the slow collapse of Vancouver and its people thanks to Barnes’ close attention to detail. At times I could even smell the death and decay it so vividly described.” - Project Fandom"Debut author Barnes has written a completely original twist on the subject of insomnia. His apocalyptic thriller will appeal to fans of Christopher Galt’s Biblical and other dystopian and sf thrillers as well as readers with an interest in mythology" - Library Journal“I have never read anything quite like this book. It’s the perfect blend of heady existentialism and dystopian nightmare. The grand scope of the many ideas and themes, including anti-establishment, anti-consumerism, and the very nature of good and evil, is balanced out by fast-paced events that play on a micro-level...Nod is horror born of the unflinching and uncompromising detail that dissects what it means to be human.” - Dread Central"Nod brings a refreshing perspective to the horror/zombie genre." - Pop Kernal"Graphically violent, but gleaming with gems of sardonic prose and clever phrases, this is a book I would read again just for the writing." - St. Louis Post-Dispatch

About the Author Adrian Barnes was born in Blackpool, England but moved to Canada in 1969. He teaches English at Selkirk College, British Columbia. He is married with two children. He received an MA in Creative Writing from Manchester Metropolitan University and Nod is his first published novel.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Nod is great! By Kathleen Moore This is a fast read- as in: I couldn't put it down. Best to read in the daylight hours so as not to impact your own sleep! Barnes writes with wit and imagination about a very, very weird world that I hope we never experience. Fascinating premise and well done.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Deep By buttonfly A thoughtful book with beautiful language, wrapped up in a fairly fun read. A little bit love story, a little bit horror, a lot of make-you-think moments. I've already recommended this book to three friends.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. and how some "awakened" managed to cope a lot better than others By B. Cherry This book asks the question: what happens if (nearly) all of the world's population lost the ability to sleep, or, for that matter, doesn't appear to even be tired? It explores this nightmare through the first person narrator's journal as he tries to survive in a world where society, day by day, breaks down. It's exactly what you'd expect, as the population, their brains rubbed raw with mental exhaustion and dispair, act out their individual coping mechanisms (hint: it ain't pretty). The only issues I have is that it ends without any explanation of why "sleepers" share certain characteristics, and how some "awakened" managed to cope a lot better than others...for a while. Granted, the narrator is writing the experiences in his journal, but any thoughts or discoveries on this particular matter would have been refreshing, and some conclusion on the state of the world would be a delicious topic of discussion in book clubs. Either way it was a GREAT and interesting book with an original idea, and a LOT of fun to read. I know authors watch Amazon reviews so I am going to take this review to say: Mr. Barnes, I can't wait to read what you (pardon the pun) dream up next!

From the author of Into the Forest, a moving novel about memory, Shakespeare's green worlds, and the power of reconciliation.Until John Wilson met the warm, wise woman who became his fourth wife, the object of his most intense devotion had always been the work of William Shakespeare. From his feat of memorizing Romeo and Juliet and half a dozen other plays as a student to his evangelical zeal as a professor, John’s faith in the Bard has shaped his life. But now his mental powers have been diminished by dementia, and his wife has reluctantly moved him to a residential care facility. Even there, as he struggles to understand what’s going on around him, John's knowledge of the plays helps him make sense of his fractured world.Yet, when his only child, Miranda—with whom he has not spoken since a devastating misunderstanding a decade ago—comes to visit, John begins to question some of his deepest convictions. In his devotion to Shakespeare, did he lose his way? Did he wrong the child who wronged him? The story of an imperfect father and a wounded daughter's efforts to achieve some authentic connection even now, Still Time celebrates redemption and the gift of second chances. It is that rare novel that ends on a resounding note of hope, reminding us that there is always time to live fully and love deeply, so long as we are alive.Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade, Yucca, and Good Books imprints, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction—novels, novellas, political and medical thrillers, comedy, satire, historical fiction, romance, erotic and love stories, mystery, classic literature, folklore and mythology, literary classics including Shakespeare, Dumas, Wilde, Cather, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Still Time: A Novel, by Jean Hegland

Review “The wonderful Jean Hegland returns with a moving, beautiful story about what persists and what doesn't, about what can be repaired and what can't. This is a tale focused and personal, but also large and philosophical; and all of it infused with and guided by the great Shakespeare. Men are men; the best sometimes forget.”—Karen Joy Fowler, author of We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves“Anyone who knows only fragments of Shakespeare will be fascinated and deeply moved by this insightful story of a Shakespeare scholar experiencing dementia. Fellow Shakespeareans will delight in the way the myriad allusions to the plays are intertwined with beautifully crafted elegiac descriptions of the old man's life in a home and his dissolving family memories. Still Time is a novel Shakespeare would be proud of.” —David Crystal, author of The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Language and Shakespeare's Words“The tone of Still Time is deceptively quiet. Why then did I read it with heart-pounding excitement? Because it is, from start to finish, a high-wire act of literary daring. Only a master could bring off this feat. Jean Hegland brings it off.” —Rebecca Goldstein, author of Plato at the Googleplex“This book is for anyone who appreciates a beautifully written, character-driven story . . . Heartbreaking in the best possible way.” —Booklist, starred review"Just as Into the Forest, Jean Hegland haunts yet again in Still Time, a highly evocative read, managing to strike with pinpoint accuracy at several raw emotions. It’s also a wonderfully intelligent read and Jean [Hegland] deftly weaves in characters and prose from Shakespeare’s greatest, expertly creating connections between these references and John’s deteriorating thoughts. Absolutely recommended." —Portsmouth Review

Review An absolutely riveting read from beginning to end, "Still Time" clearly documents author Jean Hegland as a superb novelist whose deftly crafted characters and thoroughly absorbing story make this one of those all to rare novels that will linger in the mind and memory long after the book itself has been finished and set back upon the shelf. "Still Time" is very highly recommended for both community and academic library Literary Fiction collections. For personal reading lists it should be noted that "Still Time" is also available in a Kindle edition ($13.99). -Mary Cowper

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Masterful novel that will touch your heart By Marjorie Cunningham This is a very moving story about a Shakespeare scholar who has recently moved to a nursing home due to Alzheimer’s. Your heart will break as you witness his struggle to deal with the failure of language, memory and thought process. This is a man who memorized whole Shakespeare plays and now doesn’t know where he is or what day it is. At times, he leaves the strange and unfamiliar world of the nursing home behind as he travels in his mind to events of his past and loses himself in the stories written by Shakespeare. Other times, he’ll catch a glimpse of the past but will then lose the thread of thought and memory. The novel also explores his estranged relationship with his daughter, Miranda. A misunderstanding of many years ago still stands between them and the question throughout the book is whether there’s still time for them to make things right again. The book really brought home the truth of how finite our time on earth is.I loved the way the author included parts of Shakespeare throughout the story. John is so entrenched in his life-long study of Shakespeare that he speaks as though he were in a Shakespeare play and he compares all that has happened to him in his life to those stories of long ago. The story shows the importance of literature in our lives and how it anchors us more firmly to the world around us.It’s a slow moving book, yet I couldn’t tear myself away from it and was glued to its pages. The author is a master at bringing her characters to life and so realistically portraying their thoughts. It’s a heart wrenching book and it touched me deeply. This is the first book I’ve read by Jean Hegland but it certainly won’t be the last. This book was given to me by the publisher through Edelweiss in return for an honest review.

Don't be put off: it's not just a story about Alzheimer's By Samuel Geller If, like me, you have an aversion to disease stories (usually they are uplifting cancer stories), or you have family members with Alzheimer's and can't stomach reading a novel about it, don't be put off. "Still Time" is not ABOUT the disease, or, I should say it transcends the disease that afflicts its main character. Rather, it's a book about memory and redemption, and, not least, the power of Shakespeare's art to inform a 21st century life. I read it because I loved Hegland's "Windfalls" and "Into the Forest." Here you find the same lush prose, careful craftsmanship, and another story about family relationships--here, one between father and daughter. But what I enjoyed most about "Still Time" was the book's intellectual story, which is beautifully woven into its emotional one. As a casual but uninformed theater goer who has enjoyed Shakespearean theater, I suddenly wanted to sit down and carefully read King Lear and Winter's Tale and the rest of the so-called romances that, I learned, were written late in Shakespeare's career, and I can't wait for the chance to go to a Shakespeare festival. Hegland doesn't retell the plays, like Jane Smiley does in "A Thousand Acres." Instead, her character uses them to make sense of a life, just when he loses the capacity to make sense of the more mundane activities of daily living

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Or IS there? By Cat Shannon John is losing his mind. Or is he gaining insight into his past? This novel picks you up and drops you into a world most of us fear. Yet does it in such a way as to be entertaining, heartwarming, frustrating and wondrous, just as living serves us all. The beauty lies in his ability to fall back on his long love of Shakespeare although, all the studying, reading and teaching those tragedy/comedies have nothing on the final answers his quest to understand will bring. No one knows for sure what goes on in the mind of those who have lost all sense of time and current events, but Hegland makes if feels right. The ups and downs of memory loss are a maddening affair. Full of things unspoken, promises broken and love’s small tokens. I was hooked from the beginning and did not guess the ending. A wonderful tale to behold. I would recommend it to all as it surely expanded my attempts to understand from the inside. The characters are richly detailed and I was never as lost as John. I need to call all my family and tell them I love them. Right Now!A preview book was supplied free for an honest review.

Mudge III It's not just the tips that made sure I kept a copy of this book around, but also the way they're presented: In practical terms, with examples of where features are useful that are applicable to most developers. Of course it introduces the basics, but I suspect that aspect of the book isn't that interesting for most people buying it (almost nobody is required to use Vim!), it's mostly in tying it all together that this book excels. It will take you from a moderate to intermediate Vim user to a fluent Vim user if you follow its guidance and practice. However, it is unlikely that an advanced Vim user will find anything surprising in here. I keep this around for introducing others to vim or helping existing vim-ers gain skill; I rarely need it myself. It's got a target audience, and it's exquisitely tailored to them.

I learned some new things, even as a longtime Vim user By Patrick Regan I've long been a user of Vim, and was originally skeptical I would learn much from this book. I purchased this book, as I've consumed a lot of the author's free content at[...]and wanted to support the author. I was pleasantly surprised to see that I was able to learn a few things pretty quickly after opening the book. It's well written and easy to understand, and has plenty of content for the novice and advanced user alike. The book is written as a series of tips collected into themes. Each tip gets more advanced within each group of tips.Whether you are just starting out, or a long time user, this book is a great way to get that extra bit out of Vim.

By Hugo This book is simply awesome, for me is the best source to learn Cocos2d-x development in general and to make a top class game.Starting from the most basic concepts of the game engine, teaching how to use the engine features and how to go more deeply creating your own features based on your needs, using the base that Cocos2d-x have. This book is structured, you have good basis to make all kind of games, you will have one “how-to-do” to almost everything you may need to make your games, I liked because he teaches why he does and how, this way you don't have just a recipe, you have the basis to do much more.He shows how to use advanced techniques to make your games run in more professional style, using hardware communication on Android and iOS, this is very important and you don't find much information about, and he teaches from the basics, and you will feel comfortable to do what you need to do, using the specific platform capabilities. This book covers Physics, SQLite, Tiled Maps, Networking and much more, all the things you may need to make AAA cross-platform games. The author focus on iOS and Android, but you can use for all Cocos2d-x supported platforms, only have to know that if you want to develop to iOS, an Apple machine and an iPhone will be needed, but, all the examples for Android can be executed in all OS's, I use Linux and sometimes Windows, for the specific tools to facilitate your development, all that are mentioned have support for windows, and you may find alternatives, I have my own favorites.I recommend this book for everyone who want to make games, this is the best way to speed your project in a structured, organized and complete way.

By Sergio Martinez-Losa del Rincon There is something special in this book, indeed this book covers more than game development with cocos2d-x, it takes advantage of other topics like networking, HTTP request usage and SQLite integration to expand a simple development and turn you game into a great development.Besides this topics, there is a great chapter about physics with simple examples, this is one of the most difficult topic and this chapter makes it easy. The book cover many over themes like font management, UI designing, game UX and sprite sheet design. This book gives a lot of useful information to make a game from scratch to professional and the examples lets you develop a full game step by step.Cocos2d-x is available for several platforms and this books even tells hoe to configure all your tools and resources to build a game for iOS and Android.

This book uses version 3.4 which is no less than perfect for creating 2D games and you can also use new SDK APIs with it without any trouble as at that time only cocos2d-x SDK APIs were introduced.---------TL;DR---------I expected real game usages would have been demonstrated which can be used directly or with some modifications or atleast would have given picture of where all it can be used. I guess, this is what cookbook stands for and not simply showing working of APIs.But I liked few chapters of this book for different reasons.----------CONS:----------1) Drawing shapes has been shown but real examples of it are not shown. I personally, think that merely showing working API is not a big deal.2) Progress Loader bar is show but timer is used to make progress and not actual resource loading where tough works goes in to implement to find out how many resources are loaded in the memory.3) Page view is shown which is good but this is normal API usage. Could have been better if had shown how page view is implemented to create cool menus like in Angry birds and some other games where on the screen, apart from the current page, some part of left and right page are also shown so that player knows that there is still something to be swiped left/right.---------PROS:---------1) Book is well organised. 'How it works’ part after every topic is good to have.2) Animations using plist is shown which is pretty convenient way if lots of animations are there in a game.3) ScrollView and Page View API usage is shown which you will miss in other places and which I remember I spent good time in implementing by myself. But it's merely API usage and you would have to think on how you can use this to adapt to your needs.4) VideoPlayer api is shown if someone wants to use movie player in his game. On different note, you can also show youtube videos from new SDK APIs.5) Physics chapter is explained nicely. But it uses inbuilt physics engine which is actually built upon chipmunk-not box2d but it’s as good as box2d for many games. I liked changing the gravity using accelerometer - I never thought I could it this way.6) People who are not aware of the tools to pack and use resources of your game in a professional way then you might like chapter 10 ‘’Improving Games with Extra features’.------------------------USPs of this book------------------------1) Chpt7: 'Working with Resource Files' is really good, particularly usage of sqlite for saving game data.2) Chpt11:'Taking Advantages’.a) Encrypting sqlite files for securing game data which is essential if you don't want players to change coins, etc they've earned in the game.b) Sprite sheet encryption is shown but very few games use it as it might need heavy processing before loading the game on mobiles. Anyways, example shows texture packer way for encrypting sprite sheets which is a paid feature.c) Observer pattern is shown which is actually the same as push notification section of the book Cocos2d-x beginner guide by example but with different example.(Just for a note, example in latter book is better example as it directly matches ready to use need. But it might not be the compulsory thing that you might want to add observer pattern, if you're a beginner, in your game because it’s a way how you design code and not something you can't avoid. Also, note, Push Notifications which I just talked about in 2nd book is not same as push notifications that we receive in our smartphones.)d) Http networking is shown which is almost same as cocos2d-x official programmer’s guide example. But this book gives a bit more explanation with a working example which might arouse curiosity in some readers. So, you might like it.e) Using native code(Objective C/Java usage with C++) which can be required by few games where developer wants some kind of processing based on which platform it is. Usage is shown but CCLOG is used which I don’t like in books as I don't find it as a good way to demonstrate a practical example.

Now Harriet's mom has the audacity to sign Harriet up for dancing lessons. Dancing lessons! As the self-proclaimed "clumsiest 12-year-old-girl on the planet", Harriet is sure of two things - she is not a dancer, and she will not, definitely not, ever be caught dead in a tutu.Diary of a Dancing Drama Queen is a fun adventure told through the eyes of Harriet Hughes as she negotiates all the twists and turns of sixth grade and dance class. Harriet may be a little bit of a drama queen, but as a reader, I instantly fell in love with her and cruised gleefully through her story.Author Louise Lintvelt has crafted a wonderful and compelling protagonist in Harriet, and I think the middle-grade reading crowd will relate well to her voice and all her minor trials and tribulations. In the style of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Lintvelt sprinkles the book with bolded exclamations and fun drawings that add an extra layer of engagement.Diary of a Dancing Drama Queen is a fun and safe read for younger readers. Harriet struggles with boy crushes, makes a new friend, and learns some important lessons along the way, such as - it doesn't matter if you look a little foolish as long as you have a blast!I am hooked on Harriet and am itching to pick up the second book in the Harriet Hughes series.(This book was provided to Compulsion Reads for review by the author.)

It is written in the style of Diary of a Wimpy Kid but from a 12 year old girl’s perspective. The main character, Harriet, is very likable. She is a little dramatic when things embarrass her and she writes all about it in her diary. She has a quirky, slightly sarcastic sense of humor that had me laughing several times while reading the story and I loved the little hand drawn pictures that appear throughout the book. There are great friendships, wonderful family relationships, and of course boy drama, along with some character growth. I love that Harriet figures out that her initial thoughts about people and activities are sometimes wrong and that being open to trying new things can change your life.Quote from Diary of a Dancing Drama Queen:I could not help but think how glad I was that mom had made me take a dance class. Dancing had been the start of wonderful things and if mom had not made me go, I would never have overcome my fears…..Mom is right—-life is way more fun if you let go of your inhibitions and just have fun.Book 2, in this fun and cute series is Diary of a Pop Sensation.*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*

I read it every free chance I had and finished it in less than a day. I did not want to put it down.Diary of a Dancing Drama Queen is a fun little read that I think a lot of fourth through sixth grade girls can relate to. Harriet is like most young girls. She thinks she is not pretty, not coordinated, and the loser of her grade. Harriet does have friends and ends up being friends with someone she thought would never be her friend.Harriet’s mother and father are great. They are normal parents despite what Harriet thinks. The dance classes were fun to read about. I enjoyed Harriet’s drawings throughout her diary. Diary of a Dancing Drama Queen ended in a cliffhanger and I definitely want to read the next book in this series.Would I recommend it: I would recommend it to the younger crowd. Will I read it again: I will probably reread it again when it is time for my daughter to read it.(I received a copy of this book for review purposes.)

Amazing, simple, philosophical book By A Customer This simply written and quaintly archaic book written in the 40's is a must-read for the dreamer who needs to "go to his cabin in the woods" from time to time to stay sane. He rambles around topic-wise, touching on cooking, water systems, etc. His best advice: take a long time to build. Ten years is about right- He recommends visiting and studying the site for at least a year! From a practical standpoint, his cabins are the northwoods type with round logs and simple notches.

24 of 25 people found the following review helpful. Your Cabin in the Woods by Conrad Meinecke By Michael Ziegler This book was originally a private printing produced by Meinecke for his friends. It was published in 1945 to offer returning soldiers from WW 2 an opportunity to find peace in the simple life of living in the woods in your own home-built log cabin. But it is so much more!! It is a romantic book of the mind as well. There is a spirit in this book based on Meinecke's wisdom and personal experiences as a young man living in the woods with "necktie Jim" an Indian companion. It may be the greatest combination of building plans and a living philosophy ever written. Even if you never intend to have a cabin save for an imaginary one in your mind, this is the book to buy. Meinecke gets into your heart and soul as he speaks about nature, like Whitman in "Leaves of Grass" and you will never be the same ever again!

20 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Really a spiritual guide By Reid R Miller This book is by far and away my favorite all-time book. I have read and re-read it so many times...it is truly wonderful. It is really more of a spiritual guide to building in the woods, although the simple plans are chock full of great ideas. There isn't anyone who loves the "great out-of-doors" that won't love this book.

What would the life of Buddha look like if it were lived today?Anita Feng has crafted in Sid a delightful jewel that captures both the classic story of the Buddha, as well a deeply personal and familiar reflection of the story in a contemporary retelling. Sid weaves the traditional tale of Siddhartha, the Buddha-to-be with the story of Sid, an everyman who finds himself waking up amid the reality of work and family life in the modern world. Returning to the standard tale with careful consideration of the relationships in Buddha’s life—to his wife, parents, and child—Feng’s narrative embodies the Mahayana perspective of living one’s enlightenment in the world. Beautifully told in poetic prose, Sid teaches that the key to the story of the Buddha’s life is that the story could be about any of us. Includes beautiful black and white illustrations, created especially for this book.

Sid, by Anita Feng

Review “Maybe three times in my life I've wept at the sheer beauty of a book. This is one of those times. There is heartbreak. There is humor. There is joy. There is aliveness and compassion. And there is love, great love.” (Geri Larkin, author of Close to the Ground)“Sid is a magical read, sweet, sad, beautiful. A haunting Zen imagining of the Buddha's life and our own.” (James Ishmael Ford, author of If You're Lucky, Your Heart Will Break)“Feng tells us, in luminous prose-poem paragraphs, about an ordinary contemporary high school math teacher, whose journey parallels the Buddha’s. Sid reminds me that I, too, ordinary as I am, have Buddha nature, and that my seeking is not in vain. We can all see the morning star if we look.” (Susan Moon, coeditor of The Hidden Lamp)

About the Author Anita Feng's major awards in poetry include an NEA grant, an Illinois Arts Council grant, a Washington State GAP award and the Pablo Neruda Prize. Publications include two books of poetry, "Internal Strategies," published by the University of Akron Press and "Sadie & Mendel," winner of the Backwaters Press Prize. Individual works have been published by "Nimrod, Ploughshares, Black Warrior Review, North American Review, Northwest Review, "and "Primavera" among others. Her poetry has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. She teaches Zen at the Blue Heron Zen Community in Seattle, Washington, and works as a ceramic artist making raku Buddhas.

When she mentions a young rabbit, full of life and immediacy, she says: "It's all one to him, a universe of energetic joy that he is destined and determined to attain." Her book is her wish and her effort to help each one of us realize that same universe.

Told in brief episodes and from many perspectives, the story of the Buddha is told in two parallel story lines, the traditional one about the Buddha and a contemporary one about Sid. Those who know something of the traditional story will enjoy the new versions of mythological elements, sort of like reading the Lightening Thief if you are familiar with Greek myth. It’s clever. If you listen for Buddhism and Zen you will hear it, whether in the teaching of math, conversation about the Transformers or advice of the midwife: “Astonishing isn’t it, Sid? … it’s a rude shock, a routine slap meant to make you breathe yourself alive.” If you look, it teaches. With their lives mirroring each other, this work answers what the modern life of a Buddha might look like, what Buddhism can address. Instead of withdrawing to a monastery, the modern Buddha is found dealing with wife and son in an ordinary life. Beautifully written, sometimes mysterious, at other times poignant and humorous, I found it a delightful read.

It is rich, meditative poem in prose about the life of the historical Buddha Siddhartha, and of Sid, whose story echoes more than just the name of Siddhartha. The mythology of the Buddha's early years as an ascetic seeker and teacher creates the backdrop for the the story of Sid, the gifted child of a widowed professor of "dead languages." The secondary characters also have important voices in the story, especially the wives of Siddhartha and Sid, who provide thoughts and perspectives that are often missing from the Siddhartha narrative. A companion cast of animal characters reminds the reader that all of this human drama is part of the wider natural world. The author's skill as a poet and wordsmith is undeniable, and the illustrations are simple yet illuminating of the text. The book is not long, but it is rich, and invites re-reading.

By Charissa This book is NOT helpful. This book does not provide useful information. This book is poorly edited.Sentences contain multiple tenses and every passage is riddled with spelling and grammatical errors. The book is only around 15 pages long with very large font.It is so hard to read! Not because of the material presented, but because is was written so poorly. Sentence structure is hapharzard and makes little sense and in many passages it is difficult to determine what it is that the author was trying to convey.

L'Appel De La Forêt (Annoté) (French Edition), by Jack London
