5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. and am very glad I bought this new version By Amethyst I had an earlier version of Macbook for Dummies, and am very glad I bought this new version, which tells about all then new cool features with the newest operating system, El Capitan. I don't have a Macbook Pro YET, but I bought this book and the earlier version several years ago specifically to familiarize myself with Apple laptops before buying one. This is very well written, and easy to understand. Mark L. Chambers is one of my favorite Dummies writers for Apple products. I recommend this new version of Macbook for Dummies.

Bought me a Macbook Pro notebook and this book. The book has been a welcome transition aid as I have it loaded on my Kindle and the Kindle app. Easy to reference and use. Written in the typical "for Dummies" format that I am used to from other editions on other subjects.

Winner of the 2015 Man Booker PrizeA recipient of the 2015 American Book AwardOne of the Top 10 Books of 2014 – Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times A New York Times Book Review Notable Book Named a best book of the year by: The New York Times Chicago Tribune The Washington Post The Boston Globe Time Newsweek The Huffington Post The Seattle Times The Houston Chronicle Publishers Weekly Library Journal Popsugar BookPage BuzzFeed Books Salon Kansas City Star L Magazine A “thrilling, ambitious . . . intense” (Los Angeles Times) novel that explores the attempted assassination of Bob Marley in the late 1970s.  In A Brief History of Seven Killings, Marlon James combines masterful storytelling with his unrivaled skill at characterization and his meticulous eye for detail to forge a novel of dazzling ambition and scope. On December 3, 1976, just before the Jamaican general election and two days before Bob Marley was to play the Smile Jamaica Concert to ease political tensions in Kingston, seven unnamed gunmen stormed the singer’s house, machine guns blazing. The attack wounded Marley, his wife, and his manager, and injured several others. Little was officially released about the gunmen, but rumors abounded regarding the assassins’ fates. A Brief History of Seven Killings is James’s fictional exploration of that dangerous and unstable time in Jamaica’s history and beyond. Deftly spanning decades and continents and peopled with a wide range of characters—assassins, drug dealers, journalists, and even ghosts—James brings to life the people who walked the streets of 1970s Kingston, who dominated the crack houses of 1980s New York, and who reemerged into a radically altered Jamaica of the 1990s. Brilliantly inventive, A Brief History of Seven Killings is an “exhilarating” (The New York Times) epic that’s been called “a tour de force” (The Wall Street Journal).

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, October 2014: This is a book that I did not expect to enjoy. Having finished it—and feeling, as I do now, that A Brief History of Seven Killings is one of the best books I’ve read all year—I went back and identified the reasons why I did not expect to like it. Reason #1— The story is an oral history told in multiple voices: that’s true, but James’ enormous talent makes the multiple voices work. Reading the novel is an immersive experience—the characters are real, they are engaging, and James uses them to look at all sides of the story. Yes, the multiple points-of-view are difficult at first, but each voice quickly distinguishes itself as unique and important; the payoff is a novel of sweeping scope and emotion. Reason #2—Many of the characters speak in Jamaican patois: like many readers, I’m not a big fan of dialect on the page. Tell me what they say, not necessarily how they say it. But James pulls it off with remarkable ease. I expected the patois to start to grate once I got further into the book. It never did. The language only added to my understanding of the story and its characters. Reason #3—Violence: this is not an easy book, particularly when it comes to violence. It starts early, and there’s a lot of it (certainly more than seven killings). But it’s there for a reason. By showing the violence, the poverty, and the struggle to survive in 70s Jamaica, James illustrates how the ghetto can change a person. Over time, we see how every man and woman is changed. Reason #4 –It’s about Jamaica: I hesitate to admit that I wasn’t initially interested in a book set in Jamaica. Am I just not interested in a world so different from mine? Whatever the underlying reason, I was wrong to think that way. I could take the easy route and say that this novel is about something more than Jamaica, but that seems obvious. All I can say is: these people were real to me. And like all great novels, James’ work drew me in, entertained me, and changed me in ways I could not have anticipated. –Chris Schluep

Review “[Marlon James] is a virtuoso …[the novel is] an epic of postcolonial fallout, in Jamaica and elsewhere, and America’s participation in that history. …the book is not only persuasive but tragic, though in its polyphony and scope it’s more than that….It makes its own kind of music, not like Marley’s, but like the tumult he couldn’t stop.” —New York Times Book Review   “Nothing short of awe-inspiring.” —Entertainment Weekly   “How to describe Marlon James’s monumental new novel A Brief History of Seven Killings? It’s like a Tarantino remake of The Harder They Come but with a soundtrack by Bob Marley and a script by Oliver Stone and William Faulkner, with maybe a little creative boost from some primo ganja. It’s epic in every sense of that word: sweeping, mythic, over-the-top, colossal and dizzyingly complex. It’s also raw, dense, violent, scalding, darkly comic, exhilarating and exhausting—a testament to Mr. James’s vaulting ambition and prodigious talent.” —The New York Times   “[A] tour de force… [an] audacious, demanding, inventive literary work.” —Wall Street Journal   “Rendered with virtuosic precision and deep empathy.” –Time   “Exploding with violence and seething with arousal, the third novel by Marlon James cuts a swath across recent Jamaican history…This compelling, not-so-brief history brings off a social portrait worthy of Diego Rivera, antic and engagé, a fascinating tangle of the naked and the dead.” —The Washington Post “A strange and wonderful novel…Mr. James’s chronicle of late 20th-century Jamaican politics and gang wars manages consistently to shock and mesmerise at the same time.” —The Economist  “James has written a dangerous book, one full of lore and whispers and history… [a] great book... James nibbles at theories of who did what and why, and scripts Marley’s quest for revenge with the pace of a thriller. His achievement, however, goes far beyond opening up this terrible moment in the life of a great musician. He gives us the streets, the people, especially the desperate, the Jamaicans whom Marley exhorted to: ‘Open your eyes and look within:/ Are you satisfied with the life your living?’” —The Boston Globe   “Thrilling, ambitious…Both intense and epic.” —Los Angeles Times   “A prismatic story of gang violence and Cold War politics in a turbulent post-independence Jamaica.” —The New Yorker   “I highly recommend you pick [A Brief History of Seven Killings] up. As a book of many narrators, this novel reminds me of Roberto Bolano's The Savage Detectives.” —NPR, All Things Considered   “An impressive feat of storytelling: raw, uncompromising, panoramic yet meticulously detailed. The Jamaica portrayed here is one many people have heard songs about but have never seen rendered in such arresting specificity—and if they have, only briefly.” —Chicago Tribune   “A sweeping novel that touches on family, friendship, celebrity, art, sexuality, ghetto politics, geopolitics, drug trade, gender, race and more, sending the reader from Jamaica to New York via Miami and Cuba and back.” —Newsweek   “Like a capacious 19th-century novel crossed with a paranoid Don DeLillo conspiracy-theory thriller…the book rewards time spent, bringing a complex perspective on violence, corruption, and the untidiness of humanity to vivid life and astonishing detail. It makes you want to rush out and read everything else James has written.” —The Philadelphia Inquirer   “The way James uses language is amazing….Vigorous, intricate and captivating, A Brief History of Seven Killings is hard to put down.” —Ebony     “A gripping tale in which music, drugs, sex, and violence collide with explosive results.” —Bustle   “James’s masterful novel radiates; [it’s] a character-driven tale that takes place in a maelstrom of guns, drugs and politics.” —Playboy   “Brilliantly executed… The novel makes no compromises, but is cruelly and consummately a work of art.” —The Minneapolis Star Tribune

Ambitious, Well Rendered, And Difficult By Falkor A BRIEF HISTORY OF SEVEN KILLINGS is bound to be a bestseller as it has an intriguing premise inspired by fact, an interesting setting and many critical endorsements even before the book is actually released. However prospective readers should also know this is a long complicated book that has a diverse cast of characters telling the story. Thankfully there is a list of seventy-six characters mentioned by these narrators sorted by the location and time period where they appear helpfully supplied at the beginning of the book. This list even includes a brief statement of these players' roles in the novel. I admit to turning to these four pages frequently in the course of reading the novel. Some of the narration uses a great deal of slang that is occasionally difficult to figure out even using context clues. I found myself often using internet resources to decipher some of this language as well as to get more background information about Jamaica in the 1970's, 80's and early 90's. This is certainly an ambitious book and it is well rendered. However the casual reader may want to realize the investment in time and effort needed to appreciate it.

Who am I kidding? There's no probably about it. Marlon James has constructed an incredibly complex story, and it took every bit of memory available to me to keep up. He was kind enough to include a cast of characters, but I made it a point to refer to it as little as possible, opting instead to try and follow the story under my own power.Add to the story's complexity the fact that most of the characters are from the ghettos of Kingston, and speak in a patois that takes some serious acclimation initially, and will slow your reading speed to a crawl at times. Amazingly though, after spending nearly a week with these characters, I felt like I had picked up the meanings quite well and could read those sections much quicker. Strangely, for me, this adaptation was the most rewarding aspect of this particular reading experience. In fact, as much respect as I now have for Marlon James' talent, I have to admit that I did not actually enjoy this novel, and found it made for an almost constantly uncomfortable reading experience. The last time I felt the inability to enjoy such a well written book, I was reading In Other Rooms, Other Wonders, a Pulitzer finalist. Both books require the reader to spend most of their time in very difficult places. By difficult I mean places where innocents suffer a great deal of agony and injustice, and both books left me feeling a certain hopelessness from which I felt the reader was never released. That may well be James' intention, and the fact that he could take me to such places and make them feel so real as to make me uncomfortable is a testament to his talents. This novel contains a great deal of incredibly graphic violence (including rape), and in fact I cannot name a more graphically violent novel that I've read in the past few years. Perhaps Philip Meyers' "The Son" comes close? There is also a lot of quite graphic sex, and since the majority of the novel's many characters are hardcore criminals, the language is very often coarse throughout the story. The number of such moments are what makes it difficult for me to recommend the book to anyone whose taste and tolerance for such things I do not know well. But the novel seems to me to have been an honest one, and as you wallow in the depths and the dregs with these gangsters, you sense the suffering from which they were born, and and begin to understand their Machiavellian existence. Again, James was able to take me to some places I've certainly never been, but I can't necessarily say I'm glad I went there.Overall, this is a brilliantly executed novel by a man who possesses a great deal of talent, and yet it is a book that is likely to prove a challenging read to most, for the reasons I've listed and more. I can't say that I'm happy to have read it, but I can certainly appreciate the art that James has created, and I do take some personal satisfaction in having followed such an intricate story to its end. Reading difficult fiction isn't always enjoyable, but it is usually beneficial, and for that I can say I'm grateful to have read A Brief History of Seven Killings.

46 of 48 people found the following review helpful. This one will challenge you -powerful writing By wjb To say this book is impressive is an understatement. But before I go further, let me state that it was a difficult one to complete. I struggled through the dialog, constantly checked the very long list of characters, and wished for another listing to decipher the slang. Sometimes it took me a minute or two to realize what the character's point was and I began that section again. In spite of the difficulties to get through this hard and complex novel, it is ambitious as well. It covers three decades of the unstable history of Jamaica with its stark poverty, the attempted assassination of Bob Marley, and horrific violence told through many voices and dialects. I feel in the future this author will be reading sections to a captivated audience. I hope that he does because I plan to be there, if I can. Unflinching in scope, this young writer is one to watch.

Do you want to create a blog that makes money? Do you feel like your blog is stuck, and you're not sure how to grow it?

Do you ever feel like you're stuck in a vicious cycle of publishing epic blog posts, promoting them everywhere you can, and still not driving very much traffic?

Well, this audiobook is for people like you. Bloggers who have a ton of potential but haven't quite seen any promising results. People who want to take their blogs to the next level and get massive results.

See, I used to be just like you. I really wanted to have my own blog, but I kept putting it off.... Publishing my own words for the entire world to read? What if they hated me? What if no one liked what I had to say? It was scary and intimidating.

What do I do differently today? After finally diving in and starting a blog, I now earn a living off of it. And the income is all passive, meaning I make money while I sleep. All from one little blog? Yes.

See, I used to be a casual blogger. I'd publish posts randomly whenever they came to me. I thought my posts were epic, but this strategy got me nowhere. Once I finally gained some momentum, I never looked back. The road wasn't easy, but I stuck with it. Along the way I discovered a few simple methods and tricks.

It wasn't long until I realized it wasn't as hard or scary as I thought. It was actually pretty simple. And now I make a living off of my blog. And I want to teach you everything I've learned along the way.

See, in this day and age, just setting up a blog and publishing post after post isn't enough. How are you going to stand out from the millions of other blogs out there?

The author deals with subjects such as; writer's block, content generation, and fear of publishing in easy to read advice driven language. I have even noted several of his quotes to add to my motivational notes for my own writing studio. Such as - " All the content you will ever create is a valuable asset." Another power quote I took away is, " The facts become commoditized. Your personal stories can never become commoditized."Now as to why I was very disappointed in this book. I chose to read this title because I was lead to believe that there would be tips to making money while blogging. As I said the start-up and content generation was well covered, but nothing more than a generalized hint or reference to money making was made through-out the book. None of the following questions were addressed.Do you make money by selling and promoting your own products?Do you sell and promote other people's product to generate income? Is selling and promotion the only way to generate income?Do you gain passive income through site clicks? The title was misleading. With the words " How to, and make money doing it" are in the same phrase, I figured there would be more instruction on both components of the title.Well written, but not as informative as it could be.I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review.

Helpful for the novice and veteran blogger alike By Kat This book includes an abundance of information that would be very helpful to a person interested in writing blogs to make a profit. The author has revealed many tips and tricks for the beginner, as well as information that could help a veteran blogger. I have used some of the advice to get started with my own blogging experience, while I cannot truthfully say I have started to make money, I have gained more confidence in the possibility of a future claim and since I have only just started out using the helpful tips and tricks contained in this book, I am sure that the suggestions that I have not used yet will be as successful as those I have used thus far. I am thrilled that I have been given a complimentary copy of this book in order to give an honest review.

By Amazon Customer I got this ebook as an exchange for an honest review.I'm so sorry that I only got to do this review now when I've already finished reading it a few months ago, but there seems to be something wrong with my internet and I only just got to resolve it. That said, I was absolutely surprised when I was reading this ebook, I don't usually read this kinds of book or ebook... I thought it was going to be boring and bland, but it wasn't. It was interesting and I could relate to it because I feel that the author really talks to me, especially when he wrote what he was going through. It was refreshing and insightful, and would be a great tool for those who wants to start a blog and make money out of it. I would recommend this to my friends who are bloggers because this book gives you tips on how you can be an effective blogger like the author. I just want to say thank you to the author for a very engaging, wonderful read; it was such a breeze reading it (compared to my struggle of reading other fiction books). Wow, I didn't know that reading non-fiction self-help book would be such breeze! I always thought it a chore and avoided it until now! Definitely 5 stars especially because the author very generously shares his experiences to his readers!

By Duane Ullery Tim Meyer, Chad Scanlon and Pete Draper combine their considerable talents to forge Sunfall, a series of stories (collected here in one nicely thick paperback edition) which chronicle the struggles of a group of survivors holed up in a retail store after exposure to direct sunlight inexplicably begins to incinerate people across the globe, leaving the human race devastated.Opening with a bang and moving at a brisk pace, this first "season" of Sunfall nicely establishes this new literary universe as a world replete with perils and horrors even more terrifying than the sun, while also providing an intriguing cast of both heroes and villains. Horror and science fiction fans will find a lot to love in this unique and involving premise, which concludes on a stunning note that should have invested readers clamoring for more. Both original and nicely efficient in both execution and style, Sunfall is an absorbing, gruesome, oft times unsettling and always exciting read I recommend genre fans check out. I'm eager to see what the authors bring for season two.

By Caleb Although post-apocalyptic novels, TV shows, and films are currently very much in vogue, many of them follow predictable tropes, plotlines, and characters. Sunfall does not fall into these pitfalls. Instead, Sunfall offers a unique twist on traditional post-apocalyptic fare. While one certainly can see homages and references to sources as diverse as classic literature and modern zombie films, the story maintains its own distinct voice. The main characters are compelling, but enough is left unexplained about them to add suspense and mystery (and to leave you wanting more). I cannot wait for the next installment, and if you start this series, you won't be able to wait, either!

I hated the bad guys, and enjoyed the heck out of the good guys, and gals. The character development was exactly enough to where I had a sense of what these people were like before the burn, and I can't wait to learn more. I'll be starting book 2 tonight! These 3 authors did such a good job on the writing that the flow was smooth and steady, and I had no clue who wrote what. That's Lind of rare for 3 different authors to find that balance. Yep, I'd recommend this book.

Perhaps only the animals can tell us what it is to be humanThe souls of ten animals caught up in human conflicts over the last century and connected to both famous and little-known writers in surprising ways tell their astonishing stories of life and death. In a trench on the Western Front, a cat recalls her owner Colette's theatrical antics in Paris. In Nazi Germany, a dog seeks enlightenment. A Russian tortoise once owned by the Tolstoys drifts in space during the Cold War. During the Siege of Sarajevo, a starving bear tells a fairy tale. And a dolphin sent to Iraq by the U.S. Navy writes a letter to Sylvia Plath. Exquisitely written, playful, and poignant, Ceridwen Dovey's Only the Animals is a remarkable literary achievement by one of our brightest young writers. An animal's-eye-view of humans at our brutal, violent worst and our creative, imaginative best, it asks us to find our way back to empathy not only for animals but for other people, and to believe again in the redemptive power of reading and writing fiction.

Only the Animals: Stories, by Ceridwen Dovey

Review

“These stories are strange and richly imagined, well researched and at times haunting and atmospheric . . . Dovey is a gifted prose stylist . . . This collection unflinchingly illuminates human nature, and makes clear that the rest of the natural world can only bear witness.” ―Megan Mayhew Bergman, The New York Times Book Review

“Inventive . . . Dovey has daringly shrugged off the constraints of conventional fiction. These stories are alternately funny and distressing . . . In Only the Animals, Dovey has tried something audacious. Aiming to see the world anew, she’s crafted an unusual and beguiling ode to the feathered, the four-legged, and the fearless creatures of the sea.” ―Kevin Canfield, Minneapolis Star-Tribune

“Dazzling.” ―Stephanie Cross, The Guardian

“The book doesn’t come across as contrived, in part because Dovey’s prose is so sharp and unsentimental, in part because she is able to use the same premise to such different effects . . , Only the Animals’ doesn’t simplify or sentimentalize, but it does suggest that there is something irreducibly powerful about our imaginative bonds with animals. As long as there are humans, there will be animals, and as long as there are animals, we will think and write and dream about them.” ―Anthony Domestico, The Boston Globe

“Wonderfully weird and profoundly witty . . . Dovey's stories, at once charming and haunting, are something else altogether. "Absorbing" is not quite the right word for them--their poetic oddness keep them at arm's length--but they are intoxicating nonetheless. As unsettling as they are beautiful, these quietly wise stories wedge themselves into your mind--and stay there.” ―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Dovey succeeds in providing original bittersweet tales with the hard-edged truths of history. An essential collection, enthusiastically recommended.” ―Donna Bettencourt, Library Journal (starred review)

“By appropriating history, mythology, folklore, and even astrology, Dovey finds impressive depth and complexity in the souls of an array of animals . . . Dovey finds humanity in her diverse protagonists, and the stories are full of surprises, warmth, and insight.” ―Publishers Weekly

“A beautifully wrought, disconcerting collection.” ―Nell Porter Brown, Harvard Magazine

“I remember being told once that there are bioluminescent plankton; these stories remind me of that fantastic, startling and real illumination. The animal narrators are not mythic, or naive--they are psychologically full. And though the humans in these stories often act like beasts, having actual beasts tell the stories give the reader a broadened sense of what we affectionately term humanity.” ―Rivka Galchen, author of Atmospheric Disturbances

“I have been waiting, since Blood Kin, for another work of fiction by Ceridwen Dovey. Only the Animals is filled with knowledge and wisdom and beauty. It leaves a strange and striking trace on its reader.” ―Rachel Kushner, author of The Flamethrowers

“The life stories related by these very civilized animals are in some cases touching (the elephant), in others amusing (the mussel), but all are absorbing. They are transmitted to us with a light touch and no trace of sentimentality.” ―J. M. Coetzee

“An audacious work of the imagination . . . An extraordinary series of fabulist tales . . . The yarns are funny, tragic, smart, arch, poignant and playful all at once.” ―The Saturday Age (Australia)

Only the animals can show us how human we are By Sally Howes I have never been a big fan of short stories - I have always liked the idea of them more than the actuality. This is the book that changed my mind. ONLY THE ANIMALS takes a uniquely interesting premise - a collection of short stories narrated by the souls of different animals who have experienced the great man-made conflicts, atrocities, and disasters of the past century or so - and fully delivers on its great potential. Every single story is intensely insightful and moving, quietly but emphatically displaying the dignity and compassion of which only the animals are capable. Mankind might dominate the world, but the animals are the ones who remind us just how human we really are. This is not to say that the stories aren't infused with a wonderful sense of playfulness and fun. After all, among other things, we are taken on a road trip (well, waterways trip) with a young mussel, we are taken into outer space with a tortoise, and we get to read a letter written posthumously by a dolphin to Sylvia Plath. Indeed, famous figures from history appear regularly throughout the stories, from Henry Lawson to Leo Tolstoy, Himmler to Virginia Woolf. As one of my favorite narrators from the stories comments, "It was at this time that he named me Plautus the Tortoise, after the Roman comic playwright who valued imagination and the fantastic above anything he could scavenge from real life." These values could also be said to exemplify Ceridwen Dovey, and neither time nor custom can stale the infinite variety of her stories. But the greatest strength of this collection of stories is the insight it gives into human nature, an insight that can only come from outside, an insight that only the animals can provide. While every story is very different from the others, they all share some important qualities. Each of the animal narrators has a quietly respectful sympathy for humans and an implacable honesty about what they see in the supposedly superior species. As Kiki-la-Doucette, the cat who finds herself comforting soldiers in the trenches in France in 1915, says, "... I identify with the refusal of mules to be anything they don't truly feel themselves to be. Humans tend to call this bad manners or lack of respect for authority, but I call it the highest form of authenticity." ONLY THE ANIMALS suggests an authenticity in animals that humans can only wonder at.From this position of authentic frankness, each of the animals in the stories observes humans in all their glory and all their unequalled depravity. Perhaps the most curious and wonderful thing, however, is that the animals' observations are invariably profound without being patronizing. They watch us with a moving tenderness, often appearing baffled by us but at the same time seeing us more clearly than we see ourselves. A chimpanzee named Red Peter gives an example of the piercing insight that so captivated me: "... the humans ... seem to think that what sets them apart from other animals is their ability to love, grieve, feel guilt, think abstractly, et cetera. They are misguided. What sets them apart is their talent for masochism. Therein lies their power. To take pleasure in pain, to derive strength from deprivation, is to be human."I believe the power of stories lies in their capacity to encourage us to ask questions about our world, our society, and our selves. With ONLY THE ANIMALS, Ceridwen Dovey has found an especially powerful means of asking questions about our humanity. I'll leave the last words on this to Sprout the dolphin, who narrates the penultimate story in this marvelous literary menagerie: "Perhaps you should be asking yourselves different questions. Why do you sometimes treat other people as humans and sometimes as animals? And why do you sometimes treat creatures as animals and sometimes as humans?"

Animals and Writers, Animals as Writers By Tonstant Weader Only the Animals by Ceridwen Dovey is a rich and wonderful collection of ten short stories told by the souls of animals who died in human conflicts around the world. Anthropomorphic animals as fodder for authors is as old as Aesop and many of the authors who appear in these stories have written from the perspective of animals, too. But there is something new and fresh in these stories.Perhaps it is the structural framework that makes it so exciting. Each story has three elements in common, they are all told by the souls of self-aware animals who died in human conflicts and at least one great writer is part of the story one way or another. Within those limitations, Dovey demonstrates a limitless ability to imagine and to write. They are all connected to literature, to Kafka, to Tolstoy, to Hesse. My favorite story was told by a mollusk whose pre-World War II adventures sounded like a bivalve Kerouac “On the Boat” told with hilarious gusto as he travels from the Hudson River to Pearl Harbor. “The whole goal was detachment, gathering no algae, freewheeling…we would talk all the time about how we would practice non-attachment while depending on our survival on attaching to a base with our byssus threads.” If you can read that story without laughing, you’ve never read On the Road. Some of the stories take your heart and crush it. The story of the twin elephants who died in a civil war in Mozambique is magical, beautiful and heartbreaking. The US military-trained dolphin who writes a letter to Sylvia Plath broke my heart. Then, there’s the Zelig-like tortoise who goes from Tolstoy to Virginia Woolf to George Orwell (from whom he runs away) to the Soviet Space Program and whose placid wisdom is entrancing. There is Colette’s cat, accidentally left behind at the Front of World War who always felt she was a tom, not a she-cat or Goering’s German Shepherd whose Siddhartha-inspired self-mythology identifies with Fenris the Wolf of Norse mythology. They inhabit, in a way, their writers as well as their animal nature. Why these stories succeed so well as these animals who are self-aware, who are well-read and oh-so-literate also remain animals. Their animal nature remains true, except perhaps for the chimpanzee, our genetic cousin, who is trying to become human.Dovey skillfully adapts her writing style to the different animals and authors. From beat poet to ancient fable, the writing styles vary widely, but feel so very authentic for each animal narrator. She also explores the different reasons people will write from the animal perspective, whether to ask what it means to be human, to show that we too are merely animals, or to say the unsayable, the unthinkable by putting those words in the mouths of animals.I enjoyed this book very much. It made me laugh. More often it made me sad, sometimes it even made me cry for these animals we use and risk and exploit in our wars, whose lives we value so much and then so little whether it’s pampering them as pets and abandoning them in crisis or spending years and small fortunes training them only to send them to their deaths. Our relationship with animals reveals so much about us and these stories, told by animals killed in our wars are telling us truths we might not want to hear. We should listen.

The story involves German professor Otto Lidenbrock who believes there are volcanic tubes going toward the centre of the Earth. Review "The reason Verne is still read by millions today is simply that he was one of the best storytellers who ever lived."  —Arthur C. Clarke"Verne has left us an extraordinary book. . . . It has brought delight to generations of readers, and will for many more. There is nothing so rare as the chance to take an impossible journey, and to believe it so powerfully that we wonder if we will make it out alive. That's magic. And that's Verne's gift."  —Michael Crichton

Review "In 1864 Jules Verne published 'Journey to the Center of the Earth,' the charming narrative of the adventures of a party of three, led by a German professor of mineralogy - the irascible mad-scientist type - who have lowered themselves into an extinct volcanic crater."

Review "The professor has a nephew; he's his research partner. They have this theory, he's slightly mad but they must go and find out [if it is true]. Actual classic mythology has said that Mt. Sneffels [a volcano with a glacier covering its summit in western Iceland] is a portal to the center of the earth."

There are more than one translations into english, one with the Main character's name as Harry, the other as Axel.I read the 'Harry' version first, but only partway through as it was terrible! I thought Verne was a bad writter or something. But, when I was older, I found another copy (Puffin Classics btw), and I thought I'd give it another go. That was one of the best books I had ever read, it funny and imaginative. The characters even had character!Well, I looked into it, and compared my new version with the first book I had read and both of them with the original. Mine was pretty close. The names were kept the same, most of the sentences were similar in structure (so that someone like me who can't read french could tell that they were the same book). The 'Harry version' however, invented entire chapters out of thin air, discarded others and changed significant plot points. I hope this helps some of you decide which one to get, and that there is more than one translation. If the book starts with:"ON 24 May 1863, a Sunday, my uncle, Professor Lidenbrock, came rushing back towards his little house at No.19 Konigstrasse, one of the oldest streets..."You know you have the good version.Otherwise, I love this book and would recomend it to anyone, whether a science fiction fan or not.

PENGUIN/PUFFIN EDITION: A particularly good, modern translation By Librarian [NOTE: Although written for the Penguin/Puffin edition, this review may be attached to other editions as well. If so, much of its information is still pertinent.]This Penguin/Puffin Classics translation (by Robert Baldick) of Verne's wonderful book is absolutely terrific. It is accurate and fun to read. (Sample it to see for yourself.) Of course, readers must make allowances for the book's old-fashioned content and style, and inevitably some (unable to do so) may feel it is too descriptive or that the plot advances too slowly. Hopefully others will find it quaint but exciting, its fabulous descriptions to be marveled at as they vicariously travel with the main characters on a once-in-a-lifetime journey deep inside the earth. Fanciful? Yes. Fun? Definitely. Memorable? Forever.Any true translation (such as in this Puffin Classic) rightly identifies the professor as "Lidenbrock" or "Liedenbrock" NOT as "Hardwigg," and his young partner as "Axel" NOT "Harry." (That is how you can easily distinguish the real vs. a false, anonymous translation that, sadly, is still being sold as if it were the real thing; it isn't even a translation but an adaptation, a total rewrite with different names of characters and numerous plot alterations.) The extent of the problem and confusion becomes obvious when one reads the many reviews associated with this and other editions of this title; notice how many refer to Hardwigg and Harry. Sadly, these people, praising the bogus version as if it were Verne's, have not read the real thing. Don't YOU be fooled. This very sound Baldick translation comes as close (in English) to what Verne actually wrote (in French) to tell his story. The old F.A. Malleson translation also gets it right, but in modern times two translations particularly stand out: this one one by Robert Baldick and one by William Butcher. They are both good, the difference mainly being a matter of style. Some prefer Butcher; I happen to prefer Baldick.Don't let the fact that Baldick's translation here appears in a children's imprint deter you from considering it; this is not a simplified "kiddy" version. It appeared first in 1965 as an adult Penguin book, and twenty years later (unchanged) as a Puffin book, and now as an ebook. Butcher's is more recent and, as he is a noted Verne scholar, his credentials certainly carry weight. But that doesn't necessarily make him a better wordsmith. We read Verne primarily for fun and for the thrill of adventure. Baldick's translation enables us to do just that.I highly recommend Baldick's translation in this Puffin edition to anyone, child or adult, especially since its relatively low price is remarkably enticing for a copyrighted, modern translaton rather than an old, public domain one. But whichever edition of this wonderful novel you may be considering for purchase, and no matter who translates it, give it the Lidenbrock & Axel (READ it) vs. Hardwigg & Harry (AVOID it) test to be certain you are reading the actual story Verne intended.NOTE: If price is an issue, you may wish to consider the aforementoned, sound, older translation by Malleson; it can be obtained as a public domain freebie in the Kindle store by searching under: "free books verne voyage au centre de la terre. English." (The OTHER public domain freebie version is under "free books verne journey to the center of the earth" and is the FALSE one. If you wish, download both freebies and compare; the differences are obvious.)

In the story, Professor Hardwigg and his nephew Harry discover an ancient parchment by an alchemist named Arne Saknussemm. They travel to Iceland and climb an extinct volcano called Sneffels. With them is the Icelandic hunter Hans. They journey into the center of the earth, in which Harry gets lost. They come upon and ocean and cross it. While they are on the sea they witness a battle of ancient sea monsters. Eventually they are thrown out of a volcano on Stromboli, an island in Italy. This was a wonderful book, but sometimes it went into too much detail. Still, a classic five star book. I don't see why anyone would give it 4 1/2 stars. It is simply absurd. I recommened this book to anyone with a good imagination.

Of course you have to be willing to look at the story from the point of view of a person from the time when it was written. I think everyone knows today that the earth does not have large openings at the polar regions. The ideas put forth in the story are very interesting.

"Captain, we've got a passenger losing consciousness."

What do you do, Captain? Declare an Emergency and divert for an overweight landing? Or, risk the passenger's life and continue to destination, hours away? It's your call, but hurtling through the sky at 10 miles per minute, you'd better act fast.

Once again, Author Eric "Cap'n Aux" Auxier puts YOU in the driver's seat of his Airbus A321. More stories, more guest authors, more love, laughs, and tears at Flight Level 390, in an adventure spanning over three decades in the sky!

Eric Auxier is a captain for a major US airline, with over 21,000 hours of flying. He is the author of the 2013 Amazon Top 100 Breakthrough novel, The Last Bush Pilots, as well as the Code Name: Dodger Young Adult "Spy/Fly" series. He is a columnist for Airways Magazine, and his blog Adventures of Cap'n Aux is read by thousands worldwide. There I Wuz!, Volume II is his fifth book; his sixth, Jihadi Hijacking, is due November 2015.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Amazing aviation stories By eretz73 This was the first of Capn Aux's books that I read and I was absolutely fascinated by it. Really, I could not stop turning its pages! His stories draw you in with each page. They are refreshingly smart and they made me giggle and cry, hopeful and sometimes even delicately sad, invariably filling me with surprise, awe, wonder and more than often...they kept me on the edge of my seat!Capn Aux is a wonderfully talented author: he captures the beauty and the challenge of flying, allowing the reader not only to enter his world but also to become an integral part of the action: all is happening around you! His writing reveals his professionalism as well as his courage, his conviction and his love for aviation. His stories are an emotional trip and yet, anyone interested in the technical aspects of the commercial pilot career will find everything accurately illuminated. The other stories (by Karlene Petitt, Jean Denis Marcellin, Ron Rapp and Tawni Waters) intertwine aviation and the authors' various personalities and paths: the end result is simultaneously riveting, informative, and open-hearted. The catching and beautifully written foreword by Mark Berry makes justice to this book, which is truly as graceful and powerful as the Concorde. There is only one flaw to point out: it is too short! Luckily, Capn Aux is a gifted writer and has provided his readers with a few other amazing writings. May he then write at jet-speed!

There is still much to report - there is a need for volume II By Christa The reader who buys this volume is already a fan of Eric Auxier and he or she is worth to get some personal information about him. In the beginning he is presenting his sister and two brothers to whom this volume is dedicated. You see Eric as little child, already interested in wheels, as a smart young man and enjoying life outside his flying activities. He introduces his girl friend at that time and many interesting colleagues. Among the cenral points of this volume are the adventures in the Caribic Sea. There were hard and dangerous times. One Story is leading everybody to thears: about Captain Mary Grace Baloyo - a real hero. All in all again very enjoyable stories which are written in clear and understandle English for all of us. I am looking forward to volume III.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Another Great Read from Cap'n Aux! By Jen_Niffer In the second installment of stories collected from across his aviation career, Eric Auxier once again engages and entertains readers with tales of drama and adventure in the skies. This collection includes one of my personal favorites - an inside look at what it takes to handle a medical emergency at 32,000 feet. Along with Eric's stories there are also chapters from guest authors including Karlene Petitt, Jean Denis Marcellin, Ron Rapp and Tawni Waters. If you are looking for a fun read that doesn't involve a big time commitment, this is your book. Each chapter stands-alone for the perfect lunch-time diversion or before-bed story. You do NOT need to have read There I Wuz Vol I to thoroughly enjoy Vol II - but I highly recommend you check it out as well!
