I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it! I held my breath many times, felt genuine empathy for the characters, and was greatly disappointed when I finished! All in all this is one of the best books I have read in a long time. It made me remember why I spent so many hours reading when I was a kid!I can’t wait to see the next book in the series! I plan to read Wraith again, very soon!

By karen l milstein I read this story in the space of one day, it was so compelling. The characters were real, the situations very understandable, the emotions deep, drawing the reader in. The writing was on a par with a great poem, descriptive and filled with detail that gave me a complete sense of time, place and feeling. Without being explicit, the writer conveys the tragedies that occur to his characters, both in their past and present and allows the reader to experience the emotion each one goes through with them. I especially liked the byplay between Arach and his horse, being an animal lover, I've sort of done the same thing with my cats. I understand from the addendum that there will be more entries in this series. I anxiously await each one.

I was pleasantly surprised. The book was both dark and hopeful. It left me wanting more at the end - I can't wait for the rest of the story to unfold. The story made me sad at times and left me desiring redemption for the characters. The sign of a good book for me is that I feel for the characters and I don't want to put the book down because I want to know the rest of the story - this is that kind of book.

When Love Returns: A Novel (The Zimmerman Restoration Trilogy), by Kim Vogel Sawyer

Review “When Love Returns is a finely interlaced story of first choices, second chances, and a healing heirloom of truth. Kim Vogel Sawyer balances the uncertainty of the past with assurance of a redeemed future in a message that will gracefully infuse hope into the real-life stories of her readers.” —Olivia Newport, author of Amish Turns of Time historical fiction series “I love Kim Vogel Sawyer’s stories and the way they always live up to the promise of ‘gentle stories of hope.’ Her characters draw me in, hold me captive, and leave me with a renewed sense of hope and a stronger faith than I started with.” —Deborah Raney, author of The Face of the Earth and the Chicory Inn Novels Praise for Kim Vogel Sawyer “Kim Vogel Sawyer paints characters with exquisite detail emotionally and physically, then sets them in a story that transports the reader into a world equally as appealing as the people who live there. A captivating read, leaving you wanting more.” —Lauraine Snelling, author of To Everything a Season in the Song of Blessing series, Wake the Dawn, and Heaven Sent Rain “With a compelling style, Kim Vogel Sawyer weaves a story of love, compassion, forgiveness, and redemption and a family determined to discover and accept the truth. This novel captivates and challenges—a wonderful read.” —Judith Miller, best-selling author of the Home to Amana Series “Kim Vogel Sawyer is a superior writer, showing the reader the inner workings of a family steeped in rigid rules and a powerful regard for family pride. Forgiveness may be out of reach for a family jaded by derision. Sawyer is able to tie all the pieces of their lives together and keep readers interested in a possibility of another story about adoption and loss.” —RT: Reviews, When Mercy Rains “Kim Vogel Sawyer has crafted an affecting, emotion-packed novel about two damaged souls whose faith and courage ultimately come shining through. With its vividly rendered settings and well-rounded characters, this lovely story is sure to please Ms. Sawyer’s many fans.” —Dorothy Love, author of Carolina Gold “Kim Vogel Sawyer’s heartfelt writing and careful attention to detail make her one of the industry’s favorites.” —Lori Copeland, author of The Healer’s Touch

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. When Love Returns is the final book in The Zimmerman Restoration Trilogy! By Kris Anderson - The Avid Reader When Love Returns by Kim Vogel Sawyer is the third book in the Zimmerman Restoration Trilogy. Cynthia Allgood had a baby when she was a teenager. The day after she gave birth she left the baby behind the Indianapolis Home for Unwed Mothers. Twenty years later her husband is giving her the opportunity to find her daughter. He has put down a retainer on Owen Mallory, a private investigator. Will finding her daughter be a good thing for Cynthia?Alexa Zimmerman is enjoying life in Arborville, Kansas with her mother (Suzanne), grandmother, and her other relations (she did not about her extended family until recently). But Alexa would like to know about her biological parents. Alexa decides to take a break during the slow season for the Grace Notes Bed and Breakfast (she started it on her grandmother’s farm). Alexa goes back to Indiana with Tom and Linda Denning (friends of Suzanne and Alexa’s who came to visit for Christmas). Will Alexa be able to find the answers she is seeking?Suzanne is staying in Arborville. She has decided not to go back to Indiana to her old life. She is happy to be back with her family. It is hard, though, being near the daughter she gave away especially with Anna Grace’s wedding approaching. Suzanne was forced (by her mother) to give up Anna Grace twenty years ago. Will Anna Grace ever want to know the truth about her birth parents? Suzanne spending more time with Paul Aldrich (her teenage love and the father of Anna Grace). Can they have a relationship? Suzanne will have to join the Old Order Mennonite faith in order to be with Paul. Is she willing to join the faith and is this what God wants for her? Will there be a happily ever after for Suzanne and Paul? When Love Returns is not a stand-alone novel. You need to read the first two books in The Zimmerman Restoration trilogy or you will not understand everything going on in the book. When Love Returns is well written and you will not want to put it down (I just loved it). I believe this was my favorite book out of all three of them. One thing I did not understand, though, is why Alexa was told that Suzanne was not her real mother (this is not a spoiler). Suzanne had a birth certificate for her daughter that lists her as mother. Why did Suzanne tell Alexa that she was not her daughter? I thought this was confusing. Another odd note is the information the private investigator obtains at the Indianapolis Home for Unwed Mothers. I do not believe he would be able to get this type of information (name of a former resident) by just talking with the director. Overall, When Love Returns is a page turner. It is a fitting end to the trilogy. I love how the author wrapped up all the story lines. I give When Love Returns 5 out of 5 stars.I received a complimentary copy of When Love Returns from Blogging for Books (and the publisher) in exchange for an honest review.

Hippie Modernism examines the art, architecture and design of the counterculture of the 1960s and early 1970s. The catalogue surveys the radical experiments that challenged societal norms while proposing new kinds of technological, ecological and political utopia. It includes the counter-design proposals of Victor Papanek and the anti-design polemics of Global Tools; the radical architectural visions of Archigram, Superstudio, Haus-Rucker-Co and ONYX; the installations of Ken Isaacs, Joan Hills, Mark Boyle, Hélio Oiticica and Neville D'Almeida; the experimental films of Jordan Belson, Bruce Conner and John Whitney; posters and prints by Emory Douglas, Corita Kent and Victor Moscoso; documentation of performances by the Diggers and the Cockettes; publications such as Oz and The Whole Earth Catalog; books by Marshall McLuhan and Buckminster Fuller; and much more. While the turbulent social history of the 1960s is well known, its cultural production remains comparatively under-examined. In this substantial volume, scholars explore a range of practices such as radical architectural and anti-design movements emerging in Europe and North America; the print revolution in the graphic design of books, posters and magazines; and new forms of cultural practice that merged street theater and radical politics. Through a profusion of illustrations, interviews with figures including: Gerd Stern of USCO; Ken Isaacs; Gunther Zamp Kelp of Haus-Rucker-Co; Ron Williams and Woody Rainey of ONYX; Franco Raggi of Global Tools; Tony Martin; Clark Richert and Richard Kallweit of Drop City; as well as new scholarly writings, this book explores the conjunction of the countercultural ethos and the modernist desire to fuse art and life.

Review In its exploration of counterculture, Hippie Modernism: The Struggle of Utopia brings together designs for alternate communities…the mind-expanding prototypes anticipate the themes of ecology, recycling, immersive environments and audience participation which are so prevalent in the art world today. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great investigation By Jules I was very disappointed to read a previous one star review judging the book for having too much content... this is an excellent book if you expect to learn something about the spirit of the times and how it influenced design thinking. If you want to know where architecture, art, design, and counterculture overlap and how it happened, this is the book for you. It gave me a lot of clarity on why pneumatics got so darn popular, among many other topics! I loved the design of the book as well especially with the section breaks using uniquely textured paper. Overall intellectually exciting, visual pleasing, and insightful volume!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Insightful and original By Mike Kuniavsky Fantastic collection of thought and original research, presented with the same mix of humor and insight as the original source material. The amount of text was just right for me.

0 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Might work well as a doorstop By SD Thurber This catalog was a disappointment. Entirely too heavy. Too much text. Too few photos. I was hoping for something more visually appealing. If you are a theory head, you may love this catalog but, as an artist, I like to look at pictures with the text as sidebar. I am deeply interested in this topic and was drawn in by the cover which is great. I also have to admit that I am a lover of beautiful books. For me, the design of the book got in the way. It was all printed on a flat industrial paper which could have worked if the designer hadn't been trying so hard to make it feel like it hadn't been designed . I understand the choice of paper. I am sure that the posters and flyers of the day influenced it along with a desire for the publication not to feel too precious since the topic didn't lend itself to an overly sumptuous cocktail table kind of book. Maybe if the pictures that were in it were set off somehow? Maybe a light matte gloss on them to set them apart? It is entirely possible that the design was meant to echo the chaotic and creative feel of the times. In that way I get it but that feel can be conveyed without throwing visual literacy out the window. I recently picked up the Black Mtn Catalog for the ICA Boston show and it was perfect. I only mention this because the topics although not the same do have some similarities.... they both describe times of great creative upheaval. It is entirely possible that I am too long in the tooth to appreciate a book like this but I was so excited to get it and couldn't find my way into it. It immediately went back the way it came.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. a very good motivation... By Shades of Purple I think more than anything else, one reason to consider having your own tiny house is that perk of not having to worry about mortgage payment. This is something really relevant for some people. That is why having a book like this one, Constructing A Tiny House On A Budget And Living Mortgage Free, will always come in handy. I think this book is quite helpful too. And I really appreciate the book's clear discussions of the things that will make deciding to go for a tiny house very smart. Talking about the things one needs in order to make his own tiny house, how to plan and how to make a checklist, how to plan rooms and multipurpose spaces, and a lot more. I also love the pictures included, they are a very good motivation.

This book Tiny houses: Constructing a tiny house on a budget is such a helpful guide. It is clearly and concisely written. Chapters are laid out in a logical and easy to read way. Highly enjoyable read and I got so many tips and ideas. I'm ready to get started.

In January, my family’s moving to a new, smaller house. I don’t mind at all because a smaller house not only means less clutter, but also a constant design challenge for me. I loved the ideas presented in this book. They have inspired me and I listed down a few that I really, really liked in terms of planning and interior design. The illustrations were a nice addition, too. Now I’m too excited to fix my house! My only comment is that this book was short. I wish they made this longer!

A Best Book of the Year: San Francisco Chronicle, NPR, Minneapolis Star TribuneHere is a selection of Munro’s most accomplished and powerfully affecting short fiction from the last two decades, a companion volume to A Wilderness Station: Selected Stories, 1968–1994. These stories encompass the fullness of human experience, from the wild exhilaration of first love (in “Passion”) to the punishing consequences of  leaving home (“Runaway”) or ending a marriage (“The Children Stay”). And in stories that Munro has described as “closer to the truth than usual”—”Dear Life,” “Working for a Living,” and “Home”—we glimpse the author’s own life.        Subtly honed with her hallmark precision, grace, and compassion, these stories illuminate the quotidian yet astonishing particularities in the lives of men and women, parents and children, friends and lovers as they discover sex, fall in love, part, quarrel, suffer defeat, set off into the unknown, or find a way to be in the world.

Review

“What a stunning, subtle and sympathetic explorer of the heart Munro is.” —The Washington Post“Generations to come will relish and study Family Furnishings. . . . A superb introduction for those new to her work, and a reminder to longtime fans that Munro is a writer to be cherished.” —NPR“Brilliant. . . . In the simplest of words, and with the greatest of power, she makes us see and hear an ‘unremarkable’ scene we will never forget.” —The New York Review of Books    “Turn to just about any page and you’ll discover a brilliant insight into human behavior. . . . Family Furnishings reminds us that Munro is our greatest contemporary short story writer.” —USA Today“[An] extraordinary collection. . . . Munro seems to have gotten hold of our own darkest feelings about the people in our lives and transformed them, gloriously, into art.” —San Francisco Chronicle   “The preeminent short-fiction writer of her time. . . . Astonishing. . . . Stunning. . . . Remind[s] us that fiction, at its most profound and moving, is about human endurance, which makes it very much a reflection of reality.” —Los Angeles Times   “Munro’s literary genius for the short-story form has been widely deemed incomparable. The Canadian writer captures those small moments that reverberate through ordinary lives in meticulous prose. Her economy in words fashions a language that pierces the heart.” —New York Daily News   “These are human stories, and great ones. . . . Nobody can tell a tale, spin a character, break a heart, the way Alice Munro can.” —Minneapolis Star Tribune   “Munro may have arrived at the end of her career, but her stories keep changing, as works of art tend to do. . . . Because Munro’s people often act unpredictably—they wind up doing things they hadn’t known they were going to do and startle themselves—the stories, even on repeated readings, retain their original suspense, their sense that anything can happen.” —The New York Times Book Review   “If there’s literary pleasure greater than reading Alice Munro, it must be rereading Alice Munro.” —The Seattle Times   “It is no exaggeration to state that Munro’s short stories are among the finest that have ever been written. She’s sure to endure alongside Poe, Hemingway and O’Connor. . . . She’s that rare writer who is able to match her early career achievements and even top them.” —The Dallas Morning News   “A writer who slowly fashioned a house of fiction large enough for both a room of her own and all of her family furnishings—ensuring that she herself had space to maneuver while others still had plenty of space to stretch out and live. Those others include us, her very lucky readers.” — The Philadelphia Inquirer     “Munro’s stories are remarkable for their evocation of places and the people who live there, for ambiguities, their ellipses, and their deftness. Her prose is lucid: ranging from delicacy to forthright attack, sometimes witty, ironic.” —The Washington Times

Actually, however, this science requires great fantasy. —Sophia Kovalevsky   On the first day of January, in the year 1891, a small woman and a large man are walking in the Old Cemetery, in Genoa. Both of them are around forty years old. The woman has a childishly large head, with a thicket of dark curls, and her expression is eager, faintly pleading. Her face has begun to look worn. The man is immense. He weighs 285 pounds, distributed over a large frame, and being Russian, he is often referred to as a bear, also as a Cossack. At present he is crouching over tombstones and writing in his notebook, collecting inscriptions and puzzling over abbreviations not immediately clear to him, though he speaks Russian, French, English, Italian, and has an under- standing of classical and medieval Latin. His knowledge is as expansive as his physique, and though his speciality is governmental law, he is capable of lecturing on the growth of contemporary political institutions in America, the peculiarities of society in Russia and the West, and the laws and practices of ancient empires. But he is not a pedant. He is witty and popular, at ease on various levels, and able to live a most comfortable life, due to his properties near Kharkov. He has, however, been forbidden to hold an academic post in Russia, because of being a Liberal.   His name suits him. Maksim. Maksim Maksimovich Kovalevsky.   The woman with him is also a Kovalevsky. She was married to a distant cousin of his, but is now a widow.   She speaks to him teasingly.   “You know that one of us will die,” she says. “One of us will die this year.”   Only half listening, he asks her, Why is that?   “Because we have gone walking in a graveyard on the first day of the New Year.”   “Indeed.”   “There are still a few things you don’t know,” she says in her pert but anxious way. “I knew that before I was eight years old.”   “Girls spend more time with kitchen maids and boys in the stables—I sup- pose that is why.”   “Boys in the stables do not hear about death?”   “Not so much. Concentration is on other things.”   There is snow that day but it is soft. They leave melted, black footprints where they’ve walked.   She met him for the first time in 1888. He had come to Stockholm to advise on the foundation of a school of social sciences. Their shared nationality, going so far as a shared family name, would have thrown them together even if there was no particular attraction. She would have had a responsibility to entertain and generally take care of a fellow Liberal, unwelcome at home.   But that turned out to be no duty at all. They flew at each other as if they had indeed been long-lost relatives. A torrent of jokes and questions followed, an immediate understanding, a rich gabble of Russian, as if the languages of Western Europe had been flimsy formal cages in which they had been too long confined, or paltry substitutes for true human speech. Their behavior, as well, soon overflowed the proprieties of Stockholm. He stayed late at her apartment. She went alone to lunch with him at his hotel. When he hurt his leg in a mishap on the ice, she helped him with the soaking and dressing and, what was more, she told people about it. She was so sure of herself then, and especially sure of him. She wrote a description of him to a friend, borrowing from De Musset.   He is very joyful, and at the same time very gloomy— Disagreeable neighbor, excellent comrade— Extremely light-minded, and yet very affected— Indignantly naïve, nevertheless very blasé— Terribly sincere, and at the same time very sly.   And at the end she wrote, “A real Russian, he is, into the bargain.”   Fat Maksim, she called him then.   “I have never been so tempted to write romances, as when with Fat Maksim.”   And “He takes up too much room, on the divan and in one’s mind. It is simply impossible for me, in his presence, to think of anything but him.”   This was at the very time when she should have been working day and night, preparing her submission for the Bordin Prize. “I am neglecting not only my Functions but my Elliptic Integrals and my Rigid Body,” she joked to her fellow mathematician, Mittag-Leffler, who persuaded Maksim that it was time to go and deliver lectures in Uppsala for a while. She tore herself from thoughts of him, from daydreams, back to the movement of rigid bodies and the solution of the so-called mermaid problem by the use of theta functions with two independent variables. She worked desperately but happily, because he was still in the back of her mind. When he returned she was worn out but triumphant. Two triumphs—her paper ready for its last polishing and anonymous submission; her lover growling but cheerful, eagerly returned from his banishment and giving every indication, as she thought, that he intended to make her the woman of his life.   Excerpted from Family Furnishings by Alice Munro. Wonderful By Robert C Ross I've been lucky enough to read three previous collections of Munro's stories -- some of the characters populate my mind while I try to think of something important to write about this great story teller. This collection is marvelous -- I spent six days treasuring them, reading some of them aloud, re-reading many passages just to be sure I wasn't missing some of the nuances. Southern Ontario must be a wonderful place if so many interesting people live there -- or is it just Alice Munro herself? Her story about a husband trying to find ways to make his wife happy as dementia took hold resonated strongly; it captured exactly my thinking as I hung a bird feeder 20 feet above the ground during my wife's final illness. It could have been me.By all means, try at least one of Munro's stories, from this collection or one of the earlier collections. Her voice is so clear, so honest, so real -- even if you don't care for that story, you will read the work of a great master.Robert C. RossSeptember 2014

JEFFREY MCMAHON My three favorite North American short story writers are John Cheever, Tobias Wolff, and Alice Munro. Of the three, Munro’s stories are a bigger challenge. Often her plot points are elliptical. She slowly and leisurely lets her genius unfold her sprawling stories, often close to 40 pages long, piece by piece, so that her style can present a challenge to one’s patience. But the patience pays off because more than Cheever and Wolff, Munro has this brilliant and rare gift to make a 30-40-page short story feel as if you’ve immersed yourself in a life with a sense of completeness that you could only imagine with a 400-page novel. If you’re new to Munro, you might open this 600-page book and begin with some of her more accessible stories first:“My Mother’s Dream”: An unusual point of view of a girl thinking back to her being a baby and almost dying after her father dies and family and friends converge on the grieving mother. It’s almost as if the first-person narrator, clearly too young as an infant to grasp the details of this period, gleans what she knows from family and friends when she gets into her teens.“Family Furnishings”: A story about social class and the “city” vs. the “country,” this tale is about a larger than life character, the narrator’s older cousin Alfrida, who lives in the big city where she creates a squeaky-clean person as an advice columnist. The disparity between her newspaper persona and her gimlet-eyed cynical self is not only funny but is central to the story’s theme about the loss of innocence.“The Bear Came Over the Mountain”: A story of a professor and his wife who succumbs to dementia and the complex, knotty love they have for each other even after the wife is institutionalized.“Runaway”: Perhaps my favorite Munro story, this is about a mother who loses the connection with her daughter, a convert to a religious cult.“Dimension”: Perhaps the most horrifying of all the stories as it deals with a brutal domestic crime, this story addresses something terrifying in the male psyche as it looks at the aftermath of a mother who has survived an unspeakable act of violence done to her family. Like the story “Runaway,” it is a masterpiece and gives you the sense of having read a novel in just 35 pages or so.This book belongs in the literary Hall of Fame, and if you don’t have them yet, you’ll want to add John Cheever’s collected stories and Tobias Wolff’s collected stories Our Story Begins to your shelf.

Shtulman Like many other readers, I have always been in awe of Alice Munro, whose short stories are just so well-crafted that each of them sparkles like a little gem.In collection after collection, her strength has always been taking ordinary human lives and extricating that one moment of revelation. In just a few beautifully written sentences, she’s able to define a person in a totally original way.Take this description, from The Bear Came Over The Mountain: “Getting close to Marian would present a different problem. It would be like biting into a litchi nut. The flesh with its oddly artificial allure, its chemical taste and perfume, shallow over the extensive seed, the stone.”Now this Nobel Laureate has assembled some of her most memorable stories from 1995-2014, with a forward from Jane Smiley. And it gives this reader yet one more reason to rejoice. In the words of Ms. Smiley, “Munro…has made of the short story something new, using precision of language and complexity of emotion to cut out the relaxed parts of the novel and focus on the essence of transformation.”These are stories to savor, brimming with life and recreating the definition of what a short story is all about. Sometimes, she courageously turns the spotlight on her own life: The View from Castle Rock, for example, finds her mining her family history and meshing imagination and fact…the eponymous Family Furnishings reveals a young writer who steals the poignant, personal and painful history of an eccentric aunt to further her craft.Nor is she afraid to mine emotions: the lengths that a husband will go to give his memory-impaired wife a gift (and, in ways, an apology for his philandering) in The Bear Came Over The Mountain…the cruel alliances of young girls in the drowning of a disabled child in the haunting Child’s Play…the unbreakable connection between Doree and her “criminally insane” husband who murders their children because he is the only one who can truly relate to what has been lost.I loved the opportunity to revisit old favorites and discovered ones that have eluded me. This is an important and marvelous book that should be “must reading” for any literary reader.

97 of 97 people found the following review helpful. excellent for a beginner like me By BobbyT Excellent for a beginner like me. I have hobby skills, but no carving skills. This book provided excellent advice to get me started. For instance: Do not but buy a kit of tools; buy these (specific) tools to get you started. Buy high quality tools. Buy and WEAR a safety glove....one has no idea how razor sharp these tools are ...and MUST be to enjoy carving. Species of wood to buy and carving characteristics. Carving methods. Sharpening methods. Finishing methods. And , of course, a few projects from extremely basic to hot shot.Know that this book is heavy in hand carving and light on rotary application.I complimented this books on wood chipping, and carving a Blue Teal. I had four projects of various skills going on at one time to keep my interest, apply new learning, and get instant gratification.Highly recommend the book.

It covers a great variety of information in exceptionally clear prose and the numerous photos are fabulous. All in all, this is a once-in-a-lifetime reference book. For example, the 50-page sharpening "chapter" (treatise) is a masterpiece of practical, useful tips on bringing out the best in your tools. No needless fluff, no pitching of over-priced gadgets, nothing but good, solid information about sharpening properly and with a minimum of expense, time and trouble. Not interested in a pair of $100 diamond stones? No problem; the author describes which grits of wet-dry paper will do the same job- for a whopping $2- and how to use them so they won't damage your tools. Problems with a gouge not reaching into the corners? Here's how to re-shape it properly. Etc, etc, etc; the sharpening chapter is absolutely amazing! Each and every other chapter is similarly thorough and wonderfully practical, and I couldn't be more pleased or impressed. The sample projects are well chosen and make me want to start several of them immediately. Thank you ever so much, Mr. Ellenwood, for such a fine encyclopedia of all things carving-related! Your book will undoubtedly cause generations of carvers to enjoy their hobby a great deal more, and you are to be commended.

Everett helped me understand the different kinds of woodcarving, the tools required and sharpening systems available. Importantly, he provides a pro's and con's comparison of the different techniques that proved very helpful in generating an understanding of what is required.By the time I started meeting other woodcarvers at clubs and shows, I had a good working knowledge of what I wanted to do and what I needed. Plus, I had a good understanding of the language of the woodcarving art. This guide helped me make the best choices for the tools I needed to get started.

The part I found disturbing was some grammar and word choice errors that resulted in contradictory statements. They could confuse a newbie who is not familiar with these techniques.

Great for Amateurs as well as Experienced Photographers By Nathan Isaac I have been an amateur photographer for years and I would have loved to have had a guide like this when I was getting started. Even with my experience I was still able to get a lot from this book. Very nice information on lighting and angles that I found most interesting.

On an oppressively hot Monday in August of 1966, a student and former marine named Charles Whitman hauled a footlocker of guns to the top of the University of Texas tower and began firing on pedestrians below. Monday, Monday follows three students caught up in the massacre: Shelly, who leaves class and walks directly into the path of the bullets, and two cousins, Wyatt and Jack, who heroically rush from their classrooms to help the victims.

This searing day marks the beginning of a relationship that will entangle these three young people in a forbidden love affair, an illicit pregnancy, and a vow of silence that will span forty years. Reunited decades after the tragedy, Shelly, Wyatt, and Jack will be thrown back once more to the event that changed their lives, and confronted with the lingering power of a secret none of them are ready to reveal. With Monday, Monday, "Elizabeth Crook has written an extraordinary novel-an eloquent love story born from an act of random violence, a tale of destruction and redemption" (Sarah Bird).

Monday, Monday: A Novel, by Elizabeth Crook

From Booklist This intense novel opens with a horrific scene depicting one of the first mass shootings in U.S. history, when Charles Whitman killed 17 students at the University of Texas at Austin in 1966. Shelly, a freshman, is grievously wounded by the sniper’s bullet and convinced she will bleed out on the searing concrete plaza, where she lies surrounded by the dead. But two cousins, Jack and Wyatt, come to her rescue. That singular, surreal encounter binds them together over decades as Shelly and the married Wyatt engage in a profound and passionate love affair, which produces a child. Jack and his wife adopt the child and generously welcome Shelly into their lives, while Wyatt moves to Provincetown, where his art career takes off. Even as Shelly finds love again with a smart and generous man, she is still tethered to her firstborn child and haunted by her secret love affair. Although the plot of Crook’s fourth novel (after The Night Journal, 2007) sometimes loses its way after its potent opening, overall this is a vivid portrayal of resolve in the face of great tragedy. --Joanne Wilkinson

Review

“This rapturous novel starts with one of the most heinous shootings in history, yet every page shines with life. Crook follows three students who endured the tragedy as they grapple with the past, struggle to navigate their futures, and discover that who and what saves us is nothing like what you imagine. Brilliantly realized and so vivid the novel seems to virtually breathe, Monday, Monday is a stunning achievement.” ―Caroline Leavitt, New York Times bestselling author of Is This Tomorrow and Pictures of You

“[E]loquent. . . Monday, Monday opens with a random, hideous act, but thankfully the novel isn't about that moment or the gunman. The shooting sets in motion an entire lifetime of relationships; from an act of violence springs love, friendship, loss, forgiveness and survival. . . Crook's writing shimmers with life. . . [The story] explores the complex messiness of being human and the ways in which even the best intentions can create consequences both hurtful and beautiful. It's intense and emotional, but never maudlin. . . The scenery looms large, but this is story painted on a canvas much larger than the state. Crook has created a gorgeous, worthy and entirely believable read.” ―San Antonio Express-News

“[Monday, Monday] is rich in detail and grand in scope. . . the emotional journey shown in the novel remains honest, and deeply human.” ―Bustle

“Authentic. . . harrowing. . . makes us believe the characters were there. . . Crook's exploration of Whitman's massacre and its lingering effects will have relevance for years to come.” ―Dallas Morning News

“This is a vivid portrayal of resolve in the face of great tragedy.” ―Booklist

“Framing a story in the context of calamity--in this instance, mass murder--invites both sensationalism and sentimentality; there have been few memorable successes, Jonathan Safran Foer's Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and Wally Lamb's The Hour I First Believed among them. Add Crook's latest to the plus side of the list….confident and lyrical as it smartly engages terror and its aftermath.” ―Kirkus (starred review)

“Love, loss, redemption, forgiveness--all are expertly drawn in a narrative that is so very authentic and generous. Crook skillfully weaves together several compelling stories through her close attention to the Texas setting. VERDICT The sensitively explored themes of adoption and coping with violence should create interest in this rich and satisfying tale.” ―Library Journal

“The tale unwinds like an examination of the ripple effect. . . As readers, we have the benefit of sitting in the sand and watching them break on the shoreline. . . This story is the antithesis to the diagram published in the pages of Time magazine shortly after the shooting. Crook forsakes the aerial view and brings your cheek right on down to the scalding pavement.” ―Austin Chronicle

“[An] intensely imagined novel. . . The story unfurls simply and smoothly, with a quiet insistence much like the path the characters will take. Crook renders Shelly's interior life delicately and fully, and artfully conveys her many moments of panic and anguish.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Beautifully written. . . The book is a complex tale about overcoming fear and the risks and power of love. . . And it is the story of the compromises we all make to get by in this imperfect world. Part of what makes this book so compelling is the open and tender way each character is honestly but lovingly portrayed. . . A wonderful book that will make you cry, but also uplift you.” ―BookPage

“Elizabeth Crook has written an extraordinary novel--an eloquent love story born from an act of random violence, a tale of destruction and redemption. It's about making a whole life out of a damaged one, and about holding on and letting go. The characters are as real as people you know; their story is subtle, startling, and wise.” ―SARAH BIRD, author of The Yokota Officers Club and Above the East China Sea

“Monday, Monday begins by throwing us into the midst of one of the worst mass murders in American history, a scene painted with such harrowing exactitude that it leaves you wondering how the characters can possibly survive and how the author can possibly sustain such a high level of narrative momentum and emotional insight. And yet Elizabeth Crook pulls it off. This is a brilliant and beautiful book.” ―STEPHEN HARRIGAN, author of The Gates of the Alamo and Remember Ben Clayton

“In Monday, Monday, Elizabeth Crook uses vivid, gripping prose and in-depth historical research to shed light on one of the darkest moments in Texas history... by detailing the fictional lives of three survivors caught in the crosshairs.” ―The Rivard Report

So I don't know why I expected a sort of true-crime look at the Texas Tower shooter of 1966.The first chapter opens with the shooting, with the focus on three specific victims. As the story progresses, we are swept into Shelly's life. She has survived the shooting, but she has been physically and emotionally changed by the event. Her rescuers, Wyatt and Jack, are also forever changed. We follow these three as they move through their lives, post-trauma. It is hard to throw off the nightmares caused by that day. It is hard to trust others to talk to freely. It is hard to be around people who don't know whether to mention the shooting or pretend it didn't happen.Years go by. A love affair begins. A love affair ends. But a baby is born. She means the world to her adoptive parents. She means the world to the mother who decided to give her away. More years pass, and there are highs and lows, doubts, recriminations, what if's. Crook takes us into the heart of not only the three main characters but of the ancillary characters as well. Secrets beget distrust. Wyatt, Jack, and Shelly find that keeping mum about their lives does not work very well when the new generation begins asking questions.Elizabeth Crook makes every incident and every moment fraught with emotion. The characters do enjoy happy times, but they carry a burden of survivor's guilt and a burden of their own decisions about their lives.MONDAY, MONDAY is a page-turner with an inciting incident drenched in blood and pain. The books tells truths of the human condition without putting rose-colored glasses on the reader's perceptions. A deeply felt and amazing read.

Brilliant Account of a Mass Shooting By asiana With all of the mass shootings which have occurred within the last few years, many do not remember the massacre which took place in August, 1961 when Charles Whitman, a former Marine, stood at the top of the University of Texas Tower and started to shoot at those below. When he finished, there were 16 people dead and 32 wounded. This fictional account of the tragedy follows the lives of three of the victims: Shelly, an average girl who was shot while going to a drugstore and two cousins, Jack and Wyatt, who rushed to save her, Jack being seriously injured. Their emotional and physical lives are forever linked over a 40 year span including happiness, tragedy and secrets. The book has an incredible amount of detail and the research makes Texas "come alive." I would recommend this to those who enjoy historical fiction.

By Ms Winston MINOR SPOILER I think "Monday Monday" has a great deal to offer readers -- even the ones who are not old enough to remember the day that Charles Whitman climbed to the top of the Tower at the University of Texas at Austin and shot 17 people to death. As the front piece in the ARC I read remind us, it was the first mass shooting at a campus in our history. Now, unfortunately, school shootings all the way down to the elementary school level have become more and more common, but they still have the power to shock and horrify us.In her novel about the shooting and its aftermath, author Elizabeth Crook follows the lives of three students who survive and whose lives are forever complicated over a 40 year period. Shelly, Wyatt, and Jack (the latter two being cousins) go though many life-altering events, including an unwanted pregnancy that estranges Shelly from her parents and complicates the relationship with the two cousins. The dialog is well written and realistic, as are descriptive passages, particularly the shooting itself. The voices of the characters can be heard clearly and they are true individuals, and not just place holders in the story. At the end, without giving the resolution of the threads of the story away, Shelly goes back to the University and spends time musing about the day that everything changed for her, Wyatt, Jack, the 17 dead and the 32 wounded, and Whitman himself. Taken with the rest of the story, it is a resolution of sorts where Shelly makes a type of peace with her past. Very touching, and it reminds us that years later these types of acts still resonate with the survivors.

By Corie Very helpful in organizing all my tasks especially with my current work as I am constantly asked to do new tasks when I am not even done with the rest. I liked how organized everything is now thanks to this quick guide! The discussion about GTD (Getting Things Done) and sorting out tasks before you've even began to weed out the unnecessary to the ones that can be done in 2 minutes or otherwise delegate was extremely helpful. I also did not realize the clutter it causes when I put everything into a calendar. Now my calendar looks neat and I don’t stress about deadlines. Never new OneNote could be so helpful in delegating tasks and I can add just about anything to my documents and files which is saves me the hassle of finding the needed files later.

So like some people before becoming a business owner, I never utilized half of the things on my PC, esp. OneNote. Thank goodness for Jack Ecko and this User Guide because I was drowning in invoices and sticky notes not to mention all my crazy list. Now Im 100% organized and I have this book to thank!! My favorite part was it was user friendly, never did I have to go back and read something a million times to understand it. I would recommend.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. This book is a savior! Read it, and you'll know it! By Cate Collins I've been having OneNote in my laptop for years now. But, all I did was ignore it. Why? Basically, I have no idea on how to use it or even its purpose. Now, this book has saved me! It's kinda funny that all this time, that one thing I've been ignoring is the one thing that I've been needing. Instructions provided in this book is super easy to understand and follow. Well, in fact as I am reading it, I am performing each step on the side. My OneNote is now at work! Finally, it already gained a purpose to me. I even gained a new baby in my laptop. Love it!
