The Nativity, by Géraldine Elschner

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—The story of the birth of Jesus is retold in simple, large text alongside the artwork of early Renaissance master Giotto di Bondone (known simply as Giotto). The art on the opposite of each page spread depicts each major aspect of the Christmas story, from the arrival of the angel Gabriel during the announcement of the Incarnation to the Holy Family's flight into Egypt. Readers will be drawn to the gold foil artwork on the halos of the angels, Mary, Joseph, and Baby Jesus. Readers will relate to this special bond between a child and their mother: "And she would always be with her son…Always until the end." The last page brings the reader in with a close-up of the hand of Baby Jesus holding one of Mary's fingers. VERDICT Some young readers might find the Giotto paintings a bit distancing, but others will find their glory to be a fine accompaniment to the classic story.—Diane Olivo-Posner Los Angeles Public Library

Review "A poignant retelling of the Christmas story." —Megan Cox Gurdon, Wall Street Journal

Although the Giotto paintings are lovely, I don't know how well children will relate to them. I also don't like Giotto's nativity pictures because Joseph always looks like such a sad sack.

By any measure, she is a success. By any measure that is, except her own. Ivy Livingstone has entrée into Washington DC’s political elite, lives in an exclusive neighborhood and sends her son to a sought-after private school. But her beautiful life is a gilded cage. She is independent, but alone. And unfortunately, very few men are confident enough to believe they are in Ivy’s league. Eli Thomason has all the confidence in the world, except when it comes to his own judgment about women. And his attraction to Ivy Livingstone proves him right. She is everything he shouldn’t want: a woman above his station and beyond his means. He overreached once before and still lives with the heartbreaking consequences, so why does he find it so difficult to leave Ivy alone? And if their own baggage isn’t enough, Ivy and Eli have to contend with circumstances around them that seem to confirm their worst fear: that the bond they’re beginning to build can’t possibly last.

Ivy's League, by Nia Forrester

From the Author From 'Ivy's League':                  For months now, she had been reason enough to make Eli want to roll out of bed in the morning and get Zion to school on time. Like him, she was part of the first wave, getting there each morning no later than seven-thirty, pulling up in the delicious dark blue BMW 740i and exiting one long leg at a time. She was chocolate-brown and had a nature-defying combination of slender limbs with ass for days. The first time he saw her, Eli could have sworn he drooled a little bit. Who's that? he'd asked Zion, casually, nudging his son in the shoulder. Jaden's Mommy. Yeah, but what's Jaden's last name? Eli asked, exasperated. I don't know. He's in Miss Turner's room. Does he have a daddy? Everybody has a daddy, Daddy. So that was that. Eli was left to stare and wonder. Every morning for months now, he'd pull in and hope to see her, striding across the parking lot with that stately walk of hers, like an Ashanti warrior princess, dusky-skinned and beautiful, legs glistening, head held high. She rarely spoke to other parents, and didn't seem to notice the daggers that many of the other women shot at her, because though her walk was confident, her eyes were not. She kept her eyes slightly downcast much of the time, like she was hoping to pass by unnoticed. As though there was any chance of that. The other fathers noticed her too, glancing out of the corner of their eyes, probably straining their necks not to look. And they couldn't look, because Woodmore wasn't that kind of place. They were all supposed to be fine, Upstanding Christian Brothers, only noticing their wives. Eli, on the other hand, couldn't give a shit. He didn't have a wife, so he felt perfectly entitled to stare. Once or twice their eyes met, and she looked quickly away, before he had a chance to smile or anything; and he regretted that the setting wasn't different because he sure enough would have stepped to her. As it was, he was doomed to simply looking, until and unless they crossed paths elsewhere. This morning though, just as he was leaving Mrs. Weathers and she was coming in with her son, trotting a little as though late, the opportunity presented itself. One trot was misplaced and down she went. Truth be told, it was as ungraceful a fall as Eli had ever witnessed, like a baby might fall, but he didn't care. He was too distracted by the sight of her exposed behind, dark skin barely covered by black lace. And then her son was crouching next to her, deftly covering his mother's bum. Good thing too, since Eli--and he was sure most of the men present--was in danger to developing a very hard to explain, though perfectly natural masculine response. Getting his wits about him, Eli rushed over to help her, but she hastily brushed away all offers, clearly mortified. Everyone else moved along quickly out of deference to her obvious embarrassment, but Eli had no intention of letting this chance pass him by. They exchanged a few words, which he would have liked to have made more of, then her son rushed her off. He watched her enter the school building, once or twice putting a hand up to adjust her hair and see that it was in place, gestures that betrayed how shaken she still was by the fall. But with her pretty white skirt against long dark legs, the light coral shade of her blouse contrasting with smooth arms, she still looked perfect to him.

About the Author Nia Forrester lives and writes in Washington DC where, by day, she is a public policy attorney and by night, she crafts woman-centered fiction that examines the complexities of life, love and the human condition.

Ivy is successful and upwardly mobile with a son, whereas Eli is a hardworking brother also raising a son but nowhere in his mind or in actuality the same economic category as Ivy. The thing is none of that matters to her, but matters greatly to him. After a tentative start the two grow in desire and feelings and it was lovely to read the evolution. But Eli continues to struggle with history and his perception of what Ivy 'should' be about. The story is familiar yet fresh and Ms. Forrester gives it a nice cadence that flows. I enjoyed the evolution of the characters even the bumps... I also enjoyed that it read like life... I highly recommend Ivy's League for great storytelling and a book that reads like looking in a friend's window.Angelia Vernon MENCHAN

That's it. It wasn't bad but it wasn't really good either. A basic story no real character build up or story development. That was kind of disappointing considering that Nia has always done an exceptional job at developing a detail story and drawing you in with every emotion. Not so much this time. Ivy & Eli was soon forgotten once I finished the last page and there was no desire to know more about them. I'm waiting for the next book from Nia that pulls you in like 'Commitment' or the 'Mistress, Wife, Mother' series. When she made you hate the character Keisha in one book but love her by the end of her own series. Or the complexities of Tracy the beautiful vixen that you love to hate. Or Chris Scaife, how difficult he was but yet you desired to have him for yourself.... So this story was just meh for me in comparison to the previous books that I loved.

Recently on her blog, the author described this book as "The Book Where Nothing Happens" (click here to see what she means: http://niaforrester.com/2015/09/20/th...). But this book is so much more! This was the book where a real woman meets a real man and they experience real things in a very real, but new relationship. We have Ivy who is a who has a successful career and is sort of a single mother, she then meets Eli who is a blue collar single father who is struggling financially to give his son all the things in life he never had. From the very beginning Eli was not only skeptical of the very idea of a real relationship with Ivy, he approached it expecting it to fail - whether he saw it that way or not. Ivy on the other head, made it very clear that she was his and she was all in, and I believe her assurance and confidence in the relationship is what scared Eli. Also, Eli was always caught up in the financial difference between them, it made him really uncomfortable. Now, I clutched my pearls and held on to them when Ms. Ivy laid it all out in the streets for Mr. Eli and told him:Eli, it's time to man up or back off. All while making sure she DID NOT break eye contact with him.The supporting cast of Jaden (Ivy's son), Gavin (Ivy's ex-husband and Jaden's father), Zion (Eli's son) and Stacy (Eli's ex-wife and Zion's "mother"). Now I mention these folks because (particularly the exes) have so much influence, albeit without their knowledge, of the possible failure and/or success of what is Ivy's and Eli's relationship. Some of these folks were like old scars, some new revelations, but they all were pivotal and worth getting to know. Not one character felt out of place or unnecessary in this book, even down to the mothers and best friends.I recently discovered this author and have not been disappointed in her. Her writing style is that in which you really feel connected and familiar with the characters and you hate to see them go when it's all over. There were some grammatical errors throughout the book, and if these are fixed, I can totally see this being a five star story without a doubt.Instead of it being a book where not much happens, it was a book where a man met a woman and they worked through some things to start a real relationship.

Read Online Ebook Beauty Is a Wound, by Eka Kurniawan

The English-language debut of Indonesia's rising star.

The epic novel Beauty Is a Wound combines history, satire, family tragedy, legend, humor, and romance in a sweeping polyphony. The beautiful Indo prostitute Dewi Ayu and her four daughters are beset by incest, murder, bestiality, rape, insanity, monstrosity, and the often vengeful undead. Kurniawan’s gleefully grotesque hyperbole functions as a scathing critique of his young nation’s troubled past:the rapacious offhand greed of colonialism; the chaotic struggle for independence; the 1965 mass murders of perhaps a million “Communists,” followed by three decades of Suharto’s despotic rule.      Beauty Is a Wound astonishes from its opening line: One afternoon on a weekend in May, Dewi Ayu rose from her grave after being dead for twenty-one years....  Drawing on local sources―folk tales and the all-night shadow puppet plays, with their bawdy wit and epic scope―and inspired by Melville and Gogol, Kurniawan’s distinctive voice brings something luscious yet astringent to contemporary literature.

Beauty Is a Wound, by Eka Kurniawan

Review “An unforgettable, all-encompassing epic… Upon finishing the book, the reader will have the sense of encountering not just the history of Indonesia but its soul and spirit. This is an astounding, momentous book.” (Publishers Weekly (Starred Review))“Very striking.” (Tariq Ali)“Without a doubt the most original, imaginatively profound, and elegant writer of fiction in Indonesia today: its brightest and most unexpected meteorite. Pramoedya Ananta Toer has found a successor.” (Benedict Anderson - The New Left Review)“An epic picaresque that’s equal parts Canterbury Tales and Mahabharata―exuberantly excessive and captivating. Huge ambition, abundantly realized.” (Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review))“A vivacious translation of a comic but emotionally powerful Indonesian novel.” (PEN America)“Kurniawan’s story of an undead woman had morphed into the story of modern Indonesia, an epic novel critics are more wont to compare to One Hundred Years of Solitude and The Canterbury Tales.” (Sydney Morning Herald)“The final wonder of Beauty Is a Wound is how much pure liveliness and joy there is mixed up with the pain, as if the verdancy of the author's imagination was racing to cover a million corpses with fresh green tendrils.” (The Saturday Paper)“As translated by Annie Tucker, Kurniawan’s prose is lucid and occasionally lyrical but never showy.” (Anthony Domestico - SF Chronicle)“Kurniawan does not merely traffic skillfully in magic realism; his Halimunda ― like García Márquez’s Macondo and Faulkner’s Yoknapatawpha County ― lets him show how the currents of history catch, whirl, carry away and sometimes drown people.” (John Fasman - The New York Times)“Both Man Tiger and Beauty Is a Wound constitute a retort from the present to the dark times, while also acknowledging that the dark times may not yet be over. Against the killings of those years and the collective amnesia used to blank out the fate of the victims―a kind of second death, as it were―Kurniawan’s fiction summons its legions of ghosts.” (Siddhartha Deb - The New Republic)“Gracefully translated by Annie Tucker, the writing is evocative and muscular, with particularly spicy descriptions and some good wry humor.” (Sarah Lyall - The New York Times)“It’s an astonishing, polyphonic epic, a melange of satire, grotesquerie, and allegory that incorporates everything from world history to local folk talks.” (Phillip Pantuso - Brooklyn Magazine)“An arresting portrait of Indonesia’s struggle for nationhood, delights in obscenity: no topic is spared from its bloodthirsty brand of satire.” (Gillian Terzis - The New Yorker)“Refreshingly, Kurniawan puts value on literature as entertainment, and his books are certainly that.” (Deborah Smith - The Guardian)

About the Author Born in 1975, the author of novels, short stories, essays, movie scripts, and graphic novels Eka Kurniawan has been described as “one of the few influential writers in Indonesia” (The Jakarta Post).Annie Tucker is a recipient of a 2013 PEN/Heim Translation Fund Award

44 of 47 people found the following review helpful. Indonesia distilled to perfection. By Pemakan Kangkung I finished reading Beauty is a Wound (Cantik itu Luka translated by Annie Tucker) last week. I am stunned by how well this crazy mishmash of stories reflected the jumble that resides in an enigmatic file in my head labeled “Jawa”. All the professional reviews agree that this is an important, landmark, revolutionary, complex book. I want to explain WHY that is so true. Unless the reader understands the topic—Indonesia, it’s just another vague statement of greatness by reviewers. I would like to explain why this book is really hitting some reader’s nerves and why for others it might be inexplicable.Kurniawan successfully put everything I know and feel about the former Dutch East Indies and today’s West Java in a blender. Then he poured out a tale that is representative of the inexplicable, tight hold Indonesia can have on someone with ties to the Mooi Indie. Reading Beauty is a Wound seemed like a visit to the homeland of my soul, and I am still struggling with just how to review this book for “non-Indonesia proficient” audiences. There is one word in Bahasa Indonesia that I keep repeating. It is “Rasa”. It means feel or taste, or sensation of. And Kurniawan has distilled the “Rasa” of Indonesia. So bear with me as I try to make sense of this momentous jumble in some logical fashion.Translation: The translation is first rate. Nothing is lost in translation, so the book is quite easy to read. There are some Indonesian and Dutch words used for effect, but not enough to cause readers to really slow down. Some terms may confuse a western reader unfamiliar with Indonesia, but you can figure it out from context.Story line: Like Lelaki Harimau (Man Tiger, also by Kurniawan), Beauty is Wound is really a simple ghost story, or perhaps several ghost stories! The main ghost is Dewi Ayu, (literally Goddess Pretty, and of course, an allegory for Mooi Indie, Dutch for the Beautiful Indies). Dewi Ayu, who refused to leave her Indonesian homeland when most Dutch bolted, rises from the grave years later in order to stop another ghost’s long-term curse upon her bastard progeny and their inappropriate husbands and the doomed next generation (all of whom are more allegories for sections of, or forces in, Indonesian society). The book can be read just for the story line.Fractured Time Line: Readers need to learn the reasons for the curse and everyone’s back-story! And do they have back-stories! The interwoven Back Stories give you “The Political and Social History of Indonesia Since Colonial Times.” Kurniawan only lets you learn the important bits of the back-story as they become germane to the tale he is telling. So while the book does progress from Dutch Colonial times to contemporary Indonesia, the structure of the telling is not strictly chronological. We see the reasons for the interwoven time lines in the book when their past comes back to haunt someone. Literally.Violence/Sex/Rape: Wow, there is plenty of sex, war and murder in this book. The violence, while graphic, seems to be exactly at the level I always imagined it to be from other sources and first person tales that I have heard from Indonesian and Dutch witnesses to these events. Indonesia is a huge, insanely diverse country that went through some extremely grim times in the last 100 years. (Watch The Year of Living Dangerously with Mel Gibson, if you want a quick primer in the feel of 1965 Indonesia.) Kurniawan is telling that multifaceted tale in the style of Indonesian folk tales and legends; the descriptions may not be factually correct, but you get the feel of the unsettled atmosphere that existed. All this happens in a coastal fictional locale called, Halimunda. (Halimun is the word for mist! So where this town actually lies is meant to be “foggy.”)In an allegory where a country is a woman, and segments of that country other women, and “forces of evil” keep attacking that country or segments, you have many rape scenes. One could easily summarize major events in Indonesian history by saying, “Once again, Indonesia got screwed.” That’s what Kurniawan is doing. He’s not a crazy sex fiend. He is not advocating that men should treat women like that. He is using it to effect. I often want to start my own tale of Indonesia with the line, “From the day Columbus set off to locate Indonesia to steal her spices, Indonesia kept getting screwed….”So to sum up, we have an important, epic, satirical, adult, historical fiction, ghost allegory rife with symbolism that approximates the History of the Republic of Indonesia.Suspend all your disbelief, jettison all expectations and jump right in. The Water is Fine! While I am screaming, “YES! I got to wallow mentally in what I have been studying for 40 years! The post-colonial period of the Republic of Indonesia,” some of you are asking, “Huh?” To be honest, this is a book written for those familiar with (ok, really BEYOND familiar with, perhaps utterly steeped in) recent Indonesian history. Both POLITICAL and SOCIAL history during the latter half of the 20th Century and specifically those formative and determinative events that happened on the Island of Java since about 1940. The Japanese occupation, the three-way guerilla war for independence, the 1965 failed coup and its murderous anti-communist aftermath, and the perhaps less violent, but oppressive decades of the New Order, and then the 1990’s reformasi and recent history that perhaps brought an to the end of the curse…Oh, and you might need a basic understanding of the major groups in Indonesian society. The Indos—mixed-race Dutch (or Japanese, or any other Eurasian mix). The PKI—Communist Party members or supporters (farmers, workers). Muslims—Intellectual liberals and/or fundamentalist, but rarely communist, and often protesting college students. Chinese-Indonesians—the Business Men perhaps allied to or exploited by Suharto. The Indonesian Military—was KNIL, then PETA, then ABRI, now TNI, has a “Dual Function” in that it actually created the state, and was very much involved in politics and business. And the criminal gangs or Preman—think Indonesian Mafia! Unity in Diversity! Yah!If the last paragraph confused you, I would suggest reading a few Wikipedia pages on the Dutch East Indies and then the Republic of Indonesia from 1947 to the present before trying to read this book. Why? Because this complex book is an extended allegory for the birth of and struggle to mature of the Republic of Indonesia. If you want more understanding of recent Indonesian history, read Indonesian Politics Under Suharto: The Rise and Fall of the New Order, by Michael Vatikiotis. There is something peculiar and cyclical in the history of Indonesia and Kurniawan maximizes that. The more you know about Indonesia and its people, the more you will understand and the more you will get the many jokes and scathing political comments in this book. But Beauty is a Wound will teach a reader new to Indonesia plenty about what really happened in Java after the Japanese invaded. And it is not a pretty picture. Here’s the mystery about Indonesia, those people who love her, love her WITH all her faults, and she has plenty. There is still rural poverty and city slums, but there is incredible art and creativity, there are astounding natural riches, there was political suppression, but there is a high literacy rate and huge middle class, there are huge environmental issues, there is beauty beyond belief. That’s what makes Indonesia interesting and creates that “perasaan,” that weird sensation of Indonesia that Kurniawan captures. There is something addicting about Indonesia. Once you have been to Indonesia, most people want to go back. And I bet that is why Kurniawan made Dewi Ayu a prostitute that men wanted to return to. Read this book and you will also know this Beautiful Indonesia—one you will never learn about in any school. But the real prize for reading this book is seeing just how Kurniawan actually puts all this together into a cohesive, entertaining tale! And Yes, he does that. I read this thick book in a few days. I did not want to put it down. I am obsessed with Indonesia. I already know what Indo means, I already know what dog eater connotes, I know what Belanda and totok mean. But that’s because I had a Belanda stepfather who was born a totok in Bandung, West Java and the history of much of this book was his personal heartrending story as well. And the most significant other person is my life is a multilayered Orang Sunda from West Java. For an American, I am about as familiar with Indo-Dutch, Indos and Indonesians as I could possibly get without being born to it myself. This book should be on the reading list at every University Asian Studies Program in the English Speaking World. This book tells all sides of these horrendous events. It is not a dry political textbook by some Western political academic looking down at Indonesia as a specimen of military oppression of democracy or as a petri dish of surprising economic development. It is not slanted toward the military, the PKI, or any one group. It is not apologizing or apologetics for any of those horrid events. It does not worry about who was right or wrong or if it was the fault of the Dutch, the Japanese, the Military, the PKI, the passive population, Sukarno, or Suharto. Indonesia and her people just struggle through 50 years of violence and social and creative suppression. This book is important because it may mark the absolute end of the events it spears so well. The book’s existence may mean Indonesia has reached a point at which Indonesian civil society, democratic rule, and intellectual freedom and creativity are relatively safe from being screwed again.Indonesia, and particularly for me, West Java where fictional Halimunda seems to be located, have some kind of magic power that permeates your soul and heart. Once she really gets her hooks in you, you emotionally live in that “perasaan” forever. If like Dewi Ayu, I was forced to consider leaving the “Indonesia” in my heart, I would, like her, answer, “I’m not going.”

And if I have to tell you, revolution is nothing more than a collective running amok, organized by one particular party”Beauty is a Wound is one of only two (so far) works by Indonesian journalist, writer and designer, Eka Kurniawan that have been translated into English. Twelve days after she gave birth to her fourth daughter (ironically named Beauty), Dewi Ayu, even at fifty-two still the most beautiful and desired prostitute in the Javan city of Halimunda, wrapped herself in a burial shroud and died. Twenty-one years later, she rose from grave, to the shock of the neighbourhood. Her reasons for doing so were not immediately apparent.Kurniawan’s epic tale extends over almost a century and, against the backdrop of Dutch Colonial days and the Japanese wartime occupation through the struggles for independence to the modern day, tells the story of an extended Indonesian family: births, marriages, deaths and everything in between. There is plenty of humour and some sweet romance, but this family (like many in Indonesia) also suffers its share of tragedies, or perhaps even moreso. There is quite a lot of violence, again an accurate reflection of life in those times in that country: rapes, massacres, murders and beatings are described in a very matter-of-fact style.Kurniawan’s tale demonstrates how corruption, propaganda, the power of petty despots, the impotence of the Police force and control of the media are all accepted aspects of everyday life in Indonesia. The attitude of those petty despots is summarised thus: “’Comrade Kliwon … is quite sympathetic and works hard to remedy the misfortunes of others….sometimes I think he’s the only person in this city who looks toward the future with hope.’ ‘That’s what communists are like. Pathetic people who don’t realise this world is destined to be the most rotten place imaginable. That’s the only reason God promised heaven, as a comfort to the wretched masses’”This is a rambling story that is certainly reminiscent of Garcia Marquez and Rushdie, although, while Rushdie tends to never use two words when three or five will do, Kurniawan is much more succinct. Some elements of the supernatural feature: mainly ghosts and channelling of the dead, and of course, folklore and superstition are commonplace. The prose is quite basic, the dialogue often rather earthy: it is easy to read; a background knowledge of Indonesian history and politics is helpful, but not essential. Translation of this impressive work from the Indonesian has been achieved by Annie Tucker. An original and thought-provoking read. 4.5stars

By Indiranda Kurniawan is definitely a magical realist. I really enjoyed that quality of the work where realistic action can take place and then the fantastic element comes in as though it was usual. The story is also a sprawling saga over a few generations, mainly focussing on one woman's family. My greatest shock and incredible unease is that he writes about the desire men feel for the female characters as rape. His male protagonists often look at a female character and want to `rape her' and this happens with quite a few of the relationships. They start off with rape and end up as something else. I wonder if this is a Muslim concept that doesn't translate comfortably into English. Our authors don't write about natural every day desire in such a brutal and violent way. If there is rape it is then a violent and negative act.

Maggie Sanders might be blind, but she won't invite anyone to her pity party. Ever since losing her sight six months ago, Maggie's rebellious streak has taken on a life of its own, culminating with an elaborate school prank. Maggie called it genius. The judge called it illegal. Now Maggie has a probation officer. But she isn't interested in rehabilitation, not when she's still mourning the loss of her professional-soccer dreams, and furious at her so-called friends, who lost interest in her as soon as she could no longer lead the team to victory. Then Maggie's whole world is turned upside down. Somehow, incredibly, she can see again. But only one person: Ben, a precocious ten-year-old unlike anyone she's ever met.Ben's life isn't easy, but he doesn't see limits, only possibilities. After awhile, Maggie starts to realize that losing her sight doesn't have to mean losing everything she dreamed of. Even if what she's currently dreaming of is Mason Milton, the magnetic lead singer of Maggie's new favorite band, who just happens to be Ben's brother. But when she learns the real reason she can see Ben, Maggie must find the courage to face a once-unimaginable future...before she loses everything she has grown to love.

The One Thing, by Marci Lyn Curtis

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—After losing her eyesight to meningitis, 16-year-old Maggie is angry and bewildered. A rising soccer star, she refuses to adjust to her new life, which includes Merchant's School for the Blind, where an ill-conceived prank lands her on probation. Maggie's parents seem distant, and her friends from school have forgotten about her. Then one afternoon, Maggie slips on the floor, whacking her head in the process. When she regains consciousness, standing over her is Ben, a wise-cracking 10-year-old whom she can actually see. More strangely, Maggie can only see when Ben is with her. After eliminating the possibility that she is in a coma, Maggie bonds with Ben and his family even though she is ignored by his older brother Mason, the lead singer for a local band called The Loose Cannons, who thinks she is pretending to be blind just to get near him. By the time Maggie figures out why she can see only certain people, will it be too late to avert another tragedy and put together the pieces of her broken life? The story is fast-paced, with Maggie's intermittent vision serving as an intriguing mystery. Maggie is a solid, well-developed character and shows tremendous growth in the story. The dialogue and Maggie's inner thoughts are hilarious and provide insight to the challenges anyone, especially a teen, must experience with a life-changing medical event. VERDICT Teens who enjoy stories about people overcoming adversity, complete with a satisfying conclusion, will enjoy this novel.—Anne Jung-Mathews, Plymouth State University, NH

Review "Sometimes lost things are not truly lost, we just have to look for them in new places. The One Thing hits this important note, and the music is beautiful."―Courtney C. Stevens, author of Faking Normal, The Blue-Haired Boy, and The Lies About Truth"Maggie's voice is sharp and quick-witted, and Ben's persistent exuberance provides an excellent foil...Funny, sweet, and hopeful."―Kirkus Reviews

By JustCommonly Amazing...laugh out loud funny, sarcastically snickered, sadly teared, biting my tongue annoyed and tugging my heart warmth. That is what I can say about Marci Lynn Curtis' "The One Thing". I love it. Love it, love it, love it. Need a little more?Marci Lyn Curtis wrote some great dialogue, and funny scenarios in this teen/young adult novel. She gave life to teenage angst and childhood trauma with depth and realistic sarcasm. This is not about romance, though there's some of it, but about finding yourself, even when darkness took over. It is about something out of the darkness that brings you back to you. It's about looking it in a different way, and finding what you need to jump out of the darkness, and again, back to you.I love Maggie and Ben. All of it - from the interaction, their characters, their thoughts and their journey within these 336 pages. Maggie, a typical angry and sarcastic teenager. Ben, an adorable and funny 10 year old. It's not about romance, but about life, about happiness, about finding your thing. The one thing. What is yours?Another element of the plot I found natural and worth mentioning is the relationship between Maggie and her parents. Adults, particularly parents are human too. They make mistakes too and they sometime need their children to help them see. Sometimes it doesn't go as you wish, but that is life, and the journey is what makes it alive. If I didn't make it clear in the first paragraph, I'll make it clear here. I love this book. This will be a hit. This is a book I will buy (Release date September 8, 2015). This is a book I will gift. It reminds me a little of John Green's books, but a different kind of mood. If you love John Green's books, you'll love "The One Thing". If you don't, you'll still love it for the sweet, the sour, the bitter and the cravings of salt, not to mention a little spiciness a good book has.NOTE: I received a complimentary e-copy of this book from the publisher, Disney-Hyperion Books through Net Galley for an honest review.UPDATE: Stay tune for Just Commonly's first author interview with none other than Marci Lyn Curtis!! I'm so excited, plus an author giveaway, courtesy of Marci. Scheduled for September 9th. Stay tune!http://justcommonly.blogspot.com/2015/09/author-interview-marci-lyn-curtis-of.html

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Emotional and heartwarming story about friendship and living with disabilities By Brandi Leigh Kosiner 4.5 stars I wanted to read The One Thing because I am drawn to books about teens with disabilities or illnesses, and blindness has always been one that caught my attention even more so. I think it would be so hard to have seen and then lose your vision, because you know what the world used to look like for you, and it changes so much. You have to learn so many skills over again, and you would realize how much you used to take for granted. The main character is six months out from losing her sight, and she is trying to adjust to the new school for the blind that she is a part of. She got in huge court kind of trouble for a prank so now on top of everything else, she's having to see a probation officer. But as fate would have it that is where she meets charismatic, funny, semiperverted ten year old Ben. And she can see again, but only a certain field of vision around him. He meets her after she falls down in the office, and he starts flirting with her and making jokes. Turns out that Ben has spina bifida and he has to use crutches because of how weak his legs are. And that her vision is only restored when she is near him. At first, she goes along with his invitation to come to his house because she wants the tiny window of sight to stick around, but she ends up liking his company, and his mom's. And turns out that Ben's brother is the lead singer for one of her favorite bands ever. He helps her get perspective and realize that even though soccer, and reading used to be her Thinbg(capitalization Ben's) if it no longer makes her happy, then she needs to find new things in life to love. Ben is a swimmer, and although he has to work hard at it, he challenges himself to beat his own times, and likes the way that he feels when he is in the water. I actually didn't see the reasoning behind her sudden vision returning, but it was an interesting theory. The emotions really had me going, and I loved how much Ben changed Maggie (aka Thera because he thinks she looks like a character in his favorite video game). But it was def on Maggie's own terms. She had to realize that yes, its bad that she can't see anymore, and that it has changed her interests, friendships, and way of life, but that at least she is alive. She can find new interests, or rediscover old ones. That sometimes friendship has awkward moments, but it is worth it to push through and be there for them and let them be there for you. I liked that the romance was there, and went through stages of growth, nothing was easy there, just as much isn't easy for Maggie lately, besides this funny boy who has become so much of her life. The connection with his older brother is a plus. But I also appreciated that it wasn't the whole story, or even the catalyst for Maggie realizing so much and growing so much. Everything wrapped up in such a neat way, and more hopeful and happy that I could hope for with some of the events that went down. I put it down and was pleased and I have been thinking about it all day.Bottom Line: Emotional and heartwarming story about friendship and living with disabilities

By Julie @Books and Insomnia *I received an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thanks to Netgalley and Disney-Hyperion.*I've already read a book with deaf characters and one with a female protagonist who doesn't speak. Now, here's a book with a visually-impaired female MC. I'd say my reading horizon is constantly expanding, especially on books with physically-challenged characters. And hear me, dear readers, because YOU NEED THIS BOOK IN YOUR LIFE! The One Thing is a heartfelt, hilarious, and hopeful debut novel. Marci Lyn Curtis is a new author to watch out for.The One Thing started off really strong. Maggie's personality – with all her glorious snark and wit – was all over the place, you wouldn't miss it. The pacing is really good because the author doesn't drag us through unnecessary chapters. By chapter two, there's Ben already, bringing fresh character and getting the plot rolling. And the story's really interesting! It's contemporary, but there's a supernatural(?) touch to it, owing to the fact that Maggie is blind but suddenly could see one person.I really loved the characters. They're so unique and authentic. Maggie's voice was totally real and spot-on. She's independent and hilarious and really strong despite her disability. What I liked about her is that she doesn't make a big deal out of her blindness. She experienced drastic changes in her life, but she did not dwell on self-pity. Sure, she sort of isolated herself, but Maggie still remained Maggie. Sarcastic, funny and sassy. It was fun being inside her head. I love reading characters like Maggie because this is real teenage voice, people. She's not always kind but admit it, that's how teenagers are. I have no problems with goody good shoes MCs, but I can relate more to characters with bite. And don't get me started with Ben! This kid is just a genuinely good character, I just can't help but love him. He matches Maggie's humor and sarcasm, and he's pretty mature for his age. He's funny and kind and smart. I love this kid. (Did I say that already?) What a heartbreaker. And Mason! He's not the typical book boyfriend. Like what Maggie said, what makes him larger-than-life is that he doesn't try to be larger-than-life. He just is. He's a bit judgmental, though, but I liked how protective he is of Ben. Mason definitely wins at being a big brother. Not to mention that he's in a band. :)Now let's talk about the relationships in this book. I found Maggie and Ben's friendship odd and refreshing because it's not every day that I read a book with this kind of friendship. I don't know about you guys, but when I was 16, I didn't have 10-year-old friends. And that's really nice and cute. I love their banterings, the fact that Maggie learned a lot from Ben and the way she changed because of him. Their friendship is the center of this book, and that's satisfyingly different from romance-focused YA. Speaking of romance, I was kind of meh about it. I mean, I don't mind it being there, but I could also do without it. I liked that it's not insta-love, though, because duh Maggie's blind so there's no love at first sight crap here.Maggie's relationship with her parents, specifically with her mother, was something to read, too. It was painful to see that kind of interaction between a family with a blind daughter. Good thing there's Gramps. He's a cool and funny character too, and I loved how he takes care of Maggie. He's not touchy-feely, but he's caring in his own way. Aww...Other things I'd like to highlight, but won't say much about for fear of being spoilery:* Maggie's character development. It was remarkable. Not only did she learn things about herself, but she also came to terms with her relationships with other people.* When Maggie discovered her Thing. It was pretty awesome and somehow surprising.* That ending! I'd love to gush about the ending, but all I can say about it is that it made me so happy. ^__^Heartwarming and right in the feels! The One Thing had me crying, snorting and grinning like crazy, sometimes all at the same time.I know you get this from me a lot, but seriously, this book goes straight to my favorites list. The One Thing is a mixture of heartbreaking and happy, of friendships and family, of love and passion. With an excellent writing and a story that will tug at your heartstrings, you won't go wrong with this. It is a beautiful book.

By Nicolas Mather I was one of the Top Writers interviewed for this book and working on the project was so eye opening for me in terms of how powerful Quora really is. You forget it when you're a writer but taking a step back, this is a full guide for how to be successful on the platform. Well done. I will be suggesting this book to all the people who ask me about writing on Quora—this is everything you need to know!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The best book to learn about dominating on Quora! By Amazon Customer Full disclaimer, I was one of the first reviewers of draft versions of this book but I went through it a second time to make sure I internalized all of the great tips in here. It’s rare these days to come across a book discussing a website I was previously clueless about, but these guys have done it. I certainly had no idea it was a great way to get traffic or build your brand! The interviews with Quora Top Writers also reveals a lot of hidden insights into how they've managed to make it to the top and get noticed by hundreds of thousands of people. Would definitely recommend this book to anyone who's either new or currently reading / writing on Quora!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Must buy for Quora writers or anyone thinking about writing! By Erin Geyer These guys are awesome. I've spent months writing on quora without much thought or strategy. So far the book is a great read and I highly recommend getting a copy! It's great to read about their success stores. The authors have been there and been successful. MORE importantly... it's great to have real, executable and practical strategies.

I tend to use science fiction books to escape from my normal reading plan and this book provided just that--an escape to a completely different kind of novel. Let me say that the book is published by the author, and this draws me to it even more--that being said it isn't a perfect work like those with the luxury of paid editors. I am not faulting the work for that, because the fact is, this book is a fun read. There is nothing better than to support new authors working hard to get their stuff out there. DS Johnson worked to build a reality that is different from any novel of a similar genre and it paid off. The relationships inside were well developed and pulled you through the novel. From the opening pages, you are ripped from your couch, bed, wherever you are and pulled into strong action, magic, dragons, complex decisions, and a strong female character written well. I will not spoil the book, so read it for yourself.I will say that I checked out the associated website and just thought it was awesome and I am excited to see what this author does in the future!!!

This is the perfect book for all ages. I can't wait to get the next book!!!
