Back in 1947 someone named S.N. Pike â?? we know next to nothing about him â?? published three little pamphlets, each mapping in forensic detail one of Britain's main line rail routes. Now Aurum reissues all three in one handsome volume â?? adding a fourth in the same style to complete the set.

Pike produced booklets on the LNER (the East Coast main line), the LMS (West Coast main line) and the Southern Railway network the Brighton line and all its ramifications) â?? but for some reason he never got around to doing one on the Great Western (the route from Paddington to Devon and Cornwall). What subsequently became of S.N. Pike we don't know. But now Aurum completes the set, to make one nostalgic guide to Britain's railways as they were just after the War.

These books are full of period interest â?? the East Coast line, for example, still goes past Alexandra Park racecourse, and sees a tangle of colliery sidings all the way up through Yorkshire, and passes 20 places where "GPO mail bag catching nets" are erected close to the rails. When today's high speed trains swish to Paris so fast that the landscape beyond is a blur, this delightful book reminds you what once could be seen on a long railway journey.

Little is known about S.N. PIKE. He first published his three Mile by Mile guides in 1947. A facsimile edition of the guides was published by Aurum in 2011.

A facsimile of Stuart Pike's three look-out-of-the-window guides, from 1947 and a fourth that he never got round to publishing. Not a new idea because I have a 1928 page book published by GWR in 1924 for a Paddington to Penzance journey and a 78 page King's Cross to Edinburgh, Inverness and Aberdeen book published by LNER in 1939. Both of these, though, are really guides to the geography and places along the route. Pike took the idea further by combining the landscape comments with a lot of technical information: speeds; gradients; mileage; journey times; cuttings; tunnels; water troughs: speed restrictions and more.Pike, in the Author's Note for his third 1947 booklet, mentions a forthcoming GWR one covering Paddington to Penzance and Bristol. It was never published but is in the book through the research by Matt Thompson and route maps created by Reg Piggott. Both used rail information from 1947. The maps, being newly created look marvelous and it's a pity that Pike's from decades ago are slightly rough in comparison. Incidentally the page numbers are missing from the LMS booklet (Euston to Liverpool and St Pancras to Manchester, Nottingham and Leeds).You can still travel, by rail, along the routes in the book but so much has changed since just after the war years, especially the disappearance of so many minor stations. One thing that hasn't are the roads that go under or over the tracks, especially in country areas and these might be the only thing that has remained constant. I recently spent a pleasant hour or so following the route from Waterloo to Southampton on Southern using the maps in the book and the AA Close-up Britain (AA Atlases).'Mile by mile' is the ideal title for the armchair rail fan capturing the feel of the railways when they really meant something to Britain in the years after the war.+++LOOK INSIDE THE BOOK by clicking 'customer images' under the cover.

About the Author John Rinaldi, is Chief Strategist, Business Development Manager and CEO of Real Time Automation (RTA) in Brookfield WI. Great Resource for Industrial & Building Automation Technical People By WPL This book is a great resource for designers, engineers, and technicians in the automation field since Modbus is used throughout the world and understanding how to apply it is important for any person involved in the automation industry. The author describes the Modbus communications protocol in easy to understand terms and this is why I will wrote the forward for this book. Modbus is used in a wide range of applications including industrial automation, process control, building automation, transportation, energy, and remote monitoring. Virtually any type of sensor and controller devices can be found that incorporates Modbus networking including programmable logic controllers (PLC), process controllers, process instruments, process sensors, PID controllers, motor drives, energy meters, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, programmable automation controllers (PAC), discrete sensors, valves, and many other embedded devices.

I then tried to analyze why I love him so much, since he wasn't doing anything. He was just there! So I just drank in the moments, wishing that feeling of pure love would last forever. I then thought about God's relationship with me. I have always thought I needed to perform, to be doing something for Him to make sure He will love me. But, as impossible as it seems, He loves me even more than I love Jace, and when He looks at me, His heart fills with love too. I don't need to give Him a reason to love me; He just does! All I need do is desire to be near Him. Airplane not only has adventure and fun pictures to keep children interested, but also teaches values, morals and life lessons. Arnold is a spunky little airplane with a good heart, but gets himself into a little bit of trouble when he goes against the rules his parents gave him. Arnold learns that there are consequences for his actions. However, the little airplane also realizes that his father was by his side all along watching out for him. The first time I read this story, it took me back to my own teenage years of going outside the boundries of what my parents had taught me and reminded me of their unconditional love that kept me safe. I knew I had to have this book to read to my children, future grandchildren and the kids that I Nanny for. It is a great way to teach the concept of love and obedience, cause and effect and more, while having fun. The reading is in rhyme form and very easy-going. I love what the author has to say about his grandson, family and faith. Thank you for writing something so fun and wholesome to share with our children. We hope there are more books to follow.

The text is so clever and I am sure will appeal to all the children I gift it to.Last Sunday at church I sat next to a Mom struggling to keep her little children quiet. I remember those days having had 3 small stair step sons myself. Some people were firing off looks but I thought what a wonderful kind of courage she had, she needed to be fed with God's grace. I bought several copies of this book and will keep them in a spot at church, so that I can be of help.

By Amazon Customer My dad has really gotten into woodworking since his retirement, so I got him this book for Christmas. He was so excited, he started reading it right then, completely oblivious to the merrymaking going on by the rest of the family. At one point, he drew my husband into a discussion of the ingenuity of one of the projects featured in the book. This book is definitely full of some great projects, and detailed illustrations. I made sure to dog-ear the pages of the projects I wanted before heading home. LOL

Number 31 Squadron RAF will celebrate its centenary in 2015; a pivotal milestone for a Squadron engaged at the forefront of military activity for the past 100 years. With a number of events lined up to celebrate this important anniversary, former Commanding Officer of the Squadron, Ian Hall, has set himself the ambitious task of penning the Squadron's entire history, from formation right up to current-day activities. This lively and informative narrative is interspersed with first-hand accounts taken from interviews conducted with the men who made/make up the Squadron. The first twenty-five years of the Squadron's history were spent on India's North-West Frontier, hence the Squadron motto 'First in the Indian Skies'. During the Second World War, it was occupied mainly in the Middle East and North Africa, before moving to the Burma theatre for the remainder of the war. Upon returning to the UK in 1948, the Squadron performed communications duties until, in 1955, it joined the Cold War in West Germany, operating successively in reconnaissance and strike/attack roles. Operational deployment in recent years has seen the Squadron deployed during the Gulf War, the Iraq War, in Kosovo, and Afghanistan. With troops pulling out of Afghanistan in 2014, 31 Squadron have now completed a circular history, and there seems no better time than now to commit it to print.Each and every facet of this long and varied history is relayed in a style that serves to provide an account that is at once celebratory and objective when it comes to recording not only the facts of the various deployments but also the personal stories of the men behind the headlines.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. the RAF By G.I.Forbes This is an outstanding history of 31 squadron RAF by one of its commanding officers (1992-4)Formed in 1915 as a unit of the Royal Flying Corps it was amagumated with the the Royal Naval Air Service in 1918 to form the RAF.Posted to India in 1916 it remained there untill 1945 then sew service in Singapore,Burma and Java it returned to the U K and then went to Germany in1955 and then went bact to the UK where it now remains.Very well written and researched with a good maps and a considerable number of black and white pictures (why no colour} but many are so small to be of no value.A 10 star book.

As such, I can tell you that there's a ton of passion in this book. Adrian loves what he does and wants to use both his excitement and knowledge to help others. The result: An engaging read that provides a clear blueprint for producing quality video. I can't think of an area Adrian missed.Simply put, everybody wants to do video these days. And it seems like "everybody" does. It has never been easier to create, publish and distribute video. However, with this ease comes a great deal of low-quality video. If you don't know what you're doing, video might provide short-term results, but not a viable long-term plan. You won't cut through. Rather, you'll be lumped in with the noise. As I see it, this is the problem Adrian sets out to address. He wants you to produce video, but he wants you to do it the right way so you'll get results that last. Even if you're an experienced creator, there will be plenty you can learn from Adrian. His information is well worth the price of access.

Purchase-Do Not Lease (You will always want a copy of this book in your collection) By Kindle Customer Starting with No Easy Hope, and continuing on with Savages, James Cook’s writing progression has been remarkable. His first novel, No Easy Hope, had more heart and soul than great writing skills. Now, the story, characters and writing have so much quality and depth that I, for one, will always BUY his books versus just reading them under Kindle Unlimited; the ultimate compliment to an author you like to read.This installment sees Eric, Gabe and Caleb kicking some serious ass. Alliance ass kicking; North Korean’s getting an ass whopping and as always some superior zombie ass kicking with the always needed head shot for the kill. Included just for more fun, Eric kicks ass against a Spec Ops Operator. The ass kicking never stops and makes for a great read.I am realizing that even though there are other ZA series that I truly love, Cook has set his apart by not keeping to the same formula for each of his books. The author has made an effort to write real progression and change throughout the series. The enemies and challenges are different along the journey and we get to see the characters fully flushed out and living a “real” life during a zombie apocalypse. It is not all about the action but the relationships that are built in the quieter moments of the story that make me love this series and this author so much.

I really enjoyed the story of Caleb Hicks and appreciated the author's willingness to show us more of the ZA, but getting Eric back in the saddle was a big deal. First, this book is solid action, start to finish, and the trademark bantering between Gabe and Eric sometimes had me in stitches. Other times, the serious nature of their discussions really underlined the stark nature of their precarious existence. Great stuff here, and left me wanting more. James Cook is a seriously talented writer and I hope to see more from him, and soon.

I bought this based on the four positive reviews, which must be skewed. This book is very thin, with very large type, and lots of white space between paragraphs. The information is basic and poorly written, such as "sweep your counters and replace items that are out of place. De-clutter your drawers and under the sink too." I bought this book to include in an organizational giveaway basket and am embarrassed to include it.

I've always been interested in minimalism - trying to stop material goods being the things that bring us happiness, and not owning more than we need - and picked this book up after hearing a few people around me enjoy it. I was hoping it would give me a few tips on how to lead a more clutter-free existence, and while it accomplished that, it also did so much more.

Bryn Chancellor is an assistant professor of English at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. That being said, I really did love these stories, some of which I had already read, but there were many which were new to me. Each time I would begin reading by thinking how weird it was that I was reading my own daughter's story, but by the time I had gotten into the second page I was hooked on the characters and wondered how they would turn out. I like reading short stories, especially at night, as I can finish one in a relatively short time and then go to bed. (Of course, sometimes I would be thinking about the story and not be able to drop off to sleep right away, but that's a different issue.) All of the stories will make you think and care about what happens, sometimes for weeks after. A great book and a great read. Buy it; you'll love it.

The title story introduces us to a locksmith who prowls empty houses while grappling with a family tragedy. In other stories, we meet a couple who agree to stop speaking to each other, a daughter troubled by her mother’s plastic surgery, a young woman with turnip-colored hair who mistreats a guy in a wheelchair, a woman who falls down the state capitol steps in a short skirt in plain view of her current husband and her ex, and more. This book won the Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Fiction. I heard Chancellor read one story at the Tucson Festival of Books, and I knew I had to buy this book. I’m glad I did.

From the grieving locksmith in the first story to the unemployed would-be astronomer in the last piece, Chancellor's characters and their yearning are deeply affecting. This book is essential reading not only for those who love great literature, but also for writers interested in learning how to craft great stories.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Hot Romance in a New Direction By M. Varhalmi I love Silver James' books. It was so amazing to read the spin-off from her Wolves books. And the Wolves make an appearance in this tale because someone was trying to kill of the SEALs. Ms. James writes terrific action adventure romance and romantic suspense. I wasn't disappointed with this new direction and can't wait to read more from the Hard Target series. :)

I just finished the first book in the series, Double Cross, and hate to say that I am a bit disappointed. This book felt rushed and ended too quickly for me. It felt like I was watching a movie and an hour in, the end credits start rolling and I'm just like, "Whaaa??? WTF?" The book didn't seem to have a climax where you wonder how the characters could possibly get their HEA. It didn't have an ending where all the pieces fall into place and the reader is happy that it is not a book with another freaking cliffhanger. This book doesn't exactly end in a cliffhanger, it just leaves too many questions unanswered - questions about the main characters. I can understand leaving questions about an overall theme in a series that is then picked up again in the following books; but this one leaves pretty big questions unanswered about the main female character. I will plan on reading the other books in the series - I just hope they are a bit more developed and finish on a more satisfying note than this one did. Overall, I would recommend this book. It is a good book in what I hope will be a good series, but it isn't a great book that can fully satisfy a readers curiosity and need for answers. It is on Kindle Unlimited so take an afternoon off and read the story - I just want other readers to open the book with the knowledge that I now have so they aren't as disappointed as I was.Also, the sex scenes aren't that blush-inducing. It barely touches on some D/s themes but on a scale of 0 to 'Holy Hotness Batman!' I give it a five. Extra steamy to those with virgin eyes, but to most everyone else it will get you - at most - slightly hot under the collar.PS - Silver, I am incredibly disappointed about SEAL Team Atlantis. I understand Mother 'explained' things to you, but I am still saddened that I won't get to hear more about all the members with the special abilities on that team. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Action-packed romantic thriller By Lisa Tracy I read Double Cross with Amazon Prime, and am thrilled to have found Silver James' work. Her fast-paced romantic thriller is the first in the Hard Target series. Although Double Cross stands alone well on its own, it refers to Ms. James' Wolves series several times, and I wish I had read them first so that I had a firm grasp on the related back story.Both the hero and heroine are strong characters who successfully overcome major obstacles. The novel's non-stop action will keep you turning pages long after you promised yourself "just 15 more minutes." And don't forget to turn on the ceiling fan -- there are a couple of hot, hot, hot scenes!As much as I enjoyed Double Cross, I would have liked to get a better feel for the characters and their motivations. Cory is a pediatrician, yet we don't really see her in that role or understand why she feels so passionately about her vocation. And we don't have any real insight into why Duke joined the Navy SEALs.Even so, I've already downloaded Moonstruck: Secrets, the first book in Ms. James' Wolves series. I'm looking forward to reading it!

The author keeps you guessing and adds in new adventures for the main character Mirrra, throughout the entire story. Mirra is the kind of character you instantly fall in love with. She makes poor decisions mixed with hard luck that turns into a recipe for tough consequences. Her consequences change her life as the story unfolds. Great story!
