Heath This quiet, profound book explores the still depths of grief and loss, yet it ends with a sense of hope and a realization of what constitutes home. Many of my recent reads have been more like shallow rapids, so I found this book to be deeply refreshing. The protagonist is as richly realized a character as I have encountered in quite a while, and the subsidiary characters are equally individual. These are people you feel you really know by the end of the book, in all their complexity and many-faceted humanity. The setting, too, is drawn in precise and evocative detail. The reader doesn't have to take on faith Oleanna's affinity for her homestead in the Norwegian fjords, because we see the farm and the lake through her eyes, in all their beauty and wildness.Oleanna is not a book for people who want non-stop action, but for those who want to explore human nature and experience in depth, it will satisfy. I look forward to reading more by this very talented author.

A haunting novel of isolation set in the wilds of Norway By The Curious Dame Oleanna was short-listed in the 2011 Faulkner-Wisdom novel competition.The first thing that drew me to read this novel was its unusual setting of Norway in the early years of the 20th century. From the very start, its pages evoked an emotion of haunting loneliness that complimented the isolated setting and set the tone of the entire story.To say I was impressed with the novel is an understatement. I was irresistibly drawn to the characters and always left guessing. Their actions were always unpredictable, holding my fascination, keeping me turning the pages to find out what they would do next. Anders was depicted with an abundance of mysteriousness. Was he truly a good man? Or what secrets did he hide?Based on the true life story of the author's spinster aunts added fascination. The author was able to delve deep into the thoughts and emotions of the characters to give a detailed understanding of their struggles.The quality of any novel is exemplified in the transformational journey of its main characters. In this regard, this story did not disappoint. The characters changed in ways I had not expected, especially Oleanna and her sister. Both women learned much about themselves and the land they clung to.This novel abounds with haunting emotion, sadness, and ultimate triumph. I am not surprised it was shortlisted 2011 Faulkner-Wisdom novel competition. Oleanna is women's historical fiction at its finest. I thoroughly enjoyed every word and highly recommend it as a fascinating read giving insight into a lesser known country and period in history.

What lasting effects do seasons, topography, and nature have on our feelings of home? Who has marked our souls with love, loss, and memories that linger like ghosts, those animating spirits for good or bad that occupy our thoughts? These are some of the multi-layered themes of OLEANNA, a story of love and longing for the land.Julie K. Rose's novel is set in Norway on the cusp of independence from Sweden after 600 years. The time is 1905. In this mystical place, sisters Oleanna and Elizabeth are beset by ghosts. They have known great losses, from the deaths of their father, mother and sisters, to brothers who have immigrated to America yearning for something different. All the leavings have scarred Oleanna and stripped her of the will to make a new life.Unwilling to risk adventures of any kind, especially those of the heart, Oleanna is ambivalent about her fledging feelings for Anders who has moved into the cotter's house on the farm. As the intensity of their feelings for one another grows, offering opportunities away from home, Oleanna is double-minded about leaving. What prevents her from following her heart? Is there nothing keeping her there but history and debts to the dead?Must she leave home to avoid the ghosts, or are there ways to exorcise them and stay on the farm that is so deeply ingrained on her soul?Norway is a character in Rose's second novel. From rosemal scrollwork and fjord ponies, to apparitions of wraiths, the land of her ancestors is portrayed with vivid descriptions and delights.
