Hallisey I had previously reviewed Computers For Seniors For Dummies and gave it 5 stars. I thought it was an excellent concise guide for just about anyone looking for an introduction to computer and/or making the leap to Windows 10 for a previous version. "Laptops for Dummies" offers pretty much the same thing (though the first few chapters are - obviously - laptop-centric). Though the two books are very similar, I didn't find them equal to the task. It's difficult to explain, but I found Computers For Seniors For Dummies more engaging and containing less fluff."Laptops for Dummies" spends the first six chapters (up to p. 78) introducing the laptop form factor. Interesting stuff (for a computer-oriented history buff), but I wonder how many people would find it valuable. I suspect most would skip right to Chapter 8 ("Your Laptop and Windows"). What about Chapter 7, you ask? Chapter 7 is devoted to a brief introduction to the tablet (PC). To my mind, this chapter has the potential to be more filler (at best) or confusing (at worst) for the type person needing this book.So the book really starts on p. 93. From this point on it's pretty much the same as Computers For Seniors For Dummies and - I suspect - Mr. Gookin's PCs For Dummies (where the current rating, btw, is similar to how I've rated this book). Given the intended audience are those who really, really, really know next to almost nothing about computers I wonder if the book could confuse more than not. The author spends quite a bit of time introducing and explaining various ports and parts of the laptop, but the discussion on Windows (etc.) assumes a level of knowledge and confidence that is higher than the level assumed about laptops. In the end, just not sure the book works well enough to justify the cost ($25 retail seems pretty steep; $15 seems far more appropriate with an Amazon price no higher than $10). But as with Computers For Seniors For Dummies I plan on keeping it around: I'm sure it will be a useful addition to my counseling job where I often deal with clients who find computers necessary but overwhelming. Likewise, I bet this would be a helpful addition to the libraries of senior centers, adult continuing ed centers, etc.P.S. one of the best nuggets is found on p. 96 where the author describes the "start" screen in Windows 10 and names the "app panel" that pops up the "'What the Hell?' Area." Perfect. Spot on. Also, see p. 51 where the author addresses how easy (not) it is to migrate data in Windows 10. Priceless.

The HOW, WHAT & WHY of Laptops and Windows 10 By Lynrie I'm not new to laptops, but multiple Microsoft Windows versions coupled with computer technology advances, the cloud, apps, etc have me with scrambled brains. "Laptop For Dummies" makes it so much easier by providing tips and tricks to knowing, understanding, using and sometimes loving the power and capabilities of the laptop, it's new software upgrade, and the potential for improved use. This book is the 6th edition and the author, a PC guru, shares his experience and wisdom obtained over 2 decades in the industry to make the readers life easier by providing laptop info about:* purchase,* setup,* touring Windows 10- Start menu, programs, file storage, files from old computer,* file synchronization,* using Laptop for travel and/or business,* safe wi-fi usage,* managing battery power,* maintenance, troubleshooting and security tips. There's even more FUN stuff like uploading photos from smartphone or camera. All that and more are provided by the book itself, access to free Cheat Sheets for this book, Dummies Newsletters for an array of topics, technical and non-technical.

It isn't that I don't like it, but more that my expectations when it comes to hardware is high. Maybe too high. I note that at the beginning of review as a sort of a grain of salt warning.I selected this book because I got a new laptop for Christmas. My first laptop in years because my last one drove me nuts. It is Windows 10 and just seems a bit wonky at times so when I saw this book become available, I decided to take a look. Upon review, there are some things that were new to me. Like I realized that I had the monitor at the wrong angle and I did like the power saver information. For a beginner, this is a good book for overview. If an intermediate to advanced (I'd put myself firmly at intermediate), the content may seem redundant. For example, I don't really want to know the history of the laptop."Laptops for Dummies" is a nice intro book but I was expecting more.

Ray Instaread’s Lights Out: A Cyberattack, A Nation Unprepared, Surviving the Aftermath by Ted Koppel/Key Takeaways, Analysis & Review is a summary of Koppel’s journalistic essay on the deadly potential of a cyberattack on the United States power grid. In his first book, the veteran journalist points out that reliance on Internet connectivity by the disparate entities responsible for power supply in the U.S. leaves the grid vulnerable to widespread, long-lasting, and potentially catastrophic power outages which could have a devastating impact on the entire country. His conclusion, that the lack of coordination and cooperation between government regulators at federal and state level and the private energy companies, along with the public’s lack of knowledge of how power is provided, means that it is likely to take a catastrophe like 9/11, which changed the public’s view on air travel safety to focus attention on the problem.Another outstanding summary of a book that addresses a subject that is not likely to resonate with the average readers enough to cause them to buy the book, but can nonetheless get a sense of its importance. An important resource for busy people who need help in deciding which books to buy.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Important information everyone should know By Ivy Reisner This is a guide to the book Lights Out, not the original text. It analysis the main points of the book and distills them such that a reader can get to the main information quickly and decide if the full work is worth the read. The key takeaways covered in this book are:1- The power grid in the US is vulnerable to attack, be it physical, EMP, or a computer hack. Electrical systems are often Internet connected, for monitoring, for efficiency, and for convenience, but stringent security measures were often not implemented due to cost considerations. I will disagree with one point made, and that is that non-connected systems are due to the "sneaker-net" or carrying of data to those machines via thumb drive. It would be easy to scan such drives, or cheap to just pick up new ones at need, and extremely difficult to write a replicating virus that attacks the correct system while working blind.2- Resistancy regulation is complicated due to competing jurisdictions and interests. States can impose regulations, but those vary state to state, as does enforcement. Energy companies are in direct competition with each other and are active in keeping the federal government from mandating a nation-wide resiliancy standard. Security3- Damage can include fires, blackouts over a large area and a long time, and expensive equipment damage. If a system is restored, but the underlying vulnerability not addressed, the system can be brought down again almost immediately.4- Professionals disagree about the degree of risk involved. Questions on how likely an attack is succeed and how much damage can be done are hotly debated.5- Cyberattacks are a serious risk. We've seen the potential in such attacks as the ones on Sony in late 2014. We've seen how quickly this can cascade in the East Coast blackout of 2003.6- Attacks can originate from anywhere in the world, again, as evidenced by the attack on Sony.7- Disaster recovery plans are impractical, incomplete, and poorly communicated. The goal of communicating to the public must be weighed against the risk of attackers taking advantage of that information.8- Sparse information is available for individuals to make their own disaster preparation plans.9- Individual groups, in growing numbers, are investing in disaster preparation and planning. Information is provided on these groups and how they operate, with further information available in the original book. This is a topic that should be of concern to most people, and it's worthwhile to at least get this level overview on the topic. It's a quick read, and it's worth it. I received a sample copy in exchange for an honest review.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. ~~ A review on the vulnerability of the US power grid ~~ By Richard and Liz Are you ready if a power station near you goes out? The original book by Ted Koppel is a journalistic report on what could happen if the power grids are attacked. Who is Ted Koppel AKA Edward James Martin Koppel? Ted was the anchor on Nightline from 1980-2005. There are 9 Key Takeways in this Instaread summary. Here are a couple to whet your appetite:>>>#1 - "US power grids are vulnerable to attacks. These range from physical attacks to cyberattacks that target systems control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems and internet-connected controls used to operate devices remotely, as well as attacks by electromagnetic pulse (EMP).>>>#7 - "Plans for disaster response in the event of large, persistent power outages are generally incomplete, impractical, and unknown to residents. In most areas, especially metropolitan regions, residents do not often have enough supplies stockpiles to survive a lengthy large-scale outage."What does CRISP stand for? Key Takeaway #9 talks about the plans the Mormons have in place but does not go into detail. Instaread informs the reader that the author, instead of telling how the attacks would occur, focuses more on the motives of the attackers and the impact of blackouts on communities. Several chapters in the original focus on the strategies of "preppers" and preparation plans of the Mormons. This Instaread summary is great for what it is, a summary BUT if you want to read/learn some of the 'How To's' and be more informed you are going to want to read the 288 page original. You can only fit so much into a 26 page summary. Important to note that my review is based on the quality of this Instaread review and not the original book. Summary provided in exchange for an honest review. Thanks, Liz

Hello. My name is Chloe Gardner, and I have 34.5 lives. In all 34.5 of my lives I am a trans woman. In all 34.5 of my lives I am a murderer. This is my story. Sometimes you have no choice but to turn to murder. When the going gets tough and there's only one way out, even the kindest person might find their mind drawn towards that darkest of acts. But Chloe Gardner isn't the kindest of people. Chloe Gardner is a woman who's had enough - of life, of other people, of everything. And when everything around her begins to dissolve into nonsense, when spacetime begins to fold in on itself and her many lives -spread across multiple dimensions- begin to bleed into one another, murder begins to overshadow everything that she is until in the end she is left wondering: did she ever have any other choice?

Hart As the blurb suggests, this story is about Chloe who is a Trans woman and her 34.5 lives, which we as the reader experience one after the other. Some of those lives are in the world as we know it, while some are set on other planets and dimensions. There are a quirky cast of interesting characters, notably Sherlock Holmes, and the ghost of Colonel Sanders. This is a very well written book that held my interest throughout. I loved Alice Cox's writing style and I had to keep reading to find out where Chloe's next life would take her. While Hypersanity was in turn both humorous and at times bizarre, Alice Cox herself being a trans woman, it also touched on deep, serious issues experienced by those in the trans community. There was a particular scene that involved cockroaches in a symbolic sense and I personally found that scene both sad and emotive. Note that this book contains strong language and sexual scenes.I think this book will be enjoyed by those in the LGBT community and anyone who enjoys a well written story that is out of the ordinary.

The Story of My Teeth, by Valeria Luiselli

Review “One of the most unforgettable images in any book this year is that of Gustavo “Highway” Sánchez Sánchez, the protagonist of Luiselli’s delightfully unclassifiable novel, walking around the streets of Mexico City, smiling at people with the teeth of Marilyn Monroe installed in his mouth . . . surprising and charming . . . It’s difficult not to follow wherever it takes you.”—Publishers Weekly, *starred and boxed review*“A lively, loopy experimental novel rich with musings on language, art, and, yes, teeth. . .the whole book is a kind of extended commentary on how possessions acquire value largely through the stories we tell about them. . . A clever philosophical novel that, as the author puts it, has "less to do with lying than surpassing the truth.”—Kirkus Starred Review“Luiselli follows in the imaginative tradition of writers like Borges and Márquez, but her style and concerns are unmistakably her own. This deeply playful novel is about the passion and obsession of collecting, the nature of storytelling, the value of objects, and the complicated bonds of family. . . Luiselli has become a writer to watch, in part because it’s truly hard to know (but exciting to wonder about) where she will go next.”—The New York Times"Q: Whom would you want to write your life story? A: Valeria Luiselli”—The New York Times“This highly inventive novel is narrated by a garrulous auctioneer who invents “hypertrue” stories for the objects he sells. . . . a work of immense charm and originality, written in vivid, witty prose.”—The New Yorker“[The Story of My Teeth is] proof that Valeria Luiselli is one of the most exciting new writers working today.”—Los Angeles Times“This giddy, witty, idiosyncratic novel . . . is a jubilant celebration of the act of storytelling. . . Ms. Luiselli persuasively suggests that our lives would be empty vessels, hardly worth bidding on, without the “stories that give them value and meaning.”—Wall Street Journal“The Story of My Teeth is a playful, philosophical funhouse of a read that demonstrates that not only isn’t experimental fiction dead, it needn’t be deadly, either.”—NPR“Although buoyant, Luiselli's work never seems flippant, perhaps because of her precise prose style . . . Linear at first glance, it soon opens out into a world of stories, like a mouth with one tooth from every artist in the world.”—Chicago Tribune“The Story of My Teeth’s playful re-contextualizations and detours are bound to leave you puzzled at some point—perhaps even many. . . . the book is a delightfully weird meander into art, salesmanship, Mexican culture, and experimental dentistry.” —Beijing Bookworm"What Highway (and Luiselli) is really hawking is fantasy, a sort of shared experience of faith in the improbable – the art of storytelling, essentially, to which The Story of My Teeth pays manic veneration."—The Globe and Mail (Canada)“This boggling and enchanting collaborative novel about a man who believes he has had Marilyn Monroe’s literal teeth implanted into his mouth began as a bit of art gallery catalog copy sponsored by a large juice company.”—National Post(Canada)“This charmingly slippery slip of a book, packed with fantastical allusions, reminds us that the world’s great stories can be ours for a very reasonable price."—The San Francisco Chronicle"In a delicately layered, wryly funny fashion, Luiselli is exploring the actual value of telling made-up stories.”—Huffington Post“The Story of My Teeth is a great read. The writing is equal parts elegant and chatty, with a great sense of humor.”—The Millions“Luiselli offers a bright new voice in fiction, exploring the role of story in art through her quirky protagonist, Gustavo Sánchez Sánchez . . . . Playing with different ways to tell story, The Story of My Teeth is sly, endearing, refreshing, and ever broadening.”—Bookshop Santa Cruz“Wonderful and strange, The Story of My Teeth transgresses against straightforward storytelling by witnessing and remixing to make something so fresh and new that it defies easy description. Just know that it dazzles on every page.”—Brazos Bookstore“[The Story of My Teeth] reminds us of the power and sway of great stories, especially those we tell ourselves that, by sheer persistence, we come to believe!”—Green Apple Books on Park“It’s easy to see why Valeria Luiselli was chosen by the National Book Foundation as one of the 5 Under 35 Honorees. Within just a few paragraphs of her new novel, The Story of My Teeth, you’ll be completely drawn into the weird and wonderful world of Gustavo “Highway” Sánchez Sánchez. This captivating story is filled with memorable characters and situations, but what is even more intriguing is the background story of how this work was written in collaboration with workers at a Jumex juice factory in Mexico City.”—Shawn Donley, Powell's Books“Valeria Luiselli’s THE STORY OF MY TEETH is the most likable book this year. Don’t misunderstand: likeable doesn’t mean it isn’t brilliant or original or genre-defying or any of those other great things because, indeed, it is all of those things. But it’s also Luiselli’s inventiveness, the pure joy she takes in the act of storytelling, that makes this novel so exuberant.”—Brazos Bookstore"This kind of writing—direct and gentle, affectionate and satirical, precise and imaginative, memorable and efficient—appears throughout, and the character of Gustavo is brought to life with exquisite imaginative power and beautifully judged tics and cadences. . . . It is a sad, beautiful and brilliant book. It will endure."—The National (UK)" Valeria Luiselli's new novel The Story of My Teeth explores the meaning of home through the antics of an auctioneer, told in his own hyperbolic fashion, who has decided views on the meaning of value and worth in life and art."—BBC“The Story of My Teeth is a rich, provocative meditation on authenticity, heritage and personality.”—Publisher's Weekly“Though playful and unruly, her fiction feels surprisingly warm and old-fashioned.”—Kirkus, cover feature“Training as an auctioneer, Highway hopes these and other skills will help him find the perfect set of teeth. If that sounds like an odd plot, I can only promise you that things get delightfully odder. . . Luiselli’s novel arrives in the United States from tiny Coffee House Press with considerable momentum behind it.”—The Guardian“Besides its engaging characters and plot, there’s the equally compelling backstory of this book, which Luiselli wrote in collaboration with employees of Mexico’s Jumex, an industrial giant that produces and distributes juice.”—The Guardian“Prefigured by her excellent book of essays, Sidewalks, The Story of My Teeth is playful, attentive and very smart without being for a minute pretentious. It’s Walter Benjamin without tears—sunnier, more casual and more nimble.”—The New York Times Sunday Book Review“The story of Luiselli’s teeth is positively constructive, even warm. Instead of collapsing and decomposing fragments, The Story of My Teeth reaches toward a world composed of fragments, the creative process which Highway calls — in a moment of clarity — a “postcapitalist, radical recycling . . . that would save the world from its existential condition as the garbage can of history.” —Los Angeles Review of Books“A perfectly defined universe."—Clash“The Story of My Teeth defies classification, and underscores the power of storytelling and the importance of reading.”—Virginia Quarterly Review“When reading it, I had no idea of where it was going, in the best possible way. I mean I felt like it encompassed such a wide shift in tone. There were comic moments; there were incredibly tragic moments; there were surreal moments.”—Vol. 1 Brooklyn“Luiselli has proven in both her novels that she’s willing to break novelistic conventions to simultaneously tell and deconstruct her stories. If you don’t mind some post-postmodernism with your misadventures, The Story of My Teeth is well worth bidding on.”—PANK“The following exchange, which typifies Luiselli’s willingness to lay bare artifice and to expose ‘the many layers of its making,’ captures the spirit of her work – and the charm of the writer herself.”—The White Review “The Story of My Teeth ends up containing the truths and delusions of a fabulist, elements of the picaresque, unresolved preoccupations, wonderful asides, and a whole house of mirrors constructed with so much mirth and skill that it seems to avoid the glumly highbrow label of “postmodernism.””—Words without Borders“Shuttling between the quotidian and the transcendent, between the earthly and the intellectual, all the while disrupting those very tenuous categories, is precisely what makes The Story of My Teeth so engaging.”—Slant Magazine"Playfully brilliant."—BuzzFeed"Luiselli’s experiment pays off handsomely here as she shares her stories and involves her audience in creating them, and her imagination and intelligence make them a delight for readers. For those readers who may wonder where a form like the novel can go next and how much it can change without losing its way, Valeria Luiselli’s latest effort shows one way."—Mary Whipple Reviews “The language seldom draws attention to itself, yet occasionally bursts into pyrotechnics. . . Highway emerges as an unexpectedly persuasive character, one who lingers in the reader’s imagination."—Necessary Fiction“The Story of My Teeth is an intelligent and highly funny experiment of a novel. . . . With its manifold textures, a structure reminiscent of early Michael Ondaatje, and a thoroughly entertaining, Walser-esque protagonist in Highway Sánchez, The Story of My Teeth marks another leap forward in Luiselli’s already stunning career.”—3:AM Magazine“[The Story of My Teeth is] hotly anticipated and promises to be playful, sharp, profound, and utterly unusual.”—Huffington Post"As strange and beautiful as the novel itself is the backstory to its creation — a tale that involves a juice factory, a world-class art collection, and a rather unlikely collaboration.”—Studio 360“Unlike anything in contemporary US fiction, The Story of My Teeth — as the unforgettable protagonist ‘Highway’ explains — is composed of ‘hyperbolics, parabolics, circulars, allegorics, and elliptics.’”—Flavorwire“Readers hungry for more from Luiselli will be happy with this clever variation on her style.”—Library Journal“Like her previous books, the novel Faces in the Crowd and the essay collection Sidewalks, this is a rich, eccentric, innovative work, and is sure to add to the author’s swiftly growing list of accolades.”—Rain Taxi“Forms and genres collide in this often hilarious experimental fiction from one of our most consistent young writers.”—Flavorwire“A lovely, spare and playful voice . . . The Story of My Teeth is guided by an exceptional, memorable intelligence.”—The Rumpus“The ever inventive, always incisive Valeria Luiselli presents a mosaic of fable, comedy, drama, and essay.”—Largehearted Boy“The Story of My Teeth is unlike anything you’ve ever read. With this brilliant, weird, zany second novel, Luiselli has solidified her place as one of the most interesting and imaginative minds putting words on paper today.”—Porter Square Books"The Story of My Teeth is a testament to eccentricity, to the willed inclusion of a discourse that Highway considers to be 'infinite' in its permutation sand "illuminated" in the resplendence of its references. If eccentricity is deviation from a known curve, then Luiselli has created an exceptional 'novel-essay' that irradiates beyond the orthodoxies of literary genre."—Frieze“I am so very excited about this book. Luiselli’s Faces in the Crowd was one of my favorites last year. Legend has it, Luiselli wrote The Story of My Teeth with help from workers at a Jumex juice factory in Mexico.”—BookRiot"[Luiselli writes:] "Something in me resists the ground.” It is precisely this resistance which means Luiselli’s work remains airborne, impossible to categorize and ultimately so refreshing.—Lit Hub“With this brilliant, weird, zany second novel, Luiselli has solidified her place as one of the most interesting and imaginative minds putting words on paper today.”—Lit Hub“Wonderful and strange, The Story of My Teeth transgresses against straightforward storytelling by witnessing and remixing to make something so fresh and new that it defies easy description. Just know that it dazzles on every page.”—Lit Hub“Luiselli thrills with her kaleidoscopic mix of narrative styles, metafictional riffs and Borgesian fantasy, and delivers a comic ‘dental autobiography’ and a shrewd meditation on the worth of art and literature.”—Star Tribune“It’s not every writer who is brave enough to share the stage in her own work with her translator – and a group of employees at a juice factory – but Valeria Luiselli’s got balls as well as serious talent.”—Brightest Young Things

By Mary Whipple If that quotation does not pique your curiosity with its absurdity, the succeeding images may. As soon as the speaker, Gustavo “Highway” Sanchez Sanchez, returns from Cuba to Mexico, he contacts the “best cosmetic dental clinic” in Mexico City and has “each of the teeth belonging to the Venus of the big screen transplanted into [his] mouth,” though he does save ten of his old teeth, the best-looking ones, for later, “just in case.” For months afterward, he walks around Mexico City smiling at his appearance in reflections, celebrating his good luck, and believing that “[his] life was a poem.”Mexican author Valeria Luiselli, an author who has just celebrated her thirty-second birthday, continues this unique story and point of view, expanding the absurdities, incorporating dozens of unique images, story lines, and sudden surprises, and transporting the reader into new and unlikely world. This work, a “novel-essay,” as she calls it, along with all its individual stories, is part of a much more ambitious effort by Luiselli to expand the boundaries of the novel and art in general, though she does this without being the least bit pompous or self-conscious, explaining her efforts within the Afterword.Highway, having begun as a guard in a juice factory, becomes a Personnel Crisis Supervisor, a job which keeps him twiddling his thumbs until he is able to take a variety of classes, travel to seminars, and eventually marry and father a son, Siddhartha. As time passes, he tries to become a contemporary dancer and actor, before he learns that being an auctioneer is a quicker way to success. He gets his first chance to practice his new trade in a benefit for the church– auctioning off the ten teeth of his own which he saved when he had Marilyn Monroe’s teeth implanted. Believing that he can restore an object’s value “through a elegant surpassing of the truth,” he provides a separate story for each of the teeth that he auctions. The book divides into sections which illustrate the several kinds of auctions that Highway has categorized, and expands the story as the reader learns about the reappearance of Highway's now-adult son Siddhartha and his revenge on his father for abandoning him and his mother.Throughout all this, the author maintains a fine literary style with many references to literature’s greatest and their works; a sensitivity to sound and spelling, which she uses for puns (and characters like Hochimin and a barbershop called Hair Charisma); and a knowledge of art, both contemporary and classical. Though the novel is a free-for-all in terms of the speed of the imagery and the shifts in focus, the novel is well organized without being limited. Luiselli’s experiment pays off handsomely here as she shares her stories and involves her audience in creating them. For those readers who may wonder where a form like the novel can go next and how much it can change without losing its way, Valeria Luiselli’s latest effort shows one way.t losing its way, Valeria Luiselli’s latest effort shows one way.

Short, I could not stop reading it from beginning to end.It is the "march of folly" that we human beings live, travelling daily from our own misery to our greatness and back. This story, happening in my beautiful and beloved Mexico, is deeply universal, providing easy access - to lay readers such as me - to some of the best writers of all time.It is also, in itself, a megainnovation in its genre, by building a participatory story with factory workers. It is both a sad novel, and a humorous story, well written and perversely ironic, about the greatness and weaknesses of us all. I read it with a smile in my mouth, swallowing a playful sarcasm or a surprise every few lines.

I love Latin American writers. The very short blurb sounded like the writing might be similar to that of the recently deceased Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the master story teller and Nobel Prize winner. Valeria Luiselli's imagination works overtime. It's the wonder she had a thought left in her head after writing this little jewel. I was so entranced I couldn't put it down and so I read it in one sitting. The story must have originated in a dream the author had. The whole book is so delightfully absurd that it had to be hatched from a dream. One more example of the "magical realism" that Latin American authors are so famous for.

Darklight II: Conflagration, by John Wells

About the Author John Wells grew up in Wisconsin and attended Marquette University. During this time, he worked for several large research firms. He moved out west to Wyoming and started his own construction company. Mr. Wells is an avid reader of numerous scientific journals and stays up to date on various areas of current astrophysical research. These days he spends much of his time in the mountains of Wyoming, where he says, "I can do my best thinking." He is currently working on the third episode of the popular 'Darklight series.' He has been married to his wife Susan for forty three years, and has two children.

Multi-dimensional sci-fi military thriller of cataclysmic potential By Chanticleer Book Reviews Five years after the publication of the military sci-fi thriller "Darklight I: The Substance of Shadows," comes the second installment in the series, "Darklight II: Conflagration," the continuation of the conflicts between human and Matarin rebels and the genocidal Cren Empire. The stakes have considerably risen since mathematician and rebel fighter Crash Tyson first encountered the billions-year-old Cren Empire in the battle against the equally ancient ESOG Empire. The remaining freedom fighters seek a new sanctuary where they can rebuild their fleet and enhance the Spatial Exclusion Wave technology that Tyson created. They find safe haven with the Skarr, a species that had battled the Luin--the telepathic race controlling the Cren Empire--many eons ago.The Skarr hold an advantage: the Luin believe them extinct, along with the Sargen and the Valm, two species that had fought alongside the Skarr. Tyson, however, has the distinct disadvantage of being the Cren Empire's sole focus, with his capture worth the destruction of billions of their own warriors. What warrants such galactic wastage? Tyson is the Progenitor Being, the model human that P-Quan, the Cren governor, created as an experiment in accelerating human genetic evolution in order to generate someone capable of solving The Great Problem. It is with this experiment that Wells compels us to consider the purpose of sentient life in the Universe. The nature of that problem serves as a teaser until late in the game, when the conflict escalates into a war of multi-dimensional magnitude. The depiction of intergalactic war and its futuristic weaponry is where author Wells excels. The astrophysics and engineering of such advanced technology is at once mind-boggling and wholly believable. As E.E. Smith's works (1890 - 1965) that explored the universe outside of our solar system with fictional technologies, extra-dimensional beings, and time travel before NASA, string theory, or the Hubble Telescope, the "Darklight" series take readers beyond the confines of the known universe and into mind-boggling technologies that venture into multi-dimensional applications of universal cataclysmic potential.Warfare comprises much of the story, with telepathic and directed-energy combat filling the gaps between massive, planet-destroying battles. Brisk pacing keeps readers enthralled as other ancient species join the fight, and each apparent victory sees a new threat emerge--none more so than the thousand-mile-long rift in space created by the increasingly powerful weaponry used on both sides.Wells explores the connection of life with the ultimate fate of the universe itself and sentient life's connection to that fate in his "Darklight" series. When the godlike being that dwells on the other side of the rift raises the stakes to an unfathomable level, the stage is set for the next "Darklight" installment. If you enjoy E.E. Smith's space operas that influenced the first generation of computer war games, and (some say) the authors of "Earthlight," "Star Wars," "Babylon 5," and "Superman," then venture forth into the "Darklight" series to expand your universe.

In the time honored space opera style, the stage setting grows exponentially, with bigger battles, stronger villains, and ever more powerful weapons.Darklight two grew a bit too fast- by the end, the reader is left wondering, "What the heck is going on?? Where can this story possibly go from here?"The author left a lot of loose ends hanging, as well, obviously setting up for a third book. I just hope the next book uses a bit more restraint in the plot development...

Vivian doesn't feel like she fits in-never has. She lives alone in a house in North Dublin that her great-aunt left her. She has no friends, no job and few social skills. She knows she is different. Before they died, her parents used to tell her she was a 'changeling' who belonged to another world. Each day, she walks the streets of Dublin, looking for a way to get there, but she never finds one. After all, Dublin has a certain charm, but no actual magic. Instead of a way out, will Vivian find a way to feel like she belongs here in this world? Rooted in Dublin's Northside, Eggshells is a whimsical, touching story about loneliness, friendship and hope. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A real treasure By Suze Lavender Vivian isn't like most other people. She's living in a world where fairytales are part of reality, where personal hygiene isn't the most important thing in the world and where she's perfectly happy with her own company. She tries to be more social though. She's inherited her great-aunt's house and after her death Vivian needs to find a new balance, to make an every day life for herself that she enjoys. She reaches out to her sister, she tries to find a friend, but only one who's called Penelope, and she walks. She takes a different route every day and walks through Dublin. She thinks she's a Changeling and hopes she will be able to find a way back to the world she's originally from...Vivian is unusual and I love the way Caitriona Lally has portrayed her. She might be odd, but she's also lovely. She has a special mind which works a little differently and I loved reading about her world and the way she sees life. Vivian does find her friend. Penelope is sometimes too much for Vivian, but as they are friends they keep seeing each other and they have a couple of adventures together as well. One is a visit to Penelope's mother that doesn't go according to plan at all. I read this book with a smile on my face. The story is beautiful, Vivian is such an interesting main character. I enjoyed reading about her walks and about the things she's hoping to see mixed with what she actually sees.I liked reading about the way Vivian's mind works a lot. The sometimes simple and sometimes more complicated way she sees things is fantastic. I was so engrossed in the story that it almost felt like I was her every now and then. I think Caitriona Lally has an amazing talent. She can write about a topic that makes people think about so many different things in an enjoyable way. I love her wit and cleverness. I noticed things I wouldn't normally pay attention to because of the way Vivian sees the world. Eggshells is special. I loved all the little details that for me made Vivian's world come to life even more. Details like her sickly goldfish which she therefore calls Lemonfish, the way she washes herself, the description of the scents that are important to her, the way she makes herself feel comfortable, the fact that she has a sister who's also called Vivian and so many other things which in my opinion are making the story great. Eggshells is a real treasure, it's a book I want to hug.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Life from a humourous and vivid perspective. By C. Burke This is a totally charming story! Caitriona uses beautiful and colourful descriptive language to illustrate the story of Vivian who does not fit into the world with any great ease. Vivian looks at life from a perspective different to anyone else whom she knows. She is misunderstood. She is not afraid to try to be what she thinks she is - a changeling looking for her right path. It is localised in Dublin, bringing me to consider some likeness to the writing of Joyce and Beckett, particularly in the language style and the free association. The roads and streets of Dublin come to new life as do the people on the streets as we walk and travel with Vivian. I look forward to the next book from Caitriona Lally.

He talks in depth about each camera setting, how they work and how to use them, and how they relate to each other. Then there is an entire chapter devoted to all of the qualities of light including adding in flash. The final chapter covers processing images. There are also several exercises throughout the book to get you thinking. A solid book for those new to photography.I received this book in order to review.

The concepts are broken down with good illustrations and analogies that the reader will understand. In depth look at aperture and shutter speed gives the reader a good foundation to better comprehend exposure. Good photographic examples to illustrate the differences in exposure settings. Problem Solving Exercises are a good idea for the end of chapters but could have been limited to one or two per chapter and gone more in depth with each question. I will recommend this book to students who want to learn more about about Mastering Exposure.I received this book in order to review it.

By Let's Compare Options Preptorial That includes 70 year olds, if you at least smile at the "matrix" and wonder how human nature, including "spirituality" (ok, psychic abilities, since this author is a scientist), might evolve over eons to come!To answer a couple reviews: yes, this IS non fiction, no, it's not a novel or "sci fi" fiction story, HOWEVER, any futuristic - speculative book (even non fiction) will be by definition a blend of sci fi and science. The plausibility of a futurist book depends on one of two things: 1. How much we can suspend our disbelief due to the pure enjoyability of the presentation and ideas and 2. How well grounded they are in hard science. That blend makes or breaks a futurist author, and this portends to be a classic-- outstanding science, but the courage to go WAY far forward to imaginitive potentials in robotics, medicine, economic solutions, and yes, a human that looks a lot more Godlike/ angel-like than animal. The conjectures ARE believable, but more importantly, thoughtful, fun and way entertaining. Whether you just need an inexpensive page turner/ thought provoking time filler or actually plan/ create/ discover for the future, you'll find the ideas innovative and relevant.Thankfully, the author stays relatively scientific, instead of veering off into "save the green" ideologies (right or wrong) like the Day the Earth Stood Still reprise. I personally like my futurism without politics (we get enough of that on MS NBC and FOX). Yes, there are "path integral" solutions and choices that show better vs. worse choices for more glowing futures, but we all like to concentrate on things we think we can DO something about (missles vs. meteors?) as opposed to politically spun "you won't get this wonderful future unless you vote for..." THANK YOU for not going there! There are several books out right now that just "extend" genetic engineering, robotics, virtual reality, etc. and give some alternatives. This is much better than that-- the author has some truly surprising twists that exhibit extreme creativity, insight and genuine vision. For the price, or on Kindle, if you enjoyed the Matrix, Blade Runner, Minority Report, Avatar... or watching Sagan with his billions and billions-- you'll love it. If you're a sci fi writer, producer, artist... this one's a MUST, at any price.Library Picks reviews only for the benefit of Amazon shoppers and has nothing to do with Amazon, the authors, manufacturers or publishers of the items we review. Well written - I'd also tag the book: "A Tranhumanism road-map" By Cly3d I was made aware of Human Race to the Future, via Facebook and the LifeBoat Foundation Website. After reading through the book, I would also recommend it have a tag-line "A Transhumanism road-map" or similar. What I liked most about the book is the macro lens it uses when putting science and humanity in perspective. Daniel's writing does not lose focus of the larger picture.Whereas some books get bogged down in minutiae, quickly losing the interest of all but the most pedantic, Daniel's writing shines and the book keeps you interested in wanting more.Is it a page turner in the classic sense? No, but it is a page turner for readers who are fascinated by what the future holds. Then there's the generous sprinkling of humor. "Moontan" - basking under moonlight, brought a smile. A well balanced approach to keeping readers interested in the more serious subject matter distributed through the rest of the chapters. The table of contents is one of the good features of the book, offering a synopsis right at the start. A feature I will come to use more as I re-read the book.Oh yes, I will be re-reading The Human Race to the Future, as it offers a good selection of topics as reference to any hard science (fiction and non-fiction) writer. For those involved in designing World and evolution simulations to run on computing platforms, the book offers some insights via the topics touched on, that sometimes go amiss by programmers.I also recommend reading the book's indepth review by Alireza Hejazi:http://www.academia.edu/3559281/Book_Review_The_Human_Race_to_the_Future

Author Dr. Daniel Berleant has the vision to actually project a possible future ranging from the near-present to many millions of years from now. In addition, his bold, long-range projections appear to be entirely feasible. Thus, his excellent contribution to futurism is novel due to its tremendous breadth founded upon sound feasibility. His book covers many vital, exciting areas of discussion, and he ingeniously manages to accomplish this kind of depth of thought in a fun, delightful and easy writing style. Importantly, despite some of the dire events that could manifest in the future, Dr. Berleant offers ways to overcome very challenging and potentially fatal obstacles. 'The Human Race to the Future: What Could Happen - and What to Do' has the makings of a classic.

The Fox Chase (The Adventures of Pettson and Findus), by Sven Nordqvist

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—The Fox Chase was originally published in the United States in 1989 and has been out of print for some time. This particular volume in the series deals with Farmer Pettson and his cat Findus devising a convoluted scheme to scare away a fox that is a potential threat to their chickens. Gun-toting neighbor Gustavsson would prefer to exterminate the animal. Pettson builds a chicken decoy; a balloon inside is filled with pepper. He attaches strings of fireworks on one long fuse and a rope and pulley system so Findus can swing through the air in a ghost costume. The scheme ends with the fox running into the house for shelter and being surrounded by angry chickens, while Gustavsson finds himself on the receiving end of the booby traps. Neither one will bother the chickens again, and the fox's life is spared. The dialogue between Pettson and Findus is amusing, and the illustrations are charming. Findus appears in his baggy, single-strapped overalls sometimes four or five times on a page—playing croquet, peeking out from a cabinet, or putting a blanket on a sleeping chicken. Children can pore over the details on these pages repeatedly and still not catch all the humorous touches. VERDICT These two endearing characters will be remembered and asked for again and again.—Grace Oliff, Ann Blanche Smith School, Hillsdale, NJ

Review "These two endearing characters will be remembered and asked for again and again."– Grace Oliff, School Library Journal"Full of details for children to discover, particularly in Pettson’s workshop, the artwork creates different moods in different scenes, all building up to the wildly expressive double-page spread depicting the climax...A satisfying narrative that kids will enjoy again and again."- Carolyn Phelan, Booklist"The folk-tale quality of the story lends it down-home flavor, and the banter between farmer and cat is a large part of the fun. But the real cleverness lies in the lively, intricately detailed illustrations...These two comic characters are sly as any fox―and endearing to boot."- Kirkus Reviews

By Gitte My 3 children, my husband and I have read and reread this book countless times, and even the adult fraction has enjoyed it every time. This is a rare event! An old man living by himself in a farmhouse with his cat, his hens, and a selection of strange tiny creatures, well, if that sounds less than interesting, try to find the book and you'll see! The story of how the old man and his cat scare off the fox (and, incidentally, their neighbor with his gun)is imaginative, funny and very charming, and just the right length for at bed-time story. And the illustrations are unique: beautiful and full of surprising, sometimes absurd, details that make the children laugh, and you too. I strongly recommend this book, as well as all the others about Mercury and Festus (for children aged 3-7). If you can't find them: learn Swedish, you won't regret it.

So many little treasures. So far all the kids we know have really enjoyed it too. The story tells how the sometimes forgetful farmer and his cleaver cat outsmart a fox hunter, saving the hens and the frightened fox. Each page includes many funny little additions that a kid can search for: the mice taking a bath in a miniature tube, tiny animal houses hidden in the trees, etc. Much fun!

Paquin The big, colorful pictures on every page are packed with tiny details that will keep the interest of all ages. The stories are very exciting and endearing, and will keep the interest of children 5 years old and up (even boys!). It takes about 15-20 minutes to read through it slowly with the kids.I highly recommend this, and any other Sven Nordquist book to read wth your children.
