In middle age Roy, Henry and Donnie have drifted into comfortable ways of being until a shared tragic event leads them to consider their existence and they each realise that their comfortable space is also a prison. They start opening up their lives to new experiences but fall foul of an Establishment governed by a pervasive anti-terrorism agenda that is powerfully misused. We should not give away the plot of the book and the events that challenge the social order of the nation, leading to The Pensioners March on Glasgow, but we can mention some of the characters in the book. As well as Roy the retired factory worker, Henry a defected member of the landed class now professional gambler, and Donnie who is ex-army and clouded in mystery, there is Maureen, the bar manager and Rosie, her assistant and soul mate. There is also the gangster ‘Finn’ and his bodyguard ‘Adonis’; the lawyer, Mr Findlay Macsween still sharp at eighty years of age; Amjad and Mohsin the computer whiz kids; Nadira Khan, Professor at Oxford University and a Master of the Bench of Middle Temple; Chief Superintendent ‘Dingaling’; the very smooth Chief Inspector Aldo Perretti, an expert in interrogating terrorists; ‘The Beast’, not someone with whom to spend time in a prison toilet cubicle; the mystical Aonghas of Assynt. Oh, and the First Minister of Scotland.

SMOKY BACON CRISPS: Finding the Edge of Life, by Dave Mearns

About the Author In his working life as a British university professor Dave Mearns authored seven books in the area of psychotherapy. With sales approaching half a million copies and translations into twelve languages, his work is popular because he was able to bring out the humanity of the therapeutic relationship and the ways in which people struggled to escape from the life experiences, such as emotional abuse and trauma, that had imprisoned them. He has taken that same feel for the people and their development into two novels, Smoky Bacon Crisps: Finding the Edge of Life and Shadow State. An unusual feature of these books is that they are Action/Adventure novels where the three central characters are so-called ‘senior citizens’. Perhaps it is about time that literary fiction provided action hero models for their ‘senior’ readers! These are heroes who do not drift quietly towards old age but decide to take a stand against the abuses of political authority. Dave lives in a cottage in Scotland with his wife, Elke. Much of their time is devoted to touring the Scottish highlands in their motorhome and taking advantage of the Scottish ‘right to roam’ legislation that encourages trekking in any of its wilderness areas. They also find many reasons to visit their daughters and granddaughters in Surrey and Holland as well as following the fascinating current development of Scottish politics.

A most enjoyable novel By Julian I have deeply enjoyed every page of this novel, and strongly recommend it to readers of all ages.I rarely give myself time for fiction reading during the week, given work and family commitments. Reading "Smoky bacon crisps" was an exception. Its main characters are described with so much love and sensitivity, that soon after starting reading it I felt very close to them, and found myself missing them every time I was away from the novel.By the end of it, I wanted to fly to Glasgow and have a pint with them at the Culloden (the pub where they regularly meet) myself!

The epic tale of an endangered Newfoundland community and the struggles of one man determined to resist its extinction.

The scarcely populated town of Sweetland clings to the shore of a remote Canadian island. Its slow decline has finally reached a head, with the mainland government offering each islander a generous resettlement package― the only stipulation being that everyone must leave. Fierce and enigmatic Moses Sweetland, whose ancestors founded the island, is determined to refuse. As one by one his neighbors relent, he recalls the town’s rugged history and its eccentric cast of characters. For fans of The Shipping News, Michael Crummey’s prose conjures up the mythical, sublime world of Sweetland’s past amid a storm-battered landscape haunted by local lore. In a spare style that belies “huge emotional depth and heart” (Celeste Ng, author of Everything I Never Told You), Crummey masterfully weaves together the past and present, creating in Sweetland a spectacular portrait of one man’s battle to survive as his world vanishes around him.

Sweetland: A Novel, by Michael Crummey

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, January 2015: There’s a quietness to Michael Crummey’s novel that adds to its power. Sweetland is about a man, Moses Sweetland, who lives on an island off of Newfoundland. The island itself is called Sweetland, named by Moses Sweetland’s ancestors, and it’s a dying place. In fact, the entire population has been offered a lump payment by the government to remove themselves from the island. There are only two holdouts to the deal: the village idiot and the sixty-nine year old Moses Sweetland. What’s most appealing about this subtle, entertaining, and quietly moving novel is the humanity of its characters and the genuine feel of Sweetland itself. Each character is real and truly imagined; it’s the kind of book and the kind of place where many readers will just want to linger. Communities like Sweetland, with their specific ways of talking and being, are growing less common. Crummey’s book is a testament to those places and the people who live there. --Chris Schluep

Review “Masterful writing throughout.” (Minneapolis Star-Tribune)“Moses is a memorably strong-willed character… [Sweetland] also conveys the way that a sense of place is the product of relationships―among the living, with the dead, and, in Moses’s case, arising from intimate connections to land and sea.” (Publishers Weekly, Starred review)“Wry, touching, and filled with insights into the modern human condition, Michael Crummey’s spare and sturdy prose in Sweetland delivers a kaleidoscopic portrayal of a quirky island community forced to abandon their vanishing way of life. Ignoring government bribes and threats from his neighbors, the obstinate waterman Moses Sweetland defiantly chooses the isolation of his family home off the Newfoundland coast to become a present-day Robinson Crusoe: resourceful, irascible, wily, and wholly unforgettable.” (John Pipkin, author of Woodsburner)“An evocative portrait of a disappearing way of life, Sweetland is also a powerful rumination on what’s lost in letting go of the past―and the sometimes-unbearable cost of trying to hold onto it. Michael Crummey’s deceptively spare language perfectly matches the tiny island community at the novel’s center: beneath the quiet surface, there’s huge emotional depth and heart.” (Celeste Ng, author of Everything I Never Told You)“Impetuous and imperious, Moses Sweetland is an extraordinary, beautifully realized character, and the supporting cast―including Queenie Coffin, a chain-smoking romance-novel addict who hasn’t left her house in four decades; and the feral Priddle brothers, “Irish twins” born 10 months apart―are scarcely less so. But Sweetland, Crummey’s finest novel yet, reaches its mythic and mesmerizing heights only after the others depart, leaving Moses―a Newfoundland Robinson Crusoe who even encounters a Friday-like dog―alone on his eponymous island, bracing for a bitter winter both seasonal and personal.” (Macleans)

About the Author Michael Crummey is a poet and storyteller and the author of several critically acclaimed novels. His most recent book, Galore, won the Commonwealth Prize for Canada. He lives in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

47 of 50 people found the following review helpful. this book was a great read. By aprilia I actually give this a 4.5 (I thought the ending was somewhat belaboured) but generally speaking, this book was a great read...Michael Crummey succeeded in bringing you into the nooks, crannies and countryside of Sweetland. His mastery of the local language transported you right into the living rooms and local shops of the Sweetlanders. His research related to the sea and the boats and the fishing done off the coast of Newfoundland, his detailed imagery of the island and its people and the ghosts that seemed to float around naturally, brought you right onto the cliffs and craggy outposts. The story of Moses Sweetland is a bitter sweet one...a man whose life had never been easy, yet his love of the island where he was raised remains with him till the bitter end. A survivalist by nature, he hopes to prove to himself and to the islanders who are relocated to the mainland that you can take the people away, but you can never alter the connection they have to the place they had always called home. Sad, funny, brutal, tender...it's all there.

35 of 37 people found the following review helpful. Taste the salt cod, savour the dialect, and embrace the soul of Moses Sweetland. By Paige Turner Brilliant writing. Sensitive portrait of a beleaguered and loving yet stubbornly driven man who, forced by circumstance, pushes against that which conspires, and conspired, against him. Moses' world is conceived brilliantly - the intimidating features of the physical environment, the intimacy of a community where frank opinions are the norm, and the complexity of Moses interior musings and memories, are rendered with humour, delicious authentic dialogue, and a tender affection for the unique place that is Newfoundland. Moses Sweetland is a memorable character who absolutely embodies its indomitable spirit , "measured and made to the islands exact specifications."

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. This was a terrific, unusual book. By Trade'em up So, nothing much goes on in Sweetland, Newfoundland, right? Wrong! The author gets us to understand the limited life the folks on the island live, their small and large grievances and sorrows and who's really close to whom. The characterization is very good and some of the relationships deep. Everything changes when the government wants to reclaim the island, and former friends become enemies, and enemies find new reasons to care about someone. This book really searches the souls of those who think they can't leave, after a life there and nowhere else, and those who are ready to pick up and go. And, there are some surprises. Enjoy!

By BarbaraLyn As a member of a charity quilt group, we are always looking for ways to bind our quilted projects. This book gives me all the ways and some that are new to me.I have always known about self-binding, pillow casing and the “normal” or double fold French binding. This book also tells how to do two sided (a different color on each side), scrappy binding, irregular edge binding and flange binding.I am intrigued with the flange binding and plan to use it on the next quilt. This is like the French binding I do but there are two different sized pieces sewn together on the long edge. Then you fold it in half (again like the French binding). Sewn to the back and turned to the front so both colors show. You can even machine stitch in the ditch with this binding. It makes me think of piping when it is all done. Very pretty. As I am a very visual person, this is definitely my type of book as there are LOTS of graphics. Now I will know for sure I am doing it right. I can’t wait to share this information with my charity quilt gals."I received a free or discounted product in exchange for providing an unbiased review."

David Binder is a young, successful writer living in Chicago and suffering from writer’s block. He stares at the blank page, and the blank page stares back harder. So when his agent suggests maybe a lighter sophomore novel, maybe something genre that they can sell real quick and buy him some more time to pen his magnum opus, he’s quick to recall an old ghost story he once heard. With his pregnant wife and his young daughter in toe, he sets out for Tennessee with high hopes of indulging the local lore surrounding Virginia Beale, Faery Queen of the Haunted Dell and whiling away the summer away from life in the city. But as his investigation goes further and further, and the creaking of the floor boards grows louder and louder, the David Binder realizes he’s not only endangered himself, but also his wife and daughter.A stirring literary rendition of Tennessee's famed Curse of the Bell Witch, Little Sister Death skillfully toes the line between Southern Gothic and Horror and further cements William Gay’s legacy as not only one of the South’s finest writers, but among the best that American literature has to offer.

Little Sister Death, by William Gay

Review Praise for Little Sister Death"A mixture of Flannery O'Connor and Stephen King...as if Faulkner had written The Shining." —Kirkus Reviews"a lovely small vessel of unease salvaged from a deep river" — The New York Times"The late William Gay is pure Tennessee Gothic. He is what Cormac McCarthy would have become if he had stayed in Tennessee writing about murder, incest, necrophilia and backwoods love. It’s hard to find writing this dark that feels this authentic." —James Franco"William Gay’s Little Sister Death is a dark, shimmering gift to readers. Marshaling all his monumental narrative powers and with prose as sharp and glittering as a scythe, he brings a tale so sinister, lush and spellbinding, it haunts your dreams long after you reach its final pages." —Megan Abbott, author of The Fever and Dare MePraise for The Long Home“…a writer of remarkable talent and promise…eminently worth talking about.” –The New York Times Book Review“Gay has created a novel of great emotional power.” –Denver Post“It’ll leave you breathless…” –Rocky Mountain NewsPraise for Provinces of Night“Earthily idiosyncratic, spookily Gothic…an author with a powerful vision.” –The New York Times“An extremely seductive read.” –Washington Post Book World“Southern writing at its very finest, soaked through with the words and images of rural Tennessee, packed full of that which really matters, the problems of the human heart.” –Booklist“A writer of striking talent.” –Chicago Tribune“Almost a personal revival of handwork in fiction—superb—must be listened to and felt.” –Barry Hannah“This is a novel from the old school. The characters are truly characters. The prose is gothic. And the charm is big.” –The San Diego Union-Tribune“Writers like Flannery O’Connor or William Faulkner would welcome Gay as their peer for getting characters so entangled in the roots of a family tree.” –Star Tribune (Minneapolis)“[A novel] about the preciousness of hope, the fragility of dreams, interwoven with a good-sized dollop[ of biblical justice and the belief that a Southern family can be cursed.” –The Miami Herald“Plumbs the larger things in life….The epic and the personal unite seamlessly.” –Milwaukee Journal Sentinel“An old-fashioned barrel-aged shot of Tennessee storytelling. Gay’s tale of ancient wrongs and men with guns is high-proof stuff.” –Elwood Reid“A finely wrought, moving story with a plot as old as Homer. Sometimes the old ones are the best ones.” –The Atlanta Journal-Constitution“William Gay is the big new name to include in the stories annals of Southern lit.” –Esquire“A plot so gripping that the reader wants to fly through the pages to reach the conclusion…but the beauty and richness of Gay’s language exerts a contrary pull, making the reader want to linger over every word.” –Rocky Mountain News“Gay is a terrific writer.” –The Plain DealerPraise for I Hate To See That Evening Sun Go Down“William Gay is richly gifted: a seemingly effortless storyteller…a writer of prose that’s fiercely wrought, pungent in edtail yet poetic in the most welcome sense.” –The New York Times Book Review“One perfect tale follows another, leaving you in little doubt that Gay is a genuine poet of the ornery, the estranged, the disenfranchised, crafting stories built to last.” –Seattle Times“A writer of striking talent.” –Chicago Tribune“Gay confirms his place in the Southern fiction pantheon.” –Publishers WeeklyEvery story is a masterpiece…in the Southern tradition of Carson McCullers, Flannery O’Connor, and William Faulkner.” –USA Today“[A]s charming as it is wise. Hellfire—in all the right ways.” –Kirkus Reviews“[Gay] brings to these stories the same astounding talent that earned his two novels…devoted following.” –Booklist“Supple and beautifully told tales…saturated with an intense sense of place, their vividness and authenticity are impossible to fake.” –The San Diego Union-Tribune“Gay writes about old folks marvelously…[His] words ring like crystal…” –Washington Post Book World“As always, Gay’s description and dialogue are amazing…Writing like this keeps you read.” –Orlando Sentinel“After two stunning novels that combined the esoteric language of Cormac McCarthy with the subtle humor of Larry Brown, Gay delivers concise craft work in his first short-story collection….Much in the same way Erskine Caldwell created slice-of-life Southern stories that were full of humor, conflict, and even forbidden sensuality many years ago, so now does William Gay.” –The Oregonian“[Gay’s] strong words never fail to paint a precise picture….Fans of his novels will find lots of meaty reading here.” –The Montgomery Adviser“Gay’s characters come right up and bite you….[His] well-chosen words propel the reader straight through his 13 stories.” –The Denver Post“Even Faulkner would have been proud to call these words his own.” –The Atlanta Journal Constitution“Gay captivates with bristling tales of old men, bootleggers, and wife-beaters in rural Tennessee…his prose is as natural and pure as it comes.” –Newsweek“This book will have you laughing, fearful, and utterly filled with suspense—often all within the same well-crafted story.” –Southern Living“A literary country music song….With deft and lyrical prose he captures the poignancy of loss, isolation and double-fisted grief, of disappointment, rage, jealousy, violence, and heartbreak.” –GoMemphis.comPraise for Twilight“Think No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy and Deliverance by James Dickey...then double the impact.” –Stephen King on naming Twilight the best book of 2007 in Entertainment Weekly"There is much to admire here: breathtaking, evocative writing and a dark, sardonic humor." – USA Today“William Gay brings the daring of Flannery O’Connor and William Gaddis to his lush and violent surrealist yarns.” –The Irish Times“This is Southern Gothic of the very darkest hue, dripping with atmosphere, sparkling with loquacity, and with occasional gleams of horrible humor. To be read in the broadest daylight.” –The Times

This is a true gothic novel. There is atmosphere, ghosts, and the darkness of the human heart. Plus, I love stories where the main character is a writer. There are some other reviewers here who said that the novel didn't feel complete, but to me it did. The ending is very typical of a gothic novel. I don't want to give the ending away, but it did feel like the ending of "Turn of the Screw" or Stephen King's "Gerald's Game" (at least that's what it reminded me of), so if you like those, you'll like this book, too. Actually, I like Little Sister Death more than those other titles I just mentioned. To each his own, I suppose. However, if you're a William Gay fan or a fan of classic gothic novels, I'd definitely recommend this gem. Also, I really enjoyed the biographical information on William Gay in Tom Franklin's introduction.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. READ WITH DREAD LATELY? By Lisa DuMond Here's your chance to feel that uncertainty again. That questioning if it just might be too late to turn the next page; you do have to get up in the morning and it is after nine...Let me help prep you to really appreciate the atmosphere William Gay created in this, his only gothic ghost story. Surf over to Bing or your search engine of choice and look up the Bell Witch Legend, Tennessee's very OWN ghost story and the inspiration for this one. Take in the scary, skin-crawly details, because this is a nasty one. And you're about to jump into what Gay's mind made of that jumping-off point.Putting it plainly? It's a doozy.Oh, and this is definitely not the kind of story you want to read to your kids. Adults only here.Remember a little book titled The Shining? Maybe it's just me, but ever since then, when a writer takes his family off somewhere to jumpstart his writer's block I tense up. When he takes them in search of a nasty witch tale my guts start to gurgle. David Binder is that man in search of a story and he is heading back into his past to find the legend that has been, forgive me, haunting me all his life. And this is going to be the story that gets him back on the bestseller lists. It is quite a story. You can see why he wants to mine it for the gold barely buried there. What you see in the opening section though, makes you doubt that anyone should poke that with a stick. Violence, perversion, unanswered questions -- of course, Binder thinks heading to ground zero of this horror story is going to get him the good stuff. What it quickly gets him is in over his head.Sorry, if I tell you anymore it will spoil it for you and the last thing you want is to miss out on William Gay's venture into an area he never took to before. His deep roots in the South serve him beautifully. The amazing way he took our language and lovingly molded it into his own unique regional art. This is the Gay you know and then some. Just be ready for that sense of dread to pull you along to the final breathless word.-----------------Psssst!While you are relishing this discovery, listen to the truly terrifying part: just how close this book came to being a ghost itself. One man, archivist/editor Michael White, refused to let his late friend's work vanish, wading hip deep into decades of handwritten pages, notebooks, and fragments of stories. Without his exhausting, often frustrating, work many of William Gay's best works, including LITTLE SISTER DEATH would have been lost to time. True to form, he refuses to take any credit. Here, Michael, is a just the thinnest slice of recognition. You don't want it but, truly, I think even Gay would say you richly derserve it. Take a bow. We promise not to look.

It is said that the manuscript was found among his papers after his sudden death and maybe that was part of the problem, maybe he hadn't polished it. But I think just as likely it was the mixing of genres that may have thrown me off a bit - wherein he brings up the legendary Bell Witch story and thus the book jumps between the 1800s and the 1980s wherein the protagonist, a writer is researching the Bell Witch story to fictionalize in a new novel he hopes will buy him time to write a more serious novel with a much better paycheck. There were instances where Gay hits his stride here but the structure I felt hurt the overarching story. When Gay is on, he hits perfect notes, and he's rarely off. I'll just say that if you're a fan of the late Mr. Gay's you'll probably want to do as I did and read this one and add it to your collection. And like most of his works, I always read them a 2nd and 3rd time so maybe on the 2nd reading of this one I'll get more from it.

This is not a beginners book, but great for intermediate users. I would recommend this book for anyone looking for some easy patterns of for a refresher.

I'm allergic to codes but reading this did not trigger an episode lol By Jam Diaz Prior to reading this book, I’ve read another programming book, PHP Programming by Giggle Publishing, as an effort to try and understand my partner’s work and his obsession to anything computer-related. And though these books are still jargons to me, I am still not giving up in my quest to finally make use of these techniques in my future projects. That is if I really take the time to understand them. Lol Well for starters, this is not for the SPECTATORS like myself, as the author adamantly pointed out in the book’s introduction. This will best suit readers that already have a background in programming or at least familiar with it. I cannot vouch for the effectiveness of the techniques being used in this book including the codes etc. as I am not a tech-wizard but what caught my attention is how well this book was written in such a way that every grammar Nazi would applaud this author. I also like how the author tried to downplay the complexity of the topic by providing a sample situation and a step-by-step action on how to achieve it along with a diagram to better visualize the flow of actions being taken. Again, I cannot vouch for the effectiveness of the techniques being introduced in this book but for the format and its execution, this is worthy of a 5-star rate! :)

The plan included is also found in his other books but the history of the different artists who carved in the flat plane style and the examples he shows are very complete. Harley Refsal is a real source of information on this art form.Glad I bought it

Lynn Gave this as a gift to a colleague who was a student of Harley Refsal at Luther College ... in a course on the Norwegian language. He loved it as has his family. I took a course from Harley at the John C. Campbell Folk School in NC and think he's a great teacher. Happily I have a copy for myself as well!

I took his class last November at Vesterheim in Deborah, Iowa, and hope that I can make a return visit this year. One of the best things about Harley, whether in person or in one of his books, is that he is the consummate teacher. All is clear, boo-boos can be worked around, and the finished product is something your friends never will believe you fashioned. Smiles all around (amid the bandaids, but that's OK, too).

Sara Jaffe's engrossing debut novel, Dryland, is a smart coming-of-age novel that charts the murky waters of adolescence.

Anything can happen when Julie hits the water.

It’s 1992, and the world is caught up in the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the Balkan Wars, but for Julie Winter, 15, the news is noise. In Portland, Oregon, Julie moves through her days in a series of negatives: the skaters she doesn’t think are cute, the Guatemalan backpack she doesn’t buy at the craft fair, the umbrella she refuses to carry despite the incessant rain. Her family life is routine and restrained, and no one talks about Julie’s older brother, a one-time Olympic hopeful swimmer who now lives in self-imposed exile in Berlin. Julie has never considered swimming herself, until Alexis, the swim team captain, tries to recruit her. It's a dare, and a flirtation―and a chance for Julie to find her brother, or to finally let him go.

Dryland, by Sara Jaffe

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—Fifteen-year-old Julie Winter is just plodding through life. Her family and weekends are boring, her best friend is becoming more boy-crazy, and she doesn't find the skater boys cute. Things begin to change when Alexis starts paying attention to her in yearbook class and eventually convinces her to join the swim team. It would be great, but swimming reminds her of her brother who lives in Germany and who missed qualifying for the Olympics by seconds. Julie also meets mysterious Ben, who seems to know a lot about her and her brother, including why he really disappeared. Soon, Julie is trying to navigate a new life and her blossoming feelings for Alexis. Setting the story in 1992 Portland, OR, during the confusing height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic helps convey the unsteadiness that Julie feels as she navigates high school in this tumultuous time. She's trying to sort out why her brother disappeared and why no one talks about it. By joining the swim team, Julie struggles to figure out how to live from underneath his shadow. Complicating matters further is the budding relationship she may or may not have with Alexis. Teens will connect with Julie's crushing emotions of uncertainty, and they will feel frustrated when she doesn't get the help she needs from those around her. VERDICT A solid addition for libraries looking to strengthen their collections with fiction about the LGBTQ experience.—Faythe Arredondo, Tulare County Library, CA

Review “Its title notwithstanding, this moody coming-of-age novel is soaked in the damp of Oregon winters and poolside locker rooms. Julie, a high-school student, joins the swim team, hoping to orbit a female crush and to understand the disappearance of her brother, a former Olympic hopeful. She is exquisitely attuned to itches and aches―the constriction of a new bathing suit, the throb of a full bladder. Only the pool releases her to a dimension 'like sugar, like a dream.' Jaffe’s meticulous, frank texturing keeps the sex talks and scenes from sinking under tropes of adolescent awakening and presents queer desire as just one of Julie’s innumerable, unstoppable sensations.” (The New Yorker)“Jaffe's directness of style . . .lends itself well to the emotional tenor of adolescence.” (New York Times Book Review)“Sara Jaffe is a damn fine writer and an important new voice.” (Justin Torres, author of WE THE ANIMALS)“Jaffe’s exceptional debut, a heartfelt coming-of-age story set in Portland, Ore., in 1992, exquisitely captures the nostalgia and heartbreak of youth.” (Publishers Weekly, STARRED REVIEW)“A coming-of-age story about a young girl’s growing awareness―of sexuality, loss, and family truths. . . . [W]e relive the awkward agonies of adolescence, so well-sketched by Jaffe . . . Moving sideways with its weight of secrets, this novel never strikes a false note.” (Kirkus)“A solid addition for libraries looking to strengthen their collections with fiction about the LGBTQ experience. ” (School Library Journal)“The chronicle of a teenage girl in Portland circa 1992, it reads like My So-Called Life's Angela Chase cut with Annie Dillard, plus something all Jaffe's own.” (The Portland Mercury)“Dryland is a gorgeous, layered, meticulous, clamoring, beating heart of a thing about a sullen teenager swimming and not swimming, kissing and not kissing, in Portland in the days of grunge. It will make you want to swim there back there back twenty times without stopping.” (Sarah Marcus, author of GIRLS TO THE FRONT)“Remarkable. It’s realism, but its realism brushes ever so deftly against the allegorical, making the novel shimmer, part diary, part dream.” (Maggie Nelson, author of THE ARGONAUTS)“I love it. I don’t know that I’ve ever read a book that felt more sincere, that was so unbesmirched by knowing irony or commentary or authorial interventions. It’s a rare and sweet thing.” (Pete Rock, author of THE SHELTER CYCLE)“Sara Jaffe offers a coming-of-age story so steadily understated it'll ring incredibly true to those of us actually of age.” (Bustle)“Highly introspective, thoughtful, and compassionate, Dryland is an exacting and authentic coming-of-age story.” (Electric Literature)“Dryland is is a unique portrayal of teenage angst, as well as an interesting and sincere perspective on a young woman’s discovery of her own desires.” (Rain Taxi)“ Jaffe captures a perfect time capsule of an age when cassette tapes ruled and personal phone extensions were the closest thing to a smart phone but when growing up was still no easier than it is today.” (KGB)“Sara Jaffe's Dryland is a poignant coming of age novel set in the Portland of the early '90s, a fascinating debut.” (Largehearted Boy)“The chronicle of a teenage girl in Portland circa 1992, it reads like My So-Called Life's Angela Chase cut with Annie Dillard, plus something all Jaffe's own.” (Portland Mercury)“Achy in that way that nostalgia for the teen years is. Ethereal, shrouded in mist, like the Pacific Northwest the book is set in, seeming at once crisp and fuzzy. Like waking up from a really vivid dream.” (Keysmash)“...a powerful book with a unique voice.” (A Bookish Affair)“The real highlight of this month was Dryland by Sara Jaffe. It’s such a small book, and it packs a huge punch. It takes place in the 90’s, and somehow reminded me a lot of The Perks of Being a Wallflower ... It’s about swimming, and families, and growing up, and so many things in under 200 pages. Amazing.” (Read A Latte)

About the Author Sara Jaffe’s fiction has appeared in publications including Fence, BOMB, NOON, matchbook, and Paul Revere’s Horse. She co-edited The Art of Touring (Yeti, 2009), an anthology of writing and visual art by musicians drawing on her experience as guitarist for post-punk band Erase Errata. By Steph This novel moves like the water that Julie so desires to conquer when she joins the high school swim team – it’s smooth and warm (OK, maybe the school pool isn’t warm!), and the prose flows effortlessly. As one of the cover blurbs says, it truly does read like a diary and a dream. I absolutely, without a doubt loved this novel.Julie, the main character is just fifteen years old, and is coming of age, grappling with the departure of her older brother who was idolized in town for almost making the Olympics swim team. She’s also figuring out sex, friendships and the pecking order in high school. I loved how this book was formatted – without chapters--absolutely NO chapters--and in other books this would bother me immensely to not have a stopping point… and while there is dialogue, there are no quotation marks – it’s simplistic and it works very well. I fell in love with this quiet little book that I hope gets a whole lot of attention. Dryland is set in 1992 Portland, and while I was just out of college at the time, the grunge era was in full-force with flannel and Kurt Cobain, and people everywhere were nervous about getting AIDS – these themes play a big role in the book and reading it will definitely bring you back to what you were doing and how you were thinking in the early ‘90s.

The main character is one of the most believable I've read in contemporary literature. Her strained understanding of herself is nuanced, never heavy handed, and shot through with ambiguity. The writing is beautiful and rewardingly different. The characters are complex and multi-dimensional. And so is Jaffe's description of high school life. Highly introspective, thoughtful, and compassionate, Dryland is an exacting and authentic coming-of-age story. It was the best novel I read in 2015.

Its sensitivity was never self-indulgent. Its humanity was never self-conscious. It is subtle and literate. I couldn't recommend it more if I'd written it myself. Couldn't put it down.
