At first, I would recommend QlikTech own manuals and the book: 'QlikView 11 For Developer'. To strengthen knowledge, recommend 'Mastering QlikView'. And once you have secured this book knowledge 'QlikView Unlocked' it is a recommended reading. It has simple language and easily read if you're not bilingual.

It's apt and it describes the main character Andre Bergner. When I read the book it reminded me of Catcher in the Rye. Andre reminded me of Holden Caulfield if he grew up and went to work at The Global Bank, an organization that on the surface seems to be a source of good. It reminded me of all the people, including myself, when we were younger decided that one day we'll make a positive impact on this world. Oh how naive we were. Realities of how the real world sets in and before we know it we're stuck in the machine we despise.Andre feels his soul being taken away everyday he goes to work but he can't stop it so why not enjoy the perks that come with it. The nice lunches, vacations, and salary. All he's got to do is lie to himself. The only good thing in his life is wife Madison but when she gets cancer it makes him reevaluate his life and face the hard truths, that he has become a sellout and has done more harm in the world than good. With interesting characters and a good story that uses cancer as a catalyst without the melodramatic aspects, which is a big positive in my book and hard to do as a writer, sort of like Breaking Bad instead Andre Bergner tries to do good, it had me deep into the story and invested in it's main characters. This book made me think of my life and made me reflect on my goals and what I've done to be a better person. My hats off to the writer for writing a deep character analysis with an engrossing story. How could I ask for anything more? It was a beautiful read and I will come back and read this book in the future many times.

I was given a copy in exchange for a review. This book is a very quick read, on my e-reader it came in at 65 pages. But, WOW what an intense 65 pages!Without giving anything away, it is the story on a man coming to terms with the direction his life has taken and working to restore his integrity. It is not a lighthearted read by any means, but I think many people will identify with the main character. How many people have looked back on their lives and thought, "this isn't the way I had planned it"? The main character in Broken Dreamer is confronted by life events which force him to ask this question.Mr. Dhillon wrote this story in an interesting format. It reads almost as a stream-of-consciousness kind of monologue. It is a first person account voiced directly to the reader, I really liked this format. There is a lot of strong language, something I usually am not impressed by. However, in this setting it makes sense. Sometimes emotions are so intense there is no other way to express the depth of despair being experienced. So, be prepared, there are numerous f-bombs dropped. In the final analysis, Broken Dreamer a powerful redemptive love story. I think it would be hard to not be moved by the journey of the main character. If you are up for a short, but extremely powerful, few hours, Broken Dreams by H. Dhillon is the ticket. Enjoy!Mike

The deliberate early pacing has an almost autobiographical feel to it as the story unfolds in kaleidoscopic ways. The themes are both large and personal, conveying a sense of world-weariness, fear of loss and determination. It isn't romantic in the traditional sense, but it does portray elements of romance in singular ways. The story balances personal tragedy with major white-collar corruption, weaving elements of each. It is a stand-alone story, not really aiming to be a series, and this might be the strength of "Broken Dreamer": it has a sense of finality, placing much dramatic weight on the entire work.I originally gave it 4 stars because it isn't the kind of book I regularly read, but upon second thought, I feel comfortable thinking of it as a 5 star read. It broke new ground for me, kept me interested to the end and introduced me to a new writer I can follow in future works.

Key of Knowledge (Key Trilogy), by Nora Roberts

From Publishers Weekly Following hot on the heels of the first installment in Roberts's Key trilogy, this second book (following Key of Light) continues the story of three contemporary female friends chosen to free the souls of ancient demigoddesses called the Daughters of Glass. This time, the heroine is Dana Steele, a librarian who is sure that the key she's seeking lies in a book. As she begins her search, Dana renovates Indulgence, the gallery-cum-salon-cum-bookstore she is opening with her friends Malory Price and Zoe McCourt. She also spends sometimes passionate, sometimes vexing time with Jordan Hawke, the thriller writer who broke her heart years earlier when he abandoned her and their small Pennsylvania town of Pleasant Valley to seek fame in New York. Dana slowly realizes that the love they once felt for each other has not died-and that Jordan's writing is inextricably entwined with her supernatural quest. In the end, Jordan must join with Dana to fight the spells of the sorcerer Kane and fulfill the terms of her quest. Despite lots of special effects, Kane isn't powerful enough to create much suspense, and Dana is a surprisingly inefficient detective for one so bright. But Roberts's zesty characterizations and fresh, energetic style succeed in drawing readers into this far-fetched tale. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist *Starred Review* A mysterious invitation brings three strangers--gallery manager Malory Price, librarian Dana Steele, and hairdresser Zoe McCourt--to Warrior's Peak, a castlelike estate outside of Pleasant Valley, Pennsylvania, where their elegantly enigmatic hosts, Rowena and Pitte, offer the opportunity to participate in an unusual quest. Malory, Dana, and Zoe will each have 28 days to find one of the keys to a mystical box, which holds the trapped souls of three sister Celtic demigoddesses imprisoned by a jealous sorcerer. Key of Knowledge, the second book, following Key of Light, in Roberts' irresistible new trilogy, centers on Dana, whose search leads her to author Jordan Hawke, but their prior romantic history complicates things when the two of them are forced into working together to locate the next key. Roberts, the ultimate romance writer, has once again created a triptych that has all the sexy chemistry, sharp wit, and bliss-inducing pacing that her readers desire. 17 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Key of Knowledge By Kelly This second book in the Key series is Dana Steele's story. Her counterpart in the search for the second key is Jordan Hawke. Dana and Jordan have a long history. Jordan is Dana's brothers' best friend, so their relationship started out with friendship, but turned to love. He broke her heart when he abruptly left town after the death of his mother. Jordan has returned as a successful writer, but also with a history attached to Warriors Peak. He has always been fascinated with the old house, so much so that he based one of his best selling books on it.As Dana and Jordan search for the second key, it becomes apparent that they must resolve their past, and look into their future together if they are going to locate the second key. The evil foe Kane that was introduced in the first book, is playing dirty and deadly now.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Celtic gods in Pennsylvania By Paper or Kindle This is the second book of the Key trilogy, a paranormal series in which three women are chosen to save three Celtic goddesses who are trapped by a curse. It's a competent and pleasant read, but suffers from several flaws. The main one is that the three heroines and three heroes (particularly the heroes) are interchangeable with the characters of many of Roberts' trilogies and quartets. Only halfway through the book it was already impossible to remember what any of them looked like, and their dialog is also indistinguishable. I found it jarring when one woman used language suitable for a college graduate when she was described as having very little formal education. The androgynous names don't help: Jordan and Dana, or Dane, are the H/H of this book. Even the most intimate scenes are almost boiler plate from other books. The trapped goddesses are not fully brought to life; Roberts tells us, but doesn't show us, that they are young, beautiful, talented and innocent. End of story. I found it difficult to care about them and regard them as mere place holders for the plot. The guardians of the situation are more interesting, but you don't see enough of them. The best part of the book was at the end, when Roberts created a highly ingenious situation that entangled Jordan and Dana. This is an easy read that won't exercise your brain or remain with you once you've finished it.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. My favorite of the trilogy By S. Reader Maybe I just connected with Dana and Jordan because of their love for books, but I found their romance very realistic with mutual interests, a past history, and having to work through pain and misunderstanding to re-establish trust. Yes, Dana is very angry and that was sometimes off-putting, but anger often masks hurt, and Jordan had hurt her very deeply. Over the long haul, their banter worked for me.Although Dana sometimes seemed less intelligent or intuitive than one would think, it could easily have been the pressure that made things hard to see--that and her early antipathy for Jordan, whom I liked a great deal. I found her to be a more complex character than Mallory (Light) -- same for Jordan compared to Flynn.Although the dog got annoying (even in the first book) and the girl bonding was a bit overdone, the guys being guys made up for it. They were such fun to read about. This entry had the most humor to me. The finding of the key was, I thought, a unique take...much more a couple's thing than Mallory and Flynn.

The complete story of the world’s high-speed railways, from Japan’s bullet trains to HS2 via France, Germany, and China

Speed on steel wheels has fascinated engineers for nearly two centuries. When a team of French experts accelerated a train up to 574.8 km/h in April 2007 they proved that the rail speed frontier was still unknown. Japan and France pioneered high-speed train technology in the 20th century, and now China and South Korea are on the cusp of developing inter-city rail travel at 400 km/h. In Europe, expansion of the already extensive network of high-speed lines may be dogged by delays over costs and noise, but the USA lags far behind, already outpaced by new lines in Turkey, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia—pilgrims to Mecca will soon be riding the desert rails at 300 km/h. Charting the events that have shaped these remarkable developments, this illustrated book is railway history in the making.

It explains well, yet simply about the different mediums you can use to string beads ON.I'd recommend reading it all the way thru, THEN going back when you're ready to purchase supplies and again when you're ready to create!I'm a real novice and am at the stage where I have many off the supplies but may have gotten the wrong sizes crimp beads to actually get started with stringing...BUT, I have what I need to start using them in wire wrapping which is my primary interest anyway...Anyway, great book, especially for the price! Lots of helpful easily understood information!

This fascinating and detailed book is essential reading for all those railway modellers who wish to build their own wagons and vans.

After examining the types of modelling materials that are available and discussing the basic tools that are required, the author demonstrates how the modeller can move on from building simple kits to constructing more complicated kits in a variety of materials, including plastic, white metal and brass. He then considers how kits can be detailed, converted and significantly modified (often referred to as 'kit bashing') before covering the ultimate in rolling stock construction - scratch building.

Brimming with practical advice and tips, this remarkable book uses worked examples and step-by-step photographs to show what can be achieved with the application of research, patience and modelling skill. Moreover, although the volume deals with 00 gauge, the ideas and techniques discussed can easily be applied to other gauges/scales.

Rudolph Shines Again, by Robert L. May

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2—May penned the original tale of the plucky reindeer with the shining nose for the Montgomery Ward department stores to give away to customers in 1939, and it became a huge hit. In 1954 he published the sequel, originally titled Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Shines Again. A Little Golden Book version was also published in 1982. It's Christmas again, and Rudolph is having a hard time. His fellow reindeer and the elves are all jealous of him and treat him badly, which causes him to sulk and whine, and suddenly, his nose stops glowing. Thoroughly disheartened, he runs off to the woods, where he encounters a large and unhappy rabbit family, worried about their two missing children. Rudolph offers to search and uses his eyes and ears to avoid predators and find the lost bunnies. After he safely returns them, he decides to go back and help Santa any way he can, and because he's given up his whining and weeping, by the time he gets back to the North Pole, his glow has returned. Caparo's painterly illustrations are both lush and Disney-esque, and even the darkest images gleam with an internal light. Parents and grandparents will most appreciate the very evident moral of the tale. VERDICT An old-fashioned holiday story, presented in a most cinematic way.—Mara Alpert, Los Angeles Public Library

About the Author Robert L. May created Rudolph in 1939, when his company, the Montgomery Ward department stores, asked him to write a Christmas story that they could give away to customers. Drawing on the tale of “The Ugly Duckling,” Mr. May penned the story of a sweet, homely reindeer shunned because of his glowing red nose. Little did he know his creation was destined to become a Christmas holiday classic. Over the next few years, the company distributed millions of copies of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The book’s copyright was transferred to Mr. May in 1947, and under his ownership, Rudolph’s popularity soared. Commercial printings and cartoons quickly followed, and then, of course, came the song, which secured Rudolph’s place in Christmas history, and in our hearts, forever. Robert L. May died in 1976.Antonio Javier Caparo is a Cuban-born illustrator and designer. Although much of his early career was spent in graphic design, his passion for animation and comics led him to devote himself to illustration—both traditional and digital. He has been published around the world and has won numerous awards in multiple countries. He lives in Quebec, Canada.

The Perfect Culmination to the Rudolph Saga By Yi-Peng Most people only know the well-loved story of Rudolph either through the Johnny Marks song or the popular 1964 TV special. However, not many people know that Rudolph was created by a Montgomery Wards employee named Robert May, who also wrote two sequels to the original story. Surprisingly, this sequel, Rudolph Shines Again, was the only other Rudolph story published during his lifetime, apart from the posthumous sequel, Rudolph's Second Christmas. But this episode in the Rudolph story goes the furthest in allowing us to see Rudolph examine his character thoroughly and discover who he really is as a reindeer. This Rudolph story tugs at the heartstrings more than the previous two books at the beginning, because of how Rudolph feels for his sufferings amongst his reindeer companions who are so fed up with how Santa Claus always finds favour with him and not with them. Luckily, this heart-tugging does not go overboard because we learn that even though Rudolph loses his nose, he remembers that he has forgotten himself in thinking selfishly about it. It is there that we see a bit more character development in him and the story picks up its momentum of its own. Rudolph's willingness to find the two lost rabbits shows the heart he has for others, with shades of his adventures in the Second Christmas episode, and his selfless spirit of charity, and he still retains his inimitable character even when he realises he has regained his nose and does not need to elate over it with his emotions. The story is written with the same rhyming couplets that made the original Rudolph story so fresh, with many ingenous rhyming twists and felicitous touches in the story-telling, and with the resolution this finds at the end of all the three stories, this makes the perfect conclusion to the three Rudolph stories of Robert L. May.In conclusion, I feel prepared to say that this Rudolph story is as good as the other two, but does more in character development by allowing us readers to follow how Rudolph examines his real character while allowing his heart to glow as brightly as before. My one wish now is that it would be perfect and great if the three Robert May Rudolph stories were published in one book as a continuous Rudolph saga, and that reading the three individual episodes in this story will allow everyone to guide their sleighs to greater self-worth and self-esteem in a soul-stirring story.

May is an absolutely delightful Children's Rhyming Christmas picture book. This 10 1/4 inch by 12 1/4 inch, 32 page book is beautifully illustrated by Lisa Papp in the tradition of Walt Disney's Bambi. Each page is a beautiful full color illustration with the poem overlayed on every other and sometimes every page. The beautiful full color pictorial cover and the metallic dust jacket will suck in the attention of young children as well as older children and adults. From the big doe eyes of Rudlph and the big tears flowing down the rabbit's eyes to the stealthy wolves and owls in the dark forest, one immediately identifies with the emotions of the animals feeling sorrow, fear, love, joy and happiness and rejoicing. The beautiful rhyming poetry makes this book an ideal "read aloud" book for the classroom or the before bedtime session with your children.Rudolph had a unique gift, his red shining nose. Like all people with special and unique gifts from God, others sometimes feel jealousy and treat those with special gifts and talents badly. All the other reindeer resented and were jealous of Rudolph being chosen to lead Santa's sled and treated him very badly. Because of his leadership ability and special gift, Rudolph was resented and was given the messiest gluing to do in Santa's workshop. Rudolph was called upon to carry the heaviest loads of them all. When football was played, the other reindeer used Rudolph as the ball. Rudolph is very similar to each of us. When we meet with discouragement and resentment and jealousy we often begin to pout and whine and cry and most of all, develop self pity. Beacause of the self pity and selfish preoccupation with himself, Rudolph began to lose the most precious gift or talent he had -- his shining red nose. The more he pouted, the more he cried, the more he whined and the more he bathed in self pity, the less bright his nose became, until finally it didn't shine anymore. Like many of us, when faced with an obstacle, we have a tendency to run away from it. That is exactly what Rudolph does. In his journey into the unknown, Rudolph happens to find some rabbits who are in much worse condition than he. With big tears rolling down their faces, the rabbits explain that they lost their children - Donnie and Doris- in the dark and dangerous night forest. When Rudolph hears about their plight, he abandons his self pity, his whining and and his crying and seeks to find the lost rabbit children and reunite them with their parents. This is a life changing experience for Rudolph. You will want to read the book to find out how Rudolph's life changed and what wonderful things he did when he abandoned that demon of self pity.I usually don't care for books that do not carry the true meaning of Christmas i. e. the birth of Christ, however, this book teaches a most wonderful important life message and moral. I was absolutely touched by its deeper meaning. This is not your typical Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer Christmas Tale. It is much more than that!

Rudolph Shines Again By Joseph Gould Robert L May's Rudolph Shines Again is a sequel to the well known story we all know of the title character so the reader is immediately engaged with a known character. This helps draw in a wide range of audience, from adults to the very young. While the book is geared towards an age range of 3-8 years old, the underlying story is a bit more mature than the 3 year old would be able to relate to. Like the original story, this tale revolves around the personal sentiment of the main character. In the first story it was how others treated Rudolph because he was different, and how he internalized that. That story was more relatable to younger children as it represents the age when children begin to interact with others and form the initial relationships and understanding of reactions of their peers. This story focuses more on what happens when the value pointed out in the first begins to fade, bringing the internalized fears and concerns of self-worth back up. This sequel is really geared towards the older group, showing them how they can always discover value and self-worth themselves, with the added message moral of the author's point of view of finding worth in helping others. The artwork is compelling as it shows the emotion and innocence of the characters that are described in the words. It is an engaging story both through it's words and it's illustrations. The use of color is as much of the story as the words as they vary between color temperatures to reinforce the emotional temperature of the tale.

For most of the software and equipment design user stories will suffice to capture the stakeholder needs. Pinewood Derby Designs & Patterns: The Ultimate Guide to Creating the Coolest Car, by Troy Thorne

Review Toolmonger wholeheartedly recommends Pinewood Derby Designs & Patterns to anyone looking to introduce their children to woodworking and the shop via building a 'Derby car. This book will serve as an excellent guide to the entire process, and will dramatically improve your chances of turning out a winning car - regardless of your past carving and woodworking experience. This last weekend my neighbor and his son (age 7) invited my son, Decker (almost 5), to come and watch his Cub Scout Pinewood Derby race. If you're not familiar with this event, the Cub Scouts host a race every year where the participants take a standard block of wood and four plastic wheels and turn it into a pure racing machine or something else. It's been over 30 years for me, but I still remember my dad taking me out into the workshop and helping me use his bandsaw and sander to carve up my own car, #87. It wasn't much to look at, but it was mine. It still sits on a bookshelf in my office as a reminder of not only the race but also the time I spent with my dad at a very young age, learning to use some basic woodworking tools. Decker isn't quite old enough yet for the Cub Scouts, but he absolutely loved looking at the 100+ cars sitting on display for the judges to examine and weigh. All cars must weigh less than 5 ounces, but racers try to hit as close to 5 ounces as possible because the weight of the car affects its speed when it is released on the downward-pointing ramp. There were a lot of interesting solutions to getting the cars up in weight (the block weighs about 1.4 ounces and the wheels and paint add enough to bring it up to about 4.3 ounces so there's some wiggle room for embellishment and personalization of a racer's vehicle.) Races this day were performed 4 cars at a time. To ensure fairness, multiple races were performed with each car racing on a different track (1, 2, 3, or 4); I'm guessing this is done because maybe one or more tracks run faster or have a better/smoother surface. Whatever the reasons, each scout gets to see his car race multiple times. Awards were given out for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishes for different troops/ages as well as some design awards. In addition to taking my son, I also took along a set of 4 books provided to me by Fox Chapel Publishing that relate to the Pinewood Derby. I passed the books around to the various scouts and parents, letting them take a look at the information that I'd already read and discovered about creating a great racer. The first book, Getting Started in Pinewood Derby by Troy Thorne, is the clear choice for the beginning scout. It's a full-color book with some really detailed photos showing how to cut, carve, paint, and decorate your racer. There's advice on safety, tips on making the wheels run faster and smoother, help with getting your car to the proper weight, and a great little documentation section at the back for recording information about your racer such as race times and taping in some photos. You'll also find a small number of templates that can be cut out (or photocopied) and taped over the block of wood, helping you make the proper cuts to shape your block of wood into some really cool designs. Hands down, this is one of the best little books I've seen on basic woodworking skills, and I'm very impressed with the cartoon character of Dash Derby who provides tips and advice throughout the book on improving your racer's odds in the final race. The actual instructions in the book are written for a young reader, and I'm very happy to see that Thorne wrote the book not for the parent, but for the scout - simple language and short sentences for each full color photo make it easy to follow along and tweak your racer's wheel alignment, decal placement and many other racer details. The book follows loosely the format of a comic book in many sections, with balloon windows showing a step and POW BANG BAP sound effect graphics added for fun. This 96 page book is the perfect gift for any new Cub Scout, but honestly the book is pure fun and would make a great parent/child project for any weekend. I'm already planning on visiting the scout supply store here in Atlanta and obtaining the block/wheels kit because Decker asked after the event if we could make a car. Actually, I plan on buying two kits one for him and one for me. Why my own kit? Because of the next book. Pinewood Derby Designs & Patterns is another book by Troy Thorne. This 118 page book follows a similar format as the previously mentioned book, but this one is all about variety. It does have some additional woodworking tips and advice, but these are scattered throughout the book and picked up depending on the type of racer you wish to create. The racers in the Getting Started in Pinewood Derby book are great, but if you've got a child looking to create a real eye-catching racer, this is the companion book you'll want to grab. I'm not kidding - some of the designs in this book are almost unbelievable given that they all start with a single small block of wood. And the painting and decal applying tips are much more advanced in this book, but still within the skill range of any young child with some adult supervision. Much of the design work in this book is done using a Dremel or similar rotary powered tool, and one look at some of the car shapes in its pages will tell you that a small coping saw won't be enough. That said, you can still do all the major cuts with a basic saw and then switch to the rotary tool for the more detailed shaping. At the back of the book you'll once again get some templates for a variety of designs including a Mini Cooper, a NASCAR stock car vehicle, an Army Jeep, a Ferrari, and a couple of classic jalopies. (The Stock Car and Army Jeep are unbelievable in their details, but just take a look at the cover to see the #37 Red Racer with exposed carburetors and exhaust to get an idea of just how crazy this book takes the subject of design.) But let me repeat my earlier statement - after reading through this entire book, there is nothing in here that a scout couldn't do with help from a parent. Kids age 7 or 8 and up should be able to do much of the work themselves if they read the instructions carefully and have an adult on hand to help with the more dangerous tools. And by the way, the section on applying decals is excellent - I've always wondered how one might go about applying custom color designs and the information on the use of tape, wax paper, and a few other tools is well worth the price of the book alone. The third book turned out to be the most popular - I had a lot of parents and kids writing down the title and a few asking if they could borrow it for a few days. It's titled Pinewood Derby Speed Secrets and it's written by David Meade (and illustrated by Troy Thorne). This book is all about the competition, but it's got some really amazing bonus items such as a great little essay in the front on the history of the Pinewood Derby. It's so cool to see photos of the early days of this event as well as the typical design and look of the earlier racers. There's also some great advice for parents early in the book about working with your child, teaching them concepts of racing (such as aerodynamics, potential energy, friction, and inertia) and discussing some pros and cons of design. (I never really gave much thought to the shape of the nose, but the author makes a solid point in explaining why you don't want a tapered nose on your car - lesson learned.) The first project in the book is called The Winning Car and it's a beautifully shaped vehicle that looks almost like my original car so many years ago (it's the red racer in the back on the cover. It's a tapered design and I believe most kids would be able to build this racer on their own. What's nice is that this basic racer is used to teach so many tool and woodworking techniques that are then used again throughout the book. Two additional racers (The Champion Car in the middle on the cover and The Ultimate Car, the yellow vehicle at the front on the cover) are covered in detail and then additional chapters cover wheel and axle preparation. This book, however, has the ultimate tips and advice on wheel prep in my opinion, and I'm blown away by the time spent on prepping the wheels to run smoother and faster and the techniques used. The book finishes up with some great full-color examples of other racers as well as a handful of new templates that can be copied and glued onto a block for cutting and shaping. Finally, the last book I shared with the parents and scouts was the Pinewood Derby Workbook & Logbook by Troy Thorne. This short 32 page book is a real eye-catcher. Full color photos of some car ideas adorn the inside cover and then the book offers up a variety of workbook pages that allow your young racer to document things such as their prototype design sketches using some graph paper templates. Other templates allow you to transfer your side and top prototype designs to a wraparound templates that can be cut out and taped or glued to the block for the actual cutting and shaping part of the project. There are templates for designing the car's color and decal placement (the back inside cover has a large assortment of full-color patterns for the car's color scheme) and a really useful page for recording the weights of all the individual pieces prior to assembly - shaped and painted block, four wheels, four axles - so you can determine the amount of extra weight you need to add to bring the car up to 5 ounces. Then the workbook moves on to pages that allow you to troubleshoot alignment by recording various test runs and writing down your observations about the car's behavior. The book finishes up by providing some Race Day logs for recording the Lane # and the Time and Position of your racer. Some tips and reminders for race day are included in a small checklist so you don't forget things like glue, graphite, screwdriver, tape, camera, and pen or pencil. The last few pages includes a place to glue or tape in photos of your car in the various building stages and record details about your car, your friends' cars, and the race results of the day and, of course, your favorite memories about the event. A nice big page offers a place for a larger photo of your final vehicle. If you've got a Cub Scout or a young boy who will be joining the Cub Scouts soon, you're going to be swamped with information about all the events this organization puts together. But the Pinewood Derby event is one of the most memorable ones at least to my memory. It's not about winning, of course, but I have to admit that it's awfully fun to have a car that can really put on some speed and a good showing. Any of these books would make a great gift for a young scout or really any young child. Boy or girl, building a racer with your child is one of those projects that can be done in an afternoon and will be memorable to all involved. Even if you're not involved in the Cub Scouts, there's nothing to prevent you from designing a few racers and having your own race - there are instructions and vendors all over the Internet for putting together your own track, so don't let that stop you. Decker's not letting up on his request to build a racer, so I've got to get over to the scout supply store sometime this week so we can start on a couple of racers this weekend. I think I'm looking forward to it even more than he is not the final racer, but the time spent together.Pinewood Derby races are a classic childhood memory, an icon of American boyhood. They can be a challenge to a son's creativity--and to his dad's patience--making an incredible bonding experience for both of them. Dad dreams of the fastest car, while his son dreams of the coolest looking car. Excitement builds and plans start spinning as they wait to receive their Derby kit. For some, the excitement cools when they are faced with a small, plain block of light wood and tiny plastic wheels. What can be made from that? Troy Throne has written an awesome book that can tell you exactly what can be made from that! It's called Pinewood Derby Designs & Patterns: The Ultimate Guide to Creating the Coolest Car. The book is officially licensed by the Boy Scouts of America, and it offers so much more than a tutorial for Derby cars. The guide is written to the parents, providing them with everything they could possibly want to know from start to finish. I love that the introduction begins with a reminder of what the car creating process is really about. Safety and integrity are stressed throughout the book, with excellent suggestions and tips. I love that it is written at a level that anyone can understand, regardless of experience level. Detailed descriptions of the tools needed and how to use them are offered, with full-color photographs and very clear directions. At first, three basic designs are shared, with step-by-step instructions and a photograph for each step. Later, 31 amazing patterns are provided, with full-scale templates and even a page of decals. The amazingly detailed photographs and simple instructions make this guide very easy to follow. From preparation to Weigh-In, readers are given every detail in building, painting, and prepping their cars, even down to polishing the axles."The idea is to use the least amount of wood, with the most amount of weight in the back," Thorne says. LANCASTER COUNTY, PA - TROY Thorne has carved out a niche in cutting-edge race cars that fit in the palm of his hand. For anyone who has ever been a Cub Scout or the parent of a Cub Scout, Pinewood Derby cars will need no introduction. According to Wikipedia, this 54-year-old trademark event, held annually in school cafeterias and gymnasiums nationwide, is the most popular of all Boy Scout events, and it has spawned a large cottage industry of customizing supplies and information. In this book, author Troy Thorne, a graphic arts designer and father of a Cub Scout, has joined that club with a detailed, clearly-illustrated step-by-step "how-to" and idea book for wannabee race winners and their parents. The designs are gorgeous and, in many cases, quite elaborate, with high wings, flame decals, wire exhaust pipes, windshields and slick paint jobs. Thorne also shows several performance-enhancing tricks such as adding weight and polishing wheels and axles. The book is written directly to the parent, with the expressed intention that all the tricks and techniques in the book should be shared with and taught to the Cub in a rewarding and bonding experience for both. The book begins with a long, illustrated list of tools and supplies that will be needed to accomplish all the modifications described in the how-to chapters. Several of these were quite a revelation for me, as I was pretty naive about such things when my son was in Cub Scouts twenty years ago. I just showed him how to cut out interesting shapes with a coping saw and polish the axles with fine sandpaper and graphite. Granted, my son's entries weren't exceptional looking, and they never won top prizes, but they were his creations, not mine. Thorne takes the position that it's okay for dads (or moms, I suppose) to do a lot of the work, as the book illustrates procedures like using Dremel tools, a benchtop bandsaw, a scroll saw and airbrush equipment - equipment your average Cub isn't likely to have access to - with instructions like, "Provide a secure platform tha's a safe distance away from the front of the saw so your child can watch you cut and see how the saw works." He does say that all of the designs can be cut out with a coping saw, though, so the unspoken implication is that it is up to individual parents and Cubs to decide where to draw the line on parental involvement, as it always has been. I have no doubt that the average Cub Scout is clever and coordinated enough to learn most of the skills and awarenesses in this book, but the advantage clearly goes to the Cub whose father has the tools and skills to make all these embellishments possible. Moral quandaries aside, I think Pinewood Derby Designs & Patterns is a valuable book on small-scale model making that can benefit all kinds of woodworkers, young or old, Scout or not. If you happen to be the father of a Cub Scout who wants the fastest and fanciest Pinewood Derby car, this book will be of particular interest to you.TM reader Brenda wrote to ask where she might find help with teaching her son to make a Pinewood Derby car. And it's a great question: Where does a parent who's not that handy turn to give their kids the full Pinewood Derby experience? I can think of one suggestion: Start with long-time Toolmonger reader (and friend) Troy Thorne's book Pinewood Derby Designs & Patterns. Troy is the creative director over at Fox Chapel publishing, and he's definitely a handy guy. By day he lays out awesome woodworking books. But he spends his nights in the shop, tweaking his home-built Cobra replica and building furniture and canoes. He knows a thing or two about Pinewood Derby cars, too. Designs & Patterns presents the whole building process from start to finish along with specific plans for a couple of hot-ticket cars.Officially licensed by the Boy Scouts of America, this 118-page softcover (ISBN: 978-1-56523-341-6, $12.95) by Troy Thorne includes easy-to-follow steps for building various pinecar racers, patterns and designs, techniques for creating custom decals, applying a high-quality finish and helpful tips for preparing wheels, axles and weight for the race. As my son (first Grade) said after his first derby "Triangle cars go faster!"; guess we will be working on wedge designs next year. But the Halo Warthog, while not in this book, was a cool design too.

Very interesting designs to give you plenty of inspiration, and the photos and diagrams make understanding how to accomplish these feats of art, easy to follow. There is a speed secrets book that is a separate book, and is a good addition to the is book.

17 of 18 people found the following review helpful. More than anything I thought I could ever know. Great! By David H. Birley Folks, I need to be honest about something here. I have given people help and advice with tech things for years -- actually since 1985. I am the geek that folks gravitate towards when they have a tech question. There is, actually, a problem with that. I could most likely be a big help for a person with a question about Windows 95. I got my first copy of that in February of 1995, and made 110 phone calls to Microsoft Tech Support. In addition I purchased the thousand page book the Microsoft published about the product. So mastering this toy, the iPad should be a breeze for me, right? I mean it is just something that kids can use to entertain themselves, isn't it? Go buy one, press the appropriate buttons and get started. Simple. So why on earth would anyone, let alone an "expert:" like me want to bother with a 500 page book about it? For one thing, who's ever going to read a monster book like that anyway? So, let's consider the fact that there are different ways that people learn from books. Some folks, the ones that I call "theoretical learners" will sit down and read a manual from cover to cover, the way I would read a novel. Once they complete the reading, they will return to the beginning and start applying what they have learned. These are the same folks who make notes in the margins, underline and highlight things, and generally mess up the appearance of the book. The other group are what I call "practical learners". I'm one of those. When I got my first manual about computer programming, the very first page told what to do to bring up "Hello world" on my screen. I stopped right there and did it. I did not turn the page until it was done. Worked for me.So when I received this book, my plan was simple -- I already knew almost everything about how to use my iPad, so I would just skim through it, find a couple of things that I thought might be interesting, and then write the review. After all, the book is just a hair short of 500 pages. 32 of those pages are the Index. The Index? Whoa, what's going on here. Maybe I better put on my "Hello world" hat and take a closer look. And here is where the amazing thing happened. I used my usual "do as you go" approach, and by page 8 -- did you see that? PAGE EIGHT -- I had learned five new things I had never discovered before about my iPad. I returned to the Table of Contents, and read a totally amazing collection of headings offering guidance on things I had never even imagined my tablet could do. And it is well written and comprehensive without an overabundance of techie terms. Does have one tiny weakness, but I won't drop a star because of it. The author and his editor appear never to have heard about not splitting infinitives. They would have had "to never split" in that last sentence. Grammar police in me cringes at it, but no one star penalty anyway. The book as a whole is clearly worth every star it can receive.I received this product free of charge, in exchange for my honest review.

Lots of info, great pictures, many different models and updated for iPad 2 By Ursula For $9.99 you get: Anything you ever wanted to learn about your iPad. I was really overwhelmed when I started to go through it. I had no idea what I was missing. At first I thought it was fairly basic and that I knew most of the stuff since the iPad is very intuitive but as I kept going I realized how little I know. In my case particularly Cloud and how to use Evernote. What I most like is that it has the basic info and then a "Go further" section for those who want to know more about each subject. There are lots of pictures and illustrations and a "It's not all good section" which points to some areas that can be pitfalls or just confusing. I'll be using this book for a long time and look forward to really utilizing that expensive tablet it took me 2 years to save for.The only complaint I have is that the book doesn't stay open. It is so difficult to maneuver when you're trying to follow the steps on the iPad. I got this book for review and if I had bought it I may have returned it for that reason. I would probably be willing to pay $15 if the book could stay flat. You can bend it and put something heavy on it to hold it open or bend it quite a bit which may make the book pages from apart. Hence the 1-star deduction, not for content which is great but for the format. Not all the items will be in the place the books says. I have an iPad 2 Air and where the book says to look in Settings is not where it said but it did point me in the general direction.

I know I am because the iPad was / is intended to be intuitive and it is. Apple does have beginner’s classes in their stores, but I’m distance-challenged and never got a chance to take them. Online tutorials are great, but a book is even better. I do have Wiley’s iPad for the Older and Wiser, a book that’s fine for the rank beginner, but I need more than that. FYI, I’d heartily recommend the Wiley for the newbie or that older and wiser person.I do love the fact that there are comprehensive visuals along with the text. If I want to learn about syncing photos, I see a screen shot that has numbered pointers that accompany step-by-step directions. It’s almost as if someone is there pointing and explaining how to work through an issue. How do I sync? How can I access my albums? How do I transfer? Rosenzweig has made it much easier for me to work with my iPads without having to work with the online tutorials. When not all is good, there’s are great bright red sidebars “It’s Not All Good,” explaining where I might have problems. This too I appreciate. It certainly will save me a lot of headaches when I’m trying to learn new concepts. Obviously no book is a one-size-fits-all book, but rather one that can be tailored to the individual’s needs. I’m going to be using this as a reference, picking and choosing things I want to work with.If you do like online tutorials, I’ve noticed a small section on how to ask Siri to search for them. When I checked out the very comprehensive index, I’m seeing several other references as to how to search. I do have a few iPads I use frequently and this covers iOS 9 for any I choose to use. This especially like just in case I choose to use one over the other or think about upgrading. Definitely the book I’ve been waiting for.CONTENTS:Chapter 1  Getting Started     3Generations of iPads     3    Identifying Your iPad     4    iOS 9     5The iPad Buttons and Switches     6    The
