The war in Vietnam is over. Yet the descendants of those who fought there are pulled into a new war - a war in a country whose name has come to mean unending conflict, unending brutality, and unending killing: Afghanistan. Into this tortured land flies the civilian pilot Max Hoffman. Out of luck and out of money, he is easy prey to the CIA, who recruits him to join its hidden war. Hoffman soon discovers the American intelligence officers have a hidden agenda - personal gain and profit at any cost. And they have no qualms about who gets sacrificed in pursuit of their ruthless aims.

Yet they discover that Hoffman is no pushover. His ancestor was the leader of famed Vietnam fighters the Devil's Guard. And Max discovers he, too, has a talent for warfare that makes him every bit as devious and deadly as the enemy. Hoffman discovers he has entered the shadow war, a war where death can come at the hand of friend or enemy alike.

This is a story about a struggle that sucks in men, both military and civilian, and spits them out as battle-hardened veterans - or corpses. It is the story of bitter, bloody fighting and the struggle to survive in the cauldron of Afghanistan. It's a story of both regular soldiers and private contractors, for these are the killers for hire once known as mercenaries. The Devil's Guard has returned.

The action kicks in right at the start, and continues through the book. Sympathetic and colorful characters, excellent plot. Mercs and Special forces , couldn't want more.

Good action thriller of Afghanistan By Doug Acton The author has, IMHO, done a great job of writing a story of the Afghan war that is both exciting and tells it as it is. The politics, the action, it's all the way it really happens. Exccellent and thrilling.

By green ice Meyer does an excellent job of tying the drug, CIA, black op operations during Vietnan war to the obvious drug, CIA, black op in the current Afghanistan war. Good character structure tying the two together also. It looks like we found another author writing our style of novel. On to another Eric Meyer book.

By Amazon Customer Very basic book but shows the same picture of the gear over and over, and in the last page it makes a big mistake, saying that"It only works with Galaxy Note 4" smartphones. If you Google Samsung Gear VR, you'll see that it works with at least half a dozen Samsung smartphones, and my research indicates that even an iPod 5 might be usable because it has a four inch screen, but I'll have to research that further on my own unless there's someone out there that actually purchased the Samsung Gear and successfully used it with an iPod 5.

Review

From the reviews:

“This book is devoted to anisotropic elasticity, mechanics of composite materials and fracture mechanics, and connects theoretical treatment and numerical analysis. … the book by Hwu is appropriate to be a university textbook for the course of anisotropic elasticity. … a good reference book for the courses of plates and shells, elasticity, fracture mechanics, mechanics of composite materials. This well-written book is also a reader-friendly and good-organised handbook for engineers, textbook for students, and simultaneously is a research monograph in the field of anisotropic elasticity.” (Igor Andrianov, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1196, 2010)

“Structures, particularly those composed of composite materials, are often modeled as being composed of anisotropic elastic plates; this book is written for beginning graduate and advanced undergraduate students as well as for researchers interested in understanding such plates.” (IEEE Control Systems Magazine, Vol. 30, December, 2010)

From the Back Cover

Anisotropic Elastic Plates find wide applications as structural elements in modern technology. The plates are considered to be subjected to not only inplane loads but also transverse loads. Plane problems, plate bending problems as well as stretching-bending coupling problems are all treated in this book. In addition to the introduction of the theory of anisotropic elasticity that includes two complex variable methods - Lekhnitiskii formalism and Stroh formalism- several important subjects are also discussed such as wedges, interfaces, cracks, holes, inclusions, contact problems, piezoelectric materials, thermal stresses and boundary element analysis.

Anisotropic Elastic Plates also collects over one hundred problems and solutions. This book is a useful resource for engineers and researchers in composite materials.

A lucid treatment of anisotropic elastic theory, especially the elastic interaction of a dislocation with an interface By Ulfilas I turned to this book for information on a very specific problem among the many facets of anisotropic elasticity theory addressed by the author: the interaction of a dislocation with a free surface, or with a planar boundary for a layer of different mechanical stiffness. I had read about the treatment of this problem using Stroh's 2-dimensional dislocation model and analytical continuation in the complex plane in numerous journal articles. Prior to reading Hwu's rigorous treatment of this problem, however, I did not understand how the authors of these articles used analytic continuation to extract the boundary conditions from the continuity of displacement and stress at the interface.Instead of presenting the boundary conditions as "obvious" or as the result of "standard analytic continuation arguments" (as indifferently observed by the authors of various journal articles), Hwu clearly explains how Liouville's Theorem (a concept found in all complex analysis books) is used to arrive at the result. Liouville's Theorem states that a function which is analytic in a given region of the complex plane must also be constant in that region. Therefore, if a function in a given region is analytic, that region would necessarily be free of singularities/dislocations. By invoking Liouville's Theorem (p.102, Ch.4), Hwu makes it clear that each side of the interface (i.e. each half-space) may only be represented by a sum of functions that are devoid of singularities. Thus, if the dislocation is contained in the lower half-space (i.e. half space#1, which is situated below the interface), half-space#1 cannot include the Green's function G(z) corresponding to the dislocation/singularity. The sum of functions representing the upper half-space (i.e. half-space#2, the which is above the interface), however, may include the Green's function for the dislocation/singularity because the Green's function is finite within half-space#2. Similarly, the sum of functions representing half-space#2 may not include the Green's function corresponding to the reflection of the singularity/dislocation (i.e (G(z*))*, according the Schwarz reflection principle for harmonic functions). On the other hand, the sum of functions representing half-space#1 may include (G(z*))*, because (G(z*))* is finite within half-space#2. For a good treatment of the Schwarz reflection principle see Dennery (pp.80-82) Mathematics for Physicists (Dover Books on Physics).Almost everything you need to know about calculating the strain field or Peach-Koehler force on a dislocation near an interface or surface is contained in Chapter 4 "Infinite Space, Half-Space, and Bimaterials" on pp.87-114. What I have learned from reading this chapter in Hwu's book is vitally important in my research work. Only the level of understanding achieved by reading a book of this caliber is sufficient for the dedicated research scientist or engineer to have confidence in his calculations. The brilliant treatment that I have described above, however, only takes the reader up to the first four chapters (pp.1-113) of this outstanding book! In addition to the laying the groundwork for the treatment of half-spaces, the author addresses wedges and interface corners (Ch.5: pp.115-158); elliptical and polygonal holes/voids (Ch.6: pp.159-186); interfacial cracks and delimitation (Ch.6: pp.187-23; inclusions and their interactions with dislocations (Ch.8: pp.239-275); surface indentation and the elastic theory of contact between two adjacent bodies (Ch.9: pp.277-332); thermoelastic effects on voids, cracks, and wedges (Ch.10, pp.333-367); piezoelectric materials (pp.369-410); and plate bending (Ch.12: 411-434). Chapters 13-14 (pp.435-543 address stretching, voids, and inclusions in laminates: Chapter 15 (pp.545-588) is devoted to boundary element analysis. The remaining pages of this book (pp.589-673) are devoted to its extensive appendices, tables, references, and indices. For those who find this book as fully informative and enjoyable as I have, I recommend the book authored by Professor Hwu's Ph.D. advisor, Professor Thomas Chi-Tsai (T. C. T.) Ting: Anisotropic Elasticity: Theory and Applications (Oxford Engineering Science Series).

From Publishers Weekly Quick quiz: Do you call yourself a chick? Turned on by girl-on-girl action ? Know the difference between Absolut and Ketel One? If you answered yes to two out of three questions, you'll get a thrill from this book. Levin and Blitzer, two twenty-something lesbians, offer this as a guide for the newly out and the merely curious. The outline has pop, with topics like the problem of labels, the U-Haul syndrome, is-she-or-isn't-she experimentation (tricky territory that's handled well), and so on. Chapters start with tips and observations and end with a takeaway thought, framing stories from the authors and those they've interviewed. Most of the interviewees are much like the authors: young, well-heeled, hard-partying femmes, long on enthusiasm but short on experience, full of up-to-the minute slang but better at describing their drinks than their lovers. Lesbians with different lifestyles don't get much play, or even respect. Advice ranges from inarguable ("it is just as important to mesh well ... outside the sheets as it is between them") to potentially dangerous (confiding in "an anonymous online pal"). Though they've left a lot of queer territory unexplored, Levin and Blitzer's urban trailblazing is admirable, and their book deserves a large (if narrow) audience.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Chapter One:

Lesbian, the Label

Labels are for filing. Labels are for clothing. Labels are not for people. -- Martina Navratilova

You dress to the nines and enjoy an occasional manicure and pedicure. Wear flannels and tapered jeans everyday? No way. Sure, you find women hot. . . but doesn't everybody?

You don't look gay. You don't own any power tools. Guys check you out. Nobody would ever guess you've fantasized about your friends. . . or even fallen in love with them. Sure, you've had feelings for guys. Yet, you wonder what it would feel like to kiss a woman.

We've been there.

For years, we stood by our gold Prada stilettos, Citizen blue jeans, little black dresses, and pink Polo shirts. . . in the closet. We'll be the first to tell you, there's a hell of a lot more room in your closet once you come out of it. Being gay comes from within. It's not the stereotypical cropped haircut that makes someone gay. Just because we enjoy a weekly blowout and rocking little miniskirts doesn't mean we crave men. Our Prince Charming is, rather, a Cinderella.

In our pre-introspective teen years, we would have cringed if you told us we were gay. Us, gay? Hardly. Lesbians? No way, no how. Something about that label made it sound like we'd contracted some horrible disease. Sure, at the tender age of fifteen, we fell in love with our camp counselors. . . but, what girl hasn't fallen for her camp counselor? Women flirt with women. Girls develop girl crushes. It's only natural.

Yet, as we grew older, these lezzie crushes were more intense, and more frequent. Neither of us ever had super-serious boyfriends, but we have had sex with men. We've slept with men and women for the same reasons: because of desire, because we wanted to try it. And don't get us wrong, we enjoyed sex with men. But not like we do with women. Take it from lesbian comedian Lea Delaria: "It's not that I don't like penises, I just don't like them on men!"

Society leads us to believe that all women fall into one of three boxes: straight, bisexual, or gay. Yet, no one talks about the fact that many of the girls who say they fall into the straight box have chowed box. Just look at Marissa's bi-curious experimentation on The O.C. Or turn on MTV and watch any season of The Real World. Girls who experiment with their sexuality are all over the place, it's natural and it's normal. Girls kissing girls is no longer taboo. It's hot.

Research has shown, time and again, that women's sexuality is remarkably fluid. And there is a gray area, where many women choose to live and love. You may not look as "dykey" as, say, Chastity Bono or k.d. lang, but that doesn't mean you love women any less than they do. Some of your friends may have never been with men, some have never fantasized about women, and plenty are probably right in between.

Nowadays, people are even coming out of the closet as "asexual." Oftentimes, they first associate as gay, or at least people think they are gay for their lack of getting any. Soon enough, however, asexuals throw their hands up and admit that they are happy alone and don't crave physical intimacy with either men or women.

Despite our general aversion to labels, when push comes to shove, labels can actually be a good thing. It's nice to be able to identify and socialize with others whose desires are similar to your own. If labels didn't exist, there would be no "gay pride." In the end, labels are just a matter of preference. Our friend Sloane prefers to be called "queer." She feels the word queer implies that there is some discrepancy in her desires. She's not straight, but she's not gay, either. She's just a little "off," and thus identifies as queer.

Gaynglish

Entering a gay bar can make you feel as though you need a dictionary to weed through all the diverse labels. You'll hear terms like "boi," "lug," or "dink" tossed around carelessly. When we were both rookies on the lesbo scene, we had no idea what any of these words meant. So here's a quick primer:

A boi is a girl who looks like a boy. She may even look so much like a boy, you'd mistake this boi for an actual boy. . . and that is exactly her intention.

Lugs, on the other hand, are a rare breed found mostly in small women's colleges in the Northeast. These girls are "Lesbians Until Graduation," who take advantage of the spirit of experimentation and self-discovery that four years of higher education affords.

Dinks are a breed of homosexuals who are "Dual Income, No Kids." Dinks can be men or women and are usually rather wealthy. With no kids to support, they have money to spend on things like real estate and, say, Marc Jacobs.

Whichever way you chose to live your life, be sure that your happiness is the first priority. The rest will just fall into place.

Lauren Blitzer

I am a proud femme lesbian and a JAP-WASP mixed breed. Like most girls, I dress in a way that makes me feel comfortable and attractive. In my case, I just so happen to dress like a lot of the straight girls I work with.

Shopping has always been one of my favorite hobbies. When I receive my paycheck, I have to try hard not spend it all on shoes. I fit in with the rest of the young NYC man-hungry women on the prowl, except that while those women search for a rich Jewish husband, I search for a nice Jewish wife.

At first glance, I am not what I appear to be. The discrepancy became more apparent than ever my first day on the job at a fashionable women's magazine. The moment I set foot in the Condé Nast cafeteria, I heard the shuffle of Manolo Blahniks and Jimmy Choos. As foreign as the cafeteria was, at least I was familiar with the clickety-clack of expensive heels. Come on, now, I grew up on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. I know my shoes.

I felt nervous in the enormous cafeteria. In fact, nervous is an understatement. I was petrified. I looked like all of the women I had seen walking in and out of the Condé Nast building, but there was something different about me. I felt intimidated, scared, and painfully gay.

The buzz of "Omigod" and "You look sooo cute" filled the perfume-laced air. Blondes of all shades and brunettes alike swarmed the fresh fruit display, home to healthy low-fat yogurt and granola. My eyes widened and wandered as I got lost in this sea of Theory pants and YSL shirts. Each woman, more beautiful than the next, walked by me. They shot dirty looks at other women who either weren't dressed to par or looked better than them. The cafeteria literally reeked of criticism, jealousy, and the latest designer fragrances.

I walked through the cafeteria in a daze, as eye candy raced by me. Damn, these women were beautiful. But, as gorgeous as these fashionistas were, not one really appealed to me. What was lacking in most cases was depth. I don't like petty women. As my thoughts turned romantic, I alerted myself that, hello, these women are all straight! There were the obvious straight girls who sported gigantic engagement rings, and then there were the girls I assumed were straight because of how they dressed. These girls literally woke up at four a.m. just to straighten their hair more perfectly than Frederic Fekkai could do himself.

However, as I stared at a particular blond bombshell, I realized I was making the same assumptions that I don't like people to make about me. Maybe not every woman who works for Condé Nast is straight. I sure as hell am not, even though I look it.

The majority of the women at work never even thought to question my sexuality. Boys like me, so therefore I like boys. They figure everyone is straight unless they don't look straight. Thankfully, I can offer these people some enlightenment. I hope women can look at me and see that it's okay to like women and be in touch with your sexuality. It's okay to take care of yourself and want to look fabulous. Sexuality dictates whom you love, not how you look.

Susie

When I went to college, I was straight. Well, as straight as any eighteen-year-old, open-minded, sexually charged female could be. I attended the University of Vermont, and my freshman year was miserable. I smoked too much pot and involved myself with way too many lame eighteen-year-old boys who didn't appreciate who I was. They wanted more than I was willing to give and, in general, were one big snooze fest. Before my first spring break, I began looking for a new place to call my own.

Growing up, I'd kissed girls. Mostly for the pleasure of sixteen-year-old boys, who got hard at the mere sight of two legs and a skirt. I was the go-to girl for girls who'd never kissed girls. There was a night in my parents' basement when three cliques of girls were hanging out. A couple of the girls had never kissed another girl before. I was nominated to initiate them in to the girl-kissing world, and I was fine with that. I loved kissing, for God's sake! And other than passing thoughts, I'd only had one sex dream, about a girl I hardly spoke to in high school. But, it was a really hot dream. To this day, thinking about it makes me blush. I had no inkling that I'd ever date or fall in love with a woman. I dated baseball and football players!

Anyway, I left Vermont for a small women's college in northern California. This school was the answer to my prayers. Mills was a liberal haven, with a small campus and no boys to annoy me, for at least another three years. I was free! I started playing basketball almost right away. I played on a team with seven other women for one season. We didn't score a lot of baskets, but we had a good time, and it was a great way for me to meet people. Interestingly enough, the basketball season included a few different couplings. First, the forward was dating the point guard. They'd been dating since high school and came to Mills together. They broke up, and the forward found solace with the shooting guard. Six years later, the forward and the shooting gua...

For a mid-western lesbian "outcast" i learned everything i need to know about lesbian life style, and felt good about it! Not only do the authors boost a gal's self esteem, but the how to guide's couldn't be more on point! Every straight, bi, gay or curious girl should have a copy! It's also the perfect gift for a gay woman to give to her straight friends and family to understand what a she is going through in the coming out experience, as well as lesbian lifestyle. You go girls!

It was written from so many different and diverse first party experiences, it was fantastic! It is also a great "How To" on great topics such as dating and coming out, etc. This book is a great representation of women from all walks of life. I really respect the women who put their heart and souls into writing these stories and I appreciate that they were willing to share their lives with the world. This book not only made me think about my own life but the lives of so many women I know. If you personally or if you've ever had a mother, a sister, an aunt, a niece, a best friend or anyone close to you that has questioned their sexuality or has come out - you will definitely identify with this book and I highly recommend it! It teaches that you are not alone out there, it will change your outlook and maybe even your life! Good luck!

13 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Very Informative! By Julie A. Stenner I really enjoyed this book, and it helped me realize that the feelings that I've been having toward women for the majority of my life are common and lots of other females have been in the same boat as me. The only semi-negative message I got from the book was "pretty popular girls can be lesbians, too".

Iran’s most secretive covert operation is revealed in The Minders, a thriller about a complex terror plot triggered by text messages, which in turn unearths three decades of clandestine work. The unwitting terrorists include the CEO of a multi-billion dollar American company, a division head at the World Health Organization, and a Stanford graduate with a doctorate in mechanical engineering. The story dives deep into the ease by which several highly placed and successful Iranian-Americans react to coercion, partaking in a massive terror plot, all controlled by a reconstituted division of SAVAK, Iran’s old secret police. The global reach and power of this decades old division closes all normal avenues of support, requiring unconventional help. Jason Caius, a Farsi and Arabic language teacher at the Monterey Defense Language Institute, with a secretive past and a friend to the CEO, is that help. Jason utilizes his extensive network of relationships cultivated over years of working in Iran, Iraq, and across Europe, to do whatever is necessary to help save his friend and quash the ill-fated terror plot. His adventures take him across the US and Europe, through Turkey, culminating in Iran and Iraq, with action and plot twists in every town.

By Anna I recently purchased this book for my book club read and was instantly drawn in by the characters. After the Prologue I was hooked wondering why Baelana was doing what she was doing with her fearsome mingual at her side.It is literally a book that you won't be able to put down, wondering what will happen next.

I decided to give this a read and was drawn in from the very first chapter. It was a well written fantasy with plenty of action, a great plot, and just a hint of romance. The story ends leaving you anxious for the second book. I loved it so much I went ahead and bought a physical copy to go with my Kindle copy and submitted it to my bookclub to read! I cannot wait to see what the next book has in store.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great story with lots of twists By Book Lover Bought this book on a recommendation from a friend and thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I loved the description of the world and thought it was really well thought out, there had clearly been a lot of effort put into creating it, I especially loved the map at the start of the book. I thought the characters were well written and I really enjoyed seeing how they developed through the book.I thought there was a lot of action in the book and it kept me wanting to read more. The prologue drew me in and I really wanted to find out what it was Baelana had done. I thought her and her mingual were fantastic, a little creepy and very sinister. I liked being able to see how she developed through the book too, it's not often you get things from the antagonists point of view, even if they're only snippets. All in all I really enjoyed reading this book and I can't wait to see what happens next!

By Jaime Littlefield This book is an excellent guide for anyone using or intending to use the operating system. It is very precise and very easy to understand. Great book for the beginner and a good refresher book for those who have not interacted with Linux in many years. It is also interesting and useful especially if you are beginner and don't know a lot about operating systems. Basically this book covers everything you need to know about Linux. An ultimate guide for every beginners! This book is highly recommended.

I would say you should be a little familiar with Linux to really appreciate this book, but it's not necessary. If you want to get a better understanding of Linux, I recommend this book over the Unix and Linux Systems Administrator Handbook, this is less intimidating and you'll gain a good foundation. After you're done, then read the Unix and Linux Systems Administrator Handbook.

Best Ebook PDF Online Longue Vue House and Gardens: The Architecture, Interiors, and Gardens of New Orleans' Most Celebrated Estate, by Charles Davey, Carol McMichael Reese

The stunning interiors and glorious gardens of New Orleans’s unrivaled jewel and architectural masterpiece. Longue Vue House and Gardens, accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and listed as a national historic landmark, was designed and built between 1934 and 1942 by landscape architect Ellen Biddle Shipman and architects Charles and William Platt for Edgar Bloom and Edith Rosenwald Stern, New Orleans’s foremost mid-twentieth-century philanthropists and civil-rights activists. The mansion and its surrounding eight acres of garden spaces, with varied designs ranging from the formal to the wild, draw upon Southern architectural traditions and native Louisiana flora, even as they echo the contemporaneous garden-design movement that set the stage for the creation of some of the most breathtaking garden estates in the country. Lush photography, supporting architectural drawings, and an informative text bring the main house and gardens to life and establish the estate as an enduring symbol to its creators’ contributions to building a just society.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Could be better but it will still get you there By Stephen8454 I am really quite peeved that in studying this book for the exam it has several sections where it claims "we are not going into detail about this subject but you will need to know this for the exam" but then refer's to a technet link. It wouldnt bother me if this was a huge book to cover this information. Also there are a few objective review questions that dont have explanations in the preceding context so it can be a little frustrating that you cant be prepared to answer the questions unless you go to the internet for further information.Other than that its the only full book on the market as of now to cover this exam so it is what it is.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This book alone can get you past 70-697. Author didn't do a great job though. By Alex L The 70-688 and 70-687 books had a clearer layout and contained less errors than this book. Though this book covers all the topics you need to pass 70-697, the content jumps around, and could be laid out much better. I also generally disagree with what Andrew decided to cover in depth, vs what he chose to condense and leave to technet articles for further elaboration. Moreover, having skimmed through it once, I already have about a dozen errors to send to Microsoft on this one. Andrew wrote the 70-687 book, and I was surprised in what I feel was a sharp turn downward in quality and attention to detail in this book. Having read it once now, there's at least a dozen errors I was able to find - nothing huge that would cause a fundamental misunderstanding of a concept, but more like, "this kid didn't proofread his essay enough before he turned it in." This book also contains a LOT more whitespace than the 70-688 and 70-687 books...there's some areas where I can't help but wonder if they were just trying to artificially inflate the page count. You won't see what I'm talking about from the content shown in the "peek inside" preview, but you'll remember this when you've bought the book and are reading it - which you should. The book itself, despite my contentions, is still GOOD. It's just not the same quality I expected from him. If you want the most condensed study guide you can get, that will still prepare you well enough to pass the test, this is it. If you don't understand a concept in the book, you need to go research it before moving on. Once you can read the book from start to finish, comprehend everything he's saying, and remember most of it, you're ready to take the test. On a side note, the one thing I'd suggest coupling this with would be the 70-697 course from cbtnuggets. The overlap is between this and cbtnuggets is 100%, with cbtnuggets being even further condensed. The value I find there is that I remember things better when I see them presented twice in two different ways. If you're REALLY good at remembering things and visualizing what's going on as you read, you don't need to do labs. I've been doing Microsoft tests since server 2008, and have always passed them without the labs - not always on my first try, mind you. On a final sidenote, you should really invest in the $200 booster pack version of the exam voucher when you are ready to take the test.If you've found my review helpful, please mark it as such. Likewise, if you have any questions, please leave me a comment. I do my best to reply to peoples questions within a week. Thank you!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Almost complete By Louis M. It was good but didn't cover the entire test. With a little more research and hands on this will definitely help with passing the exam.

Image sharpness is one of photography’s yin/yang propositions. Soft focus can impair a photograph, but just as readily enhance it. Blurs and soft zones function like shadows and highlights; they minimize certain details in the image and redirect a viewer’s attention within the frame. “Like the rest stops in a piece of music,” writes author Jim Cornfield, “creatively manipulated softness can empower a photograph’s impact.” There are countless ways to selectively modulate sharpness in an image. This veteran commercial photographer reveals his personal choices for using soft focus. “It’s not just eye candy,” he writes, “it can also add great depth and meaning to an image.” Readers learn the background of soft-focus photography, historical and technical-- the use of spherical aberration, circles of confusion, and bokeh. More importantly, the book reveals a wealth of image manipulation techniques for creating amazing, evocative effects both in camera and in the digital darkroom. Included; a bonus chapter featuring the work of three noted contemporary fine art shooters who use soft-focus and diffusion with stunning, gallery quality results. It’s great inspiration for readers to augment their photographic repertoires, their artistic personas and their client lists.

A 'Master Class' on the photographic art of focus manipulation By Francis T Mercer The Soft Touch by Jim Cornfield is the work of a master photographer. It illuminates the art of focus manipulation by providing the knowledge and teaching the techniques to create it. The book is a revelation that speaks to the importance of telling a story with a photograph and demonstrates how to use focus manipulation techniques to reveal the essence of the story. The author begins with an enlightening discussion using examples of softly focused portrait images that were popular in the early days of photography, and had a very special meaning to him as a young person. Included here is a beautiful example of his own award winning image created in the likeness of an Edgar Degas painting. The magical softness of this remarkable image was actually achieved by …..smearing margarine onto the surface of a UV filter! The book progresses through a range of available equipment, techniques and software programs. Excellent image examples are discussed in parallel with detailed instructions on the associated cameras, filter types, lenses, exposures, innovative capture techniques and post processing software methods required to successfully create such images.Much of the book is devoted to enriching the art of portraiture, a genre of photography highly sensitive to nuance and interpretation. Excellent sections are included in the areas of action sports, landscape and travel photography. The author’s demonstration of highly original images that can be achieved using the soft touch post-processing techniques truly illustrates the power of the concepts and teachings of the book. Overall this is an excellent work of experience, knowledge and authority in the art of photography. The writing style is both engaging and professional. The book is quite user-friendly and has given me, as I believe it will give others, a new vision and a broader understanding of the meaning of focus. I’m looking forward to continuing to grow my photographic skills through the adoption of the focus manipulation techniques so well covered in this remarkable book The Soft Touch, by Jim Cornfield.

To my surprise and delight, it was much more than a “how-to”. Each segment was a mini-story providing an interesting and educational read through the history of photography and the author’s vast experiences.

By Amazon Customer For nearly forty years I've headed advertising departments for major corporations and media companies. I know something about how images and the emotions they create can resonate with the viewer. The Soft Touch: A photographer's guide to manipulating focus is chock full of technical stuff that I can only appreciate at a distance. But the balance between tech talk and the human condition that Jim Cornfield brings through his personal "behind the scenes" stories, travels to fascinating and far flung lands, his moving descriptions of people and places makes for a very human underpinning for the book. And that is what makes it so special and readable. This impressive book will surprise you. It reveals more than just the "how" of a photographic technique; it's about understanding "why".

I think my favorite is the goat...although I may mix it up and only make one horn to create a unicorn :) They are detailed without being too complicated. An example of this is the cow even has a tiny udder. The harvest includes patterns for hay, a bucket and veggies. This would be fun to create the animals for a Christmas manger scene or for Easter treats.
