I'm not typically a big reader of this genre but I find that the story so far is riveting, doing a good job of pulling me in. The writing is fluid and the transitions feel natural. Even though I'm not finished reading, I'm already looking forward to the next book!

There is good content which is well organized. Not only does this give a good idea of the space you’re using up, but also restoring, resetting, parental control, credential storage etc...

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. {review} By Zapkode Marie {The Secret Path} – Adam is a new resident to Spooksville from Kansas City. He and his dad are moving things out of the moving truck into his house when his dad hurts his back and sends Adam to the local 7/11 to get some cold sodas. While Adam is walking home he meets an unusual girl named Sally.Sally is full of all sort of interesting stories about the town in which Adam is now living in. Adam is skeptical about nearly everything she says as they are walking back to his house. Sally meets his parents and then they go out to explore the town since Adam hadn’t really seen much of it since he got there. Sally takes him to meet her friend Watch which is another strange character and then the three of them go to meet the old mayor. The old mayor tells them a riddle and if they can solve the riddle they will find The Secret Path.Adam, Sally and Watch decide to try and figure out the riddle and that’s what they spend their day doing. However, it isn’t the sort of riddle you’d expect and it isn’t answered in ways that would appear logical all at once. What happens once they figure out the entire riddle is quite and interesting occurrence.I really enjoyed reading this book, because I like the slight horror, slight mystery, slight spooky aspect of books. I think any child that enjoys books like this and want to go on a different kind of adventure could easily be entertained by these books. The great thing about them is they are short so depending on a child’s reading speed they should be able to read a book a day or more. If they get sucked into the story I can see it being much much more then just a book a day.{The Howling Ghost} – Watch, Adam and Sally are introduced to a new character in this book. Her name is Cindy and she claims that her brother was taken by a ghost. It’s not too far fetched for the three to decide to help her because they believe that is what in deed had happened given the weird things that seem to happen in Spooksville. Like Adam, Cindy and her family had recently moved in to live in the house her father had inherited. That sad thing is she lost her father because he died and now her brother got kidnapped by a ghost. I can’t imagine how that could make anyone feel other then dead inside. The four of them decide that they are going to try and find out what happened to Cindy’s brother. They start tracing clues and going places. They look for what makes sense and then they try to put it all together so that they can better understand the gravity of the situation. I don’t think anyone could truly understand the gravity of any situation that seems to take place in the town.I do like how the characters seem to find adventure and mystery. I like how the story is written and how it pulls you in and I am sure anyone that has read them will feel similar. I also like how they are short and fairly quick and easy to read. There are some days where I really want to read but I don’t want to be stuck with a book that will take hours to finish. These don’t take long at all and are always wrapped up with a nice little bow at the end so that you have closure to the story but there is still room for it to be added to. I think that is part of what makes them very enjoyable to read.{The Haunted Cave} – Cindy, Adam, Sally and Watch decide to go explore a haunted cave. When they get there Sally and Watch don’t want to enter. Watch ends up staying outside while the other three go inside. Sally is less then impressed that she was more or less bullied into entering and exploring the cave. While they are near the entrance Sally and Cindy get into a dispute and then somehow the caves opening closes and they are stuck inside. Watch and Adam try to figure out how to stop it from closing all the way but each of their efforts appear to end in vain.Watch runs off in an attempt to get them help and find a way to get them out of the cave. The other three wonder around the cave endlessly trying to find another way out. They have quite and adventure. It’s always fun to read books that take you on an adventure and leave you wondering what is going to be happening next. It’s always fun to enjoy the book you are reading and know that when it does inevitably come to an end that there is still more to the story and that the story will continue on, that the characters aren’t done yet and that they still have places to go and things to do. These are the kind of stories that I enjoy the most. I enjoy being able to read and get to know the characters. I enjoy getting to know their personalities and I enjoy seeing them evolve.I think any child that likes a little adventure can enjoy these books. I also think they are a good series for any child that likes Goosebump books because to me they are similar in fashion. They have their spooky aspect, but it is a light spooky it isn’t the kind of spooky that can be considered terribly scary. These are rather short books that don’t take long to read, and would be excellent choices for short car rides, or plane trips. They easily suck you into the story and keep you wondering what’s coming next and for me that helps to make some of the more entertaining stories to read. I love books where I crave more and want to read more, because those books are the one’s that usually have the ability to stick with you long after you have finished reading them.

I wanted to introduce him to other authors with similar writing styles and this book was perfect. He loves it and hasn't put it down since he got it!

An hour and a half outside Tucson, Arizona, The Commons is a luxury retirement community where no full-time resident under the age of fifty-five is permitted. Young professionals Seth and Alison Collier accept jobs there as a means of dealing (badly) with a recent loss. When a struggling resident, underwater on her mortgage and unable to relocate due to the nation’s ongoing housing crisis, is discovered to be raising her grandson in secret, the story--with the help of a well-meaning teenaged beauty blogger and a retiree with reasons of his own to seek the spotlight--goes viral. You Could Be Home By Now explores the fallout for all involved, taking on the themes of grief and memory, aspiration and social class, self-deception, and the drive in all of us to find a place to belong.

Review

"Manaster weaves...disparate tales of strife and grief eloquently, impressively depicting an adolescent girl and an aging man with equal fullness and depth. She also resists the urge for easy resolution...instead offering small amounts of emotional satisfaction that feel realistic and earned." --Publishers Weekly

"The setting is the only thing sleepy about Manaster's debut. Complex, interweaving stories tangle inside The Commons, a retirement community outside Tucson, Arizona.... A scintillating drama that's touching, funny and impossible to put down." --Kirkus Reviews

"Manaster's debut is an adventurous undertaking, both light and insightful. The wide range of characters...is well depicted and appealing. For fans of realistically written, flawed-human narratives--with a flair for fun." --Library Journal

"Poignant, funny debut.... A hoot that will touch your heart!" --People Magazine

"Each character has quirks that can be entertaining, saddening and harrowing.... Manaster weaves an entertaining tale of retirees and youthful souls who are living with circumstances that challenge their personal expectations of life.... The experiences of the characters in the story are...delightful." --The Deseret News

"Tracy Manaster's debut novel You Could Be Home by Now is a book for the New Year if ever there was one." --BookTrib

"Manaster creates vivid characters who come alive on the page, characters the reader can feel for and identify with even as they often seem to go over the edge.... In her retirement community there is humor and heartbreak, but most of all there is the poignancy of people, old and young, finding ways to go on living, and perhaps finding happiness." --Blogcritics.org/SeattlePI.com

"Some books you just don't want to end; Tracy Manaster's You Could Be Home By Now is one of those books. The story moves at a good clip, and Manaster is the rare author that finds the almost always elusive balance between plot and character. There's a sense of hope that these characters will find what they are looking for. It's just hard not to close this book with a bit of a sigh and a wish that we could be there when they do." --Pop Matters

"This book is so much more than readers could possibly anticipate. It explores the twisted emotions of loss and grief in depth, talks about the way we deceive ourselves in order to keep going, and touches on our innate need to belong somewhere, among other things. This novel is a fantastic read, and one that will stay with readers long after they've finished the final page." --San Francisco Book Review

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. intelligent, entertaining, and highly recommended By She Treads Softly You Could Be Home By Now by Tracy Manaster covers a wide variety of social issues in an intelligent, entertaining, and highly recommended debut novel.Seth and Alison Collier are teachers who have recently experienced the death of their first child as a newborn. Seth, who is seemingly struggling more with handling his grief than Alison, suggests that they make a complete change of atmosphere to help them deal with their grief. They leave their teaching jobs in Vermont and move to the Commons, an over 55 planned community in outside Tucson, Arizona.Once they are ensconced in their new positions, we meet some of the residents. Sadie, a recent widow, has her teenage granddaughter, Lily, come to visit. Lily who has come out as gay, has been sent to visit after her school reprimands her over a post on her blog, which features fashion advice for teens. She ends up saving the life of the grandchild secretly living next door with Mona Rosko, a curmudgeonly woman who has been unable to sell her house in the community due to the depressed housing market. The discovery of a child under 55 living in the community makes Mona a target for eviction. Ben Thales, who is a recently divorced retired veterinarian, has his own reasons for spouting off to a news reporter in such a vitriol manner that the clip goes viral, making Ben's mental health a concern for his son and ex-wife.The pleasure I found in Manaster's novel surprised me. The writing is very good, but the real treasure is her characters. The emotions and inner turmoil of all the characters are handled so deftly and distinctly that I found myself enjoying the novel more and more. They have all the complex emotions, vulnerabilities, and disparate motives of real people, so they are not easily thrown into good/bad categories. They are all people struggling along with events, considering events and their actions based their own personal experiences. Each character is allowed to tell the events from their point of view and we are privy to the reason's they are doing many of the things that others are questioning.Anyone who has ever lived with a home owner's association full of persnickety despots will totally understand how the rules in the retirement community, while written for a reason, are hard to accept in all situations. Life is never quite that neat and tidy. As a personal aside I once lived in an HOA community where a couple residents on the board were trying to dictate that only a certain kind of rose could be planted, as well as several other rules that were not in the by-laws and thus totally legally unenforceable. This experience did show me how a little power can affect some people, and, more importantly, that they can only be the neighborhood bullies if you allow it. You can say, "No, I will not sign that petition." and life will go on.Disclosure: My Kindle edition was courtesy of Adams Media for review purposes.

By retiredandlovinit With the title plus the heading "The most fun I've had reading a novel in years," I expected a light-hearted look at retirement living. That really isn't this book. Instead, it is a convoluted and circuitous tale of three very different "couples" whose lives intersect in a retirement community in AZ. All three share one circumstance - they are trying to find their way through the loss of a loved one. First are two young married teachers staggered by the stillbirth of their lovingly anticipated son Timothy. They escape to The Commons to avoid facing their grief. Next are the pair of grandmother/granddaughter, with grandmother facing the one year "reverse-iversary" of the grandfather's death, and granddaughter facing a betrayal by her high school best friend. The third duo is a divorced couple whose drug addict daughter disappeared years ago - is it time to admit that she will never return? If these characters aren't enough, there are several more plot lines woven in: the glad-handing Commons founder with his own agenda; an angry grandmother trying to hide her young grandson and a bigger secret; a newspaper intern trying to write his own Big Story; and even a historical story of an early settler who suffered losses of her own. This all sounds very sad and serious, but there are also many zany, sarcastic and borderline bizarre moments that occur as well. The book careens from moment to moment and perhaps the author just tried to do too much. The book does end well -- each major plot line is (mostly) resolved and carries hope for the future, and there are some chuckles about technology and blogs and some wry commentary about relationships, but overall the mix of serious issues and some forced comedy is not terribly effective.

By Trifle If you are an actual human being that enjoys captivating journeys through well-realized characters' lives, buy it. NOW!Buy it for you, or a friend, or your mom, or your grandfather! There is someone for everyone to root for in this book. Who will be *your* favorite protagonist? You won't know unless you read it!Mine is Lily, the perfectly coifed beauty expert who just so happens to be into girls. I love that she gets to be a real gay teenager, with the self-involvement of that age without being a "noble homo" or "fairy godmother" or "cautionary tale." Plus, I'm using some of her beauty tips now. Sometimes when I look in the mirror I wonder "What would Lily say to me?" and I make better choices.Of course, Lily is my favorite but I identify the most with Seth, who is trying to heal from a devastating blow while also working to ward of the more devastating blow of losing his connection to his wife. His sections are almost painful to read--but in the lance the boil, treat the infection, go through the crap so that healing can begin sort of way. Also, we get to look into the seedy (or at least somewhat less than perfectly manicured) underbelly of a retirement community, and who hasn't wondered what they get up to in those places? This book is going to go under the tree for a lot of people, which vastly simplifies my present-buying. After all, who wants to be desperately wandering around the mall when You Could Be Home By Now?

It explores crucial questions about the Internet's effects on human behavior, such as why we often act in uncharacteristic ways in online environments and how social media influence the impressions we form and our personal relationships. Guzman Supported by knowledge of recent research, the author provides insight into how people sometimes behave differently on the Internet than they do in real life. According to Wallace, behaviors based on psychology in real life often do not carry over into the virtual world in the same way. For frequent users of the Internet, this information is not startling but eye-opening. For those who use the Internet little or not at all, this is a well-presented introduction to the cyberworld. Although academic in tone, the book is easy to read as it explores the many facets of life on the "Net". Because it is based on clinical research, it gets a bit wearying near the end. However, be sure to read it in its entirety because it is well presented, very inclusive, and quite interesting. Since completing this book, I am more fully cognizant of the different behaviors of "Web" users each time I log on. This would include those inhabitants of cyberspace as well as those who dwell within my own home! :-)

A broad but surface coverage By A Customer Generally, the "The Psychology of the Internet" is a broad sweeping, albeit whirlwind, run through a wide gamut of psychological issues as they might--or might not--apply to the Internet. This is an important topic that could provide insight into how the Internet, as it becomes increasingly pervasive, will affect human relations. From my perspective, some of the more salient topics included the advantages and disadvantages of group interactions and the possibilities for conflict and resolution. Dr. Wallace provides a good analysis of some of the ways in which individual behavior changes on the Net and off. Additionally, the book covers a number of other topics, such as the psychology of "flaming," pornography, Internet addiction, altruism, and gender issues. For those who are well read in the area of psychology on the Internet, there is a fair amount of rehashing of material that has been extensively covered elsewhere. For example, Dr. Sherry Turkle's 1995 "Life on the Screen," extensively discusses the fluidity of personalities on the web, the issues of anonymity, and the effects of computerized psychotherapy. Both Turkle's work, and the seminal work of Rheingold ("The Virtual Community"), have already extensively covered the peculiar nature of MUDs and Usenet, as well as the notorious cases of cyberrape on LambdaMOO and other cyberdeceptions. The book also relies heavily on the oft-cited studies of Amy Bruckman and Dr. Sara Kiesler. In general, the topics that are presented appear to be well documented in a clear and accessible style with up-do-date information. Dr. Wallace has done an excellent job of presenting a full spectrum of psychological issues, although much of the discussion is on the state of research on the issue in general, with follow-on discussion as to how it would apply to the Internet. In the case of group dynamics, conversational norms, and readiness to express aggressive behavior, I found this quite interesting. In some other areas, it was what you would expect and consequently less thought provoking. The beginning of the book is particularly strong, but it fades in the last two chapters into kind of a grab bag of Internet issues that, for my taste, have an only peripheral relevance to a discussion of psychology on the Internet. Overall, the book seems to be a good overview and does a superior job of summarizing the current state of research, albeit without providing much in the way of a conclusion.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A well researched and highly illuminative book By Vinay Varma This book came at a time when most books written about internet by social scientists, journalists etc., were either too focused on very incidental benefits of internet like the virtual communities, or starkly apolocalyptic in their analyses or chracterized by a Pollyanna utopianism. More speculative thinking that research and analysis chracterizes many books on the internet. This one, based on a thorough grounding in social psychology and a comprehensive review of empirical literature on the subject, studies how behavior and thinking has got effected by the internet, how we behave offline and online, how going online effects us etc. However, this is a book on the social psychology of the internet and not psychology proper. It's more about how we behave online etc., than about how internet alters cognition. Nevertheless, at the end of reading it, the reader feels a sense of having returned with a much deeper understanding than he or she could have achieved on his/her own.

Three generations of strong-minded Rosens have gone their own ways, keeping a safe distance from each other. When Peter Rosen, the octogenarian émigré professor, takes a bad fall in the snow, his estranged adult daughter Marlene begins flying regularly to Madison.

Long days on Spooner Street amidst her ailing father’s beloved German books enable Marlene to let go of old bitterness and rekindle her love for him. When her son, Noah, returns from Africa for a last visit with his grandfather, he instigates a deeper honesty, love and forgiveness among all three Rosens.

"[A] superb novel, tender, wise, and beautifully crafted. I found myself reading more slowly as the end of this stunning novel was in sight, not wanting to leave its embrace." - Marnie Muller, author of The Climate of the Country

Award-winning essayist and fiction writer Ascher weaves a detailed, painstaking and generous tale of reconciliation among three generations. Elderly literature professor Peter Rosen, a cantankerous German émigré, is injured in an icy fall, and his estranged daughter Marlene is reluctantly called into service. Duty becomes something more textured and loving, with a gay Dominican homecare aide and Marlene’s strong-willed biracial son adding drama and depth to the mix. - Chronogram

“A thoroughly engaging and entertaining read from beginning to end, A CALL FROM SPOONER STREET documents author Carol Ascher as an extraordinary storytelling talent.” – Midwest Book Review

“A deftly crafted novel by a truly gifted author and one that will hold the reader’s rapt attention from beginning to end.” - Reviewer’s Bookwatch

Admittedly, seeing the words "death" and "holiday" in the same title can be a bit jarring. But the reality is that during this season of joy and love many people are dealing with either the approaching death of a loved one or grief over a loss that has already occurred. . . . A Call from Spooner Street by Carol Ascher is a good read for an adult child dealing with the death of an elderly parent. - Huffington Post

The Grace to Change By ddship The Grace to Change In A Call from Spooner Street, Carol Ascher describes in lapidary prose not only the dying of a Patriarch, and its effects on the members of his extended family, but also the transitions between cultures, generations and modes of being.Through the eyes of Marlene Rosen, an only child who shuttles back and forth from New York to her childhood home in Madison to arrange for elder care, we see her German émigré father. Peter Rosen is gradually revealed in his roles as literature professor, father, grandfather, husband, and mentor. Father and daughter have become estranged by his stubborn refusal to forgive the youthful rebellions that took her to New York and produced a child out of wedlock. She longs for detente and yet still cannot always control her anger with him.Noah, Marlene’s now grown son, is a catalyst for reconciliation when he arrives from Africa. While both the recognition of her father’s frailty and a rekindled romantic relationship with an old beau work to ease Marlene’s buried anger. Finally the caregiver, Raul, is also an agent of change. Although sick himself with AIDS, he is the lightest and most emotionally accessible of the characters. His love for the old man is unconditional. And his openness brings an emotional ease that finally allows us to hear the dying man’s own interior voice as he acknowledges his death and his bond with his daughter.Ms. Ascher has created a powerful and sensitive story of transformation. Rites of passage are universal and the currents surrounding them are commensurately strong. Leaving one group to enter another, acknowledging change is the heart of A Call from Spooner Street. It tells the story of the change from life to death, from one generation to the next, one culture to another and ultimately gives us the key to forgiveness itself.

Zimiles A Call From Spooner Street builds subtly as the memorable characters reveal themselves in their complexity and humanity. Without being in the strict sense a novel of ideas there is much probing intelligence in the topics and choices that come up in the flow of events. I was especially moved by the portrait of the aged German professor, Peter as he struggles with, denies and faces death. His voice is just right I can hear him speak. Having cared for my mother as she fell apart, I felt I was reading something very authentically felt or imagined by the author. Likewise with the many emotions evoked in the single mother by the return from overseas of her son, an idealistic and charming young man just setting out in life. I felt I was encountering my own mothering self. This is a book to be savored, felt deeply and also to think about in a wonderful balance of these pleasures.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An absorbing, well written, powerful story By MF An absorbing, multi-faceted story that took me right back to my own experiences of ambivalent relationships and death vigils. Good, well written literature has the power to make us rethink our histories and our own relationships. Spooner Street did that for me. Although all of the characters are well drawn, it was the father that ultimately captured my interest and sympathy the most. In the beginning it was his daughter, Marlene, but by the end, it was Peter. The way his slow but relentless physical deterioration is described is 100% believable, as well as his concomitant struggle to maintain some semblance of independence. That treasure, his caretaker, Raul, humanizes him, and helps soften him for Marlene, but it is the interior thoughts and monologues that are so brilliantly imagined and developed that soften him for the reader. The author skillfully weaves in phrases and stanzas of German literature, which contribute to the understanding of Peter's character and journey.

Bell's Tales of the Bagman is another great title from Airship 27, one of the pre-eminent publishers of New Pulp Fiction. Bell is a Chicago writer and this book is a real winner. Set in the mid 30s in Chicago, Frank "Mac" McCullough works for Chicago's mob and breaks legs for a living. But when he has to rough up his uncle he has second thoughts. He takes action of a different type as The Bagman - a vigilante with a bag over his face to conceal his identity. Now he's working for the underdog; guys like his uncle. Labeled "The Bagman" by the press, McCullough commences with a campaign to rid Chicago of lawlessness, and that's when this book really kicks into high gear. B.C. (Byron Christopher or "Chris" to his friends) Bell has written an incredibly entertaining novel. The setting, characters and plot all flow seamlessly. Bell is an imaginative, imagistic writer which is the style I've always favored. He slips in this deft characterizations and images with the slippery ease of a boxing pro: "Coco blew smoke out of perfect, cupid bow lips."(p.47). Indeed, Miss Coco Blue is but one of numerous characters that come alive with Bell's vivid prose. And there are Crankshaft, an auto salesman and suddenly willing ally for The Bagman; Slots Lurie, Wheezy, Sammy the Scar and many others. Also of note is Bell's knowledge and research about Chicago. The city plays a character, too, albeit as a stage setting, but vital nonetheless. This is Capone's town and its Capone's era, or at least the tail end of it. Those familiar with Chicago will recognize places like The Green Mill which during this period catered to an entirely different clientele. Tales of the Bagman is loaded with historical details and locations which made it all the more fun to read. I'm tagging B.C. Bell's Tales of the Bagman as one of the top New Pulp Fiction titles I read this past year. I suggest you put this title at the top of your Christmas shopping list. B.C. Bell's Tales of the Bagman is a keeper!

Bonadonna Author B Chris Bell was born and raised in Texas, and now lives somewhere in Chicago. I was born and raised in Chicago, and still live here. But Bell writes about Chicago as if he were born and raised here. Heck, he knows more about 1930s Chicago than I do! And that's the period in which he's set his wonderful novel, Tales of the Bagman: 1933 Chicago, during the last days of Prohibition. The Bagman is one Frank "Mac" McCullough, a one-time courier and thug for a crime family during the First Great Depression. At an early age Mac's life took a major turn when he became an orphan, spent time in a reformatory, and then later got involved in the rackets. But he's always had a core of decency and honesty buried in his heart. So when he chooses to help and old family friend who got in hock to the Mob, Mac turns his back on crime and his Boss, Slots Lurie, and suddenly finds himself taking another turn on the road of life. In a last-minute decision to conceal his identity from the wiseguys he's hunting, Mac dons a paper bag over his head, and soon he's known as the mysterious Bagman. (Later he acquires a mask more appropriate to being a man of mystery, crime-fighting avenger.) And then, in the first part of this origin story, he becomes a fugitive wanted by both the Mob and the police. At the center of this nicely-plotted, well-written, and exciting novel is Mac's wonderful, endearing personality. He's a good guy to have at your back, a good friend. And unlike most characters of this sort, he doesn't always use his brains --- which makes him all the more human and believable. What sets this novel apart, besides Bell's ability to tell a good story and develop solid characters, is Mac's friendship with a black mechanic and garage owner named Antoine "Crankshaft" Jones, a WWI hero and winner of the French Medal of Honor. Crankshaft has known Mac since Mac was a kid, and while he may play the part of reluctant sidekick, his relationship with Mac is one of equals, and more than that, the WWI vet is Mac's father-figure -- and even more than that, Crankshaft is often the brains, the logic, the reason that keeps Mac from going off the deep end, literally, into the Chicago River, if ya gets my drift, y'know? Their relationship is tight: they're friends who go wining and dining and hanging out in public -- a rarity in stories set in this period, and a rarity in real-life 1930s. Their affection and loyalty to each other is shown through the many battles against the Mob they -- or rather Mac -- get them into. Their repartee is rapid-fire, and the humor explodes off the pages along with the action, danger, and gun shots. There's even time for a little romance for Crankshaft, in the form of one lovely lady named Coco. This is hard-boiled crime fiction, pulp fiction at it's best, with a flavor of old Chicago that recalled to my mind all the stories my Mom and Dad used to tell me. It rings so vivid and true you can smell the bootlegged booze, the old Chicago stockyards, and feel the breeze of the Windy City coming in off of Lake Michigan. I know many of the streets and locations where this novel takes place, and it added an extra dimension to my enjoyment. Mac the Bagman and Crankshaft Jones are a 2-man team of Untouchables, fighting crime in a souped-up, 1933 Graham "Blue Streak" Eight that Mac stole from gangster Slots Lurie. But his "monthly" payments are quite heavy, though, as poor Mac takes a lot of beatings and comes thisclose to death during many a tussle with the wiseguys. But somehow he always manages to bounce back in time to bounce the heads of the bad guys off the sidewalk and a few innocent walls.Trust me, this is an offer you can't refuse. And yes, Chris Bell, I would be interested in reading how Mac would handle Dillinger at the 1933 Chicago World's Fair.--- Joe Bonadonna, author of MAD SHADOWS: THE WEIRD TALES OF DORGO THE DOWSER

It is charming and simple, yet is enjoyable to read aloud over and over again. The illustrations are quite lovely and memorable and the author has a great sense of the outdoors and children's insatiable appetite for adventures. It isn't overly sentimental nor simplistic and has great heart. Plus, it features a dad and his daughter - not the most common pairing but a precious one!

Leverage the powerful Arduino and XBee platforms to monitor and control your surroundings

About This Book

  • Build your own low-power, wireless network using ready-made Arduino and XBee hardware
  • Create a complex project using the Arduino prototyping platform
  • A guide that explains the concepts and builds upon them with the help of examples to form projects

Who This Book Is For

This book is targeted at embedded system developers and hobbyists who have some working knowledge of Arduino and who wish to extend their projects using wireless connectivity.

What You Will Learn

  • Interact with XBee boards using the XCTU program on Windows, OS X, or Linux
  • Make your Arduino boards communicate wirelessly, using XBee modules in the advanced API mode
  • Centrally collect and store measured sensor data, in the cloud or your own database
  • Connect the coordinator Arduino to the Internet and send data to web services
  • Control your environment automatically, based on sensor input from your network
  • Interact with off-the-shelf ZigBee Home Automation devices
  • Make your devices battery-powered and let them sleep to get months or even years of battery life

In Detail

Arduino has been established as the de facto standard microcontroller programming platform, being used for one-off do-it-yourself projects as well as prototypes for actual products. By providing a myriad of libraries, the Arduino community has made it very easy to interact with pretty much any piece of hardware out there. XBee offers a great range of low-power wireless solutions that are easy to work with, by taking all of the complexity of wireless (mesh) networking out of your hands and letting you focus on what to send without worrying about the how. Building wireless sensor networks is cost-effective as well as efficient as it will be done with Arduino support.

The book starts with a brief introduction to various wireless protocols, concepts, and the XBee hardware that enables their use. Then the book expands to explain the Arduino boards to you, letting them read and send sensor data, collect that data centrally, and then even control your home from the Internet. Moving further more advanced topics such as interacting through the standard Zigbee Home Automation protocol, or making your application power-efficient are covered. By the end of the book, you will have all the tools needed to build complete, real-world solutions.

Style and approach

A hands-on guide, featuring a single home automation project that can be built as described or with endless variations. Every step is illustrated with complete examples and screenshots, allowing you to build the examples swiftly.

About the Author

Matthijs Kooijman

Matthijs Kooijman is an independent embedded software developer who is firmly connected with the maker movement through a local fab lab and his work on the Arduino project. Since his youth, Matthijs has been interested in making things; for example, he built his first television remote control before the age of 10 (using a piece of rope to pull on the volume slider, not a solution that he would choose today). Matthijs has a firm belief in the merits of open source software and enjoys contributing to the software that he uses―both by coding and helping out other users. His work experience is broad―ranging from Web development to Linux driver hacking, from tech support to various forms of wireless networking, but almost always related to open source software in some way.

This book will walk you through some of the more tricky aspects of getting XBees configured and up and running. Admittedly I didn't think the thermostat project was the best choice but it will give you an understanding of XBee capabilities and up your toolset for other projects. I especially liked the chapter on battery power and sleeping, controlling zigbee devices and the section on how to apply encryption. It's clear the author has done a lot of research so you can get on with your projects instead of wading through documents and forums

Sylvan Slough – Just a backwater of the Mighty Mississippi. Or is it? At times there's an aura of mystery about its pleasant waters and bucolic surroundings. And in this novel that presence affects the lives of five of its users: A woman ad executive, whose recreational bike rides provoke action and reaction. A successful young banker, who gets caught up in a vision of yellow who he meets on the slough. An almost retired freight dispatcher, who made a tragic mistake early in his life. A budding high school artist, caught up in youthful romance and more. A homeless bum, who has also lived with life-long guilt. Their lives come together as the past mixes with the present in the waters of Sylvan Slough.

About the Author

Chris Dickinson

Chris Dickinson grew up in England with a strong passion for science, mathematics, and video games. He received his master's degree in physics with electronics from the University of Leeds in 2005, and immediately traveled to California to work on scientific research in the heart of Silicon Valley. Finding that career path unsuitable, he began working in the software industry. Over the last decade, he has made a career in software development, becoming a senior software developer. Chris has primarily worked in software automation and internal test tool development, but his passion for video games never fully faded. In 2010, he took the path of discovering the secrets of game development and 3D graphics by completing a second degree―a bachelor's degree in game and simulation programming. He authored a tutorial book on game physics (Learning Game Physics with Bullet Physics and OpenGL by Packt Publishing). He continues to work in software development, creating independent game projects in his spare time with tools such as Unity 3D.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent book on optimization. By Daniel Thomas Pros:* Covers all areas of optimization. Scripting, Batching, Art and Sound assets, Physics, Graphics and memory management.* Always careful to show how to test if optimizations worth doing.* Highlights differences between mobile and desktop optimizations.* Includes chapter on using the Profiler that is now free in Unity 5 Personal.Cons:* Some topics covered more than once although this is probably more noticeable as I read book cover to cover rather than just cherry picking chapters.* A few sections quite wordy and felt they could be shorter.Whilst I don't yet have a project ready to use most of the topics covered in this book I will definitely be coining back to it again when I do.
