The subject matter in these stories is for mature readers. This book contains four heartwarming Christmas stories about our feline friends and the humans who love them.Slipper's Last BreathFor most people Christmas is a time reflection, a time to share and celebrate with family and friends, but for some it is a time of sadness and quiet desperation. Then one day a stranger appears and takes her away from the safety of her kin. Confused and frightened, she is forced to endure an uncaring human and ultimately the forces of nature, in hopes of returning to the ones she loves.Christmas MourningA troubled priest struggling with doubts about his faith and vocation has an unexpected encounter with a stray, weather-beaten black cat. Review "I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend this collection to cat lovers (no surprise there) and anyone who enjoys interesting tales with a Christmas theme. Since the stories include mature themes (no spoilers), the book is more appropriate for adults. While the collection can easily be read in one day, I advise taking the time to savor each story. Hot cocoa is recommended to enhance the heartwarming experience." - onlinebookclub.org

Hands down my favorite story was "The Unwrapped Gift." It was such a beautiful story of love lost and found (and having a cute dog in it helped.) Actually every story was a heart warming read for the holidays. Thank you John - looking forward to more holiday-themed books!

Josephine Mendoza escapes poverty by coming to Kuwait from the Philippines to work as a maid, where she meets Rashid, an idealistic only son with literary aspirations. Josephine, with all the wide-eyed naivety of youth, believes she has found true love. But when she becomes pregnant, and with the rumble of war growing ever louder, Rashid bows to family and social pressure, and sends her back home with her baby son, José.

Brought up struggling with his dual identity, José clings to the hope of returning to his father's country when he is eighteen. He is ill-prepared to plunge headfirst into a world where the fear of tyrants and dictators is nothing compared to the fear of 'what will people say.' And with a Filipino face, a Kuwaiti passport, an Arab surname and a Christian first name, will his father’s country welcome him?

The Bamboo Stalk takes an unflinching look at the lives of foreign workers in Arab countries and confronts the universal problems of identity, race and religion.

Novel set in Kuwait and The Philippines (“..epic in its breadth and story..”) By TripFiction This is an incredible story of migration and rootlessness and what it means “to belong”. It is epic in its breadth and story, and explores how two unequal cultures are inextricably linked through economic need. And still, it is so much more.Josephine, originally from the Philippines, is working in Kuwait for the al-Tarouf family. The father is long dead, the matriarch, stuck in traditional values, lives with her four children, son Rashid and 3 daughters. Rashid is clearly struggling with the rigid strictures of home and culture and takes the Filipana maid as his wife, unacceptable to family and society. When they go on to have a child, José (Isa), whose story this is, the pressure becomes too much and mother and child are summarily despatched back to The Philippines.José spends what seems to be his entire childhood just waiting for his Father to summon him back to Kuwait. He has a limbo existence, uprooted and deposited, trying to straddle the duality of culture. Every time he has the merest chance of an encounter with Kuwaitis, he takes it. On Boracay – an island I visited 30 years ago, when the landing strip at Caticlan had to be cleared of chickens – he takes a menial job, and spends a pivotal evening with a group of young men from Kuwait. But time and again, those around him struggle to accept him as a member of either nationality, his looks, learning and life experience are all inhibitors to integration and acceptance.Alsanousi has a real ability to get into thinking of his chosen countries, the Philippines just comes alive, the almost insignificant interactions between José’s family members, their squabbles and traumas express more than the sum of the words. In Kuwait he captures the oppressive nature of society, the small country reflected in mores and manners, and how prejudice threads its way right through the layers of class, but how fragile it can all feel.Much credit goes to the translator Jonathan WrightOne of the best books I have read in recent time, I can only say go out and buy it!

The Bamboo Stalk is a much needed critique of religious, social, and national identity in the modern Gulf States. The argument that Gulf labor is unfair in not a new but this novel offers a look into why migrant workers continue to flood to the Gulf regardless of the treatment that awaits them. This is a must read for any student who studies the modern Arab Gulf.

By Book lvr The main character's mom leaves her homeland to work as a maid in a country with a different culture, different language. It's an act that many foreign workers do today. This was a compelling story of the son who grapples with having a Muslim name with a Filipino face. He often finds that he is accepted in neither his father's or mother's homeland as he grows from child to young adult.

At its most basic, philosophy is about learning how to think about the world around us. It should come as no surprise, then, that children make excellent philosophers! Naturally inquisitive, pint-size scholars need little prompting before being willing to consider life’s “big questions,” however strange or impractical. Plato & Co. introduces children—and curious grown-ups—to the lives and work of famous philosophers, from Descartes to Socrates, Einstein, Marx, and Wittgenstein. Each book in the series features an engaging—and often funny—story that presents basic tenets of philosophical thought alongside vibrant color illustrations.                 In The Ghost of Karl Marx, the philosopher is saddened when the town weavers must sell their cloth cheaply to compete with machines. The farmers too cannot sell their crops and have no money to buy new seeds. Forced to leave their work, the townspeople form an angry crowd in front of the factories, but what is to be done when there are so many hungry people and so few jobs to pay for food to eat? Concealed in one of the weavers’ sheets, the philosopher makes a solemn vow to give this story a happy ending by finding the Market, that infernal magician, and ridding the town of him once and for all.                 Plato & Co.’s clear approach and charming illustrations make this series the perfect addition to any little library.

Review “Where existing philosophy books for children typically focus on surveys of ideas or broad historical overviews, the Plato & Co. books take a more 'storied' approach. They take isolated events in the lives of the philosophers to illustrate their theories, aiming to teach a philosophical theory through the experience of reading a traditional picture book.” (Publishers Weekly, on the Plato and Co. series)“Great thinkers viewed from unusual angles.” (Kirkus Reviews, on the Plato & Co. series)"Damn cool coffee table books." (A. V. Club, on the Plato & Co. series 2015-11-10)“What astonishing Pocket-Marx! Charming and smart, perfect for any children’s room revolution and with a lesson for every adult as well.” (Süddeutsche Zeitung)

It explains what capitalism is and how it exploits working people. Of course the explanation is taken from Marx's economic theories. It could actually educate an adult as well as a young person. This is the only book I've encountered that was written to explained basic marxism to a child.

Best Ebook The Abandoned Western Cascade Mountain Railroad Tunnels: 1910 Wellington Avalanche, by Marques Vickers

The creation of the train routes through the Western Washington Cascade Mountains proved a monumental challenge. The conflict arose between the engineering capabilities of man and the treacherous topography and inclimate weather of the region. The nine miles of track connecting the towns of Stevens Pass, Wellington and Scenic, Washington ultimately proved a failure for the Great Northern Railway. The Iron Goat Trail that retraces the former routing is a popular hiking destination. The trailhead is easily accessible by car. The well-maintained path leads you through traces of two ghost towns that were obliterated by avalanche. In the last decade of the 19th century, railroads were the primary mode of transportation for transcontinental passenger travel and freight. Previously isolated and inaccessible portions of the country became connected. Geographical impediments were merely obstacles to overcome. As profits swelled, ambitious and bold routings were designed and realized. During the 1890s, construction innovations enabled greater travel and more direct routes. These projects, employing tunneling and snow sheds, began lining the mountainous stretches immediately past Stevens Pass on the route to the Everett and Seattle stations. Immigrant laborers cleared the hillsides of mammoth trees. They drilled and blasted rock to create a flat grade. Camps were required for the hundreds of workers to maintain the tracks and keep them operational during the winter snows. Snowdrifts on the mountains often piled as high as 25 feet on either side of the tracks, creating artificial canyons and muffling warning noises. Snow slides often trapped and delayed trains for long periods of time until snowplows and large crews could manually shovel the paths. Crossing the Western Cascades in winter was a daunting trek. Initially, the lush forests offered protection from avalanche perils. Over time, logging, grade construction and fires cleared the landscape making them vulnerable to heavy snow slides. Sparks emitted by the passing trains often ignited the forest. Along the Stevens Pass corridor between Wellington and Scenic, eight snowsheds and tunnels protected trains from the perilous conditions. Under these shelters, trains and passengers were considered safe. Exposed areas made trains susceptible to danger. Construction on the snowsheds began in 1893. Each were framed with untreated Douglas fir, hemlock and Pacific Silver Fir beams and reinforced with concrete. The interior of the structures however, created residual problems, often trapping smoke and hindering visibility. The summer heat caused the timbers to become dry and less resistant to sparks from passing trains. Maintenance costs skyrocketed during the winter months. The massive snows and periodic avalanches sometimes caused lengthy closures and worse fatalities. Derailments, destroyed bridges and the human risk factor made the decision to abandon the menacing stretch an economic necessity by 1921. Construction began in December 1925 of an alternate lower elevation extended tunnel route that remains today. Upon its completion, the doomed stretch between Stevens Pass, Wellington and Scenic was abandoned to the elements. The snowsheds and tunnels remain as relics. They have continued a slow but steady deterioration, crumbling and becoming defaced with graffiti. Their existence is a threat to the curious who enter due to unpredictable falling debris and flash flooding. Danger aside, imagination is stirred when entering these relics. On envisions a bygone era where the speed of transport was relative. A voyage by cross-country train does not match the speed required by contemporary travelers. In their silence and emptiness, the vacant tunnels and snow sheds resemble tombs depicting casualties of time. An irony persists that the most accessible remnants of this era were after the 1910 Wellington Avalanche that killed 96, the worst fatality count railroad history.

Squidoodle's Book of Fancy Letters: A Stress Relieving Alphabetical Coloring Book for Adults and Children, by Steve Turner

From the Author My style has always been considered "doodling" but where many consider this a mindless artform, to me it's satisfying and aesthetically pleasing, and perfectly suited to colorers. When I planned an alphabet book, the pencil outlines of each letter was only the start. I spent months researching the objects that would go into each letter - bonus point if you can name the animal in Q!! :) One of the main reasons I produced this book, was because people wanted to colour initials for gifts - for instance a grandmother told me she wanted to color all her grand children's initials. It seemed to me to be the perfect book for this. I hope you enjoy this book - if anyone is brave enough to try and spot every single object within all the letters, get in touch.... I may have something to reward you with. :) Squidoodle xx

About the Author Squidoodle is the name for Steve Turner: published doodle artist, tattoo designer, coloring book creator and illustrator. Now with four books to his name, Squiddy D is working on his fourth and fifth books in time for summer. A graphic designer, trained in animation, schooled in nature, lives in a campervan.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great Coloring Book with a multitude of applications By Vicki Schwam This book is great. I can't wait to use these letters for all sorts of things. The paper is a bit thin, but I scanned each page into my computer to print on card stock and also to preserve the uncolored letters for multiple uses and so I could vary the size if the letters.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Lots of fun, relaxing coloring!!! By V. Bagley This book is a blast to color! Because the art consists of fun, cartoon-style doodles, I really felt I could go all out with my color choices, not at all hindered by trying to be coordinated with hues or matching tones. Coloring doodles makes you feel free to go all over the spectrum! There is a "hidden item" element as well as you try to find the objects related to the letter. The paper quality is smooth, if a bit on the thin side, but since the designs are one-sided, that doesn't present a problem for markers as long as you use a piece of paper to prevent bleed-thru. The art is crisply hand drawn as well and objects are a comfortable size, not too tiny. Highly recommended as it made for a very relaxing, meditative coloring experience.

About the Author

Tee Morris has been writing science fiction, fantasy, horror, and nonfiction for over a decade. His first novel, MOREVI: The Chronicles of Rafe & Askana, was a nominee for the 2003 Eppie for Best Fantasy, and in 2005 the book became the first novel to be podcast in its entirety, ushering in a new age for authors. Following the podcast of MOREVI, he co-founded the audio literature hub Podiobooks.com with Evo Terra and Chris Miller, offering hours of original audio content from first-time writers and New York Times bestsellers in a podcast format. He then went on with Evo Terra to write Podcasting for Dummies (as well as the 2nd Edition alongside Chuck Tomasi). His expertise reached deeper into social media when he penned All a Twitter and Sams Teach Yourself Twitter in 10 Minutes.

In 2011, Tee returned to fiction with Phoenix Rising, the first novel in The Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences series, written alongside his wife, Pip Ballantine. The title went on to win the Airship Award for Best Steampunk Literature and become a finalist for Goodreads' Choice Awards for Best Science Fiction of 2011. Now on to their fourth book in the series, The Diamond Conspiracy, and the fourth season of Tales from the Archives, a podcast anthology featuring short stories set in their steampunk universe, the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences series has won several awards including the Parsec Award for the best of science fiction podcasts and RT Reviews' Choice Awards.

Tee and Pip also host The Shared Desk, a podcast covering collaboration and other aspects of a writer's lifestyle. He now runs the social media initiatives for Stratford University located in Maryland and Virginia. Explore the works of Tee Morris, and his occasional geek rants, at TeeMorris.com.

Pip Ballantine started life in Wellington, New Zealand as a corporate librarian. Pip earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Political Science and then a Bachelor of Applied Science in Library and Information Science. Her first professional sale as a writer was a piece on the history of Wellington, written for The Evening Post in 1997. Since then she has gone on to produce both novel-length and short-form fiction.

In 2006, she became New Zealand's first podcast novelist with her debut fantasy novel, Weaver's Web. She went on to podcast three other novels and host her own slice-of-life podcast, Whispers at the Edge. Her podcasts have won both a Parsec Award as well as the Sir Julius Vogel award for excellence. Pip's first byline in the United States was Geist (Ace Books), launching the Books of the Order series. At the same time, she also wrote for Pyr Books Hunter, Fox and Kindred, and Wings, as well as co-writing Phoenix Rising with Tee Morris, the first novel in the award-winning steampunk spy series The Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences.

When it comes to nonfiction, Pip has been seen in A Taste of True Blood (Ben Bella Books) and worked behind the scenes as technical editor for All a Twitter. Pip's short stories have appeared in anthologies such as Clockwork Fairy Tales (Roc Books) and Steampunk World (Alliteration Ink).

She continues to co-author Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences series with Tee, as well as produce their award-winning podcast, Tales from the Archives, and co-host The Shared Desk. When not writing or podcasting, Philippa loves reading, gardening, and whenever possible, traveling. A beautifully modulated novel that shows Edward St. Aubyn at his sparkling best

Charlie Fairburn, successful screenwriter, ex-husband, and absent father, has been given six months to live. He resolves to stake half his fortune on a couple of turns of the roulette wheel and, to his agent's disgust, to write a novel-about death. In the casino he meets his muse. Charlie grows as addicted to writing fiction as she is to gambling.

His novel is set on a train and involves a group of characters (familiar to readers of St. Aubyn's earlier work) who are locked in a debate about the nature of consciousness. As this train gets stuck at Didcot, and Charlie gets more passionately entangled with the dangerous Angelique, A Clue to the Exit comes to its startling climax. Exquisitely crafted, witty, and thoughtful, Edward St. Aubyn's dazzling novel probes the very heart of being.

By Sue Kichenside In his novella, Edward St Aubyn imagines what it must be like for Charlie, his narrator, to receive a death sentence from the doctor. Fleeing to the South of France to work on his legacy - a novel - Charlie meets and falls in lust with gambling-addict Angelique. The writing will be done at the tables of the Monte Carlo casino. The book within the book wherein three characters wrestle with the concept of consciousness is a tad heavy-going and cerebral. Charlie's introspection is understandable given the circumstances and spiked by this author's exceptional wit. But the prose, ah, the prose is to die for. Here's a taste of one of the lighter passages:"It's a pink house with white gates. At the front there are two palm trees, floodlit, so the burglars don't fall flat on their faces. At the back, four minuscule cypresses, like self-conscious bridesmaids, accompany the concrete driveway to the garage. If you climb on the roof and jump, you can see the sea. Inside there are still-empty niches everywhere, and tiny flights of steps leading from one thing to another. Two steps up to the kitchen, three down to the living area, one onto the patio, two into the garden, and a final glissando of steps back to the entrance area...It's as if the builder had stumbled across the concept of a step and couldn't believe his luck."

It doesn't have the wit, the characterization, the plot of the others, but I guess if you choose impending death as your topic, how witty can you be? Although he did manage brilliant wit in his trilogy which included a graphic graphic account of our hero on a drug binge to end all drug binges.

He’s a writer and he’d like to write about his impending death, but death is depressing so his agent (who wants him to continue writing screenplays) tells him to write something upbeat. Instead, Charlie sells his house, moves into a hotel, and begins work on a novel called On the Train, snatches of which appear as A Clue to the Exit moves forward. As every starving artist intuits and as Charlie soon learns, luxury inhibits ambition, so Charlie embarks on a course that will relieve him of the burden of wealth and inspire creativity. His quest takes him to a casino, where parties and a beautiful gambler interfere with his ability to solve “the riddle of consciousness” via the literary exploration of death. At some point, the beautiful gambler asks him why he’s writing what he’s writing -- what the point of it is -- and it’s a question I was asking, as well. She wants Charlie to meet his death by writing a celebration of life. Instead, he’s writing a story in which pretentious characters discuss the philosophical implications of quantum physics. While the questions they ask are worth pondering -- from Charlie’s dying perspective, the question is how to live consciously -- I agree with the gambler that the story is dry and lifeless. But that’s probably the point. As Charlie provides a pedantic explanation of the novel’s goals and the techniques he is using to achieve them, it becomes all the more clear that Charlie really doesn’t know what he wants to say.It takes a shocking amount of time for a guy with six months to live who loves but is estranged from his daughter to figure out what is important in his brief remaining life. He gains some other worthwhile insights (people should not hurt others to make themselves happy) but they are less than profound. He also arrives at the conclusion that “consciousness and experience are synonymous.” I take his meaning (I feel the sun warming my face, therefore I am) but the words really aren’t synonymous.I think Charlie's ultimate realization is that life is a collection of experiences which, again, is hardly a momentous epiphany. His last great insight is “the thing that is closest to us is the most mysterious” which made me wonder when Charlie was going to get around to dying. Someone who is devoting the end of his life to deep thoughts might want to come up with something more meaningful. Or better yet, opt for hedonism, since he’s still young enough to enjoy it.Near the end of the novel, Charlie goes on something like a vision quest that struck me as laughable. Maybe it was intended as humor. My greatest reservation about this novel is that, while some scenes are amusing, I can’t tell whether it is meant to be taken seriously. If so, I can’t. If not, too many scenes are pointless to justify reading it as a comedy. There is an abundance of good writing here, but it never adds up to much.

I originally bought it in order to get an overview of the product (so that I could better implement it into our companies cloud migration plan). However it has quickly became the Swiss army knife answer through all stages of our roll out. As well as being well written and easy to follow, the walk throughs and tips given help in almost every possible scenario. There are plenty of diagrams and illustrations to help through some of the heavier points. However the only small point I would make is that some of them seem a little low res, but not so that they are in any way unusable or unreadable. In conclusion a must have for all vRealize users or reviewers.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. While technically good, the diagrams are awful By ambati I purchased the Kindle version of this book. While technically good, the diagrams are awful. Some are impossible to view. I would advise buyers to go for the hard coipy and avoid the Kindle version like the plague.
