About the Author Chris Carthern (CCNP, CISSP) is a senior network engineer for the United States Department of Defense. He is responsible for analyzing, designing, installing, configuring, maintaining, and repairing of Cisco network infrastructure and application components and for training and mentoring junior network engineers and preparing them for Cisco CCNP and CISSP certification exams. Carthern took his BS (honors) in computer science from Morehouse College and his MS in system engineering from the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). He holds the following certifications: Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), CompTIA Security+, Brocade Certified Network Professional (BNCP), and ITIL v3.

Not useless, but needs improvement By CostumeDesigner Steampunk Your Wardrobe: Easy Projects to Add Victorian Flair to Everyday Fashions lives up to its title. After a brief definition of steampunk fashion, the author gives instructions for creating 20 trimmings, accessories, and garments, preferably from items thrifted or from the back of the reader's closet. The projects focus on the most conservative steampunk tropes: for example a necklace with key pendants, a mini top hat, a ruffled choker, and two appealing methods of ruching up long skirts. The author substitutes a plain black leather waist cincher for the common external corset made of brocade or satin. Largely missing are the more hardwarey, techy items such as goggles and gears. Oddly, also missing is the ubiquitous short bustle-overskirt, made of several ruffles of fancy materials sewn to a band, to be tied over the back of a skirt.Some projects are not perceptibly steampunk. For example, a shoulder cape cut from the upper part of an oversized coat made of camel-colored wool, with two conservative brown leather toggles added. Many lack the flair and exuberance that would turn them from rather tacky makeovers to steampunk. It's an intriguing and practical idea to, instead of wearing thin external drawers, shorten a pair of suit pants in charcoal gray wool, and then add lace ruffles. But the lace ruffles should be a statement, not the narrow, meagerly gathered, cheap-looking little bands shown here. Then there is a bright red nylon lace circle top with wobbly stitching that is simply unfortunate.The descriptions are somewhat lacking in detail for beginners, but this seems to have been required to fit 20 projects into a 103-page book. They are supplemented by good-quality photos, though most beginners will wish for additional technical shots. The real problem is the loving-hands-at-home look that pervades all projects. While I assume the publisher imposed space constraints, I wish the author had included techniques for finishing seams, hemming edges, and otherwise making higher-quality garments. For example, she could have just asked readers to use ribbons and scalloped laces for the layered, ruffled choker, instead of strips of fabrics that are shown fraying all over. And even though the projects are for beginners, it would be more inspiring to see them carried out with a professional degree of skill and taste. Take the wool shoulder cape made from a coat, mentioned above. According to the instructions, the coat is cut off at the level of the underarm seams, though the photos clearly show it at waist level, which is a better proportion but which would require some undescribed method of merging the upper sleeves into the body of the coat. It is unclear from the instructions and photos what is done with the lining. However, the outside of the coat shows the bottom of the wool bound in black cotton-poly bias binding--the usual narrow kind found at the notions counter for binding internal seams. This edge is finished, but that's all you can say for it. This shoulder cape would have been positively elegant with a wider outer facing in velvet or velveteen (a brown plaid print cut on the bias would be lovely), or with rich faux fur trimming. True, the author tells readers to vary her ideas at will--but for the most attractive results, they are positively required to.This book is suitable for beginners who want quick gratification and who are willing to toss their projects aside after a few wearings. And for experienced sewists who know how to--and are willing to--fill out and modify the instructions to produce polished, durable garments. Steampunk isn't really about ruffles or gears: it's about style.

Good for ideas, focuses on modifying not creating By Colt-kun This is an excellent idea book for steampunk fashion, and concentrates on modifying existing clothing rather than creating from scratch.That said, some of the techniques explained to modify the clothing is a little unnerving for a tailor. Much of the explanations are 'cut straight' without explaining how to avoid crooked hanging, or to leave excess for seam allowance, or to go off basic measurements and folded paper rather than an actual fitting or a pattern. This can lead to bad habits in young sewers.Still, for a beginner, this book would be great for ideas.

Projects are geared for folks with basic sewing and crafting skills - perfect for a beginner and myself, new to the genre.Particularly interested in the feather fascinator and the shoulder wrap - have finished the feather fascinator and my daughter loves it! Highly recommend and hope Calista Taylor does more books on victorian or other historic period fashions - Kudos!

I've never been a dog parent myself, but I know plenty of people who are, and as a lover of all animals, I bought a copy for a dear friend who has a dog. I'm so happy I did! I read this book from cover to cover, and I truly wish every dog parent—and especially those considering getting a dog—could do the same. Not only does Donna touch on every important topic with regard to pet parenting, she shares her own journey and is honest about her own missteps. She doesn't berate dog parents for not knowing better about certain things; she's been there herself and understands that knowledge often comes over time. Instead, she uses her years of experience, thoughtful research, and expertise as the host of The Dog Show with Jazz to give dog lovers just what the book's subtitle promises: Everything You Need to Know to Foster a Long, Loving Relationship with Your Dog.What really shines through is not just the valuable insight on subjects like nutrition, grooming, exercise, sports involvement, socialization, and even saying good-bye, but the message of love and respect for these precious living beings who bring so much to our lives. Similar to how Temple Grandin helps people see things from the animal's perspective, Donna provides that for doggie parents ... and SO much more. While every chapter is chock-full of beneficial content, I venture to guess that the emphasis on training is the most valuable. I'm certain that most dog parents don't realize just how vital training is—they simply get a dog without much thought and believe he or she will somehow fit into their lives, when that couldn't be further from the truth. Donna sheds crucial light on that topic and gives expert advice for every stage of training from puppyhood on. With her real-life stories and examples, as well as her loving touch, the reader will no doubt be enlightened and motivated to go from being merely a pet parent to being a SUPER pet parent.Even this devoted and loving kitty mommy sees pet parenting in a new light ... and every dog parent I know is receiving this book as a gift! :)

By Amazon Customer Donna's philosophy has strengthened and energized my commitment to my puppy, after being a long term pet parent on two other occasions. I am now reading it for a second time....reinforcing the knowledge and personal experience that she shares. I truly appreciate her loving and positive way with our canine friends. There is no topic that she doesn't address in this all inclusive guide to pet parenting. The chapters flow easily and are softened with her personal experiences which make it more real. It does not disappoint.In this, the fourth, novel Cyrus Cooper has left The Coalition and moved on to investigative journalism (his major in college from the last book). He has also written several novels and tried to leave his past behind. Unfortunately, a past like Cooper's rarely leaves a person alone.When an old friend leaves Cyrus his home in Colorado, it should be a perfect opportunity to relax. But from the first night in the house, things are not at all what they should be. With the sound of an alarm in the middle of the night, Cyrus is pulled into a new adventure. This one is full of the stuff of science fiction. I can't get too much into it without spoiling the journey, but I loved it.Whether or not sci-if is your thing, this book will grab you and hang on. There's action, multiple factions of enemies, a fast pace and the one-liners I've come to expect from Mr. Weaver. Can't wait for more!

By Miss Lyn In this wonderful new book,Cyrus Cooper is given. an amazing home and all that goes with it as an inheritance from a friend. Little does he know a mind blowing technology is waiting for him in the house as well.What is Halon Seven and what amazing things can do that so many would kill to get it. This is the best Cyrus ever!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A must read! By Amazon Customer I have over 500 books so when I say Halon-Seven is in my top five that means something! The first two chapters are incredible. There are individual parts of the book that are brilliant (such as the interrogation scene). What makes this book so great? First of all our hero, Cyrus Cooper, is a very well rounded and thought out character who uses his mind more than his gun. Second, the secondary players in this book pull their own weight. The Russian bad guy has a good backstory, he is not some ex-millitary muscle man who shoots everyone and says "Da" all the time. And third is the science in the book. With all works of fiction you have to believe the leaps that science can achieve. Most books string together a few dozen scientific words in hopes they can fool you into believing what you are told. In this book the science seems legit and is presented in a way that is believable and understandable. The ending of this book made me so hungry for the next chapter in this saga.

Ultimately I landed on two which I admit is kinda harsh.... but if you're going to publish an ebook about, well, publishing an ebook, you're going to be held to a higher standard.Case in point. Like most self-publishing folks, she stresses the need for a strong editor. She names her editor as being one she can really trust... (you know where this is going, don't you) YUP, this book REALLY needed an editor. That's one star. She's from the UK and to her credit she tells people to assume that the majority of your readers will be from the U.S. and to write accordingly. She EXPLICITLY says to never use only metric units but to give both for the folks in the new world... Yeah, you know where this is going too. She gives units in cm only. That cost her a star.However the biggest problem is this. What she knows she knows.... but what she doesn't know she just sorta wings and it gets ugly fast. For example: She does not 100% understand how to zip files and says to zip the files, put the zip file in a folder and zip it again just to be sure. HUH?And then there is the digital picture thing. Without sounding too much like a jerk... she has no clue what she is talking about. TO HER CREDIT she knows this is not her long suit and she says that and points you to better sources. But the physician's creed comes to mind; 'first do no harm.' Much of what she says is just wrong. Better to say less and be more accurate. AND (sadly) much of what she says is actually correct but then on another page she says the opposite. Talk about needing an editor! It's painful.But let me say again the most important line in this review. *What she knows she knows.*The first half of the book is great. I know a fair amount about publishing and I still learned a bunch. --And some of her links are incredible.-- She really found some great resources.My advice is simple. If you want to learn self publishing, buy the book just for the publishing parts. You can read the second half of the book but keep in mind a lot of what you learn will be kinda wrong in parts. If she cut off the parts she did not really know OR brushed them up so that they were as good at the first half, it would be 5 starts no brainer.Yes 2 stars is kinda harsh but see the first paragraph, I think it is tough but still fair in this case.

There is absolutely nothing special in this book that makes it worth any amount of money. You can easily find organizational tips/tricks online, or you can just use common sense.Adrienne Edwards should be ashamed for writing this 26 page piece of garbage.I am returning this book for a full refund.
