Wie viel Hass passt in ein Leben? Sie ist ohne Namen, ohne Kindheit, ohne Skrupel. Während andere zaudern, noch überlegen, was gut, was schlecht oder was richtig, was falsch ist, handelt sie bereits.

Quarry doesn't kill just anybody these days. He restricts himself to targeting other hitmen, availing his marked-for-death clients of two services: eliminating the killers sent after them, and finding out who hired them…and then removing that problem as well. So far he's rid of the world of nobody who would be missed. But this time he finds himself zeroing in on the grieving family of a missing cheerleader. Does the hitman's hitman have the wrong quarry in his sights?

The Wrong Quarry: A Quarry Novel, by Max Allan Collins

Review "The book delivers a solid and satisfying plot that will appeal to readers who like their crime especially hardboiled."- The Mystery Place.com "Fans of hardboiled suspense will enjoy Collins’ latest thriller, as it delivers up enough sex, violence, and grim humor to satisfy the most demanding pulp reader." - Mystery Scene"Collins’ forte is in writing crime novels set in period, and The Wrong Quarry captures the early eighties scene beautifully." - Blogcritics“Highest possible recommendation!” – I Love a Mystery"Very tough and cool and with a pleasantly nasty sense of humor." - Comic Book Resources"Quarry is a classic hardboiled character: tough, smart, and dangerous. The plot was lean and hard and the character wry and charming. Collins is a worthy successor to Raymond Chandler and Mickey Spillane, and Quarry may be his best character. I enjoyed this book enough that I plan on tracking down the other Quarry novels, so obviously this is highly recommended." - Fandom Post "The perfect jumping point for all newcomers and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for some intelligent hard boiled detective fun." - Upcoming4.me"Pulp fiction fans won’t be able to put their hands down on this new Quarry novel as it revolves around gritty action, hard-boiled violence and hot sex." - Retrenders"Fast-paced and full of sex and murder. Think Twin Peaks without the supernatural." - Super Punch"This book has a little bit of everything including mystery, suspense and sex." - Examiner"If you are a fan of gritty, hard boiled storytelling that shows a bit of heart……and every other organ in the human body, you might want to give The Wrong Quarry a try." - Geek Hard"Written very well." - Project Fandom"Kept me reading from page one straight till the end...a fun and twisty journey, full of great sights and meticulous detail." - Nerd Span"Quarry is an excellent addition to the catalog of hard-boiled (anti-)heroes. His exploits are different enough to bring a refreshing uniqueness to the genre without upending it entirely, and are written in such a way as to pack maximum entertainment into a fast-paced page-turner of a read." - Criminal Element"The Wrong Quarry is a great blend of suspense, sex, and sensation that will keep you engaged and intrigued until it’s surprising conclusion." - Geek Nutz"Hard-edged storytelling at its best" - Awkward Geeks"The dry wit and action throughout makes for an entertaining read and leaves you wanting more." - The Celebrity Cafe"Pure entertainment for fans of old-school, hard-boiled prose." - Booklist

The opening sentence grabs your attention and the book is a page turner right up until the surprise ending. Collins gets you involved with and caring about Quarry, even though he is pretty much amoral (Quarry, not Collins). I like all the books in the Quarry series, but this is the best. Highly recommended!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Quarry Doesn't Disappoint By Tim Field I sure would hate to come up with plots for the Quarry novels. The books are formulaic (in the very best sense) like Richard Stark's Parker books - a heist needs to be carried out, a person needs to be rubbed out. What makes the books sing are the theme and variations, the twists and obstacles that Quarry encounters in trying to complete a job (or to keep another assassin from doing his job). The author needs to strike a balance between the familiar outlines of the series and a plausible problem to propel the novel. In "The Wrong Quarry" Max Allan Collins deepens Quarry's character and has him show concern for others without making him soft and squishy, an idea that in the hands of a lesser writer could deflate like a ruined souffle. MAC deftly juggles the suspense and the human interest, making this Quarry outing especially memorable. Reviewing a Quarry novel is tough, since too much plot description acts as a spoiler to would-be readers. I guess it's enough to say that MAC provides another hard-edged, darkly funny, and twisted (and twisty) novel that will satisfy readers of hardboiled crime fiction.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Down, Dirty and Delish By Richard B. Schwartz The Wrong Quarry is dedicated to a man ‘who likes ‘em down and dirty.’ But don’t we all? You don’t pick up a Max Allan Collins/Hard Case Crime/Quarry novel with jacket art featuring a smoking 9 mm. and a woman in a revealing red nighty, expecting something by Anthony Trollope. This is pulp fiction all the way and among the very best of Collins’ Quarry novels.Quarry is a Vietnam vet who was persuaded to become a professional hitman. When the middleman who brokered the hits betrayed him, Quarry put him out of business, permanently. He then pursued a new business: tracking the other hitmen in the middleman’s card file, discovering their targets and then approaching those targets with a proposition: if you pay me I’ll remove those threatening you.In The Wrong Quarry we are in small-town Missouri, not too far from Iowa. You know you’re in the show-me state when you start seeing the signs for the fireworks stores, a heavy-handed image in a pulp novel, perhaps, but one that also squares with local realities.Quarry is shadowing one member of a two-man hit team, whose day job involves the operation of an antique store. That individual learns the living patterns of the murder target and then hands off to a wetwork assassin, in this case a very dark individual who specializes in torture/murders. The target is a dance instructor who also helps young girls prepare to compete in beauty pageants. He is discreetly gay, but also suspected of the murder of a local teenage girl. That’s the premise, but will the premise hold water or will Quarry discover that all is not quite what it seems? What do you think? In the course of the story Quarry will meet the local power brokers, romance the local women, get his ribs bruised and, perhaps . . . worse. He will need the arsenal of weapons he carries and he will have to be discerning with regard to the individuals he chooses to trust. The action is fast, the men tough, the women lush, the pulp profuse. If you like them down and dirty you’ll relish The Wrong Quarry. I certainly did.

Winner of the Society of Midland Authors Award for the Region's Best Books of 2015 (Adult Fiction)Named a Booklist Editors' Choice for 2015Longlisted for the American Library Association's 2016 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction"Compelling and necessary....[Meno] has a knack for giving small happenings emotional weight....Meno knows how to make you love his characters, want what they want. But don't think he's going to let things turn out well for them. Marvels and wonders aren't worth the trouble. Fortunately, this book is."--New York Times Book Review"[A] rugged page-turner....There's a bit of the country noir of Daniel Woodrell's Winter's Bone in the stark atmosphere Mr. Meno evokes (A faded town, fading, harried with dusty light, midafternoon), and a bit of the Clint Eastwood movie Gran Torino in the story of the vigilante grandfather. But the writing is propulsive enough to make you forget its influences. And at moments the book's consuming darkness is lifted by potent, if inscrutable visions of the talismanic horse--a flash of lightning curving along the horizon."--Wall Street Journal"But in two new books--a big novel, Marvel and a Wonder, and the anthology Chicago Noir: The Classics, published simultaneously in early September by Akashic in hardcover and paperback--we're reminded that Meno has a dark side that on occasion he lets out of jail, allowing it to cast a long and menacing shadow."--Chicago Tribune"Evoking William Faulkner and Cormac McCarthy, Meno's suspenseful, mordantly incisive, many-layered tale can also be read as an equine Moby-Dick. As he tracks the bewildering seismic shifts under way in America, Meno celebrates everyday marvels, including the hard-proven love between grandfather and grandson."--Booklist, Starred review"In this high-stakes, mordantly incisive, compassionate drama, Quentin, a mixed-race teen, is spending the summer with Jim, his white grandfather, when a magnificent white racehorse is inexplicably delivered to Jim’s Indiana farm."--Booklist, Editors' Choice"Talented Meno has penned a wise and touching novel of love, loyalty, courage; an extraordinary book not to be missed."--Library Journal, Starred review"Faulkner-ian epic for the contemporary age....[Meno] draws on the grave themes and austere styles of writers like Cormac McCarthy and Daniel Woodrell to offer a mix of biblical allegories, tinder-dry prose, and noble characters trying to survive in a wretched world....The novel's prose is marvelous is its spare, convincing grit while the story's themes of family, redemption, sacrifice, and faith echo the plays of Sam Shepard at times....A grandiose, atmospheric portrait of Middle America in all its damaged glory."--Kirkus ReviewsMarvel and a Wonder is a darkly mesmerizing epic and literary page-turner set at the end of the twentieth century. In summer 1995, Jim Falls, a Korean War vet, struggles to raise his sixteen-year-old grandson, Quentin, on a farm in southern Indiana. In July, they receive a mysterious gift--a beautiful quarter horse--which upends the balance of their difficult lives. The horse's appearance catches the attention of a pair of troubled, meth-dealing brothers and, after a violent altercation, the horse is stolen and sold. Grandfather and grandson must travel the landscape of the bleak heartland to reclaim the animal and to confront the ruthless party that has taken possession of it. Along the way, both will be forced to face the misperceptions and tragedies of their past.Evoking the writing of William Faulkner and Denis Johnson, this brilliant, deeply moving work explores the harrowing, often beautiful marvels of a nation challenged by its own beliefs. Ambitious, expansive, and laden with suspense, Marvel and a Wonder presents an unforgettable pair of protagonists at the beginning of one America and the end of another.

Marvel and a Wonder, by Joe Meno

Review "The latest by Meno is a compelling mash-up of magic and the absurd with the grittiness of a world inhabited by punks, thieves, and losers, as a grandfather and his grandson take a road trip through 1990s rural America in search of their stolen horse....This is a provocative reflection on the lives of the disenfranchised in the waning days of the 20th century, with a bittersweet resolution that will resonate with readers."--Publishers Weekly"A remarkable book; Meno deftly turns the American Dream onto its ass but displays facets of Americans that are so true that it will make your heart hurt."--Library Journal, Books for Dudes columnSelected as a Midwest Connections pick by the Midwest Independent Booksellers Association"While Meno writes in lush sentences, evoking authors like William Faulkner, his plot feels akin to Cormac McCarthy....A fitting addition to the canon of books about hard men and their relationship to nature. Discover: A pastoral novel of family, desperation and a horse like no other."--Shelf Awareness"[Marvel and a Wonder] is a unique take on the generation gap between a Korean war vet and his sixteen-year-old grandson, exploring themes like faith, sacrifice and family...With a bit of crime, tragedy and even love."--MTV News"The book draws comparisons to William Faulkner, Cormac McCarthy, and Toni Morrison. It's at once a story about two people and an exploration of the past, present, and future of the country....As the fate of the horse, of Jim Falls, of Quentin--of America!--becomes more perilous, the book picks up speed. The story is operating on different levels--as a family story, an epic, and in the end a page-turner--but they remain skillfully balanced."--Chicago Reader"An emotionally honest exploration of the human need for connection."--Newcity"In telling the story of Jim and Quentin, Meno broadens the conversation about the winners and losers of the global economy....Both [protagonist] Jim Falls and Marvel and a Wonder seem like a reimagining of those great old depression era novels by John Steinbeck and William Faulkner and Meridel Le Sueur. The book makes visible the typically invisible victims of unjust economic policies. It makes these characters people--flawed and beautiful."--The Millions"Joe Meno's latest novel is an incredible modern myth involving horses, a dying agrarian economy, and the idea of American masculinity, and it also happens to be the most spot-on depiction of north central Indiana in the mid-'90s I've ever read."--The Millions, Janet Potter's A Year in Reading"The always-wonderful Joe Meno is back with a many layered tale....This is a departure from Meno's usual novels, and borders on Cormac McCarthy territory."--Book Riot"I've long adored Joe Meno's novels, which seamlessly blend magical realism with the grittiest elements of reality....If you like novels that are both moving and exciting, then don't miss this one."--Literary Hub, The Great Booksellers Fall Preview of 2015 (selected by John Cleary from Papercuts J.P.)"Meno’s greatest gift is his love and compassion for his characters....A whole range of Southern lit influences pervade [Marvel and a Wonder], from icons like William Faulkner and Flannery O’Connor to more contemporary writers like Donna Tartt and Cormac McCarthy. He evokes the landscape in terse, no-frills language, and peppers it with menace. He confronts racism through the boy, whose father is black. The journey harrows their spirits. Meno, in other words, continues to grow as a writer, though his sensibility remains intact. The characters here are once again the engines of the book--or, more aptly, it is Meno’s interest and unwavering sympathy for them that drives it."--Literary Hub, feature on Joe Meno"I've always been impressed by Meno's ability to create true-to-life characters packaged with a high or sly humor. His latest novel, though, enters new territory with a much more serious tone, delivering a crime story with some very dark deeds, callousness, a little heart, and a bounty of beautiful writing."--Literary Hub, Interview with a Bookstore: The Mysterious Bookshop (selected by manager Ian Kern)"Joe Meno's hauntingly lovely, richly detailed Marvel and a Wonder examines the contentious and, eventually, tender relationship between seventy-one-year-old widower Jim Falls and his teenage grandson Quentin."--Hypertext"Compelling....A character-driven story of loss in America's heartland. It's a story of flawed characters and a landscape that, despite occasional beauty, has been used up and passed over....It's a book that despite its damaged characters, consistently reaches for excellence: a wonder."--Foreword Reviews"Meno has written a book that honors the values of old men and exposes their prejudices, where the young transcend their apathy to claim a fractured future."--Foreword Reviews, Reviewers' Choice: Our 2015 Favorites"Meno's stylistic inventiveness, humane curiosity and fictional range are always impressive."--Newcity, Fall Lit Preview 2015"In this ambitious epic, a man and his grandson embark on a cross-country journey to find a missing horse."--Chicago Magazine"Wonder explodes into a breakneck thriller as grandfather and grandson try to recover the horse, and run into characters even more nefarious than the horse thief."--Capital Times"A Moby Dick for Middle America."--Wisconsin State Journal"[The novel] pays testament to human persistence, in the persons of grandfather and grandson, as they carry on to retrieve what's theirs. Meno excels at setting a scene, and most chapters begin with a short, single paragraph, almost poetic in its description of place. One particularly vivid scene captures [one character] crawling around in broken glass on his kitchen floor, scratching up change. It's this kind of tragic vision that makes Marvel And A Wonder something of a miracle."--Santa Fe New Mexican"The grit is palpable in Joe Meno's Marvel and a Wonder....reminiscent of Gran Torino....in the same vein as Cormac McCarthy."--Des Moines City View"Though Meno crafts a dramatic arc that is both compelling and approachable, his true stride is found in the way small moments are expanded to feel monumental through simple dialogue or the way Quentin actively watches his grandfather breathe, just to make sure he is still alive....Though characters have a layer of complexity elevated above everyday experiences, Meno includes small moments of intense, capital H humanity."--Columbia Chronicle"In his gritty new novel, Marvel and a Wonder, Chicago writer Joe Meno has reinvented himself again, exploring the haunting human and natural landscapes of the rural Midwest in the vein of the Coen brothers' Fargo and No Country for Old Men....Bleak and beautiful."--Gapers Block"I had high hopes for Marvel and a Wonder, but it's not the novel I was hoping for--it's better....In the dark corners of this world, Meno finds light and beauty to suddenly thrust before readers....Meno's skillful interplay of light and shadow propels the plot through what could be, in another writer’s hands, dozens of pages of monotonous driving, and it keeps the book on the palatable side of the Western Noir genre for readers who can't stomach Cormac McCarthy. To dismiss it as just genre writing, however, is a great mistake. Not only is it too beautiful for that, it is also gloriously woven through with loose ends, unanswered questions, and ambiguity."--Books & Whatnot"Winner of the Discover Great New Writers Award and the Nelson Algren Award, among other honors, Meno can be entertainingly outré. This story of a man and his grandfather hunting for their stolen horse is also affecting."--Library Journal, Barbara Hoffert's Prepub Alert"Just finished Marvel and a Wonder...It's all I did for two days. Amazing."--Susan Straight, author of A Million Nightingales"Marvel and a Wonder is such a tender love story. The love of an irascible grandfather for his baffling grandson; the love for a mysterious horse; the love for a country that no longer seems to love us back. Joe Meno writes with poise and wit and stunning amounts of empathy. What a beautiful story. What a lovely book."--Victor LaValle, author of The Devil in Silver"Both sprawling and intimate, Marvel and a Wonder is a vivid portrait of Heartland America, and infuses its array of characters with humor, empathy, and insight. I've long been an admirer of Joe Meno's work, and this is his most ambitious book yet."--Dan Chaon, author of Await Your ReplyPraise for Joe Meno:"A beguiling and slyly disquieting storyteller...Meno transforms wintery Chicago into a wondrous crystallization of countless dreams and tragedies, while telling the stories of two derailed young artists...poignant and funny."--Kansas City Star on Office Girl"The wisest, most humane and transcendent novel on the contemporary family since The Corrections...A marvelous book."--Irvine Welsh on The Great Perhaps

The spare prose and the terse, yet meaningful conversations help evoke a sense of the characters’ lives, values and beliefs. The richly detailed descriptions of the stark settings create an intimate portrait of the locales in which the novel takes place.Seventy-one year old widower, Jim Falls is on the verge of losing the property that has been in the family for generations. His daughter Deidre, who abuses multiple substances and engages in destructive relationships, has once again left her fifteen-year old, multi-racial son Quentin with Jim. Sometimes sullen and withdrawn, Quentin is both wise beyond his years – commenting on Jim taking flowers to a widow, Quentin tells him that he is doing so for the potential they will aid in his being able to engage in intimate relations with the widow – and extremely tenderhearted – he insists on holding a burial service for a dead chick. An unusual bequest from unknown individuals results in Jim gaining ownership of a white mare. Her racing ability attracts the interest of thieves and, when the horse is stolen, initiates Jim’s and Quentin’s cross-country search to recover her. As their quest progresses, various secondary characters and subplots enter the mix creating a multi-layered story and highlighting different relationships between the characters. In the final chapters and as the story reaches its climax, Jim and Quentin realize what and who are important to their lives and to the future. The characters – both primary and secondary – peopling the pages of “Marvel and A Wonder” are deeply flawed, yet extremely engaging. A former MP who worked in the vice unit, Jim is still haunted by his partner’s death. He values the principles that guided him both during his service and in his daily life – loyalty, integrity, a sense of duty, and self-sacrifice. Deidre, Jim’s daughter is the least appealing character to grace the pages of this fine novel. Pampered and spoiled by her parents, she has never learned to take responsibility for her own actions. “…You never gave me love …you were always so …stingy …That’s why I’m the way I am …” When Quentin tells Jim he hates his mother, Jim replies “…No …You love her …This is why it hurts like it does …” Explaining why things happen for bad as well as for good, Jim tells him “…the Devil sometimes wins …” Because of their ineptitude, the two horse thieves, Edward and Gilby, seem somewhat like Laurel and Hardy. Nevertheless, Edward is a violent psychopath while Gilby does have a sense of morality and humanity. “…he saw what he had done – causing this thing of beauty to suffer – was damnable, would be a source of great, lifelong doom …”The imagery Joe Meno creates is outstanding. In one passage, he describes a standoff between two of the characters that could well have been a scene from an old-time Western. “…The two of them – the grandfather and the horse – stood like an old-time photograph …white hat tipped back …a grim expression on his face …The stranger steadied himself …and it was then that the grandfather went for his gun …Grimacing, the stranger pointed the gun at the [grandfather] …” Other portions of the narrative are equally strong and create vivid images in the reader’s mind.Emotional need, awareness of self, love of family and country, and the realization that not only are we responsible for our own actions but also the well-being of others become paramount in the messages that “Marvel and A Wonder” convey. It is my pleasure to recommend to you and to others “Marvel and A Wonder”.

All the characters in Marvel and A Wonder are depressing - losers, run-aways, drunks, drug dealers, con men, and killers... so many times I almost stopped reading, I wish I had. I was hoping for a happy ending; so much for that hope. That said, Joe Meno is an incredible author. I just wish he had chosen a less depressing story.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Cormac McCarthy meets Leif Enger By Meg Sumner Subtlety is the power behind this novel, Joe Meno crafts a character driven story that is not sentimental or sweet, but touching because the work is so raw and real. Nothing is sugar-coated. A flaky mother who abandons her son is described purely as she is with no moral judgment passed. That's what the reader brings to the book: their own mental evaluation of grandfather, daughter, and grandson. The spare writing reminds me a bit of Cormac McCarthy. The interactions between characters reveals more by what is not said than what is. In fact, it's the absence of certain preconceived emotions and ideas that make the story so powerful. As a reader, you are challenged to go beyond expectations.

The only thing keeping it from having 5 stars for me is a few projects from the website are missing here that I was hoping to get more detail on. Specifically the concrete and live wood edge bedside tables (I was hoping to get more in depth instructions on the building of the mold) and the concrete lamps using water bottles as molds (to better learn how to get the bottles out when the concrete is cured). It would have been cool too to have more of the smaller projects from the site, but I'm nit picking. All and all this is a fun and informative book. Nice to add to the collection on DIY books on my shelf and I can't wait to experiment with the projects :)

Ben's project designs are fairly easy to make with a few tools, and they will look awesome in my house! There is a great variety of furniture and decor pieces. Love how the book is laid out. Photos and instructions are easy to follow. The book, in and of itself, is really cool. Everyone who sees it picks it up and finds projects they want to make. Buying more as gifts.

We made the bar stools and changed a few things on them. We needed them taller - no problem, just get longer pipes! We used all 2 x 4's, placing the foot rests flat so that they were wider. Also, we secured the seats with u-clamps because we had trouble drilling holes through the 2" side - it might be easier with a drill press, but we don't own one. They came out great and we have had so many compliments on them! Onto our next project!

?I really need your help!? said the woman on the phone. ?A note has been slipped into my purse. It says, Beware ... a dirty trick!? Max Monroe can't believe Rhonda Remington, his favorite author, is calling the Monroe Detective Agency looking for his help! It's hours before Rhonda competes for a spot in the Mystery Hall of Fame, and she's desperate to find out who wrote the note and what kind of dirty trick they're planning for her big night. Max is thrilled to take her case. He may be only ten years old, but he's a clever detective. And of course he has his partner, Uncle Larry, to help him. Well, as much as an uncle who's a ghost can help! With funny dialogue and a cast of oddball characters, author L. M. Falcone (a former private investigator herself) continues to delight with this third title in her early chapter book series about a super-talented boy detective who solves cases with the ghost of his uncle Larry. Though having a ghost sidekick that no one else can see creates opportunities for hilarious misunderstandings and mayhem when Max and Uncle Larry are out in public, at its heart, this is a true whodunit. The slowly building storyline allows children to exercise their critical-thinking skills as Max gathers clues and draws up a list of suspects. And the segmented chapters, short sentences and line drawings throughout add to the appeal of this mystery series for newly independent readers.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Another Fair, Early-Reader, Mystery By Pop Bop It's a formula, but it's a formula that works.Max is a ten year old detective who is assisted by the ghost of his Uncle Larry, a failed detective who now has a chance at redemption as Max's invisible assistant. (Uncle Larry is there for comic relief; the mysteries aren't solved through any magical intervention by Larry.)Here, someone plans to pull a dirty trick during Max's client's performance at a story-telling contest. Max is called in to discover and foil the trickster. As always, the classic mystery conventions are observed. There are three suspects with motives and opportunity, a crime/trick, red herrings, multiple clues, and then a meeting of the suspects at which the villain is revealed. The reader is teased as Max uncovers possible motives. Clues are scattered about. Tension is built, and then the reveal is efficient and satisfying. These are for early readers so they aren't exactly airtight. But that's O.K. because for me the important aspect is that they are fair as mysteries and engaging and amusing as stories. The length is good and the story zips along, so the reader can stay invested in the mystery as it unfolds. Some funny bits and a few puns from Uncle Larry add to the entertainment value. It seems that these Max Monroe books would be successful with any early reader with an interest in the form. Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

Max was called and relied upon to solve a case where someone plotted to ensure Nellman, a mystery writer, would win the contest. His only clue is a note warning about a dirty trick and he has limited time to identify the culprit before all is lost.

It is a beginning chapter book for young readers and I think it will be a hit. Max is a ten year old detective who is assisted by the ghost of his Uncle Larry, a failed detective who now has a chance at redemption as Max's invisible assistant. Uncle Larry is able to help Max by going through walls to save Max time, but otherwise is there to cause trouble (i.e. eating food so it looks like it is floating in the air, then disappearing). In this story, Max gets a phonecall from an author who is up for admission into the Mystery Writer's Hall of Fame. She has found a note saying someone is going to play a dirty trick on her. She is worried this will cause her to lose the contest to enter the Hall of Fame. Max heads off to the contest to solve the mystery. There are 3 suspects who all have motive and opportunity to "Play the Dirty Trick". As the night moves on, Max and Larry snoop, listen and deduce who the culprit is. The trick still gets played, but it does not ruin the contest as they are going to do it again. This is a cute mystery that will engage young readers. The chapters are short and the story moves along at a good pace. There are just enough illustrations (black & white) to add to the story, but not overwhelm it. A good book and hopefully series for kids. Thanks to Netgalley and Kids Can Press for the opportunity to read and review this book.
