Coral When I turned to page 337 on "Working with Messages" I had no idea that I could see the time associated with each and every text message by swiping to the left and holding it there. This reminds me that even though I consider myself an "advanced" iPhone user, I still have things to learn from these books!I really like the formatting of this book where it splits many of the pages with how-to steps on the left, and screenshots on the right. This is a nice and condensed way of presenting information, so you get a very comprehensive resource in 653 pages. This iPhone instruction book is also useful as reference guide even if you think you know everything about the iPhone but just need to catch up with the iOS feature updates. My other favorite instruction manual is "iPhone: The Missing Manual" by David Pogue. The upcoming 9th edition of that book will be released in January 2016. The book by David Pogue tends to have more interesting stories about why certain iPhone features are designed the way that they are, and some best tips I've seen anywhere. If you have only two iPhone instruction manuals in your collection, I recommend this QUE book by Brad Miser and the Missing Manual by David Pogue. Here are some examples of pages opened at random.

Complete, Lucid and Well Written By Paul Cassel I feel a bit embarrassed about this review because before reading this book, I thought I was at least an advanced intermediate user of my iPhone 6 and its iOS 9 system. However, I leaned at least one thing from every chapter in this book and more than one in most. The book is that complete.Complete does not mean complex though. At over 600 pages this is a large book and therefore comprehensive. Each chapter covers an aspect of using the iPhone and its iOS 9 software which I had a bit of a quibble about. The material is exhaustive but not tedious in presentation due to the lucidity of the text and the author’s adding a bit of humor in things like the people in his Contacts (Scottish heroes mostly). My quibble is that for beginners and experts alike, if the book had two passes for each subject, one for basic info and one for advanced subjects beyond basic usage, both ends of the knowledge group would be better served. The experts don’t need the basic and the newcomers may be overwhelmed in how much material is in each chapter. Well, that’s my idea and it may not be correct.Despite the limiting name, a good deal of material is valid for the iPad too. The author does cover both the iPad and Mac when the use of the iPhone intersects with them. I spotted no technical errors in the text but did note a few screens modestly different in my current (as of this review) iOS 9 where the author had to have been using an earlier version. None of these discrepancies are major enough to cause any but momentary confusion. The only areas missing are the gray advanced ones such as hacking the phone or jailbreaking. If you’re looking for tutorials on these, move on pilgrim. However,if you’re seeking a complete and well explained / illustrated tour of your iPhone and iPad, this is the place.

The original iPhone, like today, did not come with a real instructions manual. Many publishers/writers wrote their own, claiming to be the “lost” manual. I owned one of those books; it was a few hundred pages.Things have changed. The newest iPhones and their newest OS is much more complex, and with all of those changes comes bigger books. My iPhone, 9th Edition, by Brad Miser, is a whopping 653 pages!!! Yes indeed, the iPhone has come a long way. This is an excellent book, and it does a great job of explaining all of the iPhone’s function in great detail. Books like this always come with pictures, diagrams, and arrows, and this one is no exception. The reason the book is so big is because I think Miser included a picture of nearly every page, setting, and app. This is very helpful for those first learning their phone. In some ways, this becomes the missing manual. However, if you are like me, you already know how to use a smart phone, specifically the iPhone. Most iPhone users will skip a majority of the book. However, if you have an older iPhone and are just now updating to the iPhone 6, for example, you will find many helpful tidbits of information you did not know before.I do not think most people will read this book cover to cover. It is more like a reference guide—it is there when you need it, with 17 chapters breaking down the core functions of the phone. I can see someone jumping to a specific chapter, such as Managing Contacts, just to learn about some of its new features. Overall, I can easily recommend this book to any new iPhone user, or anyone with a new iPhone looking to learn about the new features.
