For fifty-eight-year-old Hannah Walker the Afton Marches are a source of solace and comfort. Walking beside the Afton River, through the life-rich saltmarsh gives her respite from the hospital room where her psychologically abusive husband lies dying.

Handsome and reserved, sixty-one-year-old Leslie Willoes is a landscape artist who has spent the last fifty years exploring, painting, and loving the Marches. He’s seen Hannah often, has included in her in his paintings, but has never spoken to the woman he secretly calls His Lady.

Unscrupulous Manhattan developer, Rawden Darien, aims to trump Trump by acquiring the last undeveloped coastal wetland between New York and Boston and transforming it into an upscale marina, hotel, and retail complex for big spenders. Leslie is offered a large commission to paint the landscapes that will sell Darien’s vision. Will he?

Two people: one seeking healing in the Marches she’s finding herself in, one dreading the wetland’s grim future. Pushed in different directions by their friends, their actions will determine the future of the Marches—and their own.

Hypnotically visual and vivid, Afton is Ellen LaConte’s stirring debut novel.

The sense of place enveloped me as I read, as much as the actual marsh would surround a canoe slipping through the water. I think it's quite rare to find that in writing, maybe not enough writers actually experience being in that world. I also really enjoyed the characters and interactions; each was distinct and human, conveyed with a clear sense of what they were like visually and emotionally. My favorite scene was the one in which Hannah jousted with Frazier, it was fun to vicariously experience her accessing her own power. The novel communicates what might even be considered a "coming of age" story, though Hannah is well into middle age. Her discovery of her own self; her preferences, her emotions, and her strengths, made it fascinating to read. A terrific book!

If you like to read captivating novels that also leave you more informed- Afton is for you! If you look for novels that enhance your inner life, look no further. In this novel you will meet several complex and memorable characters who will inspire you in your present life. They await you in this compelling story. In the sensitive and skillful hands of author Ellen LaConte even an endangered salt march becomes a beloved central "character." Researchers have proven that quality literature enhances characteristics such as empathy in its readers. This is such a book. If you read only one novel this year, I encourage you to read this one. It didn't seem my sort of "thing." I love mysteries and thrillers. I couldn't have been more wrong. I put others aside to read it, thinking I'd just get it over with, and then was sorry I'd finished. I KNOW people like these characters. I genuinely liked most of them and liked disliking the others! And the ending, not the one I assumed, was almost too perfect, at once sad, irritating and happy. The discussions that would grow out of Afton in a book club I'd like to be a fly on the wall for!
