About the Author Sunny Weber has over 25 years of experience in animal welfare advocacy. She has experience in rescue, fostering, medical care, service and therapy dog evaluation and training, shelter and sanctuary work and specializes in the rehabilitation of fearful animals. Sunny has rehabilitated then re-homed hundreds of dogs, cats and horses. A professional humane educator, Sunny consults with animal welfare professionals as well as adopters and has developed educational programs that address all ages regarding the need for compassion, respect, and care of domestic and wild animals. She writes extensively on animal issues through fiction, non-fiction, public relations, fundraising, and blogs. Sunny lives in Colorado with dogs, cats and parakeets. Their yard is a Certified Backyard Habitat for birds, squirrels, rabbits, pollinators, and any other creature with fur or feathers who wanders in.

It is chock full of specific and concrete strategies to foster that connection, brought to life through extraordinary, poignant scenarios describing how individual dogs became fearful and how they learned to trust again. As a professional educator, I was especially struck by how much of the information in this book could also pertain to working with troubled children! I was delighted by the early reference to Karen Pryor; when I had young children, her book, "Don't Shoot the Dog," was a life saver for me.

By dorianna Shrader Sunny, I am so excited about this book and the gift it will be to so many people and their loving companions. I love it, and I cannot wait to buy a number of copies to give to my clients. In my practice an understanding of how the brain works, as well as skills and tools, aids in the ability to "Read" ourselves and be responsive to others. As you write about working with the Limbic brain and cortex in dogs, the readers that choose to follow your lead, will only gain more in their own compassion. I so appreciated the blend of science, stories, and practicality that created such a beautiful tapestry in your book. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I have a fearful dog and love this book! By hughesjv If you wonder why your dog is being weird, this is a great place to start figuring it out. This is not a sit-stay instruction book; it is a book to show you what kinds of signals your dog is sending that you maybe aren't understanding. Sunny explains how dogs respond when they are fearful and gives plenty of real-life examples. Sometimes my dog hides behind me; other times she snaps and lunges, but both are fear responses, even though the lunging would appear to be aggression. Learning what your dog fears, and helping her learn to cope with her accompanying anxiety can pave the way for a very satisfying relationship with your dog. It might never be that she can go frolic in the dog park or be safe off leash, but she can grow beyond chewing up your socks while you are in the bathroom without her. She can learn to not be afraid of a new winter coat or a new washing machine. This book is such an encouragement for those of us who love a non-confident dog, especially after having had confident dogs in the past. It is also a good read for anyone who currently has a confident dog to enable that owner to understand the signals a fearful dog is sending your way as you approach, perhaps on a walk with your own dog, so you can be a help to both the fearful dog and her owner. It's a great read for everyone who loves dogs!
