By Carla Martin Fox, RN THERE HAVE BEEN FEW BOOKS I CAN'T PUT DOWN.This inaugural novel from Denise Pattiz Bogard -- was one of them.A diversely talented and gifted writer from the "burbs" of St. Louis county, Ms. Bogard has formulated fascinating, multi-dimensional characters from her professional background of working with inner-city youth as a spirited and resolute writing mentor for "Lift for Life Academy" Charter Middle and High School in downtown St. Louis.Ms. Bogard has veraciously created a complex (but genuinely likable and believable) suburban protagonist character, who responds (impulsively??? irrationally???) to a desperate newspaper "HELP WANTED" classified ad for a live-in foster mother at a ramshackle economically distressed north St. Louis neighborhood's last-chance "GIFT" (Girls In Family Trouble) group home.Primary job description: "to guide the girls through the academic and emotional challenges of high school." Good luck-- you'll need it.The author's background gives the characters and story line the "punch" -- and cutting authenticity and insightful credibility necessary to lay the foundation, propel the engaging story throughout, and keep the characters "real" with plausible situational dilemmas, despicable adolescent acting-out behavior, and blasphemous jargon (definitely not for the puritanical reader). Many twists and turns ensue as the character randomly processes her former life, is thrust back into the reality she has taken on, and ultimately-- pragmatically conceives her personal entangled future. The tender but saucy story, written in a very contemplative and introspective manner, draws the reader into the drama to the extent that the reader truly roots for the girls as well as their courageous mentor trying to escape her own painful past, fulfill the commitment she made, and come to terms with her own personal demons. The characters are akin to the irrepressible character Helen Keller and her emotionally wounded but tenacious hero Annie Sullivan in "The Miracle Worker" -- and don't we all need a hero these days? The lead character progresses through the trials and tribulations of managing these four emotionally comprised and traumatized young hormonal females-- endeavoring to guide and keep them out of harm's way (with opportunisitic negative influences lurking around every corner)-- while struggling with her own skeletons in the closet. In doing so, she gradually gains insight into the rationale for why she sought out this formidable challenge in the first place... and how that decision serendipitously set in motion the story's fortuitously poignant culmination that materializes at the oddest of venues. WOW. I hope there is a sequel in the making.

Dynamics are built among the characters which make the book tough to put down and compel an eager return. The author displays the confidence to boldly give voice to bigotry, on occasion, and to intimate the grains of truth that prevent simple dismissal. Most poignantly, young lives that have been warily closed to their harsh worlds are rendered with an honesty, understanding, and authenticity to their ambiance which leave an abiding impression and challenge the uninitiated.

It tells the story of a middle class Jewish woman who suddenly gets divorced and decides to become the house-mom of four inner city children. Though the book isn't about race, it is an incredibly moving window into many different worlds. The characters are deeply alive, and the story telling is very crisp. Don't let the description above fool you--it's a great read! Denise is a superb writer. Do yourself a favor and buy this book!
