18 of 19 people found the following review helpful. I was very disappointed in the book By J. Spears I was very disappointed in the book. A decent list of equipment but no useful information on using equipment. I am okay with using old equipment since many times there is great value in purchasing a piece of used gear. It is important to help one understand the trade offs given that so much equipment has become digital reducing the cost substantially. More important than the gear is using the gear. I wish the book had spent more time on helping one to learn and use equipment in the workshop.

There was an imbalance in the discussion of test equipment. The focus was more on old, outdated equipment. World War II surplus equipment? Really? If someone is putting together a ham workshop, are they going to buy 40 or 50 year old instruments? I don't think so.At times this book seemed to be more the musings of an old time ham wandering down memory lane than how to put together a contemporary ham workshop.

It reads more as the history of the author from 1950 till today. I think it is a missed opportunity for the ARRL. I hoped for a book for the beginning HAM operator to advise him setup and use of a workshop, and to help him in doing measurements etc.
