Sam and Dave, who are either identical twin boys or friends who look astonishingly alike and share a sartorial sensibility, set out to dig a hole in the hopes of finding "something spectacular." With shovels in hand, the boys (with an eager terrier looking on) begin to tunnel into the soil, but they just can't seem to find anything of interest. What works spectacularly is the clever play between words and pictures. As in Klassen's This Is Not My Hat (Candlewick, 2012), readers are in on a joke to which the characters are oblivious. Namely, that each time the boys change direction, they narrowly miss discovering increasingly enormous jewels hidden in the earth. The book progresses with each verso showing the boys' progress, while the recto features simple text, mostly dialogue between the practical but unlucky explorers. About halfway through, a spread reveals a diamond so large it can barely be contained on the page; it dwarfs the two boys and their trusty canine companion—but all for naught, since they decide to dig in a different direction. Exhausted and covered from head to toe in dirt, Sam and Dave decide to take a rest. Klassen's use of muted earth tones and uncomplicated compositions is paired well with Barnett's deadpan humor. As they nap in their hole, the dog continues to dig…until suddenly the trio is falling; they soon land in a place that looks an awful lot like home. Small details reveal that this house and its inhabitants are ever so slightly changed. Are they dreaming? On the other side of the world? In a different dimension? Sam and Dave are two young boys who along with their canine companion set about a favorite activity of young boys everywhere. They are digging a hole, and they are going to dig until they "find something spectacular." The humor in this book relies on the interaction between the perfectly deadpan text and the engaging visuals. While the boys make decisions about which direction they are going to dig, the pictures let us in on the truth - they are barely missing the treasure they seek with each change in direction. The boys persevere, sharing snacks of animal crackers and chocolate milk, before finally falling asleep. I loved the fact that it was the dog that finally dug through to reach something spectacular, but what did he find? That's the question that lies at the end of this engaging picture book. Dog and boys fall down, down, down and land in a place that looks a lot like home...but is it? Astute readers will pick out small differences that will only add to the questions. Did they arrive back at home, or someplace totally new?Fans of Klassen's I Want My Hat Back will recognize his trademark style of simple forms and lines. The design uses lots of white space, and the illustrator does a magnificent job of maximizing the humorous impact of each spread as the boys come incredibly close to their treasure. Little details such as the small dog's search for a bone, and the luminous eyes of both boys and canine will draw readers back time and time again to go along on this digging adventure.Readers will either love or hate the ending of this tale, but I for one loved it and am sure young readers and their parents will enjoy discussing the possibilities as these young explorers drop through the bottom of their hole. Sam and Dave Dig a Hole is another unique and memorable offering from two picture book masters. Don't miss it!

These boys are on a mission and won't stop until they find something spectacular. Soon they have dug themselves in above their heads. Dave refuses to stop until they find something. After eating their cookies and drinking their milk, they ultimately fall asleep from exhaustion. The boys wind up falling and falling, yet they fail to see the treasure that eludes them.The book has lots of humor and a surprise ending. Seems like the family dog knows where the treasure is all the time. Proves the point that spectacular means different things to different people. Generally I do not enjoy books with so much white space and sparse, stylized illustration, but this in this case using the earth tone colors and simple conversation, it fits the bill. Targeted for preschoolers and early elementary age children, but some aspects of the story are subtle which may lead some children to ask for explanation.
10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Engaging and delightful story By James Korsmo This fun little story has been a huge hit with my boys (four and seven). It's a simple tale of two boys and their dog who decide to dig a hole, and to keep digging until they find something spectacular. There are some near misses along the way (I find my kids telling the boys to go the other way so they find the diamond; they can't seem to help but interact with the story). The dog is a delightfully fun companion for the boys, and the only one who seems to have an inkling of where the real treasures are. And an unexpected ending will give you plenty of food for thought. The illustrations are just perfect; simple but engaging. What a great story. Highly recommended.
