Chambers Three years ago, I reviewed author Sean Hammer's first Kindle Single, Cornbread (Kindle Single), which I loved. It was worth the wait for his next one, "Happy Birthday, Cumberland Bixby." It's a very original story about a man who woke up dead on the morning of his 34th birthday. Not that anyone cared, mind you. As a failed baseball player and a failed actor, Cumberland Bixby really didn't have a lot worth living for. Even his girlfriend had left him. But still, he hadn't intended to die, either literally or figuratively, on that day.On his final stroll through town, Cumberland went searching for answers to his untimely demise and learned some universal truths as well as meeting his creator. It's an intriguing way to look at life and death in our "fifteen minutes of fame" era.

I read his previous Kindle Single, “Cornbread,” which was a compelling story about an abused Arkansas housewife who murders her husband. This story is very different and shows Mr. Hammer’s significant range. The plot is complex, but he tells the story skillfully. He kept me guessing — there is a whiff of magical reality here — and always wanting more. And he delivered. It is smart and sophisticated, told with a kind of smoothness that is thoughtful and readable. I think Mr. Hammer has a bright future. He’s 2 for 2 on Kindle Singles and I look forward to his third time at bat.
