6 of 9 people found the following review helpful. The lousy cause By Annie Van Auken Edward A. Pollard's ultimate contribution to American history turns out to only be the title of this book. His coining of "THE LOST CAUSE" has entered the vernacular, particularly of those sympathetic to the South. Pollard, who was the editor of the Richmond Examiner during the war, wrote four yearly volumes on the struggle for Secession's progress as events unfolded. These eventually were combined into one large volume entitled SOUTHERN HISTORY OF THE WAR-- a highly opinionated and often inaccurate accounting. The first sentence of the intro to Pollard's next work, "The Lost Cause," aptly sums up the tenor of his previous publication:"The facts of the War of the Confederates in America have been at the mercy of many temporary agents; they have been either confounded with sensational rumours or discoloured by violent prejudice: in this condition they are not only not History, but false schools of present public opinion."After thus condemning of the work of others, Pollard then goes on to promise that his latest rehashing of the momentous events of 1861-65 would be free of extranea and would present fact rather than opinion. He immediately breaks both vows in chapter one's very first paragraphs, with his strained justification of Southern secession based on the idea that some inhabitants of the pre-United States British colonies considered each of them a sovereign nation. Pollard in his lifetime never accepted the concept of the USA as a single entity, and repeatedly argued his point while fastidiously avoiding the subject of slavery. But does such debate fodder belong in a purported unbiased history is the real question.Although some of the glaring factual errors of "Southern History.." stood corrected in this 1867 publication (Gettysburg was no longer claimed as a Confederate victory, for example), Pollard's burning hatred of the North and its leaders continues unabated. This so-called "history" makes no mention of Lincoln's assassination beyond a despicable comment that the Northern president's earnest request for a band to play "Dixie" during his April 1865 visit to fallen Richmond was "Lincoln's last joke."Pollard's paragraph-length sentences and use of pages-long footnotes of questionable merit bog down what is already a difficult read. The editor-turned-writer needed editing himself. THE LOST CAUSE often goes beyond the political and military events of the Civil War-- at times it's an opportunity for a Southern partisan to spew a bias well-fermented in the bitter acid of defeat.
