About the Author

Ashley Ohmann

Ashley Ohmann started her career in technology as a Flash and HTML developer at the Emory University School of Medicine while studying Classics as an undergraduate at Emory University. After learning how to write SQL to help create a fraud detection system for a client, she pursued information management and data analytics as a vocation. While working for a multinational manufacturing company, she was asked to evaluate Tableau Desktop and Tableau Server; consequently, her team became one of the first to implement the suite of tools for their enterprise. Ashley's career with Tableau's products has included work as a consultant, trainer, and a professional services practice director. She is a frequent contributor to the San Francisco and Phoenix Tableau User Groups. A native of Highlands, NC and Atlanta, GA, Ashley is a proud alumna of Rabun Gap – Nacoochee School. She also studied German and Chemistry at Mount Holyoke College before graduating from Emory. Ashley's roots go back to south Georgia; she grew up listening to the stories of her large extended family, which inspired her to spend her career helping other people learn how to tell their own stories using a variety of media. Currently, she lives in the Pacific Northwest with her family, where they enjoy skiing, the beauty of God's great creation, and practicing permaculture on their 10 acre farm.

Matt Floyd

Matt Floyd has worked in the software industry since 2000 and has held career roles from project management to technical writing and business intelligence analysis. His career has spanned many industries, including environment, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and insurance. Matt's hands-on experience with Tableau started in 2008 after evaluating alternatives to reporting and analytical software used by his clients. Since then, he has been a technical writer, implementation engineer, consultant, developer, and analyst in BI projects. His passion for Tableau stems from his fascination of discovery through data and the art, science, and power of data visualization. He is currently interested in text mining and the combination of that data with powerful visualizations that tell fascinating stories. He and his family live in metro Atlanta, and when not stuck in traffic, he sometimes offers musings on his blog covering various visualization topics at http://floydmatt.com/.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. There are better (generic-Tableau) options By Dimitri Shvorob Wishing to learn Tableau, I downloaded an evaluation copy of Tableau Desktop, viewed about 20 (high-quality and very helpful) videos in the "Tableau Training & Tutorials" section of tableau.com, and finally ordered a batch of Tableau books from Amazon - Amazon.co.uk, in my case - with the intention of reviewing the alternatives and leaving one or two titles for further study. The contenders included:"Tableau Data Visualization Cookbook" by Nandeshwar, Packt, 172 pages, £24 for a new paperback"Creating Data Stories with Tableau Public" by Ohmann and Floyd, Packt, 222 pages, £23"Rapid Graphs with Tableau 8" by McDaniel, Apress, 252 pages, £29"Learning Tableau" by Milligan, Packt, 340 pages, £33"Communicating Data with Tableau" by Jones, O'Reilly, 334 pages, £18"Tableau For Dummies" by Monsey and Sochan, Wiley, 352 pages, £22"Tableau Dashboard Cookbook" by Stirrup, Packt, 336 pages, £29"Tableau 9: Official Guide" by Peck, McGraw-Hill, 352 pages, £24"Tableau Data Visualization Cookbook" was the first book to be eliminated... and then "Creating Data Stories with Tableau Public" followed. I actually like it - although it is undermined by Packt's no-frills presentation (contrast to the colorful non-Packt titles), it is written well, and with just the right amount of hand-holding for a newbie user. However, naturally, Tableau-Public-specific things account for only a small fraction (20 pages?) of its content, the rest being "generic Tableau". In the broader field of Tableau books, this one is not the top choice. Good book, but moving on.PS. If you see any odd things in "Comments", that's probably the psycho who has spent days posting offensive comments to my reviews - only for them to be deleted by Amazon - after I criticized an iffy Packt book promoted with questionable five-star reviews. ("R Machine Learning By Example" by Bali and Sarkar, if you are wondering). As long as you know that his "Dimitri Shvorob" is fake, there isn't much harm he can do.
