By Viviane Crystal Mary Shelly was the daughter of two renowned parents, William Godwin, political philosopher, and Mary Wollstonecraft, feminist writer. Mary Shelly’s father remarried after her mother’s death, a money-grabbing, bitter stepmother who denigrates Mary’s intelligence and visions of the best in life and learning. Mary’s sister, Fanny, is a timid creature who accommodates their step-mother’s demands but Mary prefers to read and write. The financial condition of the Godwin family is verging on disastrous and it is Mary’s stepmother who comes up with the idea of their opening a bookshop. Both her father and stepmother urge Mary and other writers to create fiction oriented toward children. At first it appears that their income will be moderate but sufficient to support their family. But needs arise and William taps everyone he knows for loans that eventually disappear. It’s at this time that Mary’s life undergoes an intense transformation.Mary falls in love with Bysshe Shelly, a married man whose possessive wife, Hannah, does everything possible to besmirch Mary’s name and family after Bysshe declares his undying love for Mary. Disaster will follow many years later after their rash, dedicated life begins. Another family member, Claire, will latch onto the couple and create many crises.Antoinette May interweaves Mary’s growing interest in the power of electricity to invigorate life with the scenery and castles of Geneva and other places. The weather is frightening frequently and Mary’s interest in Gothic elements grows and grows until she finally creates the famous novel, Frankenstein. Elements of her own and Bysshe’s personal life becomes the conflict elements of the scientist and the frightening creature he creates. While many readers have heard about this background information, this novel vividly and imaginatively recreates the probable scenario that led to this stunning novel still read by students and adult readers today.In one sense, the reader will sympathize with Mary who suffers much in order to remain with her greatest love. Other characters who offer support and friendship during these years are well-known and not so well-known; they enable Mary to endure Bysshe’s changeable and idealistic nature. Their beliefs are counter-culture to British and European ideas about nature and philosophy, earning the couple derision and scorn while hypocritically praising their literary creations. A not-so-praiseworthy depicting of the famed poet, Lord Byron, adds an intriguing, unexpected twist to the plot and its other characters, as well as his influence on both Bysshe and Mary.All in all, The Determined Heart… is a superb, literary novel about creativity, social and political mores, science, Gothic literature, passionate love that scorns mandated behavior and so much more – all with phenomenally disastrous and delightful consequences! So very well-crafted, Antoinette May! A classic work of literature or historical fiction in itself!

Coto Frankenstein would be the result of Mary Shelley’s creativity. But, that would not come until several years later. The focus of this novel is the life of Mary Godwin, daughter of William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft, both authors in their own right. Mary Wollstonecraft was an early feminist, and many hated her outspoken manner. But, Mary Wollstonecraft died shortly after Mary’s birth, leaving William Godwin to raise two young girls, his stepdaughter Frances (Fanny) Imlay, and Mary. When Mary was four, he remarried Jane Clairmont who had two children of her own.Money from the sale of William’s books was rapidly declining and times were financially burdensome for the family. They moved to London where Jane had the idea to open a book store. Mary’s first impression of Skinner Street was “… worse than anything she could have imagined. Offal and blood from the Smithfield Slaughterhouse had been left to putrefy in open gutters, and every kind of trash littered the road.”As Mary matured, she met and fell head over heels in love with Percy Bysshe Shelley. He was already married and could not part from his wife, Harriet, and so they left together to form their own illegitimate union. Her step sister, Claire, went with them. Soon he was intimate with Claire, cheating on Mary as he had cheated on Harriet. Yet her love for him remained unusually strong.This is a very gripping historical fiction novel set in the early 19th century. In the author’s note, Antoinette May explains, “Dates and incidents have sometimes been slightly altered in the interests of presenting Mary’s life in its true, totality.” I loved how the story enveloped ‘shadows’ of things that would stimulate Mary’s later writing of Frankenstein. For instance, as a young girl, she’d sneak behind a sofa and listen to her father and his friends. One evening, scientist Anthony Carlisle told about experiments being conducted on executed prisoners. He said, “…tonight we finally succeeded in passing electricity through the corpse of one of them. Can you believe—the poor creature actually moved!” Rating: 4 out of 5.

I was pleasantly surprised--no, that doesn't cover it. I was supremely shocked that this book was so well thought out and written. I love historical novels based on real people, but many of them tend to lack the crucial research that makes them feel authentic. This author made certain to remain true to the characters, whilst still being imaginative enough to write a book that also keeps the reader's attention.Mary Shelley surely was an interesting person and she is depicted that way here, but it was the descriptions of Lord Byron and Bysshe that really captivated me more than anything else.This book brings to life all of the loss, excitement, many moves and struggles of this infamous historical couple and shows both the beautiful and uglier aspects of their lives together and apart. The author did a wonderful job of describing each setting she used and taking her characters from flat to three-dimensional, emotional beings that you feel sorrow for having to part with when the story is complete.The only thing that annoyed me, and would have annoyed me even if this were non fiction, was Mary's tolerance for Claire. Not the author's fault, as she was remaining as true to life as possible, but still--I wanted to punch Claire.More than just some simple filling in of the gaps in knowledge, I felt Antoinette May really out her heart and soul into the creation of this book and strongly encourage you to give this book a try.
