Mr. Puffball: Stunt Cat to the Stars, by Constance Lombardo

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—Mr. Puffball is a medium-sized feline who knew he was different even when he was a mere kitten. After watching the old movie Cow-Cat & Aliens, which stars the world's greatest movie star, El Gato, he realizes his destiny—to be a Movie Star Actor. Readers follow Mr. Puffball on his cross-country trip to Hollywood where he ends up at Purramount Studios. Here he "catapults" himself into the next best thing to being a famous movie star: stunt cat to his movie star hero, El Gato, who turns out to be different from what Mr. Puffball expected. The text is accompanied by humorous black-and-white line drawings. Though the story line and design hint at a younger audience, the narrative is too long for the chapter book crowd. There are places where the pacing slows and many readers will lose interest. The scenes where El Gato pranks Mr. Puffball or loses his temper drag on a bit too long. Although the book ends with a good message, "it's not the whiskers that make the cat, it's what we do with them," it takes a committed reader to reach the end. VERDICT This title is best suited for middle grade readers who appreciate animal fantasies, stories about Hollywood trials and triumphs, and humorous cat drawings.—Paula Huddy, The Blake School-Highcroft Campus, Wayzata, MN

Review “I couldn’t resist buying this insane book!” (Tom Angleburger, New York Times Bestselling author of the Origami Yoda series and Crankee Doodle)“A gut-busting breakthrough in kitty litter-ature!” (Alan Katz, author of The Day the Mustache Took Over)“Emotions run high and dramatic moments are many, but Mr. Puffball’s positive attitude and growing understanding that good friends are what matter most light up the pages.” (Publishers Weekly)

By Jennifer Bardsley This summer my six-year-old daughter and I got to take a sneak peek at a digital advanced review copy of Mr. Puffball: Stunt Cat to the Stars by Constance Lombardo that I received from Above the Treeline. Reading Mr. Puffball together made for many purrrrrrfect afternoons. Yeah, baby!Mr. Puffball: Stunt Cat to the Stars tells the story of a young feline who dreams of becoming a famous movie star. He travels across the country to Hollywood, takes a side-trip through Hobowood, and finally makes it to Los Angeles. Then ... nothing. Becoming a movie star isn't as easy as Mr. Puffball hoped it would be. Luckily some friendly felines come to his rescue and give Mr. Puffball a total cat makeover. Before he knows it Mr. Puffball is onstage meeting his cinematic hero, El Gato, and that's when things get really hairy.I've seen chapter books and I've seen graphic novels, but I've never seen anything like Mr. Puffball. Word-count wise, it seems a lot longer than Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Picture wise, there are way more illustrations than a standard middle grade novel.I used to teach Kindergarten through fourth grade and to me, Mr. Puffball is at a solid third grade reading level with enough picture clues to make it accessible for younger readers as well as English Language Learners. Older readers will also be engaged, especially by all of the puns. This is one special book!

By Franklin S Bolt Mr. Puffball I wish you were my cat, but then, I would have to give you up to follow your dreams, wait! You're already doing that...in Hollywood! This highly illustrated MG novel is truly uproariously hilarious, and I'm not someone who laughs out loud. I found myself snort-laughing at Mr. Puffball's numerous lists, his whacky but believable encounters with quite a cast of characters and his innocent sense of humor. What I love about this novel is that every one has a dream, even if they don't know it yet, so it's very relatable. Mr. Puffball follows all the right rules and breaks a few on his way to achieving his life-long dream .. even if what he thought he wanted changes! While I was reading this novel, I kept thinking that if there had been more books like this when I was a reluctant reader, I would have had the courage and interest to keep reading and push myself to read "big" (as in pages) books. Instead I read picture books until it was too embarrassing to walk to the "kiddy" section. Enough about me. Even at my age, I'm thrilled to have read Mr.Puffball and thrilled that Constance Lombardo will be writing more in this series.

That was my reaction to author/illustrator Constance Lombardo's Mr Puffball: Stunt Cat to the Stars, the story of a young cat from Jersey who seeks his fortune in Tinseltown. The writing is warm and witty, with just enough cat-themed puns to give the reader a laugh on every page, and a story that turns as much on friendship as on the vicissitudes of stardom. But what makes the book is the illustrations. Lombardo has credited a wide range of artists as inspiration for her black-and white drawings, including the idiosyncratic and heavily-lined style of B.Kliban, Edward Gorey's silver-screen gothics, and Garry Trudeau's satirical realism. But the drawings in Mr. Puffball are their own thing, at once sophisticated (especially where they reference classic cinema images) and humorous (especially with their voice-ballooned dialogue) and touchingly, well, human. Just as sometimes happens with Greg Kinney's Wimpy Kid books, the drawings often offer us an insight not provided by the protagonist's narration. In Mr. Puffball's case, it's often a reminder of how small and vulnerable he really is in what is ostensibly an adult world—and how much heart this young cat has to have in order to pursue his Hollywood dreams.
